How time flies – it seems like just yesterday that I was sitting down to write a welcome to our last season of work, and now, twelve months later, here we go again! It’s always an exciting time here at the Lyceum between the end of one season and the start of another, as we take stock of what we have achieved in the past year. Moreover it’s a time when the whole company can look forward with real excitement to the new collection of work to be staged here from September onwards. Season 2008/09 holds so much promise and potential, with some genuinely great pieces of theatre from some genuinely great dramatists. Shakespeare, Barrie, Miller, Ludlam, Shepard and Frayn are all master craftsmen with unique and vivid visions of the world of theatre; writers you know you can rely on, regardless of the subject matter, to come up with the goods and entertain and inspire an audience. On top of these shows, of course, we have a wonderful piece of family entertainment for you in the form of our Christmas show, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It’s a classic tale for people of all ages, and along with the six productions in our main Season, is very much a part of the Lyceum’s 2008/09 programme, presented with the same care, attention, skill and love as the rest of our work. I sincerely hope you will be able to join us in Narnia this winter!

You can read more about each of our plays in the pages that follow, but in essence this is a Season about character and identity – people and societies trying to discover what they’re about, where they come from, where they’re going, and whether or not they actually want to reach those destinations.
CURSE OF THE STARVING CLASS
Many of the stories we’ll be telling have elements that are unsettling or strange, sometimes involving the supernatural, sometimes the psychological, and sometimes the downright surreal. I’m very proud of the shows we’re about to present for you, and I hope that you’ll be able to see at least two or three of them – although ideally you’ll take out a Season Ticket and see all six! Even if that’s not for you, I hope you’ll feel inspired to visit and revisit us over the coming Season to enjoy yourself, to be challenged, and to be moved. Because, in the end, that’s what we’re here for.

“Foul whisperings are abroad, unnatural deeds do breed unnatural troubles.” Confronted by three witches as he returns from battle, Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, is given a tantalising vision of the future – he will acquire great power in his homeland, first as Thane of Cawdor and then as King of Scotland. Intrigued by this prophecy, his personal ambitions are aroused – and when word arrives that his valour in the King’s service has been indeed rewarded with the title of Cawdor, his thirst for power begins to control him. Obsessed with the prophecy, he and his scheming wife set their sights on achieving this ultimate honour and authority. And when King Duncan comes to stay at his trusted nobleman’s home, the scene is set for bloody murder, a power grab, and a dark period of tyranny and fear in Scotland. As Macbeth’s powerlust, paranoia and guilt grow stronger by the day, the bodies begin to mount up, and he finds himself haunted by the past and tormented by the fear of losing his new kingdom. Starring Liam Brennan (The Winter’s Tale, The Merchant of Venice, Othello, Anna Karenina) as the title character, Macbeth is a coproduction with Nottingham Playhouse Theatre Company and will transfer to Nottingham (22 October to 15 November) after its run here at the Lyceum. “I dare say, to a timid thing, being a ghost is worse than seeing them.” Barrie’s wonderful Edwardian ghost story, Mary Rose, begins in a dark and mysterious old house. A young man is being shown round by an old caretaker whose evident unease is matched only by her distaste for his jaunty, overconfident air. Though she is unwilling to speak of it, we learn that this house has a dark secret… Suddenly we are taken many decades into the past, where the Morland family are at leisure in their home, and where their eighteen-year-old daughter Mary Rose is about to receive a proposal of marriage. Before assenting though, her parents feel honour-bound to inform her suitor of a curious and unnerving incident from her childhood. All seems well until a few years later when Mary Rose is, unwittingly, brought back by her husband to the scene of that incident, and the mystery begins to take hold once again. Barrie’s play is unsettling and fascinating in equal measure, its tone recalling modern exercises in the supernatural such as Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black.

Yet while there is a dark side to this story, there are also moments of great humour and fun. Barrie’s wit and warmth here both relieve and heighten the haunting tone of the rest of the piece.

“Isn’t it better to feel that what you have came to you because of something special you can do? Something, something… inside you.” The Man Who Had All the Luck, despite encompassing the same great creativity and values identified in his other masterpieces, remained one of Miller’s least known works for more than fifty years until it was revived in 2000 and staged thereafter in several theatre productions. Set during the Depression, this is a moral drama that examines the American Dream and questions how one man can fail while another, though no more capable, can prosper in life. The play centres upon David Beeves, who is seemingly immune to disaster and wonders when his luck will run out. His good fortune seems to highlight the tragedies of those around him as he tries desperately to find justification for his successes. David’s futile quest for a validation of his identity results in a deepening paranoia that questions the existence of God and meaning of life. Directed by John Dove, whose previous acclaimed productions at the Lyceum include Miller’s All My Sons (2007) and Death of a Salesman (2004), The Man Who Had All the Luck is a powerful and tragic drama concerned with human freedom and centred on an American family struggling to find reason in their world.

