Doloris Stokely was born to Jess and Verlie Stokely in a cabin beside the river in Del Rio. She was raised there and has never wanted to live anywhere else. Her grandparents were the late Royal and Maggie Stokely, whose lineage can be traced to Jehu Stokely and directly descended from the Queen of England. Her maternal grandmother was Esther Kelly. Doloris became acquainted with the woodworking business when she worked at Bennington Pine. While she was an employee there, she worked in every department and gained a wealth of knowledge and, as she states, “Love of the wood.” Her business started to evolve in 1975 when she built a house. She asked her brother-in-law to build her kitchen cabinets, and his answer to her was that she could build them. Doloris was hesitant at first, but she drew a diagram on her walls as to where she wanted the cabinets placed, and her brother-in-law helped her at that point. Her cabinets were birch and plywood, and she was happy with the finished product. Two years later, the owner of the former Slab Cafe in Del Rio asked her to build cabinets for a rental home. She obliged, and soon the word started spreading about Doloris’ talent.
She quickly developed a customer base as she constructed cabinets and hutches for those who asked. She did not have a building to work in, so her early work was done on her front porch. She quickly realized she was doing something that she loved to do and was making money doing it, so it became her full- time career. In 1982, Doloris built a shop and created Spicewood Cabinets. Later there was enough business to build an addition. Customers started bringing their ideas to her on how they wanted their cabinets, and she was able to fulfill their dreams. All her cabinets are solid wood, and the detail and intricate design demonstrates her dedication to superior quality work She is extremely pleased that she has never had down time, even during this time of financial instability. Her daughter, Marcelle, and nephew, Shannon Stokely are her part-time employees. Doloris has now been a cabinet maker for over 30 years. It is her love, and it has also been an educational experience in that she has become so involved in learning how to meet the demands of her market. The work also keeps her active mentally and physically and has afforded her the way to be independent. Doloris has four chil-
dren, who have been by her side throughout the years. They are Jess B. Parton, Doloris Marcelle Reed, David M. Parton, and Anthony G. Norton. They are also valuable assets when it comes to running her businesses. In 1984, Doloris found herself with extra time on her hands, and she wanted something constructive to help her pass the time. In 1994, she began going to Hillbilly’s, a local music place owned by Paul Stinson, where women could go and feel safe. She loved the music and dancing and went there often. She also plays the upright or dog house bass, and she and several friends formed a group that went together to pick and sing. When Hillbilly’s closed, her son, Jess, found a building in Newport next to Wood Products that he, his siblings, other friends and family renovated and that now is the Tennessee Mountain Music Barn. All her children have contributed to the success of the business located at 870 E. Hwy 25/70. They are open on Saturday night from 7 p.m. until 10 p.m. It is oriented toward families and concessions are available. HomeAdvisor notes that its survey of customers who recently completed home addition projects reported that the average time from start to finish was between three and four months. Certain variables, including the scale of the project and the local permits process, can extend the time it takes to complete a home addition. • Kitchen remodel: Scale is a big factor to consider when estimating the time it takes to complete various home improvement projects, and kitchen remodels are no exception. Some HomeAdvisor users reported projects taking as long as four months, though the average time reported was roughly six weeks. Projects that require major overhauls like rearranging the plumbing and moving
walls will likely take longer than more cosmetic projects that are limited to replacing cabinets and countertops. • Bathroom remodel: More than 1,000 homeowners surveyed by HomeAdvisor reported that bathroom remodels took about 4.5 weeks from start to finish. Small-scale remodels that focus on painting the walls a fresh color and replacing existing tiles can be completed in less than two weeks. But like with kitchen remodels, bathroom remodels that involve replacing plumbing fixtures and removing walls figure to take much longer than that. • Siding installation: HomeAdvisor users report that new siding projects take roughly two weeks from start to finish. That estimate is the same regardless of which materials homeowners are replacing and installing. • Replacement windows: Homeowners who want to replace all the windows in their home can expect such a project to take roughly three weeks. HomeAdvisor notes that such a timeline need not concern homeowners worried that they will be forced to brave the elements during the length of the project. Much of a contractors’ time during a window replacement project will be spent on upfront measuring and then ensuring a tight fit once the windows have been installed.

Building code revisions worldwide are ushering a whole new generation of structures that are between 35 and 40 percent more environmentally responsible. your home would create far lower demand on natural resources.” Designed like Lego, the interlocking Nudura forms are designed with monolithic concrete sandwiched between two continuous layers of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam. “The foam material isolates the concrete and significantly reduces the flow of heat through the wall,” says Rodgers. “It stabilizes the internal temperature from day to night fluctuations and provides a largely self-regulating environment. This faster method of construction creates one solid concrete wall.” As a result, you will need less energy for mechanical heating and cooling, delivering cost savings throughout the year. A home built with this concrete system is stronger, provides greater safety, offers greater sound and fire resistance, and would be far less prone to mold, cold spots and drafts. “Benefits are plentiful to builders, too,” says Rodgers. “The patented hinged web allows the forms to fold flat, requiring smaller shipping space and less manpower than other methods.” If you want your builder to use insulated concrete forms, be sure to make the request well before construction gets underway.

Housing starts, which refers to the number of new residential construction sites, reflect buyers’ demand for newly built homes. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there

Though prospective buyers want a host of modern amenities, they also want something valued by homeowners since the dawn of time: safety. Each county has been assigned a zone depending on its potential radon threat, and those that pose the biggest
threat are designated as Zone 1, while those with the lowest threat are Zone 3. Homeowners building their homes can contact their state’s radon office via www.epa.gov to determine which zone their property is in. In addition to learning which radon zone they’re in, homeowners building new homes can ask their builders to take the following measures so their homes’ interiors are as resistant to radon as possible.
• Install a layer of clean gravel or aggregate beneath the slab or flooring system. • Lay polyethylene sheeting on top of the gravel layer. • Include a gas-tight venting pipe from the gravel level through the building to the roof. • Seal and caulk the foundation thoroughly.
