From Ball Gowns to Pantsuits Bridal Dress Trends By Jenna Lackey
Natural Craft Photography
While some couples have elaborate weddings and others have simple ceremonies, the wedding gown is always something that is remembered. Some wedding gowns are passed down from generation to generation and some are new from the runway. In 2019, wedding dress trends were strongly influenced by the royal wedding of Meghan Markle. According to Brides Magazine, tiaras and capes were a big trend in 2019. Another trend that has been popular among younger people is metropolitan minimalism. According to Bazaar Bride, “Princess Eugenie and the Duchess of Sussex both opted for gowns that were void of lace and embellishment — and a rise in bridal minimalism soon followed, with designers showcasing simplicity and all things unembellished.” With or without lace and embellishment, the trends still lean towards royalty. Plunging necklines were also popular trends, but so were dresses with a modest high neck and long sleeves. Bazaar Bride indicates that 2019 was a big year for feathers and other fringe styles on wed8 | All About Weddings 2020
ding dresses by saying, “2019 is all about flairs for the dramatic, the grand and the over-the-top that make fully feathered looks feel au courant; keep the hair and makeup ethereal, edgy or minimal to avoid this look going costume.” In 2020, bridal dress trends are expected to follow a lot of what 2019 saw. Whether the dress is minimal and simple, or extravagant with a long veil or cape, the elegance of the dress will be the main component. More women are steering away from the traditional white dress. According to Brides Magazine, a light shade of lavender and other pastels have become a popular trend. Brides Magazine also suggested that metallic dresses are an “in” statement for those that are “all about glitz and glamour.” According to The Knot, short dresses are also becoming a more popular trend, perhaps because some women want to show off their legs, while others want to show off their shoes. Short dresses are also more casual, which is great for smaller weddings and eloping. Aside from
dresses, jumpsuits and pantsuits have become a new favorite. Some women prefer to change into pants after the wedding ceremony, and wear something less constrictive for the reception afterwards. According to The Knot, these alternatives are “comfortable, figure flattering and totally of the moment.” Bridal trends for 2020 will see a lot more pantsuits with lace details, floral embellishments and metallic features to ensure a modern look. Louella South, owner and manager of South’s Speciality Clothiers at the Boone Mall, has been working in the wedding gown business for 30 years now. When asked if there were any tips for looking for the right dress, Louella suggested, “If you want to minimize your bust, try a full skirt.’’ South also recommended that ball gowns are a very flattering option for full-figured women, and a sheath dress is flattering for petite women. “All women should feel comfortable in their wedding gown,” Louella says. When asked what advice she would give new brides, she said to take into consideration the time and the place of the wedding. aawmag.com

LIVING WELL
Gown-Ready Health Tips There is no way around it. Eating on the run, happy hour with the bridesmaids and sitting on the couch thumbing through wedding magazines can take its toll. The pounds can creep up on you. That gown that fit so perfectly at the fitting can be busting buttons by the big day if you are not careful. There is no magic pill. You do need to watch the desserts, limit the alcohol and exercise regularly to manage your weight. But instead of focusing on what you can’t do, let’s talk about some tasty things you can do to whittle the waist, burn the belly fat and rock that wedding gown. 1. Protein and fiber with each meal managing weight no big deal. It’s not about deprivation. It’s about balance. This is what a healthy balance looks like. On a 10-inch plate: - one-fourth of that plate is clean lean protein - one-fourth whole grains or starch - half veggies - A spritz or dollop of good fat (e.g. olive oil, nut, seed, avocado.) This combination has been shown to support the following: - It slows digestion, making you feel more satisfied and less likely to go back for seconds. - It controls the absorption of sugar. This helps ward off future cravings. - It stokes the fat-burning fires. - It provides the key nutrients. Rich in vitamins and minerals, this plate supports a healthy immune system, glowing skin and mood stability. 2. Spice it up to keep it off. Who said eating healthy was dull? 10 | All About Weddings 2020
Here are some tasty spices that can help burn belly fat: Black Pepper (piperine): Studies have found that piperine interferes with the formation of new fat cells. Cinnamon: A series of studies printed in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that adding a heaping teaspoon cinnamon to a starchy meal stabilizes blood sugar. Cayenne (capsaicin): A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that daily consumption of capsaicin improved abdominal fat loss. Mustard Seed: Scientists at England’s Oxford Polytechnic Institute found that by eating 1 teaspoon of mustard (no sugar added) can boost the metabolism by up to 25 percent for several hours after eating. 3. Daily caffeine can help make you lean. A couple cups of coffee a day has been shown to stoke fat burning fires by an impressive 3-13 percent. Coffee stimulates “brown fat.” Brown fat is different from the fat we find in the gut and butt. Brown fat helps your body burn sugar and fat for energy. (Of course, avoid caffeine if you are sensitive to it. You need your sleep too!) Final tip: On that wedding day, there are no rules but one. Have a blast! Don’t forget to check with your supervising health professional before making diet and lifestyle changes.

