Wedding Planners
Walking With You Each Step Of The Way
BY BAILEY LITTLE
Katie Mercer, Wedding Sales Manager at Chetola Resort and Conference Center in Blowing Rock, has been in the industry for about three years. Prior to her current position, she worked for a planning company that traveled to a different venue every weekend. As a result, she has experienced how wedding venues across the High Country work to accommodate celebrations of all kinds.
As a student at Appalachian State
University, she majored in Hospitality in Tourism with plans to go into the hotel industry. In her Sophomore year of college, she started working at Blowing Rock Country Club as a server and part of the event staff.
“I got to set up the weddings and that was just my favorite part of the whole job,” Katie said.
She later became an intern at a wedding planning company.
“I just fell in love with it at that point, so I kind of just knew that was what I wanted to do,” Katie said.
She started her position at Chetola in March 2024 and shared that she loves connecting with couples before they get married.
“This job is really cool because I get to book the couple here and then I get to walk with them the whole way,” Katie said. “You get to know a lot about them, about how they met, about where they are from, and so it is just really cool to have that connection.”
Q: If I were to be planning a wedding and I was trying
to choose a wedding planner to help me through the entire process, what are some key pieces of information I would need to communicate to potential wedding planners?
A: I always ask people if they are planning on doing a destination
wedding and whether or not their guests would be traveling and require lodging. When you are looking at a wedding venue, it is really important for you to click with the person who is in my position since you will be working together closely. There is also the aspect of whether or not you would like an indoor or outdoor
wedding and what the aesthetic you are looking for is. Catering is also an important aspect. Would you want it to be an outside caterer or would you like it to be something the venue can take care of?
Q: As a wedding planner, what are the first steps that are taken to connect you with couples interested in having a wedding at your venue?
A: We have a couple of different platforms that we are on. Interested parties can submit an inquiry form through the website or “Here Comes the Guide”, “Wedding Wire” and “The Knot”. This will go directly to my email, I respond to the inquiries and then I send them an introductory email with my information, our wedding guide which includes pricing information and the venue spaces. If they are interested at that point, we will either do a phone call or they will come in for a tour to see the spaces.
Q: What are the top things you would like people to look for in a venue?
A: Really know your budget and how that is set. Whether or not you want an indoor or outdoor wedding. Whether guests will be traveling or if you have a need for transportation.
Q: What advice do you have for couples who are choosing a wedding venue?
A: When you find a venue it will feel like a good fit. I see that all the time where I will give a tour to someone and you immediately see their face light up because they just feel like it is the right space for them and they know that.
Q: What is your process as far as helping couples decide whether or not the venue is the right fit for them?
A: I always start tours in the lobby and then we do a walkthrough down by the lake so they can walk through CONTINUED ON PAGE 12
all of the spaces and see what they look like. I explain to them how they are typically set up, but all of the different ways that we can set them up. So that is really cool for people to be able to see that and if it is the right space a lot of times they will be able to visualize themselves standing there.
Q: What are some typical questions you are asked by those who are deciding on a venue?
A: A lot of the questions that I get are about “How many people can be here?” and “What time do you think everything should be?” A majority of the questions that I do get are about the timeline, I get a lot of questions about the food (buffet vs plated dinner) and the same with appetizers during cocktail hour, you can have those passed around or they can be at a station. I also get a lot of “What have you seen before?” questions and it is fun to say “Well I have seen a lot, but these are the ones that we typically see and this is how it typically works out.”
Q: How do you use your experience in the industry to help give recommendations and guidance to couples planning a wedding?
A: It is fun to be able to give people recommendations for that kind of stuff. Most of that comes in when we are doing the tasting and the planning meeting and I will give them little recommendations of things that I have seen that are cute. Or they will ask if certain things will work and I’m able to tell them “Yes” or “No” and “This is how I would do that”.
Q: What is your favorite part about your job?
A: I love all of it. But my favorite part is the wedding day. I really enjoy the fast-paced environment of it and it is also just really special to sit back and watch the couple be in love and watch them be celebrated by their friends and family. It is exciting to have a part in that. ***
Wedding planners play an important role in helping couples get from start to finish on creating their special day. Regardless of who you choose, they will be excited to do as much as they can to help take some of the stress off your plate and ensure your special day goes as smoothly as possible. Take the leap and submit an inquiry or request to connect with a wedding planner and you will surely have someone to cheer you on and help you each step of the way.
Engagement Ring
BY KAYLA LASURE
FOR YOU Choosing The Right
While the engagement ring and other fine jewelry business seems to be all about the bling, for Charlie Travis it’s about making relationships with those purchasing a ring.
