n behalf of the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, we welcome you to Avery County. Avery County offers extraordinary adventures, usually cooler summer temperatures and is located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The region provides four distinct seasons, true Southern hospitality and welcomes seekers of all ages. Activities abound year round, including hiking, biking, rafting, tubing, golf, horseback riding, antiquing, zipline, swimming, art festivals, art galleries, excellent cuisine and shopping, wineries, breweries and unique entertainment while exploring Linville Caverns. Also, the area now offers a certified Bare Dark Sky Observatory and the first NC Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster. Grandfather Mountain provides a Mile-High Swinging Bridge, wildlife habitat and a 360-degree spectacular view from an elevation of 5,964 feet-the highest peak in the Blue Ridge section of the Appalachian Mountains. Nestled
on the Blue Ridge Parkway is the Linn Cove Viaduct that hugs the face of Grandfather Mountain and is recognized internationally as an engineering marvel. This was the final link of the Parkway to be completed. Located in Newland, the county seat, and housed in the old county jail is the Avery County Historical Museum. While visiting, railroad buffs even have an opportunity to walk in one of the old rail cars of Tweetsie that was originally from the East Tennessee and Western NC Railroad. The Civil War Trails also offers three distinct landmarks which are Blalock, Cranberry Mines and the Banner House. Before leaving the area, experience the art of weaving at Crossnore Weavers; a National Historic Site placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001, and view “Suffer the Little Children” a Ben Long fresco located in the E.H. Sloop Chapel on the campus of Crossnore School and Children’s Home. The fall not only exudes exquisite
fall color but the third weekend in October provides the annual Woolly Worm Festival — the Official Woolly Worm Festival of NC. The two-day juried festival offers craft vendors, delicious food, amusements for children and racing fury woolly worms for great prizes! If you visit in the winter you have the opportunity to ski the highest summits of the South which are Appalachian Ski Mountain, Beech Mountain Resort and Sugar Mountain Resort. Ice skating, snow tubing and a possible snow are also wonders of this beautiful region. I hope you enjoy your visit, and thank you for coming. hen the thoughts of small town America play in my mind, the picture of Banner Elk is what I envision. Banner Elk has such a dichotomy. On its surface it gives the appearance of the simple times of old, but, look a bit closer, and you see a state-of-theart area with the best of restaurants, boutiques and shops. As sheriff of Avery County, in which Banner Elk is the face for so many visitors each year, I cordially invite you to come by, visit, spend some time and get to know the best area and the best county in the entire state. I can assure those who come by that you will come back — our Southern hospitality and local charm will win you over like it does thousands of others each year. So, if you like small-town atmosphere, but want the best of modern conveniences; if you want one of the safest places in America but still want to have and be close to active night activities; if you want four true seasons to see God’s handiwork in nature, then you want to come to Banner Elk, in Avery County, N.C. Kevin Frye Avery County Sheriff
ocated in the unique town of Banner Elk, Banner Elk Elementary School is one of five elementary schools within the Avery County School System. It is the most recently constructed school in the county and was opened in 2011. The building is a state-ofthe-art facility with an administration, faculty and staff who are dedicated to providing an exceptional educational experience for all students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Banner Elk Elementary School works very closely with our local civic organizations. For example, Kiwanis supports our Terrific Kids’ program and the Woolly Worm Festival. The school also receives tremendous support from the High Country Charitable Foundation for the book exchange program and the after school program. These are just a few examples that BES is truly a community school and is supported by the local businesses and community members. In addition to a caring and capable staff, Banner Elk Elementary has a very active Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO, along with school

