donna horbury is minding her own business Donna Horbury
developed a love for the High Country long before her permanent move to Boone from Greensboro with husband, Nigel, in 1995. The couple had earlier purchased their first vacation home in the far-reaching corner of the area, eight miles south of the Blue Ridge Parkway, off Sampson Road. Donna accepted a teaching position at Appalachian State University, requiring her to make the trip into town and
crossing a creek 10 times each day, coming and going. Within two years, the couple bought a home in Valle Crucis and decided to rent their vacation home in the woods. Debbie Gragg
of Linville is a multitalented woman with a love for life and a passion for sharing her gifts with others. As a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, certified radiology technician, bread maker and gardener extraordinaire, Debbie carries on a long-held family tradition of making the most of every day. Often inspired by the adventurous spirit of her grandmother — who had her ears pierced for the first time at age 75 — Debbie isn’t content to sit around and watch for things to happen; she’s out there making sure they do happen. A native of Hampton, Tenn., Debbie received her degree in radiology at East Tennessee State University and has been employed at Appalachian State University for 17 years in Student Health Services, currently as radiology manager. She was employed in the radiology department at Cannon Memorial Hospital in 1988 when she met her husband, Sid Gragg; afterward, she worked at Boone Orthopedics. She is a sideline favorite on home game days during Mountaineer football season and has a close rapport with her “boys,” who respect her not only as a medical professional but also consider her a “big sister” who keeps them well-stocked with homemade cookies throughout the season. Away from campus, Debbie enjoys life with Sid at their home in Linville, surrounded by the beauty of nature in all its glory — especially in the summer when their grounds are covered in “bloomers.”