“We get to share in the excitement and being a part of that satisfaction is really what drives us and keeps us coming back to work,” Charlie says. “We get to see people at their happiest moments.”
Charlie has been in the fine jewelry business for 40 years, having opened Village Jewelers in 1979. His first real job was with an antique auction gallery in Blowing Rock where he learned about and fell in love with fine jewelry.
In the last 10 years, Charlie has seen a trend in what is popular when purchasing an engagement ring with the rise of the internet. The majority of the customers at Village Jewelers these days want custom engagement rings “because of the ease of looking at hundreds or thousands of different designs and tuning into the things that make you happy and that you can get excited about,” he says.
magazine. Jewelers would just set out their fine jewelry products in their showcase and that’s what customers would buy.
“In today’s world, the consumer has so many more options,” Charlie says. Charlie also mentioned changes with the introduction of lab-grown diamonds versus natural diamonds. He said lab-grown diamonds are the same material as a natural diamond, they aren’t a simulant. They’re a 10 on the hardness scale and are cut and graded the same way as
Back in the day, he says that people really didn’t have that option unless they went to a library or found a bridal
a natural diamond. Nearly all of the customers at Village Jeweler want a diamond for their engagement ring — it’s a split of about half and half of those who want a naturally grown versus lab-grown diamond.
According to Charlie, Village Jewelers could procure an engagement ring with a 3-carat cut with excellent color and a flawless diamond for $3,000. If it were a natural diamond in the same grade, he says the cost might be $50,000.
“The advent of lab-grown diamonds has changed the market such that it’s driven the price of natural diamonds down to the lowest level I’ve seen in 20 years,” Charlie says. “Nowadays, people with a modest budget can
afford a large diamond grown in a lab.”
So What Should I Consider When Buying a Ring?
When considering what kind of ring to purchase, customers are recommended to consider the four C’s — cut, color, clarity and carat. Other factors to consider are metal type, what kind of stone is preferred, the ring setting — like a halo or a soliare — and different styles.
The current trend is simple designs where the main focus is on the center stone, according to Charlie. For the shape, he most often sees circular stones followed by ovals followed by a cushion shape. He says when it comes to the size of the ring, he likes asking his customers if they’d be comfortable wearing a ring if they choose a bigger size. Typically, most folks at Village Jewelers choose a diamond in the one to two carat range.
Charlie said he finds it to be important for the person who is wearing the ring to visit a jeweler to try on different types of rings to figure out what they do and don’t like.
“Occasionally, we have folks who come in with a picture on their phone and say ‘I’m looking for a ring like this.’ We have that ring in the showcase and they put it on their finger and say, ‘Oh, I don’t like this.’ It’s very important to physically touch, feel and see the beauty of that jewelry and be able to try it on. To look at it in the picture you can get an idea of what you think you like, but until you actually put it on your finger, you won’t know.”
When it comes to custom rings,
Charlie says they can easily use a computer to draw out and make changes to a design and that choosing to go the custom route often costs relatively close to that of a ring from the showcase. He also mentioned a client he had met with over the course of six to eight weeks as they worked on the customer’s soon-to-be fiancés engagement ring to ensure complete satisfaction.
“When looking for an engagement ring, they should look for (a jeweler) who is enthusiastic that they can build a relationship with,” Charlie says. “ I like to have a relationship with my clients. It isn’t a short-term thing; it isn’t to make a sale. It’s to make sure we’re on the right track with their needs.”
What About Engagement Ring Maintenance?
The greatest cause of wear on an engagement ring are things like dirt and body oils, Charlie says. To maintain the integrity of the jewelry, he said it’s a good rule of thumb to have a jeweler check the engagement ring for wear and damage every six months.
Charlie recalled recently working with a client who brought in a ring bought from a different jeweler that had a marquise-shaped center stone that was too large for the setting. The stone would repeatedly become loose. Village Jewelers suggested buying a smaller center stone for the mounting to reduce the chance of it becoming loose again.
It isn’t uncommon for big box stores to sell customers a maintenance policy for their jeweler, according to
Charlie. He says that Village Jeweler offers a free cleaning and check of an engagement ring whether you buy the ring from them or not. He said folks can bring in their rings and they can check for issues such as loose prongs that could lead to an unsecure stone or other issues with the mounting.
He also says that customers can clean their jewelry at home by using lukewarm water, soap and a soft bristle toothbrush to scrub the jewelry a little bit. Once the soap has been rinsed off, the jewelry can be left on a towel to dry.
As far as storage and taking care of the ring long term, Charlie says to never store all of the jewelry pieces in one pouch or box together. As diamonds are a hard material if a diamond ring is kept in the same container as other pieces of jewelry, the diamond can scratch and damage the other jewelry pieces. If traveling with jewelry and all of the pieces are kept in the same container, Charlie recommends keeping each item in a separate plastic resealable bag to reduce the chance of jewelry abrasions.
Lastly, Charlie is a big proponent of insuring the engagement ring.
“I know folks who have jewelry that’s worth more than a car. Would you not insure your car? I think we should always insure the jewelry,” Charlie says.