and county staff, ensure that students have very diverse opportunities to learn including the designation as an “Arts A+” school that integrates the arts with curriculum. BES was recognized in December 2019 as having achieved the distinction of “Exceeding Academic Growth” for the 2018-2019 school year. As a result of outstanding programs and support
for all students, enrollment at BES has steadily increased year after year. Technology is woven into all aspects of the curriculum. The Avery County School System was the first school system in North Carolina to deploy the “1 to 1” initiative. Our “1 to 1” initiative continues to provide students in kindergarten through twelfth grade with computers to support technology requirements expected within the current and future workforce. When students complete the fifth grade at BES, they will go to one of the Avery County’s two middle schools, Cranberry Middle School or Avery Middle School. Following middle school, students then transi-
tion to Avery High School. All of these schools are excellent places for any child to achieve their utmost potential. Avery County is consistently in the top five percent for the graduation rate in North Carolina. As a result of our visionary Board of Education and county government, the Avery County High School is currently undergoing a massive $20 million expansion and renovations to accommodate 21st century learning. Not only are Avery County’s schools extraordinary, the community itself is very welcoming and offers true southern hospitality from our local community members. It is a beautiful place with outstanding people and breathtaking views. If you are new to the area or considering joining our community, we welcome the chance to showcase all Avery County has to offer. For more information about our world-class school system and Banner Elk Elementary School, please visit our website at averycountyschools.net. Thank you and God bless. Welcome from Lees-McRae College This year, more than ever, the notion of a “hometown” carries a special significance. Hometowns are traditionally places of refuge and comfort, where there is a sense of belonging, no matter how long you have been away or how far you have roamed. While we may not be able to return to our hometowns in person this year, I am grateful that for many people, Lees-McRae College is their hometown. For 120 years, Lees-McRae College has called Banner Elk home. We are intrinsically linked to each other, and we are stronger because of our shared history and our ongoing collaboration. As the college looks to implement its
Lee King, President, LeesMcRae College
Facilities Master Plan, I am excited about the possibilities to build upon our relationship by
creating new community gathering spaces and offering new retail ventures that capitalize on our natural environment as we focus on our motto—In the Mountains, Of the Mountains, For the Mountains. Implementation of the first phase of the plan will begin this summer with renovations to our historic campus buildings and our dining hall.
We remain hopeful that we will be able to travel to our hometowns next year, and we invite you to visit Lees-McRae College and see why it represents home to so many of our students, alumni, faculty, staff and community members. Lee King President, LeesMcRae College

Welcome
A town, home and place for all seasons Welcome to Banner Elk, where the scenery is spectacular and hospitality is the specialty. Banner Elk was recognized by Southern Living Magazine as a Favorite Small Town in North Carolina, Western North Carolina Magazine named Banner Elk as one of the 13 Best Small Towns in Western North Carolina and Planetware.com listed Banner Elk as one of the top ten rated Small Towns in North Carolina. Our restaurants are regularly featured as extraordinary. The weather is cooler in the summer, brings beautiful fall colors, and produces snow for our ski slopes in the winter. Although the town did the right thing by canceling events this year as a result of the Covid 19, people could still enjoy the beautiful town décor and flowers, photos
with the elk, restaurants and ice cream. The park was well used by children and pets and their parents. The area still can enjoy golfing, hiking, and tubing in the summer, skiing in the winter, the Wilderness Run Alpine Coaster, Grandfather Mountain and all outdoor activities. Stay tuned next year for our regular activities including the best small town July 4th parade and activities, the Christmas lights parade and activities, the Easter Egg Hunt, the summer Thursday night concerts in the park, Ensemble Stage and Lees-McRae College Summer Theatre, the Woolly Worm Festival, and all of the summer art shows. The Banner Elk Museum will reopen, and they will resume their historic bus tours and walking tours. The Book Exchange, the BE Artist Gallery and all the groups
in the Historic Banner Elk School are anxious to get back to normal and open for business. Wildcat Lake will reopen for swimming, fishing and boating. Another asset to Banner Elk is Lees-McRae College in the heart of downtown. The faculty, staff, students and, of course, President Lee King all contribute so much to our economy and community. Citizens and visitors can all enjoy the May Wildlife Center as well as the Summer Theatre. If you need to cheer on the teams, they have plenty of sporting events to attend. For those who are residents, stay safe. For those who are new residents and visitors, welcome to this special place we call Banner Elk. Brenda Lyerly Banner Elk Mayor

source of entertainment in Banner Elk, Lees-McRae College is a four-year school for higher education, located only minutes from one of the most popular ski resorts in North Carolina, Beech Mountain Resort. Lees-McRae strives to “educate and inspire students to approach life and work from a creative, collaborative and critical perspective in preparation for diverse careers and environments,” according to the college’s mission statement. While it began informally as a multigrade school in 1900, the college was not officially founded as being an institute for higher education until 1931, after the death of its founder, Rev. Edgar Tufts in 1923. “Lees-McRae’s impact on the entire
High Country, especially Banner Elk and Avery County, is significant,” said LeesMcRae President Lee King. “The economic impact of nearly 1,000 students is very meaningful to the community, and our athletic, theatre and community service programs enhance the quality of life of the region.” Today, Lees-McRae offers dozens of programs of study, broken up into majors, minors, online and in-person classes and in 2018, added its first graduate program for teaching. Additionally, nestled in the heart of the High Country, Lees-McRae offers Outdoor Recreation programs that highlight the rich culture of the area, including a Ski Industry Minor that was first introduced to the college in fall 2019.