Your Wedding
Beauty Plan Your wedding day is so very special and exciting! It is truly a day that is just about you and the beginning of the rest of your life. The journey may be short or long, but nonetheless, you must consider what the journey entails and what your needs will be. Whether you are planning a large event or a small intimate affair, good planning is an essential part of the equation. From venue to menu to saying “yes” to the dress, all details must be attended to. I always suggest hiring a professional wedding planner, or if that is not within your budget, at least hire a day-of planner. Believe me, that one thing will alleviate a lot of pressure and stress on you. If you are going solo, I highly suggest you research wedding magazines, websites, etc. to get a good idea of all the components of a wedding journey. Find a wedding planning chart that lists out the myriad of tasks to accomplish, deadlines, target dates etc. I also suggest you recruit someone you trust to bounce things off of and lend another set of eyes; you definitely will need objectivity in the process. There is so much more to say around planning, but I will stay in the beauty lane today. I am all about you being the vision of loveliness you’ve always dreamed of on your wedding day. Now, I must say that true beauty is not being the made-up ideal of perfect beauty. No, it is about having self-confidence and loving who you are! True beauty comes from the expression in your eyes and the character
in your face. It is a known fact that if a woman looks her most beautiful, she will feel her most beautiful. Hours, days and months are spent selecting the gown, shoes, colors, bridal party attire, etc. and not much time planning for personal wedding day beauty. I will not detail how you should accomplish your goals as you can customize your regimen based on your specific needs. There is a wealth of good information available out there to help you get there. Head to toe, here is a personal beauty “to do” list to conquer: DIET EXERCISE HAIR SKIN (FACE AND BODY) NAILS TEETH Now take a beauty/wellness assessment of yourself to create your personal beauty strategy (it might be fun to create an avatar). Hair, skin, nails, exercise, diet, etc. Start your prep as soon as possible. The areas I deem absolutely necessary are exercise and diet. I promise if you are attentive to these areas, the radiant, glowy skin, hair, nails, etc will take care of itself as these things are natural byproducts of good health habits. Stress is likely on the horizon so a deliberate and focused regimen of exercise and diet will prove to be of great benefit to you. A few pointers: Your eyes always express your joy and
happiness, especially on your wedding day. Because photography is an integral part of the day, its important that your eye makeup accentuates rather than dominates your eyes. Don’t forget your other skin. A flawless face is great but a soft, smooth all over body speaks for itself. Who wants dry, bumpy, rough, hairy body skin — not you or your partner. Pictures should transcend time; no dated fad looks. Go for a timeless look, a look that most accentuates your natural beauty. This will ensure that you will look like your most beautiful you. Stay away from extremes of any kind. Balance and softness is key. If you are DIY, practice and take photos of the finished look. If hiring a professional, a consultation/trial run should be done for makeup and hair. No surprises on the wedding day, and who needs the stress of not knowing their final look? Please, please do not forget your teeth! Yellowed stained teeth totally detract from any beauty you create. There is nothing like a beautiful smile that flashes beautiful pearly whites. Your wedding date has given you a deadline and forces you into action — tick tock, tick tock—let’s get planning. What a beautiful bride!

Rain, Rain, Go Away Planning for the Worst-Case Scenario and Everything in Between For many brides, a dream wedding doesn’t include rain. But showers don’t mean everything is ruined, thanks to a little pre-wedding planning and flexibility. The first tip from many planners: understand weather is ultimately out of your control. “You can’t not be realistic with what could happen,” says Meris Gantt, owner/ planner at The Whole Shebang. “Understand weather is just out of your control. If it’s not raining, it could be too hot or too cold. But your day can still be beautiful,” says Kelli Rodriguez, owner/planner with Embellished Events for You. 12 | All About Weddings 2020
“Let’s shoot for the stars, as we do with everything in the planning process. Try and execute everything that you envision and want, but at the same time, be realistic about the situation,” says Elizabeth Hempfling, owner/planner with Events by Elizabeth Ashley, LLC. As Gantt says, plan for it — and love it. “You need to love your Plan B. You don’t want to get to your wedding day, and you’re crying because you don’t love it,” she says. “Don’t just put together a crappy rain plan.” In the planning stages, consider all of the options. Gantt recommends not maxing out the venue, especially in late October, November or April when rain is
most likely. Consider how many guests can comfortably fit into a backup location, she says. If a tent wedding is in the works, Hempfling recommends finding a building as backup. Her business has reserved church locations, and if the space goes unused, it’s a donation that can go back to the church, she says. When budgeting, consider weatherproof additions and any additional costs associated with a last-minute change, the planners say. “You’ll look at the tent prices and be like, ‘Oh, $500,’ but you’re not thinking about lights, poles and drapes, lights, heating if you need it — and that’s not aawmag.com
even decorating,” Gantt says. “Hire a professional team that will jump in and do everything they can for you, no matter what,” Hempfling says. “Never put too much on a family member, or someone who’s too close to you, because that can become a pitfall, unintentionally.” All the planners also recommend buying umbrellas, just in case. “Even if it’s just a light trickle and you’re having to cover people from A to B, that’s another thing we carry in our emergency wedding case,” Hempfling says. Communicate expectations to guests, both before and during festivities. “I’m from Michigan, so I don’t have a problem articulating expectations to them. I’m used to the weather changing a lot,” Rodriguez says. “Be mindful of people with limited mobility. Make sure there are options for them.” Gantt recommends considering shoe choice and dressing in layers. “Have it communicated to your people beforehand, if needed, that you’ll be walking outside before,” she says. “Being upfront with your guests before it starts.” If things don’t go as planned, embrace it instead of fighting with it. Gantt remembers one fall wedding where temperatures plunged. Her team bought fuzzy blankets and Hot Hands; the venue set out spiced cider last minute. “We tried to make it festively cold. The team encouraged people to embrace the mountain weather. Not like ‘this is a problem.’ This is an experience,” she says. One tent wedding Hempfling planned was flooded by rain. Her team sprang into action and used the barn on the property, opening up stalls, putting tables inside and making the barn beautiful, she says. Finally, keep the big picture in mind. “Realize it’s one of the biggest days of your life, but it doesn’t have to be perfect or just like you imagined it,” Gantt says.