your personal style. While there are countless trends to follow, the best bridal makeup reflects your unique personality and enhances your natural beauty, ensuring you feel like yourself while still looking your most radiant. Whether you’re minimalist and love fresh-faced beauty, or you’re bold and love a statement lip, there are many ways to infuse your personal style into your wedding makeup.
Here are several tips to help you create a bridal look that’s both timeless and true to you.
Start with Your Skin
Your wedding makeup will last for hours, so focusing on skin preparation is essential. It’s important to maintain a skincare routine that suits your skin type in the months leading up to the big day. Whether you have oily, dry, or combination skin, start by using products that align with your typical routine. If you prefer a dewy finish, opt for hydrating primers and foundations that give your skin a glowing, fresh appearance. If you love a matte finish, choose oil-free products that help control shine and set the makeup for longer wear.
For a personalized touch, consider incorporating a makeup artist who understands your skin tone and texture. They can mix foundation shades to match your complexion

perfectly, ensuring a natural look that feels just right. Adding a bit of highlighter or bronzer can also reflect your personality—whether you love a sun-kissed glow or prefer a subtle, sculpted finish.
Choose a Look that Reflects Your Everyday Style
When planning your bridal makeup, think about how you wear your makeup on a daily basis. If you’re someone who enjoys minimal makeup with a “no-makeup” look, you can enhance your natural features with light, fresh makeup that feels effortless. Soft neutral eyeshadows, a coat of mascara, and a natural lip gloss are all you need to feel comfortable and look radiant.
On the other hand, if you’re someone who loves dramatic eyeshadow, bold brows, or a statement lip, why not make that your wedding makeup signature? Don’t feel pressured to tone it down just because it’s your wedding day. Instead of opting for traditional soft bridal looks, you could go for a sultry smoky eye or a vibrant red lip that expresses your individuality. This is your moment to shine, so make it reflective of your style!
Consider Your Dress and Wedding Theme
Your wedding dress and overall theme will play a significant role in shaping your makeup. If you’re going for a traditional look with a
classic white dress, you might choose soft, romantic makeup to complement the timeless nature of the gown. On the other hand, a modern wedding dress with sleek lines or a color element might call for a bolder makeup choice.
If your wedding theme includes boho elements, you could incorporate earthy tones into your makeup—think warm browns, terracotta, or golds for the eyes, with a peach or nude lip. For a vintage-inspired wedding, you might choose a bold cat-eye and a red lip, channeling the glamour of old Hollywood. Incorporating your wedding’s aesthetic into your makeup ensures cohesion while staying true to your personal style.
Embrace
Your Signature Features
Do you have a feature that you love to emphasize? Whether it’s your lips, eyes, or freckles, use your wedding makeup to enhance these features. If you have full lips that you love, don’t shy away from a bold lip color. Opt for a signature lipstick that makes you feel confident, whether it’s a rich berry, classic red, or even a nude shade that complements your natural tone.
If your eyes are your standout feature, consider adding extra definition with eyeliner or experimenting with different eyeshadow shades that make your eyes pop. And if you adore your freckles, opt for a light coverage foundation or a tinted moisturizer to let them shine
through, instead of concealing them entirely.
Personalize Your Makeup with a Special Touch
Make your wedding makeup even more personal by incorporating unique elements that have special meaning to you. Whether it’s a favorite flower, a family heirloom, or a product with sentimental value, small details can elevate your look and add a layer of significance.
For instance, if you love a particular scent, you might incorporate it into your wedding-day makeup with a fragrance-infused body lotion or setting spray. Or if you’re wearing a special piece of jewelry or hair accessory, you can tailor your makeup to match the look. A subtle, matching lip color to the gemstone in your engagement ring can tie your makeup seamlessly into your entire wedding look.
Work with a Makeup Artist Who Understands Your Vision
While you might have a clear idea of what you want for your wedding makeup, it’s essential to collaborate
with a skilled makeup artist who understands and appreciates your personal style. A great artist will be able to translate your vision into a look that works for you on your wedding
day. It’s important to communicate openly about your preferences— whether you want a natural finish or something more glam—and allow them to guide you based on your face shape, skin type, and the overall aesthetic of your wedding.
If possible, schedule a trial run so you can test the makeup and make any adjustments. This trial is the perfect time to experiment with different looks, products, and techniques to ensure your makeup feels like you. It’s also an opportunity to discuss any adjustments based on how long you’ll be wearing the makeup or any concerns you might have.
Trust Your Instincts
At the end of the day, your wedding makeup should feel like an extension of yourself. It’s important to trust your instincts and choose a look that makes you feel confident,
beautiful, and comfortable. If you love a certain style or makeup trend, go for it. Your wedding is one of the most personal days of your life, and your makeup should reflect who you are, not just follow trends or external expectations.
Conclusion
Incorporating your personal style into your wedding makeup ensures that your look is authentic and makes you feel your best. Whether you choose natural beauty, bold glam, or something in between, the key is to stay true to what makes you feel like yourself. By thinking about your everyday style, your dress, your signature features, and working with a professional makeup artist, you can achieve a wedding makeup look that’s uniquely yours, ensuring you look flawless and radiant as you walk down the aisle.
Bridal Hair 101
Find a Style to Make You Smile
Weddings are one of the most memorable occasions in a person’s life, and every bride wants to look and feel her best on her special day. From the dress to the makeup, every detail counts — and, of course, the hairstyle plays a major role in completing the bridal look. Wedding hairstyles evolve over time, with trends influenced by fashion, celebrity weddings, and evolving beauty standards. As we move into 2025, some key trends are dominating the wedding hairstyle scene. Here are
the top wedding hairstyle trends that are expected to make waves this year.
Natural and Effortless Waves
In 2025, the trend is moving away from ultra-styled, perfectly polished
looks and towards a more natural, relaxed vibe. Effortless, beachy waves continue to be popular, offering brides a look that feels fresh, yet refined. These soft waves can be created with a curling iron or styling tools that add
volume and texture, but the key is to avoid a rigid, overly structured appearance. This hairstyle works especially well for brides who are looking for a bohemian or modern aesthetic.
For brides with longer hair, beachy waves offer a chic, yet casual option, while still looking sophisticated. Pairing these waves with a floral crown, loose veil, or even a chic hairpin can help to elevate the look, while keeping it grounded in a natural, down-to-earth vibe. For brides who want to add extra volume or movement, gentle layers can be incorporated to create a fuller look.
Sleek Low Buns
A sleek, low bun continues to be a top choice for brides who want a more formal yet elegant look. This minimalist hairstyle is sophisticated and timeless. The beauty of the sleek low bun lies in its versatility — it can be tailored to suit a variety of wedding themes, from classic to contemporary. Some brides may choose a slickedback style, ensuring every hair is in place, while others may opt for a softer, slightly looser bun for a more romantic effect.
Adding accessories like pearl hairpins, small flowers, or a simple veil can bring the style together beautifully. The low bun is ideal for keeping the hair out of the face and