Banner Elk hosts a bevy of beverage destinations
BY LUKE BARBER luke.barber@averyjournal.com
Banner Elk is a hotspot for food, beer, wine, spirits and other beverages, offering visitors and local homebodies alike opportunities to become acclimated to the town’s beautiful scenery and rustic architecture.
KETTELL BEERWORKS Kettell Beerworks is a family owned and operated brewery whose name means “cauldron,” an appropriate title for a brewery considering that Mark and Yumiko Ralston have been brewing up a storm since opening Banner Elk’s brewery in 2017. On tap is the Vonderbier, a Munich-style lager; ROLLCAST, a Kolsch ale with fruit notes and a clean finish; Copper Elk, an American amber ale and Velvet Panda, a creamy oatmeal stout, among many more seasonal and hand-crafted brews. The brewery also servers classic bar staples that pair perfectly with their craft beers. Kettell Beerworks distributes across their state, and their signature brews can be found throughout the High Country and local area, including restaurants and grocery chains. For more information click to kettellbeerworks.com, or call (828) 898-8677.

Banner Elk: A community built for adventure BY ANDREW COLE andrew.cole@mountaintimes.com
Adventures welcome, Banner Elk and its surrounding area has more opportunities to explore the great outdoors than you can shake a stick at. From high-flying adventures such as ziplining to more laid-back pursuits such as fishing and hiking, Banner Elk offers something for outdoorsmen from all walks of life. Just a 40-minute drive from Banner Elk, individuals can experience the majesty of the mountains by taking a trek through the Roan Highlands. Here the Appalachian Trail straddles the North Carolina-Tennessee line, offering hikers 360-degree views of the Blue Ridge before continuing north toward Maine. Other nearby peaks include Grandfather Mountain, which takes its name from the mountain’s distinct profile, which resembles the face of an elderly man. Twelve miles of trails wind their way through Grandfather Mountain State Park, which gives individuals access to a wide range of ecological zones. Nestled on top of the mountain is the Grandfather Mountain attraction, which is not only a great spot to take in the surrounding views, but also features the famous MileHigh Swinging Bridge. Deemed a classroom in the clouds, the Grandfather Mountain attraction also offers a nature museum and several wildlife habitats where guests can view animals such as black bears, mountain lions and river otters and hear daily educational programs. Following the transition from fall to winter, nearby Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain resorts offer ample opportunities for winter

sports such as skiing and snowboarding. Meanwhile, nearby Hawksnest offers 30 lanes of snow tubing, as well as both summer and winter ziplining tours. Individuals looking for a more leisurely outdoor pursuit can tee off at one of the area’s local golf courses. Both Beech and Sugar Mountain offer stunning 18-hole golf courses where players can take in beautiful views of the surrounding mountains while they practice their swing. Located three minutes from downtown Banner Elk, Wildcat Lake offers visitors the opportunity for swimming, canoeing and picnicking. However, one of the most well-known and lookedforward-to events of the year is Banner Elk’s annual
Woolly Worm Festival. Each October, spectators fill the streets of Banner Elk to check out the woolly worm races and partake in the festivities. Folks looking to try their hand at piloting a woolly worm are encouraged to bring their own or can purchase one at the event. The worms race vertically up a string, with the victorious worm achieving the honor of predicting the year’s winter weather. Whether you’re looking for a laid-back stroll through the park, or a adrenaline-pumping climb up the craggy peaks of Grandfather Mountain, Banner Elk truly offers something for everyone. Anyone looking to feed their need for adventure can do so in the High Country.