Local Flowers
Tell a High County Tale Susan Wright shows off a bridal bouquet she created. Photo by Lise Jenkins
Wedding plans are more than endless chores and to-do lists — the choices you make reveal who you are. The flowers you select help tell your story and wrap you, the person you’re marrying, your family and friends in love. When your grandmother got married, she likely went to her local florist who either sold their own flowers or sourced them from a nearby farmer. You could tell what part of the country and time of the year people got married just by looking at the flowers they carried. Today, most of the wedding flowers pictured on social media tell a story that started with technical innovation, economics, the Nixon administration and endless summer. Confused? It’s complicated. Through the 1960s, innovations in refrigerated transportation had made it cheap and easy to move goods around 14 | All About Weddings 2020
the world. By 1969, a group of American growers, taking advantage of year-round growing conditions, created Floramerica, a flower farm outside of Bogota, Columbia. Meanwhile back home, President Nixon’s administration had passed the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, imposing environmental regulations that banned the use of many common agricultural chemicals. Facing a new regulatory climate and higher labor costs, American growers found it was cheaper to grow flowers outside the U.S. and ship them back into the country. Today, Columbia remains the world’s largest producer of cut flowers, shipping to markets that supply most U.S. retailers and florists. This is big business, with over $2 billion worth of flowers moving around the globe for Mother’s Day alone.
In order to survive the journey, flowers first have to be treated with preservatives, then doused with pesticides to reduce the possibility of agricultural pests hitching a ride into the U.S. Look closely at the wedding flowers featured on social media — it’s often the same handful of species being used creatively. That’s because a limited number of flowers are sturdy enough to endure chemical treatment, international shipping and arrive still looking good. In North Carolina, farmers are working hard to bring flower growing back home and consumers are responding — last year we bought over $5 million worth of cut flowers from North Carolina farmers. Like the flavorful food found at the farmers’ markets, locally produced flowers offer the unique flavor of their region. aawmag.com
Susan Wright and her husband Brent have been farming in Ashe County for decades; they’ve watched as interest in local flowers increases. Growing over 250 varieties of flowers at Shady Grove Gardens, they are able to offer brides choices not found in the cargo containers entering the country from Columbia. The High Country is a popular destination for weddings; couples come from off-mountain and out of state to begin the story of their life together. These brides incorporate High Country music, food and flowers in their events. Susan Wright estimates over 80 percent of the brides she helps come from outside our region. These brides appreciate that local flowers are connected to this land and help reveal the time and place of their special story. Susan’s husband gathers flowers from their organic fields, and she then spins them into dreamy bouquets and decorations. Stepping into the converted milk truck they use as a cooler, Susan
shows me buckets of blooms that will be picked up tomorrow by brides who want to create their own magic. In the darkness of their converted cooler Mason jars filled with water are labeled with tiny tags; “bride,” maid of honor” or “bridesmaid” hold bouquets waiting to take their place on stage. These delicate blooms will never know preservatives, pesticides and transoceanic voyages; instead they sing mountain sunshine, cool nights and gentle breezes. Theirs is a High Country story.

Why Bouquets? Have you ever wondered why brides carry bridal bouquets? Marriages were part of a joining of dynas es to assure the lines con nued. Originally brides carried sheaths of wheat, a symbol of fer lity. From pictures depic ng weddings, we know that the ancient Egyp an brides carried lotus leaves and various herbs, believed to ward off evil spirits. The Greeks wore garlands and crowns woven from olive branches and orange blossoms. Herbs, an homage to Hera, made their appearance around this me. The Romans con nued the Greek prac ce, adding roses to the garlands and crowns. The medieval bride and groom wore flower garlands and carried wheat sheaths. During the Elizabethan era, more flowers were added as a playful touch. By the me Queen Victoria married Albert, flowers were very much in vogue. Victoria wore a crown of orange blossoms, symbolizing chas ty. She also was fond of a floral bouquet, in this case one arranged as a “tussie mussie” — a small arrangement bound together by a doily. This is also known as the “posy
New L o ok
style.” In her bouquet of Galanthus snowdrops, she incorporated myrtle. This began the tradi on of English royal brides including a sprig of myrtle in their all-white wedding bouquets. During the 20th century, flowers became a necessary part of the wedding. Flowers now adorned the church aisle, grooms wore boutonnieres and the bridal party all sported bouquets. Some of these bouquets cascaded, some were held together to form a sheath of flowers. Today’s brides now are free to choose the flowers they love rather than dwell on what individual flowers symbolize. Legend has it that the bridal tradi on of throwing the bouquet began because the bride was considered lucky, so anything belonging to her was relished by the guests. In order to escape probing hands, the bride threw her bouquet. Regardless of whether this is true or not, we do know the tradi on of tossing the bouquet began in England. Just know that when you are walking down the aisle, carrying a bouquet of flowers in your hand, you are con nuing a tradi on over 2,000 years old.