works well with most types of dresses, particularly those with intricate necklines or detailing. It’s also a great option for brides who prefer a low-maintenance yet polished hairstyle.
Textured Braids
Braids continue to be a favorite for brides in 2025, with many opting for intricate, textured braids as part of their wedding hairstyle. These braids can range from simple and understated to complex and detailed. The trend is moving toward loose, boho-inspired braids that have a lived-in, relaxed feel. A side braid or fishtail braid can be especially eye-catching, as it adds texture and movement to the hair while still keeping it in place throughout the day.
Textured braids can be paired with a veil for a romantic, whimsical look, or they can be left alone for a more contemporary and edgy vibe. Many brides are also opting for multiple braids combined into one style, such as a braided crown or a waterfall braid. For added volume, soft waves or curls can be woven into the braid, giving it a fuller, more dramatic appearance.
Half-Up, Half-Down Styles
The half-up, half-down style is making a major comeback in 2025. This classic look offers the best of both worlds by combining the elegance of an updo with the softness of loose hair. The half-up style allows for flexibility in terms of the types of curls or waves used, making it a versatile choice for different hair textures and lengths.
One of the reasons this style is so popular is its ability to complement almost any bridal gown, from minimalist designs to those with heavy embellishments. The half-up style can be customized with accessories, such as decorative combs or floral accents. For a more glamorous touch, some brides are choosing to add volume to the crown and then letting the hair cascade into soft waves or curls. This style strikes a perfect balance between elegance and romance.
Vintage Glamour
Vintage-inspired wedding hairstyles are seeing a resurgence in popularity. Classic styles from the 1920s, ‘40s, and ‘50s are making a big comeback, especially for brides who want to channel old Hollywood glam. Think finger waves, pin curls, and soft vintage updos. These styles offer a refined, polished look with a nod to history. A vintage-style updo can be paired with a birdcage veil or a dramatic comb for a truly retro feel.
The key to this trend is the use of accessories — vintageinspired jewelry, lace veils, or even pearls can elevate the look and make it feel truly timeless. For brides who want to add a modern twist to a vintage style, some opt for more subtle touches, such as adding a delicate braid or leaving a few loose strands to frame the face.
Messy Top Knots
The messy top knot continues to be a popular choice for brides looking for a laid-back, fun vibe on their wedding day. This style has evolved from its casual streetstyle origins to become a more polished, bridal-friendly option. The messy top knot offers a perfect balance between relaxed and sophisticated, making it suitable for both informal weddings and more formal ceremonies.
A messy top knot works especially well for brides with shorter hair or those who want to add height and volume to their look. Adding a soft veil or hair accessories such as crystal pins or small flowers can enhance the overall aesthetic. While it might appear carefree, the messy top knot still offers a degree of structure, ensuring that the style stays intact throughout the day.
Romantic Low Ponytails
The low ponytail is another classic hairstyle making waves in 2025, but with a romantic twist. Brides are opting for soft, voluminous ponytails that are styled loosely to create a dreamy and whimsical look. The ponytail is often complemented with curls or waves, adding a soft texture that enhances its romantic feel. Some brides choose to wrap a small section of hair around the base of the ponytail to create a more polished finish, while others leave it slightly undone for a more relaxed approach.
For a bit of sparkle, a low ponytail can be adorned with a delicate hairpin, or a vintage-inspired clip can be used to add an element
of glamour. This hairstyle works beautifully with a variety of wedding gowns, especially those with a more relaxed or modern style.
Conclusion
In 2025, wedding hairstyles are embracing a blend of timeless elegance, natural beauty, and effortless style. Whether a bride prefers the sleek sophistication of a low bun, the relaxed charm of beachy waves, or the romanticism
of braids, there is a wedding hairstyle for every type of bride. From bohemian braids to glamorous vintage waves, the possibilities are endless. The most important thing is for each bride to feel like herself on her wedding day, and these trends offer a variety of ways to achieve that perfect bridal look. With the right style, accessories, and confidence, any bride can walk down the aisle looking and feeling her best.
Preserving History and the Environment
Lovill House Inn
BY ABBY BUCKNER
While weddings are joyous celebrations brimming with love and excitement, they can also leave behind a hefty carbon footprint. From the food waste often generated by receptions to the energy used to power the big day, the environmental impact of weddings is hard to ignore.
Located in Boone at 404 Old Bristol Road, the Lovill House Inn is redefining wedding planning by offering thoughtful and sustainable options for couples looking to celebrate their special day with special care for the environment.
Built in 1875, the historic Lovill House is where Appalachian State University’s charter was signed and served as the home of the Lovill family for a century before being transformed into a charming bed and breakfast 30 years ago.
In 2021, under the stewardship of current owners Joel and Tonje Olsen, the property was carefully renovated to embrace sustainability and renewable energy. The Lovill House Inn now operates entirely on solar power, blending history with modern ecoconscious practices.
Alison Dees, the general manager of the Lovill House Inn, said the owners wanted to preserve the history of the property for the community.
“It’s really a showcase for not only sustainable energy but also for other forms of sustainability,” Dees said. “It shows that a community does not have to get rid of its history in order to be able to come into the century for sustainability.”
The Lovill House Inn is located within walking distance of downtown Boone and offers 11 acres of hiking
trails and gardens complete with a picturesque waterfall and multiple spots for outdoor or indoor weddings.
Dees added that the inn is a “one-stop shop” with a convenient location that allows guests to walk to town easily for nightlife or dinner without having to get in a car and worry about transportation.
Featuring six main house guest suites and one cabin, there are a variety of rooms and accommodations for wedding guests. The Lovill Cabin includes two bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen, making it the perfect cozy spot
for the happy couple to stay.
The property includes a restored historic barn offering a unique and versatile space for ceremonies. Its upper level provides an enchanting setting for dining and live music, seamlessly combining rustic charm with modern functionality.
The Inn has received the Sustainable Tourism Award from Explore Boone and the highest rating by the NC Green Travel Association. The Lovill House Inn’s dedication to eco-friendly practices is steadfast, with the staff and owners working together with the community to provide sustainable hospitality to guests.
“Our sustainability efforts are constantly growing as we find new ways to ease our carbon footprint,” Dees said.
Dees said the inn has a no-plastic policy, opting instead to use real plates, silverware and water goblets while encouraging weddings to keep any single-use products to a minimum.
“The wedding industry can be really wasteful,” Dees said.
She explained that educating wedding parties on sustainable practices is a huge component of organizing and hosting events at the Lovill House Inn and an environmentally conscious perspective she has grown to love sharing with clients.
“People embrace sustainability practices and get excited about them,” Dees said.
The Lovill House Inn’s kitchen is committed to prioritizing partnerships with local farmers and businesses to source fresh, organically grown produce whenever possible. Guests can start their day with an organic breakfast that highlights some of Boone’s local offerings, including rich, aromatic Local Lion coffee and farm-fresh Aunt Bessie’s Eggs.
“From the ground up we are sustainably minded, from everything we purchase to all of our practices are done mindfully with sustainability at the forefront,” Dees said.
The Inn partners with Fillaree,
a North Carolina-based company that supplies handmade soap, body wash, shampoo and conditioner — all delivered through a zero-waste system using refillable bags.
The commitment to eco-conscious practices permeates every aspect of the inn and its grounds, from the advanced heating and air conditioning systems to the strategic implementation of energy-efficient solutions, ensuring both comfort and sustainability for guests.
Kate Biggerstaff, the resident gardener at the Lovill House Inn, has replanted and transformed the property into a vibrant display of native landscaping, thoughtfully designed to support pollinators. From spring through fall, the grounds thrive with an array of native flowers, providing a backdrop that evolves with the seasons.
“No matter where anybody gets married, thinking about the carbon footprint of a wedding is great,” Dees said. “You’re starting with this clean slate, and making the world a better place.”
With its picturesque setting, rich history, and commitment to the environment, the Lovill House Inn offers couples a wedding venue where timeless romance meets modern responsibility—a place where love truly leaves a lasting impression, not a footprint.