Snapshots of Historic Banner Elk COMPILED BY JAMIE SHELL jamie.shell@averyjournal.com
The town of Banner Elk boasts a long and rich history. The following is a sampling of images taking viewers back in time to what made Banner Elk past and present the quintessential American town. PHOTO COURTESY MICHAEL HARDY The Rev. Edgar Tufts founded Lees-McRae Institute in 1900, arriving three years earlier on the orders of Virginia’s Union Theological Seminary to organize a Presbyterian church in Banner Elk. Lees-McRae Institute became Lees-McRae College in 1931, an accredited co-ed junior college, and then transitioned to a senior (fouryear) college in 1990. Tufts served the Banner Elk community until his death in 1923.
PHOTO COURTESY MICHAEL HARDY Banner Elk, a once remote Appalachian community, is the home of major and ongoing missions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Three church related institutions – Lees-McRae College, Grandfather Home and Orphanage and Grace (later Cannon) Hospital, pictured – were established around the turn of the century, primarily through the efforts of the Presbyterian Church, U.S., and the Rev. Edgar Tufts. In 1923, a makeshift hospital in Banner Elk was averaging five patients per night and the need for more space was critical. Helen Hartley Jenkins donated $22,000 to build a 25-bed hospital, which was named after her sister, Grace. According to historical archives, the new hospital had running water, electricity and a coal-fired furnace. The kitchen was on the first floor along with living quarters for the director of nursing and the dietitian. Patient rooms were on the second and third floors and the operating room and nurses’ quarters were on the top floor.

Banner Elk before the Banners BY MICHAEL C. HARDY
Many of our local communities are named for prominent local families. Most residents and even most visitors know that the name of Banner Elk is tied to the Banner family, but there is a long history of settlement centered around the area that is today Banner Elk, a history that actually predates the Banners themselves and which has other names stamped upon it. The story of how the Banner family came to the region is a well-known piece of local history. Martin L. Banner traveled into these parts from Forsyth County about 1848; he promptly bought property and built a cabin. He soon became bored with his surroundings and sold out to the Dugger family. Banner then moved on to Carter County, Tenn. Martin eventually returned to area a few years later and settled in the Montezuma community. In 1856, Lewis Banner, a brother to Martin, moved to the area and purchased 200 acres of land on Elk Creek. He brought with him his five sons and three
daughters. They are the ones who gave the name “Banner” to Banner Elk. A post office called Banner’s Elk opened on June 16, 1875. Today, Banner Elk is considered one of the premier vacation sites in western North Carolina. However, there were pioneers in the area prior to the Banners. One of the first was David Hix. About the same time that Samuel Bright was settling down near the present-day site of the Avery County Airport, near Ingalls, David Hix was settling in the Valle Crucis area of Watauga County. His home was surrounded by a palisade wall and was generally known as Hix’s Fort. He was living there with his family, including his two sons, Samuel and David; his two son-in-laws, Thomas and Mikel Asher; two other men named Lucus and Asher, and a hired woman named Ireland, along with her daughter, Jenny. For a brief amount of time, the group moved further down the Watauga River, living near Dugger’s Iron Works in what is present-day Carter County, Tenn. It was here that Jen-

