RECORDING + DANCE STUDIO

Built project : Multi M Studio (Recording studio + multipurpose space)

Software used: AUTOCAD PHOTOSHOP

h The client’s brief was to have three main spaces in the lot, a control room, a live room, and a multipurpose space that could be used for activities such as make-up classes, small event gatherings, photo shoot set, dance practice, and etc. A modern, simple and minimalistic aesthetic was requested. The whole design job included designing a new lighting scheme for all spaces. For the control room + live room, for sound absorbency and diffusion, the walls were made using wooden frame with the panels cavity filled with Rockwool and custom extra external padding were also made and attached on the wall. These two rooms are fitted with wooden floors.

01

The multipurpose space has a full length mirror fitted on one of the wall and a curtain railing was fitted on top of it so it can be covered when not needed. A sink was installed on the corner for purposes such as beauty face classes/ seminars would be held.

Dance centre

The Dance Hive (Dance Centre)

04

h

This dance centre is designed to provide inspiring places that mirrors the fluid movements of dance, characterizing the interplay between the curving walls and to create a sense of flow and kinetic energy. The centre is used during day and night by different target groups and creates job opportunities. A two-way beneficial connection with all the surrounding programs.

The spaces are used throughout the day and night by different aged-user groups. Creates job opportunities for teaching and training, and a location for small dance studios/company to collaborate in and big competitions and dance events. Two-way beneficial connections with all of the surrounding programs, for example, serves as a practice studio for a performance in the bar, the music studio can produce songs for dance performances, or a rehearsal space for a show.

Dance centre

The dance studios are stacked to create acoustic separation, same as the Boston Dance Centre, and creates a visual presence on the street, basically a building separated by a walkway on the ground floor and merges from the mid to the top.

The affinity centre

The Affinity Centre (Research Lab Facility)

Software used: REVIT AUTOCAD PHOTOSHOP SKETCHUP TWINMOTION ILLUSTRATOR

h affinity; biology. the phylogenetic relationship between two organisms or groups of organisms resulting in a resemblance in general plan or structure, or in the essential structural parts. A small research hub that monitors the park, “staging” data in innovative and interactive ways. It provides a lab, seed bank and a information sharing platform to attract not only locals but the whole of Plymouth to come.

05

As part of ‘The Interweave Of Revival’ group strategy, the proposal, Victoria Park‘s Affinity Centre aims to host as a place to collect and share data, to help the community’s relationship with flora and fauna to flourish. Making it as a “central hub” of the park, aims to highlight the “performances” of nature of the existing and future additions of the park. There is a big potential for the park to host a nature reserve. Working with multiple organization, public and private sectors. Implementing technology on aiding the support of data collection and sharing; Tree Plotter software.

Group Masterplan: The brief sets out to make a stronger connection between the disconnected districts of Stoke, Stonehouse and Devonport, whereby Victoria Park itself as a border betweenthe three. The park has a large disconnect from the city centre of Plymouth and other parks.

This research lab provides the facilities to study the biodiversity growth of the park. Researchers will have a direct visual connection with the outside while working, also maximizing the use of natural lighting all throughout the day.

Utilizing the slope roof, this space acts as an open air theatre where the solid wall is used as a screen to show nature shows, movie nights, documentaries, etc. The roof is covered with grass, allowing the users to fee like they are on the park grass. This roof also acts as a viewing platform.

This space is for visitors to access fully immersive interactive information about various aspects of the park and canal. Visitors are able to immerse themselves and interact with the projections and screens. People can walk around or just sit and watch the projected images change in line with the movement presence in the room. This space emphasizes the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

05

This small interpretative centre component promotes public outreach and environmental opportunities, providing visitors the chance to orient themselves to the mission of the research centre, before embarking on a self-guided tour of the park. Every information that is collected through research will be instantly available for view.