Kimberly and Addison cherished the opportunity to marry one another surrounded by their loved ones, many of whom traveled far to celebrate their special day.
The day came with an unexpected twist. Their original venue was impacted by hurricane damage, but fate led them to Sky Retreat, which they had initially loved but considered out of their budget. When Sky Retreat became available and offered a discount, it felt like everything aligned perfectly.
The wedding day was magical from start to finish. The couple began by walking into the reception area to see their vision brought to life. Highlights included a fun first look, a heartfelt
ceremony officiated by their friend Freddie, and unique touches like beer burrow donkeys during cocktail hour and adorable goats from V and B Experience stealing the show.
After saying their vows and enjoying family and wedding party photos, the couple danced to “Wondering Why” by The Red Clay Strays for their first dance. Guests enjoyed delicious food from Moondance Catering, heartfelt toasts, and a gorgeous sunset photo session. The entire day exceeded their dreams, leaving them with memories to cherish forever.

ABOUT THE WEDDING
Appalachian culture is deeply ingrained in the lives of Brittany and Trevor, and their wedding day was no different. With the sound of fiddles, banjos, standing bass and dancing feet, the couple wed alongside these historic mountains and their loved ones.
THEIR STORY
BRIDE: Community Health Coordinator @ Western Youth Network
GROOM: Director of the Center for Appalachian Studies @ Appalachian State University
HOW THEY MET
“We met in July of 2022. At the time, I managed the Old Orchard Creek General Store in Lansing, North Carolina. A part of my job was to book music and help organize our Author series that we host in partnership with the Ashe County Library. Trevor is a musician and author, and was recommended to us by a mutual friend (one of my dearest friends) so we added him to the series that year. He was scheduled to come to the store in July to read from his book, Otto Wood the Bandit and play a few old-time tunes. Trevor shows up and does a wonderful job, My bosses even decided to book him for one of their dinner parties that following week at their lovely blueberry
farm, known as Old Orchard Creek Farm. Suspiciously, they insisted I come to the party to help set-up sound for Trevor and his bandmate. Trevor and I chatted in between sets at the dinner party and, by the end, decided to meet up for a drink later on in the week. We’ve been inseparable since. We got married at the same farm in 2024.”

HIGHLIGHT
“The day was magical! It was nice having a non-traditional wedding so we could have more time to visit with friends before and after the ceremony. We sent out suggestions of silly descriptions for wedding vibes:
• Appalachian summer chic
• Wannabe cowboy cocktail
• Summer time fairy party
• Uptown train conductor
• Square dancing opossum queen
• Bibs and ballgowns
• Greek goddess gone country …and, boy, did our friends show up. The vibes were right, weather was perfect, food was amazing, everyone was dancing and having a grand ole time. Having a square dance was one of the best parts. Communal dancing is not only fun but helps get everyone involved and moving. After traditional music, we turned the funky Foscoe Four loose and we boogied into the night with our friends.
Walking down the aisle (or through the orchard, in this case) was one of the most vulnerable and beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced. We didn’t have a bridal party, it was just the two of us, Trevor and I, walking down a path and across a small stream into the orchard. We were surrounded by all the people who showed up to support our choice, our love. Not only was I emotional from being loved by Trevor and getting to love him, but by also being loved and supported from our community.”

“My favorite part of our wedding was looking into my husband’s eyes the entire ceremony…and really just melting there with no regard for anything else around us. I also thoroughly enjoyed the open-mic speech time we offered before our reception. Hearing our loved ones speak about us individually and as a unit was special beyond words.”
A WEEKEND-LONG EVENT
“So, we did a three-day shindig, starting on the Summer Solstice with an intimate ceremony with just our families and a casual potluck together following. Friday evening (not photographed by Aja), we hosted a pizza and bouquet-making party with close friends and family. Saturday, we began the day at noon with games on the lawn with a grazing board. We had a slight intermission for folks to spiff up (and so we could milk our cow) and then gathered together in the Orion Chapel for open-mic speeches. Our reception took place at the Orion Schoolhouse and we had our dances outside on the patio, followed by dinner and more dancing, photos at golden hour, and an exit with a bubble gun and kazoos. A true summer soiree dream come true!”