“It’s a terrible thing to marry an Egyptologist and find he’s hung up on his mummy…” Subtitled ‘A Penny Dreadful’ and taking its lead from tales of gothic romance, The Mystery of Irma Vep is a fast-paced and wickedly funny parody of the genre, mixing in references to a whole host of novels and films, from Rebecca and The Hound of the Baskervilles to The Mummy, Frankenstein and Dracula. If Daphne du Maurier had written a post-modern episode of Midsomer Murders starring the Marx Brothers, this might very well have been the blood-curdling result! Eminent Egyptologist Lord Edgar Hillcrest has happily re-married after the violent death of his first wife, Irma. But her memory still lingers in the house, as does the mystery surrounding the demise of their son Victor at the hands of a suspected werewolf (also named Victor). And what hope does the new Lady Hillcrest have of shaking off the curse of Mandacrest when her husband returns from his latest trip to Cairo with an ancient mummy in tow? This deliciously irreverent romp employs just two actors to play the upstairs and downstairs residents of Mandacrest, as well as a ghoulish supporting cast of vampires, werewolves and Egyptian goddesses. No cliché is left un-mocked, from portraits with moving eyes to secret passages behind the bookcase. Ready yourself for a night of ribald punnery, glorious over-acting and unbridled silliness – the perfect antidote to the midwinter blues! “I’m going into crime. It’s the only thing that pays these days.” Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class comically dissects the corruption of American values. On a run-down Californian farmstead, at the edge of the desert and within migrating distance of the Mexican border, an alcoholic husband and his philandering wife are each scheming to sell off their family home without the other’s knowledge, while their children struggle to come to terms with the harsh reality of the world they’ve been born into. Debt, stolen dreams and a fear of the future fuel the family’s self-destructive behaviours, as they sacrifice their meagre values, and each other, to attain something of the better life they envision for themselves. Behind Shepard’s exploration of the corruption of money and the all-consuming lure of corporation is a painfully funny portrait of a family in decline, unsure whether to reject or embrace the label of America’s ‘starving class’ while teetering on the edge of poverty, sanity and society itself. Shepard’s work explores many similar themes to playwrights such as Arthur Miller and Eugene O’Neill, but through more contemporary eyes, and with a brash, raw energy. The drama is underpinned by a scathing sense of humour, ensuring these characters never become simple archetypes, but are instead living, breathing contradictions of themselves: deranged and uncivilised, hysterical in the face of tragedy and doomed despite their best efforts to survive in the world.

“A chain reaction. You tell one painful truth and it leads to two more.” This intense, absorbing and powerful piece of theatre from Michael Frayn brings our 2008/09 Season to a pulsating end. Copenhagen is a gripping drama in which the mysterious actions of German physicist Werner Heisenberg in 1941 are pored over and intensely questioned. Frayn’s piece is a fictional exploration of Heisenberg’s real-life meeting with his old friend and mentor Nils Bohr, and the huge significance it may have held for the entire world. Years after the event, their ghosts debate the true meaning of the encounter, and try to understand exactly what happened that night. The ill-fated meeting splintered their friendship and provoked decades of speculation and debate. Having laid down the guiding principles of quantum physics in the 1920s, the two then found themselves on opposite sides in the Second World War. Led by Heisenberg, German science rushed to develop a nuclear capability – both to generate power and to create a bomb. But were Heisenberg’s motives so clear cut? Did he really want to put the atom bomb in Hitler’s grasp? And if so, why did he come to Copenhagen and consult so freely with his half-Jewish teacher and colleague? There emerges a fascinating portrait of the lives and work of these two men. Driven to explore the boundaries of science, they were also placed by history in a time when their work could, and would, cause unthinkable suffering and horror. With Bohr’s perceptive wife Margarethe beside them, the two scientists try to decipher what Heisenberg had hoped to achieve, and the implications of their meeting in Copenhagen.

