n behalf of the Banner Elk Town Council and town staff, I bring you greetings. We treasure our visitors and our citizens alike. Our gift to all is the natural beauty of the area, our climate and our friendly and giving people. It is our job as Council and staff to maintain and preserve that beauty for all to enjoy now and for future generations. We strive to maintain our rich history through the Greater Banner Elk Heritage Society. Stop by our museum and discover when and how the Banners settled in the Elk Valley. Many descendants of the founders still live in Banner Elk. Look into the summer schedule of events for both children and adults. The historic bus tour is very popular, as well as the walking tour of historic homes. Banner Elk is a place where we celebrate the outdoors. You can walk, jog or bike scenic trails. The town park has expanded to accommodate the volume of adults, children and pets in the park daily. We have an outdoor pavilion large enough to accommodate special events. These venues are used year around. Summer brings the ever-popular

Thursday evening free concerts in the park in the Robbins Amphitheater. Children’s Hope Alliance graciously opens their beautiful lake with a sandy beach for all to enjoy. The YMCA provides the life guards, and canoeing, fishing, swimming and picnicking are available. Holsten Camp offers a variety of summer camps to fit all needs. Their facilities are suitable for family gatherings and conferences as well. Summer is also the time when Lees-McRae Summer Theatre brings three fabulous musicals to town. Each season these professional
productions are never a disappointment and are performed to a packed house each night. Lees-McRae College in downtown Banner Elk has a wonderful array of cultural and community amenities for the citizens and guests of the area. The Historic Banner Elk School is in the heart of downtown Banner Elk and is being transformed into a hub of activities. Housed there is the Book Exchange. Citizens and guest can bring a book and take a book for their reading pleasure. The Book Exchange offers a large variety of books, a children’s corner, children’s classes, guest lecturers, book signings and more. Mayland Community College has created an extension campus at this facility, offering classes year round. The Historic Banner Elk School is in the process of adding other tenants, and by the summer there will much more activity. The greenspace in front of the Historic Banner Elk School is busy year round as well. Each summer there are five juried fine arts shows, while in the fall we have the worldfamous Woolly Worm Festival and the Pet Fest, and in December we have the lighting of the huge Christmas tree and Menorah in
the center of the greenspace. Of course, our glorious elk is the centerpiece of town and that area has a beautiful new entrance into the greenspace and the Historic Banner Elk School. Thank you to Mrs. Elaine Wold for donating the elk and for transforming that surrounding area. This is the most popular spot for Banner Elk photos. The Corner at Main has a new look, also thanks to Mrs. Wold. The beautiful greenspace at the traffic light will be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly, multi-use space. This space will change the look and feel of downtown Banner Elk. This will be a greatspace to watch the ever-growing Fourth of July Parade and the Small Town Christmas Parade of Lights. Our neighbors keep Banner Elk hopping. We are between Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain Ski Resorts, and we are in the midst of several fabulous golf and country clubs. Banner Elk offers a variety of wellacclaimed fine restaurants and other soughtafter amenities to keep our guests coming back. You will find many testimonials in our area of people who came to visit, bought a home and stayed. Sincerely, Brenda Lyerly Banner Elk mayor

The school community strives daily to fulfill their mission to provide a safe, secure environment that is essential to learning and prepare all students to become responsible citizens, lifelong learners and to be globally prepared for life in the 21st century. Banner Elk Elementary School opened its doors for the first time in fall 2011. The stateof-the-art facility oers geothermal heating, a full-size gym, spacious classrooms with ample storage and an abundance of natural lighting for each classroom. The new building is a wonderful asset for both the school and the community. BES was the first school to participate in the one-to-one initiative for Avery County Schools and was instrumental in leading the way for a district-wide initia-
tive to provide an iPad for every student in grades kindergarten through fifth and a MacBook Air for students in grades six through 12. In addition to providing quality education for students, the school serves as the Professional Development School for Lees-McRae College and is part of the Appalachian State University Public School Partnership. Many wonderful events and activities occur throughout the year at Banner Elk School. Favorites include an annual Fall Fling supported by a very involved Parent Teacher Organization, an annual Christmas school and community program and a spring parent night that focuses on literacy and on preparing for the end-of-grade assessments. s natives of this region, Debbie and I are grateful to have the opportunity to serve Lees-McRae College and to live in Avery County. From our perspective, there is no more beautiful and soulful place than Banner Elk. At Lees-McRae College, we are dedicated to the intellectual, spiritual and physical growth of our students. The college is committed to providing a quality, values-based education, inspiring and enabling individuals to contribute to a changing society with integrity and civic responsibility. While there are many distinguishing characteristics of Lees-McRae College, none is more important than location. At 3,740 feet above sea level, we are the highest campus in the Eastern United States. With a campus of more than 460 acres, LeesMcRae is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, graced with forests, rivers, lakes and fields near the base of Beech Mountain, with Grandfather Mountain and Sugar Mountain, the Pisgah and Cherokee national forests and the Linville Gorge Wilderness nearby. Our natural ecosystems are among the most diverse in the world and serve as laboratories for study in many disciplines. The beautiful native stone buildings that grace
our campus date back to the early 1900s. We are dedicated to their preservation and adaptive reuse. As a matter of fact, the college recently received the Caraway Award from the state of North Carolina for our preservation efforts. I encourage you to visit the Lees-McRae campus and experience the beauty for yourself. Take a campus tour, meet our dedicated faculty and staff and talk with some of our amazing students who come from all across the globe. Stop by the historic Mill Pond and Cheese House (visitor center) and learn more about our history. Tour the Dianne and Dan May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on the Elk River and see firsthand this unique academic program. Attend some of our highly acclaimed theater productions or stop in our sports complex and experience the excitement of our student-athletes as they compete in 15 different NCAA sports. We are grateful and we are blessed at LeesMcRae College. PHOTO SUBMITTED