After that, we fled to the reception site with our getaway driver (Darbey)! We all had so much fun talking and laughing in the car - all the way to downtown. It was such a happy moment. ABOUT THE WEDDING
Amidst the beautiful Appalachian Mountains, an intimate wedding unfolded with earthy charm. Love bloomed like wildflowers as Lauren and Jesse started the rest of their lives as husband and wife.
THEIR STORY
GROOM: Jesse Presnell, Analytics Engineering Lead
BRIDE: Lauren Presnell, Healthcare Systems Applications Analyst
HOW THEY MET
“A few weeks before COVID hit in February 2019, I was so done with dating apps. I hadn’t logged in for months, but I decided to check one last time before deleting everything. That’s when I saw a message from Jesse. We decided to meet for a date, and I had no idea it would change my entire life.
Our first date almost didn’t happen because I accidentally went to the Boxcar Arcade in Durham instead of Raleigh! Jesse was so kind and offered to reschedule, but my hair looked too
good to waste. I told him, ‘I’ll be there in 30!’ And the rest is history.”
VENDORS

Reception Music: Curated playlist by Jesse and Lauren.
Attire: Jesse purchased his outfit and custom suspenders on Etsy. Lauren’s reception dress was from Etsy; her sister styled her hair, and she did her own makeup.
Food: Dinner catered by Carolina Pizza Company in Boone (local ingredients); appetizers made by Lauren’s family; bouquet crafted by Jesse’s uncle with flowers purchased at Lowe’s Foods.
Special Touches: Officiant was
Jesse’s stepfather. Lauren’s mom made the cheesecake, with other desserts from Publix. Jesse gifted Lauren a locket with photos of her late grandparents, which she wore throughout the day.
HIGHLIGHT
“Our ‘first look’ was in a stunning garden cultivated by Jesse’s former boss. His expression when he saw me was unforgettable—pure joy and admiration. It was an emotional moment, and I couldn’t believe I was about to marry him.
Walking down the aisle was equally special. I thought the first look would make it less emotional, but it didn’t.
Seeing my dad tear up and Jesse crying at the end of the aisle was everything I had dreamed of. I was so excited to reach him that I started walking too fast, even kicking up the aisle rug—something we laugh about now when we see the pictures!”

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE DAY
“We started the day with a bit of excitement—I found Taya’s ring in the car after misplacing it the day before. After that ordeal, we headed to the venue for hair and makeup with our bridal party.
The ceremony began at 4 PM, officiated by a close friend, where we exchanged personally written vows. At the end of the ceremony, we included a
meaningful tea ceremony.
Our wedding planner has a tradition of giving the newlyweds 10 minutes alone to soak in the moment, which was truly special. We then took formal family portraits before heading to the reception.
The reception included first dances— Taya had a mother-daughter dance, and I danced with my father. Dinner followed, and we snuck away for couples’ portraits before returning for cake and speeches.
My goddaughters (ages 7 and 11) gave the sweetest speeches.
As the evening wound down, we celebrated with a small after-party surrounded by close friends. My favorite part of the day was the speeches, while Taya’s favorite part was the ceremony.”

“Me and my bridemaids, motherin-law, sisters-in-law, and mom and grandma got to the venue early to do hair and makeup while my husband and his groomsmen, and family got ready at a nearby Airbnb. We did a first look with my dad and some pictures before the ceremony! Our college pastor officiated the wedding and both of our dads prayed
over us at the beginning of the ceremony. We also had a friend lead everyone in some worship songs. After the ceremony we took more pictures outside which was very fun, the venue is so beautiful and it has a pond and gazebo. After pictures we had our reception inside the venue as well. My favorite part of our wedding was the relaxed atmosphere. We wanted it to feel more like a gathering with friends, and it felt a lot like that. It was also a beautiful day with no rain! We had originally wanted to get eloped outdoors so this was perfect. Sam’s favorite memory was right after the ceremony when we signed the marriage license documention on a table in a corner that we found with our pastor and my best friend/maid of honor as well as his best friend (my oldest brother). Having just gone through the whole ceremony, it allowed him to take on the moment.”

Flowering Love
Weddings of all kinds are made beautiful and memorable by celebrating love and joining families together. To many, the setting in which this celebration occurs is a reflection of their personalities and stories. One of the most important elements of creating these truly special environments is floral design.
Even for flower lovers, it can be daunting to select what florals will decorate a wedding - and the stress only increases when you start considering a budget! Thankfully, there are experienced floral designers in the High Country who are

