Finding your set budget should be one of the first things you do when planning a wedding. Setting an overall budget and looking into your priorities can help you organize your finances and not go vastly outside of your price range. For many couples, the venue is the most important part of their wedding experience. By looking around and booking early, couples can guarantee they have the best venue for the best price. When deadlines are fast approaching, options are much more limited and you might end up paying way above your price limit or settling for a less-than-perfect wedding venue. UPDATE:
Townhomes At Brookshire Continues to Provide New Construction Options in the High Country
“An innovative community where sunrises and sunsets are exquisite, and stars are the only sounds at night. ... homes are contemporary and innovative. The grounds are safe and pristine. It is a community with a happy heartbeat and visionary professionals. From reservation to closing, my experience was seamless. This is an oasis tucked on the top of a mountain.” Beth C.
When looking for a mountain getaway, we were so excited to find Townhomes At Brookshire – great location, mountain views, new construction, perfect size – and we were not disappointed! We were so pleased with the process from contract to construction to closing. The team was easy to work with, responsive, and professional. Our home is well-built and the property well-maintained. We appreciate the partnership and guidance from everyone involved.” Sue D. and Lynn T.
Developers with RCPBD Investments, LLC have completed construction in phase I and 2A of Townhomes At Brookshire, with the completion of 83 new townhouses to date and underway with phase 2B. This is a community with 206 homes proposed, located 4/10ths of a mile on the left past the Appalachian State University soccer fields off Brookshire Road. Developers Rick Miller (Owner of Miller Properties Inc.), Patrick Morgan (with Keller Williams High Country), Chris Hodges (Owner of Chris Hodges Construction, LLC), Dan Nguyen and Bryan Pitts partnered to purchase the 95.12 acre property in January 2020 for the project. Miller said he and his partners had recognized for years that
there was a need in Watauga County for this type of housing. “The project is designed and marketed to serve individuals and families who seek moderately priced housing that is convenient to town, parks and amenities,” according to the project’s proposal. Morgan said the project was created to assist individuals at all stages of life. Those looking to buy their first home, those retiring and anyone who would like a home where outside maintenance is provided. “It’s our attempt, although hard because of pricing in our area ··· at trying to make a more affordable housing project,” Morgan said. Prices start in the mid $300s; with options available for one, two and three-bedroom with and without
“I’ve loved living in the Townhomes At Brookshire community for the past two years. It’s perfectly located close to town, but it still feels like you are in the countryside. I’ve seen it grow in amenities and landscaping, both of which add value and beauty to the community. I’m so thankful to call it my home.” Savannah S.
garages. New Construction contracts and reservations for phase 2B are being accepted for meadow sites and lots with views. Approximately 15% percent of the 95.12 acre property will be developed, which Miller said will leave room for amenities like hiking trails to accompany the existing dog park. Boone is a venue with indoor and outdoor spaces, a water wheel, a waterfall, an outdoor patio and a cascading rock creek. Hidden Pastures Farm is a venue that includes outdoor and indoor spaces, a converted barn, a covered outdoor patio and mountain-top scenery in Fleetwood. Valle Crucis Vineyard is a venue located on a vineyard, offering indoor and outdoor spaces as well as vacation rentals. Once you have found the ideal wedding space and booked your venue, couples can look at more costeffective options for the other many aspects of their wedding. One such option is finding the right caterers for your event. While a traditional full meal service or buffet is common among High Country weddings, more popular trends have arisen that offer ways for couples to save money and also feed their guests. Some couples have invested in a food truck to cater their outdoor receptions. This option could limit the need for plate ware and the need for staff members to serve the food. Other couples have opted for the food bar which elegantly serves one kind of food. One example is a loaded potato bar complete with mashed potatoes, chives, cheese, bacon, sausage, vegetables, sour cream and more depending on the couple’s desires. This fun alternative allows the guests to be fed after the ceremony without the hassle of a full waitstaff or elaborate plating, saving money for the couple. Elegant finger food and desserts in an intricate display have also been popular among shorter and smaller weddings that don’t warrant a full meal experience. If you want alcohol at your wedding, a full bar can be quite expensive. The money used for the full bar could have 10 • All About Weddings • 2024

Arguably the most important form
of beautification for a wedding are the outfits, specifically the wedding dress and groom’s tuxedo. While most wedding dresses will be worn only once, the groom’s tuxedo or suit can become a multifunctional outfit. The groom can wear the suit on anniversaries or special occasions. Keeping this in mind, couples can organize their outfits around a suit and color scheme that would allow for the groom to re-wear his wedding day attire. Another solution that has become popular is renting the groom’s groomsmen’s suits for the event. If your color scheme and dream wedding do not accommodate a reusable option for the groom, then renting might be the option for you. If second-hand isn’t an issue for you, thrifting bridesmaid dresses can also be a fun adventure for the bridal party to enjoy before the wedding. When the day is finally done, all of the planning comes to fruition, you want to be able to look back on your special day and remember the good times, the people who loved and supported you and the moment you made your promise to love one another for richer or for poorer and in sickness and in health. With the trend of no-phone weddings and receptions, it can be vital to have someone there to document your day for you. Hiring a photographer can sometimes be a splurge that uses up money you might want somewhere else. An alternative for those who want no cellphones to ruin the day, but also don’t have or want to spend the money on a professional photographer or videographer can look into disposable cameras.

