WHEN IDAHO HAS THE BALL The Vandals have had their biggest success throwing the ball. Quarterback Matt Linehan, a freshman, completes 58.2 percent of his passes, and has thrown for 2,370 yards and 10 touchdowns. But Linehan also has tossed 10 interceptions. His favorite receiver is Joshua McCain, who has caught 73 passes for 1,123 yards and nine touchdowns. Appalachian State’s defense has taken over the league lead by allowing a Sun Belt low 345.9 yards per game. The 34 touchdowns the Mountaineers have allowed are second to South Alabama’s 31. Idaho averages 140.3 yards per game on the ground. The Vandals’ top runner is Jerrell Brown, who has gained 557 yards and scored four TDs this season.

WHEN APP STATE HAS THE BALL The way the season has evolved, the Mountaineers’ plan is to get the ball to Marcus Cox and then give him some running lanes. Cox is second in the Sun Belt in rushing with 1,293 yards, which is 117.5 yards per game and 5.6 yards per carry. He leads the league with 17 rushing touchdowns. Cox’s production has pushed Appalachian State’s offense into second in the Sun Belt in total offense (464.4 yards per game) and in rushing (244.9 yards per game). When Appalachian State throws the ball, redshirt freshman Taylor Lamb has thrown for 2,158 yards with 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions.