ny was abducted, probably by the Shawnee; she lived for seven years near the Ohio River and married one of their warriors. She was later purchased by some “Indian traders” and was eventually able to return to her mother. Hix lived at Dugger’s Iron Works for maybe a year before returning to Valle Crucis. One source puts him back on the upper section of the Watauga River about 1776 or 1777. As the American Revolution broke out on the frontier as well as in the more populated sections of the Colonies, Hix’s position became more complicated and difficult. In fact, it is
not even very clear where his loyalties actually were. One source considered Hix a Tory, while another considered him to be of a more neutral position. Clearly, Col. Benjamin Cleveland, Patriot leader and legendary foe of Tories in the backcountry, believed Hix was an enemy to the Patriot cause. At one point, Cleveland traveled from Wilkesboro and laid siege to Hix’s Fort. After a few days, Hix believed that Cleveland had retreated, and when the settlers ventured forth, Cleveland ambushed them, killing Hix’s son-in-law. Mikel, and wounding David Hix. Cleveland’s men then
plundered Hix’s Fort. At some point, it appears that the Hix family fled their fort in Valle Crucis. The family came to the area near present-day Banner Elk, presumably at some point during the American Revolution. John Preston Arthur, in his history of Watauga County, tells us that Hix eventually “became uneasy and retired to the wilderness near what is now Banner Elk, where he made camp and supported himself by hunting and making maple syrup and sugar, thus avoiding service as an American or a Tory.” Hix did manage to avoid swearing allegiance to either side during the war.
Arthur goes on to tell us that people 100 years ago still plowed up coal “near the Lybrook farm, near the Grandfather Orphanage” and that local people knew the area as the Hix Improvement, “that being the place here Samuel Hix ‘laid out during the Revolutionary War.’” It is possible that David Hix died in the Banner Elk area in 1792 or 1793. His will, drawn up by a resident from Washington County (now Tennessee), was probated in Wilkes County. Arthur adds that there “were no clearings of any extent at Banner Elk, except those at the Hix Improvement, which was very small, and at Big Bottoms but there were two ‘deadenings,’ one called the Moses Deadening and the other the Lark Chopping.” These last two were probably locations where trees had been cut in such a way where their death was certain, thus opening up new ground for cultivation. Arthur also tells us that David Hix soon had neighbors: Baker King and Ben Dugger. There are plenty of Duggers still in the area. Members of the Hix family are also still here in Avery County, but, over time, the name has morphed into the more familiar Hicks. Though there were others seeking to settle in the region well before the 1840, it would be the Banner family whose name would stick to the community. Michael C. Annual Woolly Worm Festival brings thousands to town BY JAMIE SHELL editor@averyjournal.com
Whether it be a seasonably cool and clear weekend afternoon with a bright sun beaming or an overcast and chilly fall day, the High Country generally offers a plethora of opportunities throughout the season to satisfy virtually anyone’s discriminating taste. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, however, many area festivals faced the unfortunate reality of having to cancel their annual events, as area festivals often average into the thousands of patrons to visit the area and festival grounds. One such event affected this year was the annual Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival. For the past 42 years, the Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival has brought thousands of patrons to downtown Banner Elk for woolly weekend of fun. Recognized as “The Official Woolly Worm Festival of North Carolina.” the festival features wriggling worms working their way up a string to bring glory (and some folding money) to its owner, as well as the time-honored tradition of the worm predicting the upcoming winter weather in the High Country. The festival, which has been going strong in the High Country since 1978, has transcended its local, small town roots and firmly planted itself, much like worms on a string, upon the national stage. Festival co-founder Jim Morton, who spent his first autumn in the area in 1973, was enamored by the local legend of the woolly worm as a weather forecaster. According to folklore, the 13 segments of a woolly worm correspond with the 13 weeks of winter. Black segments are said to indi-

cate severe weather, while orange or brown segments are indicative of milder weeks. Morton put the worm to work in Banner Elk when he, along with a group of local merchants, was tasked to find an annual event to bring to the area. While Morton had faith in the little worm’s accuracy, not all worms tell the same story. Some of the High Country’s woolliest denizens warned of severe winter weather with their solid black coats. Other, perhaps more optimistic worms in the same area would have more brown on their backs, indicating that the winter would be mild. While all the worms were woolly, not all the the worms could be right, so Morton set out to find only the best wormy weathermen by means of a race, of course. It stands to reason, at least to all of those learned
in worm lore, that the fastest, most fit woollies will naturally be the most able forecasters of the weather. So it has been ever since. Woolly worms and their handlers have flocked to Banner Elk every year from all over the world for the chance to win the right to warn the High Country about its upcoming season. Banner Elk’s small population swells during the festival. More than 20,000 people have attended the past few events. People flock from all over the country, and not just to gratify the olympian ambitions of their woolly worms. The Banner Elk festival has something to offer to the whole family. In recent years, more than 150 art and craft vendors have been present at the event. Prospective vendors are juried by the Woolly Worm Festival Committee so that only the best handmade wares
are allowed to be sold. No buy and resell vendors are allowed at the festival. The festival, while now a mega-modern woolly worm event to rival the very woolliest the world has to offer, had humble beginnings. The first Woolly Worm Festival took place at Banner Elk Elementary School on a cold and windy day. The festival organizers discovered through their groundbreaking worm research that woolly worms, like people, aren’t usually too interested in recreational climbing when it is too cold. Unfortunately, it is currently impossible to impress the importance of the race upon the woolly worms who, while they are endowed with certain meteorological abilities, resolutely don’t speak English. To combat the cold, which typically hasn’t totally taken hold over the
High Country by mid-October, handlers have now learned that worms can be motivated by hot air blown
through a straw, as well as vocal encouragement. The worms that festivalgoers race in the fall aren’t just adept at predicting the winter, they are also well equipped to survive it. Woolly Worms outlast the winter in hibernation. Instead of burrowing deep underground like many animals, they choose to spend the winter closer to the surface, under rocks, fallen foliage or logs. The worms produce a chemical called cryoprotectant that allows their bodies to totally freeze solid with no adverse effects. Some worms are known to survive as many as 14 winters using this method. When it decides it is ready and the spring thaw comes, the worm that stuck itself in the freezer emerges as a moth and spends its newly winged life fluttering around lamps and streetlights remembering the glory days when it was a weather-forecasting festival star. CHAMBER ‘CHARGER’ CAPTURES MUTED 2020 WOOLLY WORM PRIZE A small gathering of dedicated wooly worm enthusiasts convened on Holston Presbytery Camp on Saturday, Oct. 17, to take part in the annual racing of the carpeted caterpillars in a competition that come down to a matter of inches. While the overall festival had to be canceled this year due to the global pandemic, there was no stopping the two athletic arthropods representing the festival’s two primary sponsors, “Kiwanis Kicker” and “Chamber Charger,” as the two racers felt an intense need for speed and would end up clocking in at a blazing-fast time of approximately of five minutes per meter. The two racers were placed on their strings by Doug Owen of the Banner Elk Kiwanis Club and Hallie Willis of the Avery Chamber of Commerce. The winning worm received the distinct honor of predicting the winter weather for the upcoming season. “What’s that thing? It’s a groundhog? Is that what’s it’s called? It doesn’t do anything, it just comes out. The beans in the jar thing? There’s a couple of people that do the beans in the jar thing. For 43 years we’ve been doing this with 87.2 percent accuracy in winter predictions. This has been studied by students at Lees-McRae. It’s been published. You can find it somewhere on the deep web,” race announcer Adam Binder said. In the midst of the excitement, the Chamber Charger appeared to become confused and starting head-