Disposable cameras have made a comeback just like Polaroids did a few years ago. Having small cameras for your guests to take pictures with allows for more candid shots from a variety of perspectives. Couples can then look back at their wedding and see it through the eyes of their guests and loved ones. 2024 • All About Weddings • 11
Let love bloom
The Art of Floral Arrangements Floral arrangements are a staple centerpiece for many different occasions. Whether it’s a sweet sixteen party, a baby shower, or even home decor, the art of these striking arrangements are not hard to miss. Over the years, the High Country has become a top destination for weddings galore. The mountainous scenery and breathtaking landscape is sure to be the perfect backdrop for a couple’s special day. Though the stress of the big day can be a lot to handle, those looking to say “I do” don’t have to worry about finding the perfect floral arrangement for their heartwarming ceremony. Marley Turbyfill, owner and lead designer at Goose and Gardenia, a division of Callista Flower Co. located in Banner Elk, said that the art of Floral Arrangements has shifted in her years as a florist. “Over the course of my career, I have seen the rustic chic theme of the early 2010’s give way to other styles like dried blooms and grasses to monochromatic, color-blocked floral displays,” said Turbyfill. “Keeping up with these trends can be both exciting and challenging. While it’s important to stay current and adapt to changing tastes, it’s equally essential for florists to maintain the integrity of their unique design.” In addition to the change in style, Turbyfill also noted that a movement has begun spreading across the floral industry with more sustainable designs. This includes eliminating floral foam and sourcing florals from local farms instead of importing blooms. 12 • All About Weddings • 2024

“There are many ways to reduce the waste associated with the industry,” Turbyfill said. “It’s a shift that was pretty unheard of when I first started in the industry, but it is something that I am embracing more and more as I work towards becoming a fully sustainable florist.” Down the road in Boone, Fuschia Moss, founder of Fuschia Moss Floral Design, began her career in the early 2000s, creating her own floral arrangement for her special day in 2003. With over 20 years of experience, Moss said loves learning the newest trends in the floral business. “We are fortunate in this era of social media that many designers share new trends, tips and instruction online,” said Moss. “I like to freelance as well with other designers in our region and this gives me the opportunity to observe other styles, trends, techniques and business models. I love learning and watching other designers. The trends come and go and we just have to be flexible with what our Brides and Grooms envision for their special day.” In today’s society, DIY has become a trend for many. From floral arrangements to home decor, it isn’t hard to find inspiration online. Both Moss and Turbyfill said they have seen clients who prefer to DIY their floral arrangements. Doing your own arrangement can be cost-effective and allow your own creativity to shine. Local Ashe County native, Brooklyn Shue decided to do her own arrangements for the big day. “My actual flowers were from a florist, but I did the table toppers myself,” said Shue. “I mainly did it to save money and it was simple buying in bulk and creating them myself.” When looking into wedding florals, many florists say it’s important to weigh your options. Depending on pricing, offerings and general style, florists want to make sure their clients have the most beautiful arrangements they can possibly think of. “As a client, it’s essential to

understand that florists will do everything they can to bring your floral vision to life - however, at times, they may not be able to fulfill every single request due to seasonal bloom variations or budget constraints,” said Turbyfill. “Therefore, it’s best to give your florist some artistic freedom and embrace their
individual style, which ultimately leads to the best results.” No matter your floral needs, there is always a way to find what you want. Whether it’s from a local florist, ordering in bulk or even creating your CONTINUED ON PAGE 33

No less important than the bride’s gown and bridesmaids’ dresses is the menswear. Between renting and buying, ensuring the fit is perfect, alterations (yes, a suit needs a trip to the tailor, too) and the style and vibe of the wedding itself, the groom’s and groomsmen’s clothing is an underrated opportunity for his sense of style to shine. Buying a suit and renting both have benefits and drawbacks. A rental is much quicker, especially if you’ve accidentally waited until the last minute. Four to six months before a wedding is the appropriate time to buy the menswear, especially the groom’s suit, but if the groom opts to rent, a rental only needs a few weeks’ notice. A rental is also typically priced as part of a bundle, including the jacket, pants, shirt,

can hold their resale value, too. Thrifting and buying vintage are excellent, sustainable options to find suits with more classic colors and silhouettes, especially given ‘70s through ‘90s vintage’s space in the limelight. Owning your suit means you can have it tailored to fit you precisely; tailoring is definitely recommended, as the groom should look and feel his best, too, and tailoring allows a suit to drape and fit perfectly (very few suits fit anyone perfectly off the rack). Rental suits can typically only have minor tailoring, such as hemming a pant leg or lengthening a jacket sleeve slightly. Buying can also introduce an 16 • All About Weddings • 2024