passionate about helping couples achieve their desired aesthetics while staying within their budgets.
Fuschia Moss is the well-known and friendly face behind Fuschia Moss Floral Design and King Street Flowers & Gifts. She has been an integral part of weddings and floral design in the area since 2010.
Fushcia has always loved being around flowers and plants. Her journey in the industry began in a plant
nursery and greenhouse during her time as a college student and continued decades later she worked at a resort handling reservations for the property. Her curiosity for the in-house flowers later led to a job opportunity around the time the wedding industry in the area exploded.
In 2010, she branched off on her own and until last year, was an event and floral designer. In May 2024, she opened her brick-and-mortar store King Street Flowers in the heart of downtown Boone.
This new venture has allowed her to still work with flowers while offering her availability for smaller weddings and events.
“If someone wants to order wedding flowers and does not want the full installation, it allows couples with smaller budgets to pick up smaller table pieces and personal flowers,” Fuschia said.
Trend Alert - Bright Colors!
Overall, Fuschia shared that in terms of trends, classic and elegant floral styles stand the test of time. She also shared that in the past year, trends have leaned toward bright colors, while in the past, muted color palettes, like shades of blush and soft colors, were all the rave.
“In general, couples have gone for more of a brighter color mix,” Fuschia said.
For design, Fuschia has seen a big movement toward meadow boxes. These are usually used to line the aisle and can be repurposed from ceremony to reception. Other trends in decor include simple table decor for receptions with single stem bud vases with lots of candles and bigger “wow” pieces such as a ceiling install. It has also been popular to repurpose large full altarpieces that can be moved to sweetheart tables or backdrops for photo booths during receptions.
“Couples take their budget and put it into a few key places, one or two big pieces that have a lot of impact that you repurpose,” Fuschia said.
She added that though sometimes it is not possible to move things around due to logistics, most floral designers want their couples to be able to use their flowers to the maximum potential.
Consider Your Budget
The biggest piece of advice she offers to couples exploring decor and florals for their wedding is simple, stay within your budget.
She will ask her couples to take their allotted budget and put it in the most important place, whether that be the ceremony or reception. They can then ease up on design elements in other places.
She emphasized the importance of trusting floral designers and listening to their advice to get the most out of your budget. Trusting these event professionals will allow couples to sit back and relax when it comes to this area of wedding planning.
In her experience, a lot of brides come in knowing what flowers they love. However, they are often the most expensive flowers. Fuschia’s tip is to use more expensive flowers in just bouquets or the head table. She understands the reality of life and the fact that most people do not have massive budgets to spend on such an event, so she encourages couples to consider what is most important to them in regard to their florals.
“Make sure that when you choose your floral designer that you feel comfortable with them because it is an important event and you want to feel comfortable with who you are working
with and their advice,” Fuschia said. “You can still have an amazing event and a wonderful time and it can still be achievable on a small budget. Just enjoy the ride!”

Proposal Planning
BY BAILEY LITTLE
She was a freshman, he was a junior. A chance meeting at a game night mixer hosted by a college ministry group led to a lifelong partner… but not right away.
Meeting through a game of Catch Phrase, Hayden and Cooper coined themselves the “Dream Team,” quickly hitting it off and chatting through the night. But for a while, their relationship remained platonic and the pair were great friends and dated other people.
They often went on hikes and trips and participated in service projects. About a year later, both single and amid early COVID, something changed. All of their friends went home and they were some of the only people in their social circle still in Boone. They went to breakfast together and expressed their feelings for each other, which were mutual, and everything changed. The pair have been inseparable ever since.
After some time had passed, the couple were deeply in love and considering their future together. Hayden and Cooper had talked about marriage and decided to make a trip to Rutherford County from their
home in Charlotte for Cooper to ask Hayden’s parents for their blessing. To help with his nerves, Hayden sat in on the conversation which she shared was a very special moment for everyone. Not only did her parents give their blessing, but they also talked about their marriage and marriage in general.
When returning to visit Hayden’s parents over the summer for a weekend trip to Lake James, Hayden’s father suggested that they stop by Hidden Hills Venue in Morganton, North Carolina. Though they weren’t yet engaged, the couple were excited to see the venue.
Hayden had shared with her mother that she always wanted to get married with a cross between her and her husband, as her faith is a huge part of her identity and will guide her in marriage. While at the venue, she saw a cross in the foreground of a magical view of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The couple went over to take in the view together when Cooper started to point at the mountain range, at one point asking Hayden, “How far do you think Boone is? Where do you think it is?”
“I turn around to look and try to figure out where Boone is based off our current location and then I turn back around and he’s on his knee and he asked me to marry him,” Hayden shared about the special moment.
Advice to those
Planning to Propose
Cooper shared his advice for men that are planning to “pop the question”. His biggest piece of advice was to ask for help from the people around you. He had Hayden’s parents involved to make sure someone was there to take pictures. He also stressed the importance of planning ahead and considering what could happen.

of the car, it stopped raining.
“We got engaged on July 3, he was actually going to propose to me on July 4 at the lake,” Hayden said. “But as soon as he started planning it he started thinking about all of the things that could happen at the lake like dropping the ring in the water or me being in a bathing suit for the pictures.”
“As soon as Cooper proposed, the sun came out of the clouds and it was a beautiful day,” Hayden said.
Being there with Cooper and her family was also very special. The venue holds extra importance to the couple because it was not only the place where they were engaged but also where they were married.
it as much, I would say be prepared,” Hayden said. “Don’t let anything that goes wrong bog you down.”
All engagements are special and unique to the couple. Regardless of where and when, it is most important that you are in a setting that means something to you and that you are with those that you love. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 59
Copper said the most memorable part was being nervous leading up to him asking Hayden to marry him. He said he was nervous about messing up because he wanted it to be a memorable and perfect experience. He was also scared she might see the ring beforehand and it would spoil the surprise.
Hayden shared that the most memorable part for her was the weather. As they were driving up to the venue, it was raining. But in true High Country fashion, it didn’t stay that way long, and as soon as they stepped out
“If I could give any advice to someone planning to get engaged, even though it is not the bride who plans