“The wardrobe is magic! There’s a wood inside it, and a lamppost, and a country called Narnia where it’s snowing all the time. And I met a faun called Mr Tumnus and we had tea together!” Last year we took you over the rainbow to the magical land of Oz – this year we’re heading for Narnia! Join Lucy, Edmund, Peter and Susan as they find themselves transported into a world where it’s always winter but never Christmas. Alongside a whole host of forest friends, including Mr Tumnus the faun and Mr and Mrs Beaver, the four siblings must join together with the majestic lion Aslan to defeat the wicked White Witch and restore happiness – and Christmas – to the land of Narnia again. First written in 1950, CS Lewis’s story was recently voted the Best Children’s Book of All Time in a poll by the literary charity Booktrust, and came out on top of a survey by the Lyceum to find the story children in Edinburgh would most like to see on the Lyceum’s stage. SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES 15 – 18 October 2008 WRITTEN AND ADAPTED BY RAY BRADBURY DIRECTED BY GILL ROBERTSON Presented by Catherine Wheels and the National Theatre of Scotland This autumn the Lyceum is delighted to welcome Catherine Wheels Children’s Theatre Company and the National Theatre of Scotland with their production of Something Wicked This Way Comes. One strange and wild autumn, a little while ago, Hallowe’en came early. It came at exactly the same time as Cooger and Dark’s Pandemonium Shadow Show rolled into town. That year, James Nightshade of 97 Oak Street was thirteen years, eleven months and twenty-three days old. Next door, William Halloway was thirteen years, eleven months and twentyfour days old. Both almost fourteen. Almost, but not quite. For Jim and Will, the lure of the funfair is irresistible. But they soon discover that a sinister secret lies behind the smoke and mirrors and the carnival holds a dark desire to destroy the whole town. Only Jim, Will and Will’s mild-mannered dad can save the day.

Adapting his own novel for the stage, the legendary Ray Bradbury has created a spine-tingling battle between good and evil, packed with a terrifying collection of characters including the mysterious flying Dust Witch and the deadly Mr Dark. A fantastic book and now a new show for anyone aged nine or over, Something Wicked This Way Comes is a deliciously scary adventure about friendship and innocence which perfectly captures the wondrous belief we possess when we are nearly fourteen. Cast includes: Andrew Clark, Anthony Eden, Michael Gray, Sean Hay, David Paul Jones, Graham Kent, Veronica Leer, Robin Mason, Patrick Mulvey and Jennifer Paterson.

BEST SEATS With a Season Ticket, you not only get seats for each show, but they will be among the very best in the house – this is because tickets for the individual shows do not go on sale until August, so Season Ticket holders get in first!
BIG SAVINGS Season Tickets are also a great way to make big savings – full details of pricing are in the table below. Depending on what day of the week you decide to attend, you could save up to 26% compared with buying tickets for all six shows individually.

Decide what day of the week you want to come to the show by picking a performance code from the diary at the back of this brochure.
Each of our shows has a run of three weeks (with a couple of them having an extra week at the end). Season Ticket holders book, initially, for the same day for every show and to make it simple each of these has a performance code - so, you might book for the first Tuesday evening (aka Code A), or the second Saturday matinee (Code M), or the third Friday evening (Code U) of each run.

Choose where you want to sit and how many Season Tickets you want to book.
Some people prefer to sit at stage level in the Stalls, others prefer to be a little above that in our Grand Circle – either way, it’s the same price, so let us know which area you’d like, and we’ll get you the best seats we can (and don’t forget that you can always change your seat location if you want to). If you have any special requests (eg an aisle seat, extra leg room, etc) just say so on the form and we’ll do our very best to get what you are after.

FLEXIBILITY Booking a Lyceum Season Ticket is a great way to get your diary organised well in advance – however if you need to make a change it’s simple to alter your Season Ticket dates at no extra charge*. If you move to a more expensive night we’ll ask you to pay the price difference, and if you move to a cheaper night, we’ll give you back the balance.
Complete the application form opposite, and send it back to us with your payment.
We’ll just need your contact details, information on what seats you’d like, how many, and for which days. Then decide how you want to pay – credit card, cheque or three part Direct Debit (see reverse of this page) – and after that you can leave it to us, and we’ll sort all the rest out for you.