The festival does not just bring families and commerce to the area to enjoy the day, it is also the largest fundraiser for two county nonprofits: The Avery County Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club of Banner Elk. The chamber supports local business, and Kiwanis’ mission is to help children
in the county. The funds raised at the event are split between the two organizations. According to officials, the festival takes in between $30,000 and $50,000 for the club. That money gets redistributed by Kiwanis through grants and supporting programs that directly support children. There are other groups that benefit from the festival as well. Banner Elk Ele-
mentary School sells woolly worms and woolly worm cages at the festival to raise money for its PTO. Principal Justin Carver said the PTO is fundraising for more arts integration at the school this year and is coming off the school’s recent fall festival. A number of groups sell parking spaces for the event as well. One of those is the local food pantry Feeding Avery Families.

ing in the opposite direction, but upon seeing the Kiwanis Kicker quickly climbing to the top, it turned around and began making its way toward victory. “The problem is, with a Kiwanis-sponsored worm, they’re always giving to others. So it’s probably looking for someone to help in the community,” Binder said as the worm stalled. After the Chamber Charger reached to the top of the rope, it was declared the winner and worm whisperer, former NC State basketball champion Tommy Burleson, evaluated the winning worm and deemed it fit for prognosticating the coming winter weather forecast. The winning worm curator, Halle Willis, said the secret to the worm’s success was a balanced diet. “We fed him grapes and bananas for breakfast, and he loves lounging around in ferns,” Willis said. Then, in the moment that everyone was waiting for, Burleson conducted the reading of the worm. The woolly worm has 13 segments that represent the 13 weeks of winter, with each colored segment representing the temperature for that particular week. According to the champion Charger, the first four weeks of winter for 2020-21 could see snow and below average temperatures, with the average winter temperature being 27°F. The next three bands are dark brown, meaning average normal temperatures for the following three weeks. A one-week fleck indicates below-average temperatures, with frost and a little snow. Two additional dark brown segments suggest average normal temperatures for the next two weeks. Another one-week fleck suggests below average temperatures with frost and minor snow. The last two weeks showed black, meaning snow and below average temperatures.
FAF distributes hundreds of thousands of pounds of food to local families each year, and they are allowed to sell parking spaces on an empty private parcel next to Banner Elk Town Hall at the festival. Executive Director Dick Larson said two years ago the nonprofit managed to raise $5,600 from the event, though the weather last year reduced their intake.
“We try to be good stewards,” Larson said. “We try to reseed and rake if we need to or grade if we need to.” The festival will return next fall for another round of worm races and another prediction. With the exception of the pandemic-induced cancellation of this year’s event, the Banner Elk Woolly Worm Festival is scheduled for each third weekend of
October. Races take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Saturday’s grand prize winner will go home with $1,000, while Sunday’s races, which are typically smaller, will award a grand prize of $500.
