BOONE — High Country Beer Fest returns to the High Country Fairgrounds in Boone for another round-up of local brews, food and music on Aug. 25. The beer festival features more than 50 breweries locally and regionally. Boone breweries Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Booneshine and Lost Province are just a few of the participants at this year’s festival. Beer Fest director and Appalachian State University associate professor Brett Taubman said that the 100 percent nonprofit festival supports the brewing industry, provides financial assistance to the fermentation sciences and chemistry departments via non-profit Ivory Tower Inc., and gives back to local charities, such as the 2018 Back 2 School Fest. Ivory Tower, which hosts High Country Beer Fest, is a nonprofit that raises money for student-driven research in ASU’s fermentation sciences and chemistry departments. “Part of supporting the industry is educating

our students to make the industry stronger as a whole, too,” Taubman said. “Doing whatever type of economic development we can in the High Country is critical, but supporting such a phenomenal industry — I just wanted to support that.” Local beers are not the only thing to look forward to at Beer Fest. For food offerings, All Thai’d Up, Appalachian Cookie Company, Boonetown BBQ, Galileo’s, Hatchet and The Cardinal will serve local fare. A few of the participating restaurants will team up with local breweries for a cheese and beer pairing at 3:30 p.m., a pizza and beer pairing at 4:30 p.m. and a cookie and beer pairing at 5:30 p.m. After the day is over, High Country Beer Fest partnered with Mountain Alliance and River and Earth Adventures to provide free transportation from Raley Lot on ASU’s campus to take people to and from the event. The bus will run from 2 p.m. until 9 p.m. The VIP bus will leave from Raley Lot as well, but will start running

an hour earlier for VIP ticket holders. If you decide to drive to the event, Bill’s Garage will tow your vehicle for free with up to 4 passengers within Boone city limits until 9 p.m. Tickets are $40 for general admission, which covers unlimited craft beers, pairing seminars and live music. Food is extra. VIP admission is $80 and allows entry one hour before the event starts, free food, free goodies and everything that general admission includes. An admission ticket for a designated driver is $10. To buy tickets, visit hcbeerfest.com or Peabody’s Wine & Beer Merchants on Highway 105 in Boone.

Appalachian Mountain Brewery Nestled in the High Country of North Carolina, Appalachian Mountain Brewery and Cidery is Boone, NC’s, Beer Pioneer. We’re dedicated to making seriously delicious craft beer while focusing on community, sustainability and philanthropy. We support the We Can So You Can Foundation, a 501(c)3 started by AMB CEO Sean Spiegelman, and help local nonprofits via our Pints for Non-Profits program in the taproom. These programs are integral to AMB’s commitment to empowering local organizations working to enrich the land, water, air and people of the High Country, as well as the greater Appalachian region. In 2018, we partnered with the Longleaf Alliance to plant one Longleaf Pine for every case of Long Leaf IPA sold. Since January 2018, we have contributed enough to plant over 20,000 Longleaf Pines across the state. We have earned numerous awards for our innovative craft beers and ciders, including Boone Creek Blonde Ale, which won a Gold Medal at the U.S. Open Beer Championships in 2015 and a Gold Medal at the 2017 Great American Beer Festival Competition. We proudly brew a variety of award winning ciders and beers, including Long Leaf IPA, Spoaty Oaty Pale Ale, and Porter, which is a gold medal winner at the Great International Beer and Cider Competition.

Booneshine: Moving on up Since 2015, Booneshine Brewing Company has been producing high-quality craft beer to the High Country. Co-owners Tim Herdklotz and Carson Coatner met through mutual friends and strengthened their bond through many fishing trips to the Outer Banks. In early 2015, the two friends decided to transform their homebrewing hobby into a business, and Booneshine was born. For almost three years, Booneshine brewed next door to Bails' Fresh Pasta and Deli. Booneshine's evolving taste and creations were available at Basil's tap room, which offered a family-friendly environment with salads, gourmet sandwiches, homemade pasta, soup and much more. Their slogan, "Make Boone Shine," perfectly describes its mission as a business — the combine the rich history of the High Country with a desire to contribute to the growth of the community. Going forward, Booneshine is looking to become more than a local favorite and in 2018, took a giant step to making that happen. After purchasing the former Highlands

