Welcome to Banner Elk
A town, home and place for all seasons
O
n behalf of the Banner Elk Town Council and town staff, welcome to our special town. The transformation of Banner Elk in the past couple of years is spectacular. The corner building at the only light in Banner Elk is gone, and a beautiful new park with a striking clock tower (no pun intended) has taken its place. This began a town makeover. Our downtown restaurants began restorations. New businesses have settled in, including fun places for kids. The setting is so inviting to pedestrian traffic, with our beautiful elk still being the most photographed entity in Banner Elk. Banner Elk is no longer a pass-through between Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain. We are a destination, with our Historic Banner Elk School full of fun and exciting activities. The Ensemble stage, our 99-seat playhouse, has plays throughout the year performing before sold-out capacity crowds. An Art Co-op is available with wares from
juried, local artists. Mayland Community College offers a variety of interesting classes year round. The Book Exchange is a wonderful go-to place for adults and children with a full schedule of events, as well as multiple local businesses housed within the Cultural Arts Center at Historic Banner Elk School. Other opportunities for education and fun are Lees-McRae College’s May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The College’s flagship major is the best in the nation. Guests are welcome to visit the facility 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to observe care of injured eagles, raptors and other wildlife. Also of interest is the Banner Elk Museum. Here guests can learn about the founding families of Banner Elk, see artifacts, and secure space and dates for upcoming events. Particularly popular are the historic bus tours and the cemetery tours. Tate-Evans Town Park in downtown Banner Elk is always full of children, dogs, walkers and picnickers.

The park houses weekly concerts during the summer months and the park has become so popular that the town has expanded its size and activities. Our area offers four beautiful seasons. Of
course, the winter is dedicated to skiing and snowboarding in our area. Summer offers hiking and biking trails, golf and tennis, and the Lees-McRae Summer Theatre. Our fall foliage draws many guests to our area to observe the beauty. Fall brings the Woolly Worm Festival in Banner Elk. Summer brings four fabulous art festivals, the Fourth of July Parade and festivities. Winter brings the Small Town Christmas weekend, complete with a light parade and Santa. Banner Elk has its own brewery and winery, and there are others within the area. These are popular places for weddings and events year round. Banner Elk is located off the North Carolina Scenic Byway and close to the Appalachian Trail. Welcome to both our visitors and locals. Aren’t we glad we live in the most special place on earth? Brenda Lyerly Banner Elk mayor
Welcome to Banner Elk’s college, Lees-McRae
A
s a native of this region, I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve Lees-McRae College and to live in Avery County. From my perspective, there is no more beautiful and soulful place than Banner Elk. At Lees-McRae College, we are dedicated to the intellectual, spiritual and physical growth of our students. The college is committed to providing a quality, values-based education, inspiring and enabling individuals to contribute to a changing society with integrity and civic responsibility. While there are many distinguishing characteristics of Lees-McRae College, none is more important than location. At 3,740 feet above sea level, we are the highest campus in the eastern United States. With a campus of more than 460 acres, LeesMcRae is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream graced with forests, rivers, lakes and fields near the base of Beech Mountain, with Grandfather Mountain and Sugar Mountain, the Pisgah and Cherokee national forests and the Linville Gorge Wilderness nearby. Our natural ecosystems are among the most diverse in the world and serve as laboratories for study in many disciplines. The beautiful native stone buildings that
grace our campus date back to the early 1900s. We are dedicated to their preservation and adaptive reuse. I encourage you to visit the LeesMcRae campus Dr. Barry M. Buxton and experience the beauty for yourself. Take a campus tour, meet our dedicated faculty and staff and talk with some of our amazing students who come from all across the globe. Stop by the historic Mill Pond and Cheese House and learn more about our history. Tour the Dianne and Dan May Wildlife Rehabilitation Center on the Elk River and see firsthand this unique academic program. Attend some of our highly acclaimed theatre productions or stop in our sports complex and experience the excitement of our student-athletes as they compete in 21 different NCAA sports. We are grateful and we are blessed at Lees-McRae College. Sincerely, Dr. Barry M. Buxton President, Lees-McRae College