Year 3 | Semester 2 : Interchange Gateway

Interchange gateway

(Transportation hub)

Software used: REVIT AUTOCAD PHOTOSHOP SKETCHUP TWINMOTION ILLUSTRATOR

h

06

As part of our masterplan, the Interchange Gateway (mobility hub) aims to be the ‘gateway of invitation‘ of the site towards the city centre, linking more efficiently with the major bus routes and acting as a magnet, drawing people towards the waterfront area, interacting far better with its immediate surroundings, and providing new and far more welcoming links between the community and enhancing the user experience for daily transit passengers, providing accessibility and sustainable transportation such as bikes and electric scooter. Its strategic positioning creates a view to the Land and Coast Centre, acting as the central destination for visitors to the Barbican itself and further facilitating the subject of the National Marine Park into the conversation of the site.

The objectives of the design were to use the topography to frame the view to the waterfront. Also, to fully integrated and accessible mobility hub with better facilities and improved safety and security for passengers. To use form and structure to create a dramatic and impressive gateway for visitors and daily users, and add a bold addition to the site’s streetscape, also utilizing materials found on site to celebrate the heritage identity of the area. Embracing the principles of social, economic and environmental sustainability. The design also aims to be future-proof structure, something that can be expanded, providing the platform to host potential transport methods such as a tram system and underground trains

LIVE PROJECT

Dartington’s ‘Big Tent’

07

h

The Dartington Shelter project with the Big Tent as chosen winners was a competition setup to achieve a space for retreat to the campsite for guests staying on the estate. The competition gave the Dartington Hall Trust committee the choice to pick what would best suit the site from their perspective. One of the requirements was for the structure to be temporary ensuring that it could be deconstructed and built during varying seasons over 10 years. The added benefit to this was getting planning permission much more easily. When we initially visited the site, we found an existing shelter which was previously just used for storing hay / wood. This shelter did not offer any protection to users from the environmental conditions if they took a turn for the worse . The most important ambition for this project was for a new structure that complimented and enhanced the current offering on the estate using natural, sustainable, materials. This was in addition to us manually constructing some of the main structural components out on the estate ourselves.

We learned to use multiple building tools and techniques. During this time, we learn all the problems that could come up during the construction phase and how it could affect the design and structure, and how to handle it.

LIVE PROJECTS

We were all given tasks to complete every single different parts of the project in groups of six people. The aim of us participating in the construction is to make us aware of the relationship between what is on paper (drawings) and actual real life construction phase.

We made sure to follow the safety rules and regulations on site all throughout the project.

Identity & Architecture

h

The saying that a picture holds a thousand words finds a different application in architecture; identifying architecture through a uniform view is difficult. The lack of a singular view, perhaps, leading to a crisis in national identity. The crisis is facilitated at the intersection between managing localization and globalization. Amongst the key aspects here are the bringing together of culture and ecology to generate modern design. This essay examines these aspects; vernacular architecture and modernist architecture are researched side by side to address identity, as well as the importance of people in articulating what that common identity may be.

3rd Year Dissertation Competing Perspectives: Heritage Conservation & Development in Malaysia’s Identity Quest This research paper is about the significance of heritage in development growth affecting the quest of a national identity, as well as confronting the motion of development over conservation in context with The Straits of Malacca, two of UNESCO’s Wold Heritage Site located in Malaysia. In the first chapter, this paper talks about the codification of memory, defining the deeper meaning of tangible and

08

intangible heritage, then discussing the competing perspective in the subject of the significance of heritage. The second chapter talks about interpretation, explaining the importance of recognizing the existence of multiple perspectives. In addition to that, talking about cultural symbolism, where the efforts of the fusion of tangible and intangible heritage are in progress to achieve a successful interpretation for national architectural identity. The last chapter talks about the shift in the conservation paradigm, where the importance and complications that comes with heritage conservation in Malaysia are elaborated. In conclusion, it is said that the relationship of development and heritage conservation will always be contested, however should be working towards a similar goal in the context of architecture, also reminding us that it is everyone responsibility in this subject to keep the relationship of the two harmonized.