for your wedding is now commonplace. Gone is the worry of something going wrong or not being able to achieve your desired look. Today, having on-site hair and makeup stylists at your disposal on the big day is almost a given. Most hair stylists will require consultations as well as trial runs to ensure that the bride’s hair is not a worry on her long list of wedding todos. The planning that goes into your wedding day beforehand will make the day itself much easier. In the High Country, hair stylists like Shear Shakti in Boone, Mia’s Mark in Jefferson, Canvas Beauty Bar in Boone and Battle Born Beauty in Banner Elk will have a specific wedding coordinator and team to help make your day nothing less than perfect. The ability to have your hair, and thus, yourself look your best, can be a certainty. Wedding day hairstylists also can provide bridesmaid styles for your wedding party. When that special day arrives, the one you’ve been planning for months or maybe even years, the one you’ve dreamt of since you were a little girl, the day where you are the center of attention above all others, you want to look your best. On your wedding, the last thing you want to be worried about is a bad hair day. Decades ago, wedding day hairstylists were reserved for celebrities and members of high society. Having a wedding hair stylist was more akin to having a personal clothing designer or stylist for when celebrities would attend galas, award shows and red carpets. For those outside of high society, the matriarchs of the family and bridesmaids would gather around the bride the morning of the wedding to create the perfect look. However, this came with a risk. What if you had never practiced the look before, or what if you wanted to go with some showstopper style that required more skill than your helpful bridal party could offer? layered blowouts to butterfly cuts and middle parts. Exploring natural hair, specifically natural curls, has also swept the nation in popularity. When it comes to your wedding day, however, most brides want to dazzle with a hairstyle that will last through the entire event from walking down the aisle to the sparkler send-off, making up-do’s a common choice for brides and bridesmaids. In the High Country, especially during the fall, winds can be a worry for brides with down hairstyles or even long ponytails wanting outdoor venues and wedding ceremonies. Styles like the sleek bun, the crown up-do, the semimessy up-do and the chignon bun can be bride and bridesmaid favorites. Whatever the hairstyle, hairstylists are usually able to meet the requests. Making sure to research your stylist, bringing inspirational photos of your wants and booking a trial run well in advance can be the difference between success and disaster for a bride. Many hairstylists offer makeup packages alongside their wedding hair services since the two are so intricately tied in ensuring you look your best on the day it might matter to you most. While some brides like to go bold and beautiful on the day when no one can say otherwise, a trend in bridal makeup has veered towards the more natural no-makeup makeup look. the natural beauty of the bride, they can look like themselves in the photos while not worrying over a stressful acne breakout and highlighting the color of their eyes and the uniqueness of their facial features. It’s important to look into whether your hair stylist will travel with you to the destination you have chosen for your wedding. Mia’s Mark in Jefferson advertises that they “will provide services to anyone, anywhere” with a travel fee. Canvas Beauty Bar in Boone offers potential bridal clients some helpful tips for making their trial or wedding day go as smoothly as possible. Clients should arrive with dry, clean or day-old hair, a clean and moisturized face for makeup styling, pictures of what they want to help the stylists visualize their dreams and bring any hair pieces or veils they want, advises Canvas Beauty Bar. deciding on the perfect hairstyle for you is whether you will be wearing a veil or not. Whether opting for a short or long veil, the visibility of your hair and the style you might want to accompany the hairpiece can change. Low-style buns like a sleek bun or chignon bun can nicely accommodate a lower-sitting veil while down, half-up half-down and ponytail styles can offer more room to place a veil higher on the head. Looking at the neckline and back of your wedding dress can also help to determine which hairstyle you might prefer. A detailed back of your wedding dress, with pearl buttons or intricate lace might warrant an up-do to showcase more of the dress’s style, while an open-backed dress might accommodate longer hair cascading down behind the bride. The same principle can be applied to the dress’s neckline. A trend in wearing up-dos and high ponytails with higher necklines and turtlenecks can be seen in modern celebrity styles and social media fashion influencers.

Tips for finding the perfect photographer for you
Find the style and theme you want for the photos
It can be tough translating your vision into words, but search engine tools can help you find a specific theme. “Hop on Pinterest or Instagram and do a little research to determine which style of photography you prefer, documentary, light and airy, traditional, dark and moody,” said Megan Sheppard of Megan Sheppard Photography. “There are many styles to choose from but it’s ultimately up to you and your preference. Searching for concept photos can also be great for inspiration. Once you have an idea of what type of photos you want, search for local photographers who specialize in your theme. 22 • All About Weddings • 2024
Victoria Thomas of Victoria Blair Photography said that it is important for brides to look at all different types of photographers because they might find a style that is a better fit for them. “Talk to multiple photographers and compare which one fits your needs and wants,” Thomas said. “It’s kind of like window shopping! It doesn’t hurt our feelings one bit to not be chosen over someone else. Our ultimate goal is for a bride to be happy!” Dive into the photographer’s work