A SLICE OF PARADISE Banner Elk housing market ripe with opportunities ranging from $50,000 up to the $300,000 range. Other than that, you start thinking about your rural areas, kind of off the beaten path somewhere.” While Fields says that the region is still a buyer’s market in some ways, he also sees a inventory gradually shrinking, which will eventually lead to higher home prices in the region. “The steals and deals have been picked over and I think we’re getting back to a point where its 50/50 in favor of buyers and sellers.” For more information on the High Country Association of Realtors, as well as monthly updates on the area housing market, click to www.highcountryrealtors.org. or many who visit the High Country, the fresh mountain air and easy way of living offer a little touch of paradise in an increasingly fast-paced world. After seeing all that Banner Elk and the surrounding area has to offer, perhaps you’re ready to take the plunge and invest in a new home for you and your family. Whether one is in the market for a full-time residence or a second home, there are countless realtors in the High Country who can help you claim your own little slice of paradise. From picturesque mountaintop perches to secluded cabins wreathed in rhododendron, there is a home for every taste to be had in Avery County. Since home sales bottomed out in the High Country in 2010, the region as a whole has seen a steady trend of growth during the past seven years. Speaking with Lawson Fields, who serves as the local director for the Banner Elk area with the High Country Association of Realtors, as the market continues to rebound, there are still plenty of opportunities for buyers. “It’s taken us a while to get out of the recession,”
PHOTO COURTESY PRIMER SOTHEBY’S INTERNATIONAL REALTY The Greater Banner Elk area is ripe with a variety of real estate opportunities for those interested in investing in a new home.
Fields said. “In some areas, the inventory is still very high and the demand is slowly starting to creep back up.” Fields said that homes are more likely to go quickly when there have been recent renovations. While inventory of homes in the $500,000 or less is considerable, Fields says that there are many opportunities available in the $500,000plus range. “The sweet spot with all of our buyers these days is between $200,000 and $400,000,” Fields said. “Mainly people are looking for three bedrooms and two
baths at a minimum. The $500,000 to $1 million has been better this year, and then on the $1 to 2 million homes, the inventory is very high on those. It seems that the trend is that the buyers that could afford these million or multi-million dollar houses are holding onto their cash a little bit tighter than they used to.” For those seeking a more modest homesite, there are a number of homes in the $50,000 to $200,000 range in the surrounding area, if one is prepared to look. “There are a couple different areas where someone can find that inventory,”
Fields said. “On Beech Mountain, there are a ton of properties in the $200,000
or less range. Land Harbor has also had an uptick in sales and they’ve got houses

Have a wild and WOOLLY time at Banner Elk’s annual Woolly Worm Festival BY JAMIE SHELL editor@averyjournal.com
BANNER ELK — For 40 years residents of the High Country and beyond have set aside the third weekend in October of every year to celebrate a festival dedicated to the fuzzy, furry woolly worm. The festival, which started on a cool, blustery day in its first year of competition with only 63 worms and eight heats, has grown to more than 1,200 worms, 25 worms in each heat, with owners hoping that theirs is the resourceful worm that will win the grand prize of $1,000 that is awarded on Saturday. Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival is sponsored by Banner Elk Kiwanis and Avery County Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a great festival, as it has something for everyone,” said Roy Krege, who for the past four decades served as “Mr. Woolly Worm” before hanging up his colorful festival-inspired suit following the 2016 event. Participants may provide their own worm to race, or worms may be bought onsite for a small fee. Besides the obvious motivation that cash provides, the winning worm is also given the distinction of being used as the “worm of record” to predict the weather for Banner Elk and the
surrounding High Country during the winter months to come. The champion woolly worm’s markings are interpreted by seven-foot, two-inch former North Carolina State University star player, 1972 Olympic basketball team member and Avery County native Tommy Burleson. The bands of fur on the worm that vary in shading and color between brown and black determine the weather forecast. The 13 segments on the woolly worm’s back correspond to the 13 weeks of winter, progressing from the head to the tail. The darker the band, the more severe the weather forecast for that week. The fun doesn’t stop with Saturday’s races. Competition continues from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, as racers compete for the ultimate goal of taking home the Sunday grand purse of $500. Generally, statistics show that there are fewer heats that occur on Sunday, which naturally increases a competitor’s opportunity to haul in extra spending cash with the help of a furry friend. To race a worm, the cost is $5. In addition to the races, there will be food and craft vendors throughout the festival grounds with artifacts, various snacks and meal items as dulcet tones from the onsite DJ fills and air. For more information, contact Avery County Chamber of Commerce at (828) 898-5605 or click to www.averycounty.com.