As Banner Elk and the surrounding High Country area continues to be enticing to visitors from all across the United States each year, more and more people are seeking to fully immerse themselves in the style of hometown living the town has to offer by purchasing a home in the area. Whether buying to move to the area permanently or looking for a home away from home, the right home for you can be found in this neck of the woods. The median listing price for a home in Banner Elk has hovered around $161,000 for the last three years according to realtor.com, but there are certain times and trends to look for when considering a purchase in the area, says Laurie Phillips, executive officer with High Country Association of Realtors. “Summer is traditionally a strong buying season, with an additional market influx in the fall. With low interest rates and a solid inventory, we are seeing more buyers looking to invest in the High Country,” Phillips said. “Intriguing factors when considering a purchase locally include climate, natural beauty, community involvement, activity and festivals.” According to a multitude of different realtors in the local area, the real estate market for local businesses and homes has been on the rise in the last few years, so there’s no better time to find your home in the High Country. One extra benefit of the Banner Elk area is its unique balance of in-town and hidden away locations. The region’s geography has allowed for any home in the area to be a pristine mountain estate.
“There are many great areas in Banner Elk for a buyer to explore and consider, both in town and rural,” Phillips said. “Whether you’re here for the mountain living and intown atmosphere, or just want to get away from everything and enjoy the quiet living our mountains offer, we have what you’re looking for.” Philips knows all the potential pitfalls and issues that could arise when purchasing a home, and offered tips and insights to the potential problems when it comes to making

Banner Elk before the Banners
Editor’s Note: The following story appears courtesy of Michael C. Hardy. Hardy is the 2010 North Carolina Historian of the Year and the author of 21 books. When not researching the depths of North Carolina’s role in the Civil War, he dabbles with local history. Learn more by clicking to www.michaelchardy.com.
Many of our local communities are named for prominent local families. Most residents and even most visitors know that the name of Banner Elk is tied to the Banner family, but there is a long history of settlement centered around the area that is today Banner Elk, a history that actually predates the Banners themselves and which has other names stamped upon it. The story of how the Banner family came to the region is a well-known piece of local history. Martin L. Banner traveled into these parts from Forsyth County about 1848; he promptly bought property and built a cabin. He soon became bored with his surroundings and sold out to the Dugger family. Banner then moved on to Carter County, Tennessee. Martin eventually returned to area a few years later and settled in the Montezuma community. In 1856, Lewis Banner, a brother to Martin, moved to the area and purchased 200 acres of land on Elk Creek. He brought with him his five sons and three
daughters. They are the ones who gave the name “Banner” to Banner Elk. A post office called Banner’s Elk opened on June 16, 1875. Today, Banner Elk is considered one of the premier vacation sites in western North Carolina. However, there were pioneers in the area prior to the Banners. One of the first was David Hix. About the same time that Samuel Bright was settling down near the present-day site of the Avery County Airport, near Ingalls, David Hix was settling in the Valle Crucis area of Watauga County. His home was surrounded by a palisade wall and was generally known as Hix’s Fort. He was living there with his family, including his two sons, Samuel and David; his two son-in-laws, Thomas and Mikel Asher; two other men named Lucus and Asher, and a hired woman named Ireland, along with her daughter, Jenny. For a brief amount of time, the group moved further down the Watauga River, living near Dugger’s Iron Works in what is present-day Carter County, Tenn. It was here that Jenny was abducted, probably by the Shawnee; she lived for seven years near the Ohio River and married one of their warriors. She was later purchased by some “Indian traders” and was eventually able to return to her mother. Hix lived at Dugger’s Iron Works for maybe a year before returning to Valle Crucis. One source puts him back on the
upper section of the Watauga River about 1776 or 1777. As the American Revolution broke out on the frontier as well as in the more populated sections of the Colonies, Hix’s position became more complicated and difficult. In fact, it is not even very clear where his loyalties actually were. One source considered Hix a Tory, while another considered him to be of a more neutral position. Clearly, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, Patriot leader and legendary foe of Tories in the backcountry, believed Hix was an enemy to the Patriot cause. At one point, Cleveland traveled from Wilkesboro and laid siege to Hix’s Fort. After a few days, Hix believed that Cleveland had retreated, and when the settlers ventured forth, Cleveland ambushed them, killing Hix’s son-in-law. Mikel, and wounding David Hix. Cleveland’s men then plundered Hix’s Fort. At some point, it appears that the Hix family fled their fort in Valle Crucis. The family came to the area near presentday Banner Elk, presumably at some point during the American Revolution. John Preston Arthur, in his history of Watauga County, tells us that Hix eventually “became uneasy and retired to the wilderness near what is now Banner Elk, where he made camp and supported himself by hunting and making maple syrup and sugar, thus avoiding service as an American or a Tory.” Hix did manage to avoid swearing allegiance to either
side during the war. Arthur goes on to tell us that people 100 years ago still plowed up coal “near the Lybrook farm, near the Grandfather Orphanage” and that local people knew the area as the Hix Improvement, “that being the place here Samuel Hix ‘laid out during the Revolutionary War.’” It is possible that David Hix died in the Banner Elk area in 1792 or 1793. His will, drawn up by a resident from Washington County (now Tennessee), was probated in Wilkes County. Arthur adds that there “were no clearings of any extent at Banner Elk, except those at the Hix Improvement, which was very small, and at Big Bottoms but there were two ‘deadenings,’ one called the Moses Deadening and the other the Lark Chopping.” These last two were probably locations where trees had been cut in such a way where their death was certain, thus opening up new ground for cultivation. Arthur also tells us that David Hix soon had neighbors: Baker King and Ben Dugger. There are plenty of Duggers still in the area. Members of the Hix family are also still here in Avery County, but, over time, the name has morphed into the more familiar Hicks. Though there were others seeking to settle in the region well before the 1840, it would be the Banner family whose name would stick to the community.