As most brides will say, capturing perfect moments from weddings is one of the most important parts of the big day. Reminiscing on each special moment from getting ready to the “I do,” wouldn’t be possible without finding the perfect photographer for you. The High Country has many photographers whose work and style vary drastically. Finding the right photographer may sound daunting, but with these tips and tricks you and your photographer can make sure that wedding day will be remembered just as you envisioned it.
at their website, but also their portfolios and albums from other weddings. It can also give you pose and setting ideas that you know the photographer can make look good. “Sometimes, I send links of different weddings I’ve done even if they don’t ask because if they don’t like what they see, then I’m not the one for them,” Thomas said. “It also gives a great idea across the board what to expect for the finalized album.” Seeing firsthand the finished product gives you the best idea of if this is the photographer and style for you. Schedule a consultation and engagement session
What better way to see if you and the photographer are a great fit than a test run? Whether a virtual phone call or in-person meeting, this is a great opportunity to connect with the photographer, talk logistics and create a detailed list of the type of photos you want and who all you want pictures of and with. Consultations also allow you to get to know one another and how each of you works. An important part of photography is channeling who you and your partner are through film. Therefore, most photographers dedicate a lot of time to getting to know you, your quirks

and things about yourself that you want to be translated through your photos. “Having a good connection allows your day and event to go smoother as well,” Thomas said. “With great connection comes great communication and that is key to all aspects of the wedding day itself.” Your photographer is going to spend a lot of time with you on your wedding day, so make sure you find someone you mesh well with personality-wise! Be open and honest about timelines and budgets
Timelines are essential when it comes to booking and scheduling with your photographer. In the past, it was more common to book vendors for weddings a year or so in advance. “Start your search early! Photographers, especially in the High Country, are one of the first vendors a client books when planning their wedding
and often very early,” Sheppard said. However, as health and financial obstacles make planning that far ahead unpredictable, a lot of photographers allow booking only a few months in advance.” Knowing your budget is important in all aspects of wedding planning, especially photography. Photographers can have broad price ranges, so finding one in your budget that can still deliver what you want is possible. Just like there are many different photography styles out there, there are also plenty of photographers with great portfolios that won’t break the bank. Say I Don’ t
to Pre-Wedding Stress
When planning for the wedding of your dreams, there are so many factors to consider. Where will the newlyweds share their first kiss as a married couple? Will there be entertainment for guests? What foods will those in attendance be treated to? How will the venue be decorated to create the perfect backdrop for it all? Each attribute of a wedding comes together to create a unique experience and memory for the couple and their loved ones. However, all of these factors make for a seemingly endless to-do list, and a pricey one at that. One local woman, Megan Carter, shared some of the unique approaches she took while planning her 2020 wedding. Megan recently celebrated her third wedding anniversary with her husband, Caleb, and looks back on her big day as a dream. “Overall, I do not think there is anything I wish I knew or did differently,” Megan said. “I’d say save money and put it towards the honeymoon or first home.” One way Megan kept her wedding
planning low stress while adding personal touches was by doing creating her own decore to be set up at the venue, the Ashe Shrine Club in Jefferson. Her mother-in-law made all of the floral arrangements and boutonnieres used in the wedding. After taking a trip to the craft store to purchase flowers and greenery to make arrangements, she spray-painted dried hydrangeas to fit the color scheme to make boutonnieres. “We would shop their sales to get flowers for a decent price,” Megan said. Instead of having their wedding catered, the Carters opted for finger foods made by their loved ones. Family favorites made with care helped make the day more special and were served as a light lunch. There were small sandwiches, fruits, veggies and chicken salad pinwheels. This was in addition to the wedding cake, of course. Many brides will book a cosmetologist to get them glammed up to walk down the aisle, which is a great choice for those with the budget and preference to do so. However, professional hair and makeup artists can be expensive.
Megan opted for one of her dear friends to do her hair and makeup, which cut costs and allowed her the comforting support of a bestie while her nerves set in. Another one of Megan’s friends was there to take pictures to capture the radiant bride. Even without a hired photographer, Megan has many gorgeous photos to remind her of the day she added “Mrs.” to her name. Every bride is different. While some create a Pintrest board and spreadsheet planning every detail, some hire a coordinator to make their vision come to fruition. It’s more than okay to be any kind of bride and have any kind of wedding. Take it from Megan, relieving some of the stress of planning a wedding helps you focus on what really matters celebrating spending forever with your person. Find your vibe:
Wedding Day Makeup Aesthetic Guide from a Professional Esthetician
What is your vision for your wedding day makeup look? Do you have a bridal makeup aesthetic? What feeling or vibe do you want to evoke on this most important day? These are questions I ask my brides when helping to determine their wedding day makeup look. Most times they pull up a picture on Instagram that is perfect in every way. I explain that much of this look is not possible since I can’t put the filter directly on their face. A more realistic source to look at is photos from the red carpet. Many considerations tie together to create the picture you want to paint. First and foremost, you must say “yes to the dress” as the dress will give you cues to capture the mood you want on your big day. Your flowers, the season, the CYNTHIA VIOLA PHOTOGRAPHY, CYNTHIA VIOLA setting—these are all important pieces that will create the ambiance that will was in a castle setting—gorgeous! make your wedding day unforgettable. I highly recommend that you remove Whether your dress style is ball gown potential stress by hiring a professional fairytale, boho natural, or trumpet sexy, makeup artist who knows how to deliver it can lend to your makeup look. For the look you want. This will be a person example, if your dress carries a beachy who can help you identify and create your or boho vibe then a regal classic makeup most beautiful you. Your makeup artist will look may not be practical and it most likely use products and techniques that will last would be difficult to maintain in the heat, all day and you will look flawless in your sand, wind, etc. photos. I did makeup for a glam-goth wedding a If you are a DIY bride, here are a few years back. The bride wore an elegant few elementary basics: make sure your black ballroom gown for the evening foundation base color is on point because wedding, so deep smoky gradient shadows no matter how beautiful those eyes are of purple, gray and black with plum lips you will look unusual wearing the wrong and a softly contoured face were very appropriate especially since the wedding base color. only use colors that complement your skin tone. I can’t instruct you on application to achieve these styles but here again, there are zillions of examples on social media—remember my above warning on authenticity. Take a look at your dress-- how does it make you feel? Now let’s take a look at a few makeup styles: Traditional— classic and timeless appeal, emphasizes natural beauty while enhancing features, resulting in a polished elegant look that never goes out of style. Romantic—think soft and elegant, flawless, matte base, soft shadows, blended colors, textures, fluttery lashes and freshly defined brows to pop the look. Glam—showy, red carpet, gradient shadow colors on lush lashes, glossy lips, softly defined brows, similar shades on eyes lips with a subtle color pop on cheeks. Classic—timeless, elegant, classy, attention to detail, flawless base, slight contouring, accent on eyes, nude lips or otherwise bold red shades, blended lip pencil, natural blush shade, accentuate one feature and blend, blend, blend. Boho/Beachy—laid back, soft embellishments, minimal makeup look, natural self shine, soft eyes softly smudged, earth tones, sun-kissed glow, lips neutral and simple. CONTINUED ON PAGE 31

