MATCHUP at a GLANCE APPALACHIAN STATE 0-0 (0-0 Sun Belt)

When Appalachian State has the ball:

New Appalachian State head coach Eliah Drinkwitz, who doubles as the Mountaineers’ offensive coordinator, debuts his up-tempo pro-style offense at Kidd Brewer. He has plenty of weapons to work with as quarterback Zac Thomas, running back Darrynton Evans, and receivers Thomas Hennigan and Jalen Virgil all return. Four-year starter left tackle Victor Johnson, center Noah Hannon, guard Ryan Neuzil also return to their positions.

When East Tennessee State has the ball:

East Tennessee State ran a balanced offense last season, but faces an Appalachian State defense that returns seven starters from 2018. The strength of the App State defense lies in its linebackers, where middle linebacker Jordan Fehr and outside linebacker Akeem Davis-Gaither and Noel Cook — all seniors — return. East Tennessee State’s offense is run by Chance Thrasher, a senior transfer from Coastal Carolina.