LYT LyT is the Youth Theatre of the Royal Lyceum Theatre Company and was formed in 1999. It began with only 60 young people; now over 250 attend every week, coming from throughout central and southern Scotland. Many go on to further study at the UK’s leading drama training institutions including RADA, RSAMD, Central School of Speech and Drama and Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts. LyT works like a professional ensemble theatre company – a highly motivated troupe of young actors with committed leaders taking them through invigorating and challenging training and performance projects. Recent years have seen members of LyT perform at the Traverse Theatre (Edinburgh); The King’s Theatre (Edinburgh); Perth Theatre; Le Grand Bleu, (Lille, France); The National Theatre (London); Det Apne Teatre (Oslo); Fort Worden Theater (Port Townsend, USA); and of course the Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh. We also work in partnership with other organisations including the National Theatre (London) Connections Programme and Promote YT (Scotland). LyT also provides open access holiday programmes that explore a range of theatre skills and in summer produces major main stage performance and technical theatre courses. The three week ‘Summer on Stage’ Programme (11-21 year olds) has in previous years produced adaptations of Shakespeare, Russian political drama, well loved comedies, full scale musicals and much more.

There are events for all ages, interests and levels of experience so there’s something for everyone. It’s your Lyceum – get more out of it! THEATRE CLASS These classes are a popular addition to the events calendar at the Lyceum and provide lively and informative discussion on the plays. After many years at the helm Mike Ridings has retired, but we are delighted to welcome historian Owen Dudley Edwards, another familiar face and supporter of the Lyceum (right), who will engage you with his knowledge of the plays and writers in the comfortable surroundings of our auditorium. The Howard Bar opens at 10am and you can have a complimentary coffee or tea either before or after the class. POST-SHOW DISCUSSIONS A chance for you to see the show and then hear from the people who put it together. Cast members and the show’s director lead a discussion on the production and answer your questions. THEATRE DISCUSSION GROUP – NEW FORMAT FOR 2008 Join fellow audience members for an informal discussion of the play you’ve just seen. The discussion takes place in the Wyndham Bar after selected Wednesday matinees with discussion facilitator, Rod Macara. Feel free to grab a coffee or drink from the Howard Bar and bring it with you. INSIDE THE LYCEUM BARS Why not arrive early and enjoy a relaxing drink in the Howard Bar before the performance? The Howard Bar is accessed through the main foyer and is open from 6.30pm (1.30pm on matinee days) and after the show, when you may even have the opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the cast and company. There are also bars on the two upper levels of the theatre and these are open 30 minutes before the performance and at the interval. Interval drinks can be ordered at any of the bars and we do advise that you take advantage of this service. Drinks can be taken into the auditorium during the performance. Please ask a member of the bar staff for a plastic tumbler. There is an extensive wine list on offer in the Howard Bar, available by the glass and the bottle. Official suppliers of wine to the Lyceum ZUCCA Have you visited Zucca yet? If not then you are missing out on the mouthwatering selection of dishes that head chef Richard Glennie has on offer. RESERVATIONS Unpaid reservations can be held for up to five days or until 30 minutes prior to performance time (whichever is the shorter). Groups reservations can be held without payment until two weeks prior to performance date. LATECOMERS Please ensure you allow sufficent time to arrive at the theatre. Latecomers may not be allowed entrance until a suitable break in the performance, which may be the show interval. This is entirely at the discretion of the Duty Manager and the performing company. Please note that when allowed to enter, latecomers may not be able to reach their allocated seat until the interval. Audio-Described Performances (CODES K + M)

For all the shows in the Lyceum season, we have Audio-Described Performances. If you are visually impaired, simply book one of the two audio-described Season Ticket performances, pick up a headset from the shop on the way in, and our professional team will describe the action to you. These performances are also suitable for the sighted. There are Touch Tours for the visually impaired, CODE M, at 12.30pm.
Pre-Show Talks (CODE A) If you’re coming to see the show on the first Tuesday of each run, why not get here early and come to one of our preshow talks? Directors or members of the creative team are invited to give these talks subject to availability. Tickets: £3/ Under 18s free.
Post-Show Discussions (CODE G) Everyone is welcome on the second Tuesday after the evening performance to meet the cast and director and find out more about the process which takes us from page to stage. This event is free and takes place in the stalls. No ticket required.
Touch Tours (CODE M) There is a Touch Tour for the visually impaired for each production in the season. Starting at 12.30pm in the Howard Bar it then moves onto the stage where one of the audio describers will take you on a tour of the set. Trained Lyceum staff are available to assist.
Signed Performances (CODE R) For those of you with hearing impairment and who can read sign language, we have a BSL sign language performance for every show. Let Box Office know when booking your Season Tickets and we will find the best available seats for you to see the professional signer. The signer appears on stage in the least obtrusive spot and should not distract from the view of the stage.