THE NAME CHANGE GAME
FUR AND LACE PHOTOGRAPHY, AJA WHITE
The wedding of your dreams is about to come true: the weather is perfect, the flowers are beautiful, the vows have been spoken, the rings exchanged. As you turn to face the congregation, the officiant says, “I present to you Mr. and Mrs. -----” what? Although the most recent data released from Pew Research Center indicates that about 80% of women choose to take their husband’s name, this is not always the case in modern times. There are options and the choices made are for a variety of reasons. Brides who adopt the family name of their husband may be just following a patriarchal tradition that dates back to medieval times. In those times, a legal identity was established with a marriage that provided cultural stability as the woman was deemed a “possession” of 28 • All About Weddings • 2024
the man. This system of “coverture” was brought to the United States by colonists but has eroded somewhat over time for a variety of reasons. Today, a woman changing her name to her husband’s comes with some thoughtful consideration on many levels. For some, the tradition itself is important while for others it symbolizes a commitment to the union and the validation of the relationship. Another issue is the names of future children and wanting that name to be a symbol of the love shared by husband and wife and carried forward for generations to come. There are also some women for whom their maiden name is not important or carries unpleasant memories that are meant to be erased. For those women, it is a change of negative history into a positive future. However, one of the choices being
made by the approximately 20% of women who do not go with tradition is to hyphenate the last name. In this way, the bride’s family name is preserved and is passed on to the children of the marriage in a “double-barrel” surname. Although it often creates a lengthy surname, the significance of this choice is considerable. This is not uncommon in many Latin American countries where both men and women “carry two last names, the first from their father and the second from their mother.” (The Hill, 10/23.) This research also reports that about 30% of Hispanic women keep their last name after marriage. In fact, women in China, Korea and Vietnam keep their surnames after marrying. The choice for the woman to keep her surname and not accept her husband’s last name at all often is related to CONTINUED ON PAGE 30

professional considerations. In the medical field, female physicians often maintain that identity as it is the name on their diplomas and certifications. Likewise, authors and many in academia often use their surname as it is their literary and professional identity. Another option is “meshing” the two surnames and creating an entirely new name for both the bride and the groom. This name could be constructed from each of the family surnames or something totally new but distinctive and meaningful for the couple. Though many look at someone adopting their spouse’s last name as a practice in heterosexual relationships, many queer couples choose to do the same. While the Supreme Court ruled in 2015 that same-sex couples have the right to marry and a marriage license is typically the key element to post-wedding name changes, there can still be added difficulties for queer couples. Laws change state-to-state, and sometimes even county-tocounty, so be sure to check your local regulations regarding name changes. The process of changing one’s name does, however, require some planning as there are a number of legal documents that need to be altered: Social Security card, driver’s license, passport, voter registration and tax information to name a few. If the couple is arranging joint accounts, banking documents and direct deposit forms will need to be changed along with insurance policies and titles to homes and vehicles. Making a change with regard to mortgage documentation could be significantly important down the road. In fact, a business has arisen out of this need to change names, one that will do it all, for a fee of course. (One such business is “NewlyNamed.com”) Also, all of the email accounts and other social media information will need to be updated. Some of these changes can be made easily and should be made fairly soon after the wedding. But some of the licensure changes can be put off for some time. For instance, in the teaching or nursing field, there is a charge for renewal of the license on a timed schedule, every so many years. If the license is not immediately due for renewal, brides often wait until their previous license is about to expire before making the name change and incurring the expense. Whatever the decision, it should be made with CYNTHIA VIOLA PHOTOGRAPHY, CYNTHIA VIOLA