Ring From Ready to Wear to Custom, High Country Jewelers Have Options
Village Jewelers
Choosing a forever ring can be an intimidating task. These pieces of jewelry that will be worn for decades to come are available in innumerable styles and designs, but thankfully, the High Country has several jewelers there to make the task both fun and stress-free. Charles Travis, owner of Village Jewelers on King Street, had a simple recommendation to couples to help focus the shopping. “Good, quality stones that are meaningful. The key is good components that are timeless,” Travis says. “It doesn’t matter what kind of gemstone you choose — if it is good quality, you’ll always have it.” “This also means a platform to redesign as your life changes and grows,” he added. Village Jewelers offers brides and grooms a selection of styles to mix and match precious metals, gemstones and settings to build unique pieces for both the bride and groom. While there are beautiful pieces ready to be worn immediately, Travis has seen his business trend to custom work reflecting the individuals and the couple’s lifestyle. “The fun part of this job is to be open to what the clients want, and sometimes they don’t even know what they want, but we interact and they participate in the design process, learning more about this art form. They get to express their artistic ability,” Travis said. The process of designing custom pieces has changed dramatically over the last five to 10 years. Gone are the days of difficult-to-alter wax carvings as a basis for design. With computer-assisted drawing software, changes can be made easily to design as feedback is received. “Today, with CAD programs we can take ideas and transfer them into fine jewelry in a matter of days,” Travis said. This process also applies to a redesign or enhancement of an heirloom family piece. Travis said the addition of a laser welder to his shop 16 | All About Weddings 2020

has enabled he and his design team to fix any precious metal piece, almost without reservation, allowing brides and grooms alike to build on an existing fine jewelry piece with sentimental value. As for the gemstone, diamonds remain at the top, although there is some movement in opal, sapphire, ruby and emerald engagement rings. Travis has worked with clients on sourcing stones from specific areas of the world to enhance the personalized meaning of the bridal set. “People should shop in a brick and mortar store and do some comparisons,” says Paul Yale, owner of Brand Jewelry in North Wilkesboro. Yale also recommends quality as the first and most important factor in choosing your gemstone. “Be wary of diamond certifications and always research the company,” he says. Diamond certifications are documents provided by independent third party labs evaluating a diamond’s characteristics. Known as the 4 C’s of a diamond, stones are rated in cut, clarity, color and carat. Yale said there are a couple trusted labs with consistent and reliable grading, but warns couples against online shopping for this important purchase. He recommends speaking to a knowledgeable jeweler to ensure this investment is well made. For those couples looking for a traditional solitaire ring, Brand Jewelry offers the largest onsite inventory of bridal solitaires in northwest North Carolina and carries only earthmined diamonds. Lab-grown options have grown in recent years; however, Yale has opted not to offer any lab-grown options in his inventory. Yale noted the trend in early 2019 was a halo style, but in the last six months, a round cut has taken the lead as number one seller in engagement designs in solitaires. “Band options have really expanded,” Yale said. “Silicone bands are growing in popularity as a second band; inexpensive, lightweight and flexible, they are perfect for an active lifestyle.”
The options available for wedding bands are expansive at Brand Jewelry. “We have whiskey barrel inlaid, antler inlaid and more. Too many to name,” Yale said. Both Travis and Yale indicated the trend for custom or personalized rings extends beyond the bride. The groom’s choices have grown extensively over the years allowing for the individual’s style to shine through. Regardless of the decision to go custom build or single solitaire traditional, your fine jewelry pieces should be cleaned every six months at a minimum and regularly inspected by a jeweler to ensure lasting wear and beauty.

June 29, 2019 Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church & Blowing Rock Country Club | Blowing Rock, NC From colors to match the church sanctuary, to the reception menu, to the wording of the vows, every detail of Haley Banks’ and David Ray’s Blowing Rock wedding was planned with careful thought and consideration for a custom-made, memorable day. Vows & Values by H o l l i e E u dy
On the morning of June 29, 2019, Haley Banks walked with her sister from their childhood home to their family’s church. Together they carried the memories of childhood and hopes for their futures as they made their way to the place in which Haley would marry her fiancee, David Ray Allen. “All that really mattered to David Ray and me was that we got married and had all of the people we love and cherish there with us to celebrate.” And, so it was, from the very start that Haley Banks and David Ray Allen simply matched. Both raised in small towns, Haley in Blowing Rock and David Ray in Shelby, each made their way to UNC-Chapel Hill where they began their undergraduate journeys. The daughter of an architect and a development planner at Appalachian, Haley majored in communications and minored in recreation administration and Spanish. The son of elementary and high school principals, David Ray majored in religious studies and minored in journalism. Attending a college retreat with their churches, Haley Banks and David Ray were randomly assigned cars to carpool to the retreat. It turns out, they were in the same car. They became fast friends and began a correspondence of letters during the following summer. After the church’s fall retreat of that same year, David Ray asked Haley out on their first date. Haley shares, “It was the best date I’d ever been on. He took me to a trampoline park, then to get dinner at a local BBQ restaurant, and we ended the night looking at the stars and drinking hot chocolate in his backyard. We knew almost instantly that we wanted to be together forever.” Their two-year courtship turned into an engagement when David Ray proposed by Price Lake in Blowing Rock. As wedding plans were underway, Haley and David Ray spent a great deal of time discussing the songs, scripture and quotes that were most meaningful to them. “We wanted our ceremony to reflect our values and commitment to each other.” After a deliberate reading of various marital vows, Haley and David Ray customized their vows Continued on next page All About Weddings 2020 | 23
We knew almost instantly that we wanted to be together forever. - Haley Banks and made them fit precisely the promises they would make to one another on their wedding day. Other aesthetic considerations were finalized once they decided with certainty they would marry in Haley’s family’s church. “Because the carpet in the church is bright red, we wanted to have colors that worked well with the red. My bridesmaids wore a mauve and David Ray’s groomsmen wore black tuxes.” The bouquets and boutonnieres also complemented these color choices. Haley’s mother “had the amazing idea to have trees placed at the front with white flowers and ivy overflowing their planters. They made the space feel more natural and rustic, which we loved,” Haley explains. Searching online and visiting several dress stores, Haley knew she wanted her dress to incorporate lace. “When I found this dress, I was so excited. I just fell in love and didn’t want to take it off! To complement my dress, I wore a pair of lace heels,” Haley describes. The couple chose Meadowbrook Inn for their rehearsal dinner, and their reception was held at the Blowing Rock Country Club. “We really wanted the guests to be able to enjoy nature and the beauty of the mountains. The Country Club offers gorgeous mountain views, a wonderful porch, and wide, floorto-ceiling windows, allowing guests to feel as though they are outside, while staying indoors in case of inclement weather.” The food at the reception was also custom to Haley and David Ray’s tastes. “We served a number of dishes station-style. Our favorite, and David Ray’s most proud contribution, was a mashed potato bar. Guests were able to 24 | All About Weddings 2020