International plant and property at 465 Industrial Park Drive, Booneshine moved its brewing operations from its original home at Winklers Creek Meadow to its new home. Booneshine co-owner Tim Herdklotz said in May that the move will allow production to grow from producing around 1,200 barrels (one barrel equals 31 gallons) a year to hopefully around 4,000 barrels a year in the new space. The move will allow Booneshine to fully serve the High Country and expand to other markets, Herdklotz said. The move came after Booneshine reached full capacity at its previous space and needed to move in order to take on new accounts and start selling off the mountain. Despite the move, Herdklotz emphasized that Booneshine will continue to be offered at Basil's at 246 Wilson Drive, Suite K, Boone. "We will eventually offer a tasting room and restaurant at our new brewery," Herdklotz explained. "For now, the tasting room continues to be hosted at our partner restaurant, Basil's. If you haven’t been to Basil's lately, be sure to stop by and check out the updated food menu and

dinner specials." Going forward, Booneshinne will be offering new brews, including a new IPA. "One of our newest brews is an IPA named Space Pegasus," Herdklotz said. "It all starts with a ridiculous nam .to match the crazy amount of hops we used in this tasty brew. Space Pegasus features a rainbow of delicious hops and a light malt profile. Spread your wings and try a pint of this astronomical IPA." Grandfather Vineyard & Winery When Steve and Sally Tatum, the Vineyard owners, purchased the property in 2000, Steve toyed with the idea of planting Christmas Trees – a popular endeavor in the area – but, a love of wine led him to plant grape vines. The Tatum’s have achieved a reality of owning a Vineyard & Winery that started when they first planted their grapes in 2003 and opened the doors of the winery in 2011. Since then their adventure has grown into the first producing winery in Watauga County that is producing world class wines. Grandfather Vineyard’s vines were first planted in 2003 and have been growing strong across five acres ever since. Although yields of their true mountain fruit are typically smaller, their vineyard is the home of 10 to 12 different varietals of wine grapes, including Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, St. Croix, Lando Noir, Chambourcin, Vidal Blanc, and more. Still, their climate and size make it impossible to grow everything. So, even though their wine production is done on site, they outsource grapes from around the county and state, as well as from

Lodi, California, to allow for the highest quality wines. On the other hand, the grapes grown there maintain an unparalleled flavor and hold their own in blends with more wellknown California grapes. All thanks to the nurturing and hard-working efforts of the Vineyard staff, the fruits of their labors are unlike any other. During the summer months their tasting room is open 7 days a week Monday - Saturday from 12-6pm and Sundays from 1-5pm (closed Tuesdays during winter), offering both dry and sweet wines. Every Sunday from May through October they feature live music from 1-4pm from local artists. Oftentimes, Sundays bring the biggest crowd, patrons bring a picnic, buy some wine and mingle with the owner Steve and his lovable lab

Zoebelle. Their philosophy is to treat everyone like family, to make customers feel welcomed and they will keep coming back. Visit our website, www.grandfathervineyards. com, for more information and for our food truck schedule.

The Station at 19E Nestled in the highland wilderness glory of the great state of Tennessee, along Highway 19 East at the Tennessee North Carolina border, is the town of Roan Mountain and a delightful Pub/Hostel known simply as The Station AT 19E. The Station offers a place to recharge after a long day of hiking, biking, or whatever outdoor activity you choose. They serve craft beer seven days a week. With eight taps of local craft beers, a huge selection of bottled/canned favorites, a broad menu of pub favorites to eat (including a fantastic fish and chips), and free Wi-Fi; it gives the outdoor enthusiast time to relax, invigorate, and enjoy. The brainchild of David Magee, the Station AT 19E, it is more than just a public house but a home away from home for “thru-hikers,” section hikers, and all adventurers on the Appalachian Trail. Above the pub, is a 27-bed bunkhouse-style hostel complete with laundry, kitchen and showers. The Station AT 19 E also serves as a moderate resupply station with snacks, soda, dehydrated food and fuel for stoves. They also offer parking for hikers (both long and short-term) and shuttles to the more popular gaps and trailheads in the area for a modest fee. Shuttles to and from the 19E trailhead and to town are complimentary. Are you weary? Give them a call; they will pick you up.

It took several months of cooperative labor and design to gut and convert the building with David getting the help of many thru-hikers and locals in the community. The amount of personal touches from so many hands gives the pub a funky charm and homey feel. Beginning in October of 2017 and having their Grand Opening on December of that same year, many 2017 and 2018 thru-hikers are proud to have had a part in the creation of this dream which is fast becoming an Appalachian Trail legend. The community of Roan Mountain has come together to support the hikers with a “Pour-it-Forward” board which allows whomever to buy a pint for a random, thirsty, thru-hiker. At last count 115 hikers received a pint on the town of Roan Mountain and friends and they are looking forward to presenting many more thru-hikers with a frosty pint in the coming years. The main bar tender “crazy wolf” who has been a part of the adventure from the beginning will guarantee a lively time. A hiker himself he is always eager to share his knowledge and stories

of the trail. The conversations are eclectic and the jokes numerous. The taps start flowing at 2:00 PM on weekdays and 12:00 PM on the weekends (varies according to events) and they keep pouring until “Hiker Midnight” (10:00 PM) and often beyond; depending on the guests. They currently host “Tastings” Thursdays, “Open Mic” on Fridays (always a hit with the local talent), and a live music venue on Saturdays. The Station AT 19 E is quickly becoming a center for music and entertainment in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, with musician Richard Bennett heading up the music venue. More games and events are scheduled and being planned as this is being penned, so please be sure to visit their website and/or Face book pages, to keep abreast of the happenings or even let us host an event for you at The Station AT 19E.