Honoring Your Loved Ones on Your Wedding Day
Incorporating your family into your wedding can make your special day even more meaningful. Weddings are not just a union of two people; they’re a merging of families, cultures, and traditions. Finding ways to involve your loved ones can honor those connections and create memories that everyone will cherish. Here are some thoughtful ideas on how to include your family in your wedding planning and celebration.
Honor Family Traditions
One of the simplest ways to incorporate your family is to embrace cultural or familial traditions. Whether it’s a specific ceremony, a song, or even the food served at the reception, honoring these customs can bring a sense of history and significance to your wedding. For instance, you might include a cultural dance, wear a family heirloom as part of your attire, or include a traditional blessing in your ceremony.
Include Family Members in the Wedding Party
Asking siblings, cousins, or close
relatives to be part of your wedding party is a heartfelt way to show their importance in your life. Beyond the traditional roles of bridesmaids and groomsmen, you can create unique roles for children or older relatives, such as flower girl, ring bearer, or ceremony reader. This gesture can make them feel honored and involved in your big day.
Use Family Heirlooms
Incorporating family heirlooms into your wedding can symbolize the continuity of love and commitment across generations. For example, you might wear your grandmother’s jewelry, carry a handkerchief passed down through the family, or use a vintage cake topper from your parents’ wedding. These details not only add sentimental value but also serve as a beautiful tribute to your loved ones.
Personalize Your
Ceremony
Your ceremony is the heart of your wedding day and an ideal time to include family. Invite a relative to officiate if they are ordained or certified. This can make your vows feel more intimate and personal. Alternatively, ask family members to do a reading, play music, or participate in a unity ritual, such as a sand ceremony

or candle lighting. These moments allow your loved ones to share in the significance of your union.
Display Family Photos
Create a visual tribute to your family by showcasing photos of loved ones at your wedding. A memory table with framed pictures of parents, grandparents, or even great-grandparents can celebrate their love stories and remind guests of your family’s legacy. You can also incorporate these images into your wedding decor, such as a gallery wall or slideshow during the reception.
Plan a Family-Style Meal
meaningful roles during the day. Invite them to join in the first look, give a toast, or even perform a dance together. You could also include a parent-child dance to recognize the love and support they’ve provided throughout your life.
Incorporate Family into Your Attire
throughout the day.
Include Children in Creative Ways
If you have younger siblings, nieces, nephews, or your own children, include them in the festivities in a way that suits their age and personality. They could be part of the wedding procession, hand out programs, or distribute flower petals. For older kids, consider having them help with simple tasks like welcoming guests or managing the guestbook.
Acknowledge Absent Loved Ones
For family members who cannot be present, find meaningful ways to honor their memory. This could include saving them a seat at the ceremony, adding their names to the program, or wearing a piece of jewelry that belonged to them. Some couples light a candle in their memory or include a moment of silence during the ceremony.

Dining together is a universal way to foster connection, and serving a family-style meal can create a warm, communal atmosphere. Choose recipes that hold special significance to your family or reflect your shared heritage. You might even include a special dish made by a relative, such as your mother’s famous pie or your grandmother’s homemade cookies, as part of the dessert table.
Give Special Roles to Parents
Beyond walking you down the aisle, your parents can have additional
Find ways to honor your family through your wedding attire. This might involve sewing a piece of fabric from a loved one’s clothing into your dress or suit lining, carrying a charm from a relative’s bracelet on your bouquet, or wearing cufflinks passed down through the generations. These small but meaningful details can make you feel connected to your family
Feature Family Stories
During speeches or toasts, highlight stories that showcase your family’s humor, love, or resilience. Sharing anecdotes about your parents’ or grandparents’ weddings can provide inspiration and a deeper connection between your past and present. You might also include these stories in your wedding program or website.
your wedding adds depth and richness to the occasion, making it a celebration of both your love and the people who have shaped your lives. Whether through traditions, heirlooms, or special roles, these gestures can strengthen your family bonds and create unforgettable memories. “Darbey is a very special human. She’s not only the life of the party but she’s so genuinely kind. We wanted to get to the reception before all the guests so we could greet and thank them individually. So, when Darbey heard that we were planning on Ubering from our ceremony to our reception site, she instantly offered to drive us! This is just one way she went above and beyond for us and we couldn’t be more grateful. Beyond that, she did an absolutely incredible job capturing the atmosphere of our wedding day. It’s been over a year and, whenever we look at our photos, it feels like we’re transported back to that day. She has such an unbelievable gift and we’re so honored to have been able to work with her.” - Gabriella and Elijas

“Victoria was lovely and attentive with a great attention to detail. She was adventurous and able to capture candid moments throughout the day and evening. She also worked with us to photograph at places that were special to us, including a giant 400 year old maple tree at Old Orchard Creek that is, sadly, no longer standing after the hurricane. Victoria did a beautiful job and we have enjoyed re-living the day by looking through her photos.”

AJA WHITE

“Aja was a joy from the beginning before we even booked her. She was open, flexible and as thrilled for our day as we were. Day of, she became a fast friend and there wasn’t a moment we felt uncomfortable being in front of her camera. We laughed, cried, told stories…and she even applied my sticky boobs with no reservation. In addition to shooting the classic wedding photos, she was super into taking shots of us in our home, outside and in the pasture with our dairy cow. Aja has the perfect balance of guiding a desired shot and allowing the moment to create its own beautiful shot. She captured the sweet details, the light hitting just right, the hugs, the tears, the in-betweens, and the pieces of our daily life that we cherish so dearly. Our wedding album brings all of the energy, smells and emotions of our wedding weekend back through every.single.photo.” - Carley & Jason

Although the waterfall is a local hotspot and we had to dodge tourist and swimmers at times, the results were worth it in the end. In fact our photos make it seem like we’re the only ones there! A true testament of Rebecca’s skill. It was such a wonderful day!”Hayden & Cooper
“Rebecca was incredible. She wasn’t just a photographer; she was an anchor and calming presence throughout the day. She noticed every little detail, even things I didn’t realize I needed help with. When my feet hurt, she made sure I got new