Ashlyn & Gene

A LOVE MEANT TO BE
• September 16, 2023 • THE BARN ON NEW RIVER, WEST JEFFERSON, NC Their first visit to the High Country proved to be life-changing for Ashlyn and Gene- it ended up being the setting for the best day of their lives. Before their wedding, they had no connection to the area. The couple wed at the Barn on New River located along the picturesque banks of the New River in Ashe County, North Carolina. Originally, the Walkers planned to exchange vows in the Asheville/Brevard area of the state. However, the venues they had in mind were already booked for the fall season or were out of their price range. The Barn on New River was the first and only venue they toured in the High Country. Ashlyn shared that they fell in love with the place and it was “meant to be.” Their epic love story resulted from an everyday occurrence, going to work. After completing her college career in 2017, Ashlyn accepted her first job as a graduate at a start-up firm in Charlotte. Gene was the first employee and she was the second. Ashlyn recalled that he arrived late on her first day and ended up being her trainer. The two soon became best friends and after two years of friendship, 34 • All About Weddings • 2024

ABOUT THE WEDDING: Friends to newly-weds, Ashlyn and Gene will always remember their first trip to the High Country - their wedding day! decided to date instead. The proposal was an event that was both touching and beautiful. After Gene planned a big trip for them to Puerto Rico in May 2022, Ashlyn had an idea he may propose on the Caribbean island. Her thoughts became reality and Gene got down on one knee following a candlelit dinner on the beach. Unbeknownst to Ashlyn, he had asked some friends they met while on their trip to record the proposal from afar so it could be livestreamed to their family and friends. “Even though we were far, far away all of our loved ones kind of got to be there
for the proposal which was really cool,” Ashlyn shared. “The best part really was realizing that my family was on live stream. He got down on his knee and he asked me and I said “Yes” and he said ‘Alright, wave “Hi” to everybody!’” She was initially confused but after looking at the phone she saw her parents, siblings and closest friends on the screen. The Walker’s love story has just the perfect amount of normalcy and magic. Two work friends turned lovers who now have a special bond and memories in the High Country. Ashlyn shared some tips for brides-to-
be. They were mostly centered around not “sweating the small stuff” and enjoying the process. “There were so many moments during the planning process that I overwhelmed myself with the smallest things,” Ashlyn said. “Everything felt like ‘the most important thing’ when it was not, and that really took away from the enjoyment of planning at times. Her next tip may seem odd at first,
but it would be to be excited about what might go wrong. “Those mistakes or wrongs feed into the best memories of the day,” Ashlyn said. “What really makes the wedding is not that you picked the perfect shade of pink, but rather what happened that day. What made you feel joy on the most joyous day of your life.” Her final tip was to relax and savor the entire planning experience.

“Your day will be absolutely perfect... and then all the hype eventually fades,” Ashlyn said. “Planning was so hard at times but I would do it all over again to feel those feelings leading up and live that day again.” While reminiscing on their special day during Autumn in Ashe County, both Ashlyn and Gene shared what made their wedding day memorable.

Sadler & Ryon • October, 22, 2023 • OVERLOOK BARN, BANNER ELK, NC CYNTHIA VIOLA PHOTOGRAPHY, CYNTHIA VIOLA
On a crisp, autumn afternoon in October, Sadler and Ryon Bellamy shared their love and commitment to each other in front of their dearest friends and family. Back in 2015, if you had told Sadler and Ryon that they would be married eight years later, they might not have believed you. Sparks flew when they first met in October of 2015 when Sadler visited the Queen’s University of Charlotte’s women’s lacrosse team, where Ryon was a freshman on the men’s lacrosse team. For four years, Sadler and Ryon’s timing was off. Their friendship grew, as did their flirtations, but Sadler was in a longdistance relationship and later Ryon got into a relationship of his own. Now in 2019, and both newly-single, they both thought of each other as “the one that got away.” “When I was single, I didn’t really want anyone to know yet,” Sadler said. Thanks to Sadler’s roommate’s boyfriend, a friend of Ryon’s, Ryon learned that Sadler was single and within two weeks, they were dating and the rest is history. On October 22, 2023, Sadler and Ryon were married at Overlook Barn in Beech Mountain surrounded by gorgeous views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. “The time Ryon and I had while everyone else was at cocktail hour was 56 • All About Weddings • 2024