choose between mashed or sweet potatoes and a plethora of toppings.” Turkey, Caesar salad, and a fruit and cheese display were also part of the celebration. “Our cake was chocolate (our favorite) with cream cheese icing. It was more on the rustic side, with blush icing flowers circling down the side of the white frosting,” Haley says. Music at the reception was also carefully selected with the couple dancing to the Avett Brothers’ “Offering” for their first dance. Music during the ceremony included instrumental versions of the couple’s favorite songs and hymns played on the piano. “However, the reception’s music took on a very different vibe as we wanted people to really have fun and enjoy themselves! Our DJ was amazing and kept the hits rolling!” Looking back on their special day, Haley explains, “Our wedding day was better than I ever dreamed it would be (and I had very high expectations!).” Of all the moments the couple shared, Haley is definite about her favorites: “Our vows, to be in that moment making the promises we will keep for the rest of our lives, the way it felt to be next to David Ray, to be able to call him my husband, dancing at the reception, and the way my dad hugged me before we walked down the aisle.” The couple honeymooned in Charleston before returning to Durham, where they currently reside and work: Haley as an events support specialist with the Office of University Events at UNC-Chapel Hill and David Ray in pursuit of a master’s in divinity at Duke Divinity School. a day for Love & Family by J es s i c a I s a ac s
Like many couples who tie the knot in the High Country, Jacob Harbour and Caroline Yates first crossed paths as students at Appalachian State University. They met in the fall of 2011 and went on their first date the following summer. “I knew he was the one the moment we went on our first date,” says Caroline. “He was so kind, considerate, funny. He treated me with respect and chivalry. The deal-setter, however, was when I heard him play the banjo! Jake is so talented and I love to see the joy on his face when he plays music.” A local girl with deep roots in the Boone community, Caroline’s family values played a huge role in her wedding day. “My family culture is a little different than most. My family is very close and we have a strong bond. I am so fortunate to be 26 years old and have both sets of my grandparents,” she says. “Growing up, we spent a lot of time with my family. My favorite memories are of our Sunday afternoon lunches after church. We would all gather at my grandparents’ house and spend the afternoon as a family.” When it came time to plan her big day, she knew that same special closeness would be an important part of the experience. In fact, they were married in her family church and enjoyed a reception at her grandparent’s home in Boone. “I am so thankful for the role my family played in our big day. The majority of planning and decorations were completed by my family. Jake’s family and mine spent countless hours decorating, baking, setting up and cleaning up our reception and ceremony. I am so blessed to have my family and their willingness to dedicate time — it made our day that much more special.” Continued on next page

Road tripping to Winston-Salem with her sisters made shopping for her dream dress one of her favorite pre-wedding memories. “When I stepped out of the dressing room, we all began to cry. It was such a special time and I will treasure it forever. I loved the dress because it was so me. I always envisioned myself in a dress with sleeves and a flowing chiffon bottom. I was so fortunate to find these qualities in a dress; and the best part — it was so comfortable.” In coordinating all of the other moving parts that make a wedding day possible, Caroline had a specific vision in mind: elegant, classic, sophisticated energy. “I was so pleased with the venues and decorations that came together to give us this dream. Most people say, ‘If I could do it over again I would change…’ But for me, my wedding had every feature that I imagined.” She says their best investment, hands down, was hiring a quality photographer. “From day one, I told my mother that all I really cared about was the photographer, and I cannot brag on Megan Sheppard enough,” said Caroline. “I believe it is so important to have a photographer that is personable and understands your vision, because the memories from the best day come to life through pictures. “Megan was so personable and was very interactive with me throughout the process. She made it so fun and stress free — which, let’s be honest, it’s always a plus to have some stress relief during wedding season! We were so pleased with her work and presentation. Our photos were unbelievable and breathtaking.” Meaningful, handmade elements created by loved ones topped this bride’s list of favorite wedding day details. “My grandmother hand-painted our wedding programs. It was such a personal and special touch to our day. Secondly, our chalkboard background was very special to me,” Caroline said. “My father, mother and I spent a lot of time making it, and it was so fun to spend time making those memories. It was such a treat to see our guests taking pictures with the backdrop at the reception! “My favorite touch would be the wedding cake made by my sister Hannah, who is such a talented chef. I was blown 54 | All About Weddings 2020

