I wanted to create something that would encompass the different vibes that flow out from within us all and bring us together. My Spirit, My Flow represents my free spirit, spirits of those before me and the energies they give off into the natural world. This man, like us all, has a past that has made him who he is; each color, wave and line represents those acomplishments, failures, and influences he has experienced that have predetermined how his spirit’s energies interact with others and transcend through life.
Aaron Hoppler My Spirit, My Flow
I first started with an outline of a body that had the appearance of being a window to a galaxy that was supposed to represent Bobby McFerrin. I then put a microphone in the chest. I then drew a stage and some chairs and was going to put some microphones on stands as audience members. Before I started on that, I decided to try making a large and complicated pattern, that can be seen now. After making the pattern, and centering it on the microphone, I decided to see what it would look like on it’s own, and it was way better. Not only did it look better, but more meaning came to the picture. The mic started to look like a keyhole to a whole and beautiful world of the unknown. Close up there are apparent circles, far away there is a cross that becomes visible and mid way are an entirely different set of circles. If you examine you can see the centers of these circles connect with lanes to it’s neighboring circles. This all can mean that we are all connected and the world changes upon perspective and that music a key to these multiple worlds through Bobby’s instrument: his microphone.

The sound of the spirituals spreads across the fields shining a ray of hope among the people. Not just the words, but also the act of singing, bring a sense of peace. With the projection of voices come encouragement and happiness. The colors and the faces in this poster represent the emotions felt when singing spirituals. The songs gave them joy and encouragement, but a bit of sadness was felt as well.

The use of color theory in a way to express spirituality. The lights both represent music and souls, and the blue soul in the center lets out a ribbon of music. In which case, all comes from the soul. The “SiritYouAll” type was hand drawn then scanned and traced. The Smith Center logo was added in the background (made from rectangles).

In this poster I tried to capture the spirit of coming together with the different shades of brown and the color black meeting together at the center, which is the sun, to bring enlightenment to all. At the same time the poster can also represent the memories of someone who has witnessed allot and been through struggles in their life, this comes together in the center to make an eye, as if this person was telling you a story or singing what they have been through. For the background, I was trying to recreate the windows you would see at certain churches and to get a religious feel in them with the different .colors and shapes to form various pictures the viewer can make out
In many cultures, the Dove represents peace and spirituality. A universal symbol of freedom is the bird extending its wings to the sky as looking forward to fly. The illustration perfectly represents what Bobby McFerrin is doing on the stage, joining people together and encourages them to participate.

This one was made to resemble Bobby McFerrin as his instrument: his microphone. The cords coming out are arranged to resemble the artist’s dreadlocks. The cords are then tipped with 3 different connectors: XLR, TRS and 3.5 mini. The connectors were to appeal to music and sound lovers but also represent that Bobby can connect to everyone.

Bobby McFerrin's work is diverse, unconventional, and uniquely his own. He excels at deconstructing our notions of music and crafting an experience that is new yet familiar, collaborative yet personal. In "SpiritYouAll," McFerrin crafts a journey through American Negro Spirituals and presents a reimagining of familiar music that we may experience with fresh eyes and ears. In "Aurora," the aurora borealis is deconstructed and reimagined as a collaborative work in which each shard is an individual contribution toward the whole. In this way, the aurora becomes a unique interpretation of the familiar. It is an experience we can appreciate as both a celestial phenomenon and a personally-crafted presentation.

After listening to a lot of Bobby’s music, I noticed that Bobby likes to skat, so I thought I would take a slew of skat words and arrange them in such a way as to spell McFerrin’s name down the middle ending with “Sing Now,” to emphasize music.

When talking about what spirituals meant to him, singer and member of Friends of Negro Spirituals, Autris Paige said, “You can enslave our bodies, but you can’t enslave our spirit.” He said the spirit comes from here, pointing to his heart. The bird in this poster represents the spirit flying freely even though the cage is closed.

The dominant element of the piece is the red bouquet which holds multiple meanings. It resembles a bouquet of roses that may traditionally be given to the performers of a stage show or as an act of love or affection. Secondly, the more literal representation of helium-filled balloons becomes a symbol of spiritual joy and uplifting and a struggle for liberation—recurring themes of many of the Negro Spirituals. The color scheme draws from the Pan-African flag in which red, black, and green represent the Black African people, their struggle for liberation, and the culture that unifies them under the flag. The balloons now become a metaphor for the African-American slaves, tethered by an external force yet unrelenting in their push for freedom. Through sheer force of will and rich spiritual beliefs, the people and culture find triumph through adversity.

This piece is called Break Free. Sometimes people are enslaved, but not by other people, but themselves. This piece represents breaking free from baggage that some people may be struggling with. The chain fused with the hands represents letting go from what is keeping you down. The color palette shows healing and protection through the process of letting go.