one of my absolute best parts of the day because it was just us,” Sadler said. “We could slow down, absorb the day’s events, and cherish the time together as newlyweds.” Their “homey, rustic-chic” wedding could only be described as such because of all that their families did to give their big day a sentimental touch. Sadler’s bouquet was made up of Forget-Me-Nots, also known as Bellamy Blues, to signify her new last name. Each table at their reception had little pots of ivy, symbolic of their dog and flower girl, Ivy. Sadler’s mother made most of the wedding decor and Ryon constructed their arbor which they will keep forever. Sadler’s brother was even their officiant. And to tie it all together, their gift favors
were jars of maple syrup and honey harvested from Ryons’s family’s land in New York. They concluded the evening with a private dance to “I See the Light” from Sadler’s favorite movie, “Tangled.” As the newlywed couple made their exit, their friends and family bid them farewell with floating paper lanterns,
another nod to the movie. Since their big day, Sadler and Ryon have settled into newlywed life. Sadler is a travel nurse in the pediatric intensive care unit and Ryon is a fireman for the city of Greensboro. Sadler’s piece of advice for newlyweds? Take time to slow down and enjoy the newlywed phase because life hits you hard

right after. “Try to soak in those few months afterward with your new person,” Sadler said. “Yeah, you have your whole life to be together, but also you’re probably gonna miss them because you just got married. Maybe you shouldn’t do all these things right now. Just enjoy being home if you can.”

THE PROPOSAL

“We had a bit of an unconventional engagement. We decided we wanted to get engaged on Christmas 2022. We knew we wanted to get married in the fall but did not want to wait over a year to get married. So, we started planning the wedding before we were officially engaged. We officially got engaged in April 2023 at a small botanical garden in Charlotte. Afterward, we called our families, made dinner for our friends, hung out, and celebrated. I love that we did everything a little out of order. It made us feel even more confident in our relationship and our decision to get married. On the day we officially got engaged, it was so lovely going home and spending time with people we love (virtually and in real life).”

YOUR SOMETHING NEW Unique Vendors of the High Country
70 • All About Weddings • 2024
Colvard Crutch restored the interior by hand, and the space has been handed down through generations of women. Its current owner, Orion community native Mallory Phillips, acquired the building in 2019 and renovated the space once more with her mother, even hosting her own wedding in the chapel. These days, the chapel is mostly used for wedding services, and the schoolhouse (which can comfortably sit 50, about half what the chapel can) is ideal for small receptions, rehearsal dinners and cocktail hours. Couples booking the Orion Schoolhouse & Chapel reserve the space for the full weekend, including all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so there is ample time to enjoy the property. The owners offer tours and pricing details based on inquiries for specific dates. The High Country is also home to

As a North Carolina and regional wedding destination, the High Country has no shortage of unique venues and vendors to help you and your guests celebrate your big day. Most wedding planners recommend starting with the venue; this dictates the final date for the wedding, as well as getting clear on what services are available to other vendors (like electricity, early setup time, any exclusive vendor relationships, etc.) Couples scheduling High Country weddings come for the beautiful mountain settings, of which there’s great variation in size, accommodations, and distance to local towns. Orion Schoolhouse & Chapel Hidden in the Orion community in Ashe County, a renovated and restored schoolhouse and chapel welcomes couples hosting intimate weddings of 100 or fewer. The 1902 chapel and mid-1800s schoolhouse are about five minutes’ walk apart down a wooded path. The venue is at the base of Mount Jefferson near the New River, about half an hour from Boone and 10 minutes from West Jefferson, surrounded by woods. The schoolhouse served children from its inception up until the 1940s. Orion Chapel’s congregation was organized on Feb. 10, 1886, according to the venue’s website, although the building wasn’t completed until 1902. The original stained glass and pews are both still in use in the chapel today. The chapel’s walls are an important piece of history—they’re American chestnut wood, from before the chestnut blight killed most of the trees. No new chestnut lumber has been sold in the U.S. in decades, according to the American Chestnut Foundation. After the congregation combined with another Jefferson church in 1978, Edith
full-service drink experiences, including alcoholic and nonalcoholic options. Couples booking drink services in the High Country will find numerous options for cocktails, beers, cider and wine, all produced locally in Boone and beyond. Ginseng Mobile Bar Starting in 2020, owner Tara Hamlin opened Ginseng Mobile Bar to bring together “a love for vintage things, several cocktails and one crazy, awesome idea!” Named after the ginseng root, an herb native to Appalachia which is both rare and frequently sought after by foragers, Hamlin wanted to pay homage to her roots here and to invoke the valuable, sought-after root as representative of her aspirations for the business.