I am so blessed to have my family and their willingness to dedicate time — it made our day that much more special. - Caroline away by her cake decorating abilities. It was special to have her make our cake and showcase her ability. It was also an added bonus that it tasted amazing!” The loving kindness of their families helped make their big day happen, but the bond between bride and groom is what really made it magical. “My favorite moment of the day was watching Jacob’s reaction as I walked down the aisle,” she said. “You could feel the love, support, and mostly the spirit of God during this time. Megan was able to capture his reaction in a photograph and it is easily one of my top five favorites from our day.” After the ceremony, the newlyweds were able to steal away for a little road trip of their own — driving to the reception site in a rented Ford Model T convertible. “It was so much fun to take pictures with the car, and my favorite was driving on 321 with the top down,” said Caroline. “We had such a good time watching the reaction of other people who were honking for congratulations. It was one of our first moments as husband and wife, and it was so fun and special.” Now, with a loving family behind them and the whole world in front of them, Mr. and Mrs. Harbour are ready to see what the future holds. “Jacob has always been my best friend. We have such an incredible and strong bond. It makes our relationship so special because we are able to discuss openly and honestly,” Caroline said. “We spend most of our time laughing, honestly. He is always keeping me on my toes with his jokes! In the future, we hope to strive to complete our own dreams and travel while we are newlyweds. Eventually, we hope to begin a family of our own.” Continued on next page All About Weddings 2020 | 55

Wedding Bells in
Burundi
With wedding bells about to ring, can you imagine a would-be groom hustling to get together a bunch of cows to present to his prospective inlaws as a dowry for his bride-to-be? That’s the way it used to be in Burundi, and still is in some other African countries. “In past decades,” Janvier Manirakiza explains, the dowry was always a certain number of cattle, accompanied by beer and other gifts. Nowadays it is not about cows any more; it’s cash.” “In 2018 I married the woman of my dreams, Gloria Niwemahoro, a woman who encourages me always to take big risks and pursue my dreams,” says Janvier. Janvier is founder and director of Dreaming for Change, a brand-new Burundian charitable project. It feeds 500 Burundian children daily porridge, trains women for micro-businesses, and is about to start a preschool program. Residents of Boone are involved big time in making the project a go. It seems as if Janvier, a Mandela Washington Fellow at Appalachian State University in 2017, is one of our own. Gloria, a college graduate in business and administration, is a Dreaming for Change board member and aspires to start a for-profit company that solves social problems. She and Janvier are new parents of a son, Favor. Their wedding story, and that of all successful Burundian weddings, has three parts. The first is the traditional Burundian ceremony. “I gathered my family and told them the news,” Janvier says. “They were so happy.” What follows, Janvier explains, is Gusaba Irembo, a pre-dowry, or introduction ceremony. The groom’s father visits the 62 | All About Weddings 2020
bride’s father and announces his son’s intention. If the bride’s family accepts, the next step is Gukwa, the dowry process. Janvier’s parents and a few family members went to Gloria’s house to discuss his intention to marry Gloria. They carried such gifts as fruits, groceries and nonalcoholic drinks. Next comes the payment of the dowry. “It’s not really a bride price,” Janvier claims, “but rather a way to show the bride’s family that you value their daughter.” Nowadays, if a man marries an educated bride, the dowry can be $1,100 or more. For less-educated young women who might not even have attended high school, the dowry can begin at $165. Janvier admits that, because of resigning his media job and starting Dreaming for Change, he was having trouble finding enough money for the dowry. What little he had saved, he was using to buy furniture, plus engagement and wedding rings. Luckily, by finding some video consulting gigs, he managed to put together the dowry money. The second part of the wedding process is the civil ceremony. This is the legal marriage, recognized by a government official. It secures the woman’s right to inherit her husband’s wealth or for the couple to share their wealth. Men who practice polygamy cannot legalize a second marriage. The third part of the wedding process is the religious wedding. In Burundi, the groom is responsible for all expenses and the entire wedding preparation. He must form a committee to help him. “My committee included 18 people,” Janvier says. “The big budget items were the reception hall rent, decorations and drinks. Generally food is not served at the reception. The actual church service is
similar to that in the United States.” One big difference between Burundian and U.S. weddings is that two days before the wedding, the bride has to take a pregnancy test. If it is positive, the wedding cannot take place. On the wedding day the groom and his family drive to the bride’s house to pick her up. Women attending the wedding dress in the Burundian traditional three-piece outfit, an imvutano, while the men wear suits similar to those worn in the U.S. The bride wears a typical white wedding dress, and is responsible for choosing the colors of the day. The wedding reception includes drumming and cultural groups performing traditional songs and dances. Many toasts are made. Every beer consumed is followed by a special toast, Ijambo, which translates, appropriately, to mean “wise words.” Well, a toast to you, Janvier and Gloria! May the wise words shared with you at your wedding light your path for many happy years.