With the recent uptick in local brewing that is making North Carolina a destination for craft beer enthusiasts, it is little wonder that the mountains are feeling the impact of this thriving new industry. Banner Elk is home to both Banner Elk Winery and Flat Top Brewery, giving beer and wine aficionados two destinations worth paying a visit. Banner Elk Winery is carving out its corner of the viticultural new world with its award-winning wines. The winery strives to assist local vineyards in cultivating French-American and American varieties of grapes. Banner Elk Winery holds tastings yearround from noon until 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, and conducts tours on weekends from May to October. For the beer drinkers, Flat Top Brewing Company, Banner Elk’s own craft brewery, is named for a mountain situated near the center of Avery County. The motto “refreshingly elevated” reflects the mountain location, as well as the brewery’s aim for a high quality beer. Flat Top’s brews are already served in more than a dozen locations in the High Country and beyond. The brewery is open to the public for tasting of the establishment’s eight varieties of beer, which range from pale ales to dark stouts.

The Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival celebrates 40 years of woolly fun and excitement in 2017.
Wild and Woolly fun aplenty
at annual Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival
T
he third weekend of October each year is a time known throughout Western North Carolina and Tennessee as the reprise of the annual Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival. Weally, it is (pardon the pun). For aficionados who find the cool Autumn climate of Banner Elk and the thrill of a racing caterpillar a recipe for a great weekend, it’s all about the woolly worms. Thousands of visitors – crowds of up to 20,000 people or greater – have celebrated the four-decades-long tradition that is the annual edition of the Woolly Worm Festival in quaint downtown Banner Elk with food, music, arts and crafts and, of course, the woolly worm races that make this a one-of-a -kind, fun festival. If you’re lucky — or you have special skills in selecting or training a champion woolly worm — you can go home with the $1,000 grand prize as well. Festival creator Jim Morton would likely be amazed to see the metamorphosis of his idea for a fall festival – how it’s developed into one the region’s most popular events, sort of like the transition from a caterpillar to a butterfly, if you will. The Woolly Worm Festival gets bigger and
better every year with food and craft vendors, a designated area for 14 area nonprofits to exhibit the good that comes from revenue generated by the festival and, as always, the furry creatures racing up a string as their handlers cheer them on to victory. The weather is usually perfect. Average high temperature in Banner Elk on Woolly Worm Weekend is somewhere in the comfortable, low 60s, depending on the exact date each year. Scoff, if you dare, but the woolly worm is supposed to be an excellent judge of coming weather. According to those affiliated with the festival, the festival’s winning worm is correct almost 90 percent of the time in predicting the severity of winter. Never trained — let alone raced — a woolly worm? No problem. The truth is, there’s no proven successful formula for winning woolly worm races — not that the experts who have experienced success will share anyway. Many may come for the excitement of dramatic woolly worm racing, but many also stay for the fun on what typically is a gorgeous fall weekend amongst the splendor of the Blue Ridge Mountains. May the best worm win.