Banner Elk before the Banners BY MICHAEL C. HARDY

M
any of our local communities are named for prominent local families. Most residents and even most visitors know that the name of Banner Elk is tied to the Banner family, but there is a long history of settlement centered around the area that is today Banner Elk, a history that actually predates the Banners themselves and which has other names stamped upon it. The story of how the Banner family came to the region is a well-known piece of local history. Martin L. Banner traveled into these parts from Forsyth County about 1848; he promptly bought property and built a cabin. He soon became bored with his surroundings and sold out to the Dugger family. Banner then moved on to Carter County, Tennessee. Martin eventually returned to area a few years later and settled in the Montezuma community. In 1856, Lewis Banner, a brother to Martin, moved to the area and purchased 200 acres of land on Elk Creek. He brought with him his five sons and three daughters. They are the ones who gave the name “Banner” to Banner Elk. A post office called Banner’s Elk opened on June 16, 1875. Today, Banner Elk is considered one of the premier vacation sites in western North Carolina. However, there were pioneers in the area prior to the Banners. One of the first was David Hix. About the same time that Samuel Bright was settling down
near the present-day site of the Avery County Airport, near Ingalls, David Hix was settling in the Valle Crucis area of Watauga County. His home was surrounded by a palisade wall and was generally known as Hix’s Fort. He was living there with his family, including his two sons, Samuel and David; his two son-in-laws, Thomas and Mikel Asher; two other men named Lucus and Asher, and a hired woman named Ireland, along with her daughter, Jenny. For a brief amount of time, the group moved further down the Watauga River, living near Dugger’s Iron Works in what is
present-day Carter County, Tenn. It was here that Jenny was abducted, probably by the Shawnee; she lived for seven years near the Ohio River and married one of their warriors. She was later purchased by some “Indian traders” and was eventually able to return to her mother. Hix lived at Dugger’s Iron Works for maybe a year before returning to Valle Crucis. One source puts him back on the upper section of the Watauga River about 1776 or 1777. As the American Revolution broke out on the frontier as well as in the more populated sections of the Colonies, Hix’s position became more

complicated and difficult. In fact, it is not even very clear where his loyalties actually were. One source considered Hix a Tory, while another considered him to be of a more neutral position. Clearly, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, Patriot leader and legendary foe of Tories in the backcountry, believed Hix was an enemy to the Patriot cause. At one point, Cleveland traveled from Wilkesboro and laid siege to Hix’s Fort. After a few days, Hix believed that Cleveland had retreated, and when the settlers ventured forth, Cleveland ambushed them, killing Hix’s son-in-law. Mikel, and wounding David Hix. Cleveland’s men then
plundered Hix’s Fort. At some point, it appears that the Hix family fled their fort in Valle Crucis. The family came to the area near present-day Banner Elk, presumably at some point during the American Revolution. John Preston Arthur, in his history of Watauga County, tells us that Hix eventually “became uneasy and retired to the wilderness near what is now Banner Elk, where he made camp and supported himself by hunting and making maple syrup and sugar, thus avoiding service as an American or a Tory.” Hix did manage to avoid swearing allegiance to either side during the war. Arthur goes on to tell us that people 100 years ago still plowed up coal “near the Lybrook farm, near the Grandfather Orphanage” and that local people knew the area as the Hix Improvement, “that being the place here Samuel Hix ‘laid out during the Revolutionary War.’” It is possible that David Hix died in the Banner Elk area in 1792 or 1793. His will, drawn up by a resident from Washington County (now Tennessee), was probated in Wilkes County. Arthur adds that there “were no clearings of any extent at Banner Elk, except those at the Hix Improvement, which was very small, and at Big Bottoms but there were two ‘deadenings,’ one called the Moses Deadening and the other the Lark Chopping.” These last two were probably locations where trees had been cut in such a way where their death was certain, thus opening up new ground for cultivation. Arthur also tells us that David Hix soon had neighbors: Baker King and Ben Dugger. There are plenty of Duggers still in the area. Members of the Hix family are also still here in Avery County, but, over time, the name has morphed into the more familiar Hicks. Though there were others seeking to settle in the region well before the 1840, it would be the Banner family whose name would stick to the community.