A Quirky Guide to
Anniversary Gifts Years 1-10 Congratulations… you’re married! And, unless you, as a couple, have decided to opt out, you have now added another annual gift giving occasion – anniversary gifts. Evidence of anniversary gifts dates to 18th century Germany; however, gifts were only given at major milestones — silver for the 25th anniversary and gold for the 50th — and likely, only by the upper classes. Anniversary gifts grew in popularity during the Victorian era, when marriage became more about love matches and less about securing borders and financial alliances, as a way to acknowledge a couple’s commitment to the work required to make said marriage successful. Furthermore, several books from this period include lists of appropriate gifts by year, namely one (paper), five (wood), 10 (tin), 25 (silver), 50 (gold) and 75 (diamond). The exhaustive lists that we know today originated in the 1900s. 1910’s The Standard Home Reference Library expanded previous lists to include the first five years of marriage (paper, straw, candy, leather, wood) and numerous other years. Others appeared in Emily Post’s etiquette books, and in the 1930s, the American National Retail Jewelers Association got in on the anniversary gift action to sell more stuff and to establish yet another list of appropriate gifts – those of the sparkly variety. These suggested gifts, which have changed over time, are designed to symbolize marriage’s stability and durability; and therefore, increase in price and rarity as the years go by. Alas, nothing says lifelong commitment like something described as “stable and durable.” So, you could go traditional… or modern… or you could gift quirky. Quirky is defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “unusual in especially an interesting or appealing way.” I would rather give and receive gifts that fall into that category. Read on for my delightfully quirky anniversary gift suggestions for the first 10 years.

Traditional: Paper Modern: Clocks Quirky: Passports or Travel Photobooks I love the idea of gifting each other passports. I applaud travel for many reasons, but mainly because I believe it makes us kinder and better humans. Travel, especially abroad, is not only full of amazing experiences but is also a way to really (really) get to know each other, which is important for any successful marriage. If you have passports and have traveled together, turn the best of your hundreds of photos into a photobook. This is a great conversation starter, a way to reminiscence about your adventures, and a tradition that can be continued for many years and trips to come.

Traditional: Cotton Modern: China Quirky: Pillowtop Hammock* or Chinese Cookbook Lounging in a hammock on a warm, sunny day is amazingly relaxing. I recommend getting one of the pillowtop variety with a sturdy steel stand. Just add nibbles and umbrella drinks for an instant staycation. Extra points for getting one that holds both of you (see sturdy steel stand above). If cooking is a passion, consider gifting a cookbook of authentic Chinese recipes. Pick out a few to make together and plan a shopping trip to the closest Asian market for supplies. Or, if you have an unlimited budget, a trip to China will get you another stamp on those passports.

Traditional: Leather Modern: Crystal Quirky: Custom Leather Sneakers Lots of sneaker companies offer custom products and/or unique, artist-curated designs. One of my favorite brands is Bucketfeet (www.bucketfeet.com), which collaborates with a global community of artists to design handmade-to-order shoes, spark conversations and create a brighter world. Go for matching shoes, cohesive colors and/or create something that captures each other’s personalities. Together, spend an afternoon designing or selecting the perfect pairs, and then wear them out on a date night or weekend trip.
4
Traditional: Fruit or Flowers Modern: Appliances Quirky: Wine / Beer Fridge* or Star Wars-themed Instant Pot A wine fridge checks off both the fruit and appliance requirements – or if you prefer, a beer fridge – and keeps your bottles at the perfect temperature and ready to serve. Extra points for filling said fridge with your partner’s favorites. Alternatively, if you are both Star Wars fans, the new Star Wars-themed Instant Pots (available at Williams Sonoma in a variety of characters), are fun and functional and perhaps, sturdy and durable.
th
5
Traditional: Wood Modern: Silverware Quirky: Craft Bourbon Tasting* Bourbon, which originated in Kentucky, is uniquely American. To be classified as bourbon, the grain mash must be distilled from at least 51 percent corn and the spirit aged in new charred oak barrels. Research the best bourbons available and select a few to sample with your partner. Two of my picks are Four Roses Single Barrel and Angel’s Envy Kentucky Straight Bourbon. Extra points for planning a trip to Kentucky’s Bourbon Trail for an authentic tasting experience.
th
6
th
Traditional: Candy or Iron Modern: Wood Quirky: Fire Pit Building an old-fashioned fire pit together or picking out one of the metal variety is a great way to ensure cozy nights by a
crackling wood fire. Extra points for picking up a set of marshmallow roasting sticks and planning a gourmet s’mores bar.
7
Traditional: Wood or Copper Modern: Desk Sets Quirky: MasterClass Subscription* Why sit at a desk when you can learn online? MasterClass (www.masterclass.com) offers lessons from experts on a variety of topics – culinary arts, film and television, writing, music and entertainment, science, sports and games, fashion and photography, leadership and more. Gift one class or an unlimited subscription.

Traditional: Bronze or Pottery Modern: Linens or Lace Quirky: Bamboo Sheets So soft, so comfy… you may find it difficult to leave the bed. Bamboo sheets are luxurious and sustainable. And, if you take care of them, alas, durable – maybe those original anniversary gift list makers were on to something after all.

Traditional: Pottery or Willow Modern: Leather Quirky: Popcorn of the Month Subscription* or Savannah Getaway “Willow” made me think of the 1988 movie of the same name, and movies require popcorn. Make the fun last all year with a monthly subscription from the Popcorn Factory (www.thepopcornfactory.com). Extra points for planning a movie night to accompany each delivery. Not a fan of popcorn? Plan a trip to Savannah, Georgia! Stay in the historic district and stroll down streets and through parks lined with weeping willow. Enjoy vibrant restaurants, an abundance of antiques, and the eclectic art scene associated with the Savannah College of Art and Design. At six hours away from the High Country, Savannah is a quick and easy romantic destination.

th
Traditional: Tin or Aluminum Modern: Diamond Jewelry Quirky: Original Art Yes, diamonds are timeless, but so is original art. Visit local galleries together or commission a favorite artist. Photography, sculpture, a painting, even yard art… the search is half the fun. The only rule is to find a piece that you both love now and will continue to love and appreciate for the next 10 years of marriage and beyond. *Roger-approved: Actual gifts that I have given my husband, Roger, which he thought were pretty cool.