“While it was not always fun to spend hours looking for a specific plant leaf, there was a certain magic to it, one that has never left me and one that I believe never leaves those that experience it,” she said, describing “hunting for sang” with her father and grandfather. Using a 1968 Tag-Along vintage camper—the only camper bar in the region—the mobile bar services eastern Tennessee, southwest Virginia and western North Carolina. Beyond the flagship camper bar, indoor or outdoor satellite bars and bar carts are available for smaller and private events, too; for example, a mimosa bar cart for the bridal suite and whiskey-themed cart for the groom’s room. Most bar packages include a tasting and consultation to ensure the couple’s vision comes to life. With domestic and craft beers, wine, ciders, seltzers, cocktails and mocktails, there’s drinks to cater to a wide variety of tastes. Hamlin emphasizes that Ginseng is structured to create a bar experience, as she describes it. The company works with couples to “create a vibe” with curated and thrifted decor, thoughtfully selected to align with the wedding’s theme and color scheme. The team meets with couples to create a drink menu, and the camper’s tap system has space for two draft beers, signature cocktails and mocktails, wines and more. Hamlin’s favorite drink is the espresso martini, but tied for most popular CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE

constructing a secure house. The best vows also incorporate considerations for times when the house is in need of repair, expansion or even a move. There is quite a range of how the betrothed approaches vows. Some just say “I do” to whatever the officiant offers, following strong religious tradition or perhaps just the easiest path. Some write their own simple or eloquent prose expressing their enchantment with their beloved and their assurances of
FUR AND LACE PHOTOGRAPHY, AJA WHITE
Amazing wedding days are about declaring and celebrating love; declaring that the betrothed have found “home” in their relationship and will commit to taking care of that home. Happy couples invite others to celebrate with them – whether that be only the people required to officiate and witness a legal ceremony or a large extended network of family, friends and community. Wise couples invite trustworthy well-wishers to support the health of their marriage through the inevitable ups and downs to come. Loving communities step up with that support as part of their broader home. The unique version of ceremony and celebration - from barebones simplicity to elaborate - is usually the focus of most planning, discussion, and social media posts. However, the exchanged declarations and promises are the foundation for a rich marriage. Good marriage vows are “house plans” drawn by our best selves with all the joy and hope that has led them to declare their commitment. Building a house requires a dream and also skill and information. Consultations with trustworthy people are critical for
commitment. Over the decades of my career as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, the most frequent questions I am asked about long-term committed relationships are some form of “what do I do when.” The next part of the question varies with some sort of hardship, disappointment or resentment. The specific mechanics involved vary but my usual response is to ask about vows, or otherwise about how CONTINUED ON PAGE 84

they understand the foundation of their marriage. I listen closely for both the enchantment that drew them together and for how they understand and commit to a continual process of growth and change. Healthy marriages not only allow space for change but actively protect and adjust that space. Healthy marriages also honor and embrace shared needs and dreams as well as conflict as paths for adjustments. Home is a place for enjoyment and rest, for recuperation and repair and for growth and change. Therefore, when I seek to offer a useful response to questions about how to handle problems in marriage, I usually suggest remembering the original structure of the relationship home and the tools for making changes to it. Turning again to these gifts of home offers the opportunities and paths for handling both common and extraordinary stress placed on the relationship. At the end of a recent yoga practice, I was moved when the instructor told
us to “Allow yourself to come home to the center of the ease of your own wild body.” As a systemic psychotherapist, I reflected more through the day about this physical home – my body - where I live, as well as the many other places where we “live,” including how life-giving it is to be able to come to the center of our primary relationship for what we need. Just as more relaxation is often found at the end of an energizing, even strenuous, time of yoga, the nourishing benefits of the relationship can be deepened and expanded when the partners engage in thoughtful work together, including when that work involves conflict. For the couple planning to marry, I encourage taking stock of not only their enchantment but also their tools and readiness for change. I encourage the betrothed to outline their foundation and their commitment to the process of conflict and change in many forms. I encourage them to include space to seek and add what they don’t yet know. I wish them a relationship home that will nourish them individually and together,

FROM OUR BRIDES
“Don’t sweat the details on the big day, prepare yourself for small things to go wrong but don’t forget to have fun with your loved ones, dance, and enjoy your big day.”
Rebekah: “Focusing on the reason you’re doing this–you’re marrying a wonderful person and everyone there is coming to celebrate with you.”
Caitlyn:
“Try to keep your priorities clear the whole time. You spend so much time planning and stressing but at the end of the day you’re there to celebrate your love with the people you love most”
Kelsey:
“Don’t be afraid of booking with small-town vendors… They were all very knowledgeable, kind, and incredibly affordable.”
Carly:
“Relax and enjoy the planning process. It can be overwhelming and exhausting, but when I let go of expectations and the need for everything to be “perfect” - I started having so much fun and felt even more connected to my partner.”
Sarah:
“You do you, girl! Toast with pink champagne, forgo a wedding cake, get fake flowers! Don’t rush into anything, take the time to consider what you actually want.”
Margaret: “For us - two busy professionals in our late 30s with 4 kids, living 3 hours away from the venue
- having a planner like Bethany who can do so much of the background work for us was essential and well worth the added expense.”
Savanna: “My biggest tip would be to really focus (and spend money on) the elements that are MOST important to you both. “
Cat:
“Plan the wedding of YOUR dreams and avoid falling into the trenches giving everyone around you what they want; getting opinions from loved ones can be helpful in some scenarios, but too many opinions can weigh heavy on you.”
Sadler:
“Try to soak in those few months afterward with your new person.”
Ashlyn:
“RELAX and savor the moments you have while planning.”
