Call for Papers Dear colleagues, we would like to invite you to the
26th session of the Study Group Iron Age from 3rd to 6th of October 2013. Invited by the “Keltenwelt am Glauberg” the Study Group Iron Age will hold this meeting in Bad Salzhausen which is about 20 km north of Glauberg. We request for contributions to the following topic:
Arts and Crafts Art is a creative human activity and its product which is significantly influenced by culture. It can be expressed by word and writing, performances, three-dimensional objects, and pictures. For the Iron Age Archaeology especially the two last categories are relevant. However, the artistic element of an object does usually not enhance its functionalities, e.g. a mask fibula without a mask would still be functional in its primary use. Besides the finished work of art we are interested in the process and background of its making. Therefore the following questions are essential: Which technical and artistic possibilities and means of expression were used? Are there any similarities or differences between diverse material classes? Who made these creations and who was the initiator and user? How skilful was the producer? In which contexts were these artistic objects found? Is it possible to reconstruct cultural influences? Who or what do they represent? To which extent are we able to draw conclusions from the objects on their symbolic value, on the concepts behind them, and on their cultural background? How far was the Iron Age art subject to functionality, and what kind of intentions can possibly be deduced from the archaeological features? More comprehensive interpretations and analyses are explicitly welcome in order to give room to an extended discussion. The above mentioned questions are intended to be indicative, but there will be no restrictions on other related questions being included. Furthermore, there is a section planned making it possible to present up to date Iron Age research. Oral contributions should be no more than 20 minutes. If the quantity of contributions exceeds the time available, a selection may be made. The colloquium languages will be German, English, and French. 1