MOM’S WORLD
Coming Together The Partnership of Marriage While I’m of the opinion that no one is an expert on marriage, I have learned some things over the years from observation and experience. Marriage is a partnership or it is nothing. The day you get married, you face each other and feel that the world is for you. You have dreams. You have family. You have the shiny glow of love. You have an eternity of hope. It is a moment in time that is filled with all the potential of a relationship. Standing there, you feel the magnitude of that potential from all the people surrounding you. It is as if the two of you somehow represent all the hope of the loving friends and families, and, sometimes, it represents maybe what they once wished for themselves but did not accomplish in their own relationships. There is perfection in that moment, just as much as there is vulnerability. The storybook aspect of marriage is represented in so many fairy tales and movies that it is cliché, and the wedding industry is just that: an industry. But the real work of marriage 76 | All About Weddings 2020
aawmag.com
Marriage is a partnership or it is nothing. is somehow left out of the script. Most of us go into marriage without any idea as to how hard it is to fully commit yourself to loving someone “for better or worse” and sometimes the “worse” is just too bad to hang in there, as in relationships tainted by abuse, violence or addiction. However, there is a fine line between staying in long enough to work through relationship hardships and giving up because things have gotten hard. Just as couples stand facing each other with the world behind them, so too will there be moments in life when it is going to feel as if you’re standing back to back, leaning on each other, the two of you against the world. If there is any imbalance of power in any form — emotional, physical, financial, intellectual, health — then the marriage itself can be in jeopardy. Emotionally, if one person is continually investing in the relationship while another person is self-absorbed, eventually the emotional investor is going to become drained. Obviously, if there is a physical inequity or a partner continuously threatening physical violence, a marriage cannot thrive. While it is not uncommon for one partner to earn more or for a marriage to be a single-income marriage, if financially there is not commitment to equality and transparency between two people, a lot of resentment and tension can result. On the flip side, conversation and intellectual interaction are great assets in keeping a marriage vibrant. Lastly, a commitment to helping each other be healthy in mind, body, and spirit has great benefit; however, relationships that require a primary caregiver can create a dynamic that is not always healthy and alters the equality of other aspects of the relationship. Because of the multi-faceted aspects of the marital relationship, marriage is a dance of give and take like no other part of your life. But there are some principles that should never be compromised in this dance. Respect, self-worth, honesty and faithfulness should guide a person always
on this journey. Sometimes you fight for these things in your marriage. Sometimes you draw the line in the sand. But in a marriage where love prevails, sometimes you reach across the line to help bring your partner to the side they need to be on. You learn to be compassionate to help someone grow into being your partner but not at your own expense. Some transgressions are able to be forgiven, and some are not. Overall, a good marriage isn’t static but rather dynamic, reflective of growth and maturity that comes with time and sometimes growing pains. If a marriage becomes full of regret, then it is no longer a marriage but rather a prison. A good marriage requires love but also energy, effort, and active participation – those parts that are left out of the storybook or Hollywood script. As time rolls on and you have been together for years, making time to talk and listen, beyond the doldrums of daily routine, and making time to do those things that you enjoy that brought you together in the first place is critical. While holding true to certain expectations is important, redundancy and routine can crack the foundation of a marriage. In other words, you should be able to expect the courtesy of a phone call or good communication, but if the conversation evolves into nothing other than whether the dishwasher is clean or dirty and if the bills are paid, love will be lost somewhere in those dishes and bills. If you are embarking on this journey with your new love, or if you have been together with your partner for years, may it be a life with a soulmate that brings you happiness, love and kindness and a partnership always striving for equality.

I am innovative and up-to-date with technology in regards to real estate. At Blue Ridge Realty & Investments, I am selling a “lifestyle.” Many qualities and skills go into being an excellent REALTOR®. The most important is the ability to effectively discover and address the different needs, expectations and concerns. This ability comes from caring about people and having practical experience. Listening to your needs is the essence of good service, and my most important objective.
Karen Cleghorn joined Blue Ridge Realty & Investments in 2014. She came to the High Country in 1968 with her family where she grew up on Beech Mountain. She worked in Atlanta in the commercial real estate industry and acquired her broker’s license. Karen is a member of the High Country Association of Realtors and is licensed to sell real estate in North Carolina. She has extensive knowledge of the High Country, especially Beech Mountain, Banner Elk and Linville areas, including Elk River Club, Linville Ridge Club, Eagles Nest, Headwaters and The Blue Ridge Mountain Club in Blowing Rock. Raised in North Carolina for a majority of my life, I knew of the vast beauty that N.C. provided from the ocean to the mountains. But the mountains were calling. I moved to the High Country to attend ASU, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Business Management. With passion for the High Country, service, people, and homes; I joined Blue Ridge Realty as a Real Estate Assistant, while mastering procedures of Real Estate operations, and immersing myself in community activities. Obtaining my NC Real Estate Brokers license allowed me to serve the property owners and buyers of the area. I am committed to representing my clients honestly, diligently, and selflessly. Since purchasing Real Estate is one of the biggest investments in anyone's life, my guiding principle is to make it as positive and gratifying as possible. Although Real Estate is my full-time career, my family and faith ground me in being the best I can be to do the work I love every day.
