Mountain Times Publications Best of Preps 2015 The first annual Best of the Preps was held to recognize studentathletes from Ashe County High School, Avery County High School and Watauga High School not only for their success in their sport of choice, but for their successes in academics and in their respective communities. Mountain Times Publications, which includes the Watauga Democrat, The Avery Journal-Times and the Ashe Mountain Times, hosted the event to honor local student-athletes not just for how they perform on the field, but in the classroom.

Student-athletes were also selected for their leadership skills and for their volunteerism in the community. Held at the Watauga High School auditorium, the event honored student-athletes in 23 sports. In addition, individual awards were given out for the Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Women’s StudentAthlete of the Year, the Comeback Award, the Community Service Award and the Extra Mile Coach of the Year Award. One candidate from each sport was chosen by the coaches from

each school. A committee of three anonymous and unbiased judges working independently determined the best of the preps from each individual sport. From the pool of studentathletes, the individual awards were chosen by another committee of three judges from Mountain Times Publications. The event was attended by the student-athletes, their friends and parents, coaches, athletic directors, school officials and by officials from Mountain Times Publications. Businesses in the community

also sponsored each award, and representatives from the different businesses were also in attendance. SkyLine/SkyBest was the presenting sponsor. The guest speaker was former NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel III. The event was emceed by Mountain Times Publications group publisher Gene Fowler. The winners of the awards were announced by The Avery Journal-Times sports editor Jamie Shell and Watauga Democrat sports editor Steve Behr. Photography was provided by Serena Smith.

rowing up, former collegiate and NFL quarterback Roman Gabriel III was fortunate to have a supportive community of family, teachers, coaches as well as access to substance abuse prevention programs, all of who helped to steer him in the right direction. Today, Gabriel said, it’s become even harder for kids to stay on track. Although the government has cut funding to programs such as D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), today’s youth still faces pressures within the media and from their peers when it comes to making the right decisions. Four years ago, the Wilmington native packed up and moved to Boone, bringing up the substance abuse program, SOLD OUT NC School Alcohol Abstinence and Character Education, which now reaches 20 counties around the state. SOLD OUT is a nonprofit that offers drug and alcohol resistance programs for public and private schools as well as training for teachers and principles showing them how to utilize the organization’s online tools. In addition to presentations featuring guest speakers including NFL players, Olympians and others, SOLD OUT offers a follow-up program that more than 4,000 students utilize. The program teaches today’s youth how to be successful in life by saying “yes” to extracurricular activities, positive role models, supportive friend groups and hard work while saying “no” to inhibitors such as drugs and alcohol. In addition, SOLD OUT teaches

other life skills such as social media responsibility and the importance of physical activity, Gabriel said. Gabriel said that he owes his success partly to his support groups in sports, extracurricular activities and Christian fellowships. He believes that these programs are just as important as testing and grades for schoolchildren, although they aren’t as emphasized. Gabriel’s passion for football began at 9 years old, and he went on to play as quarterback for the University of New Mexico in the early 1980s. Upon graduation, Gabriel signed with the Oakland Raiders as a free agent until an unfortunate neck injury kept him from playing. Since his injury, Gabriel has put his efforts toward not only coaching and training quarterbacks, but also motivational speaking, utilizing his speech communications major from UNM. In addition to his motivational speaking with SOLD OUT, Gabriel also hosts a radio program, “Sold Out Sports Talk,” which airs Saturday nights at 8:06 p.m. and is broadcast to about 150 cities nationwide. Today, Gabriel lives in Boone with his wife of 21 years. Gabriel’s two grown sons are an Appalachian State University professor and frozen yogurt business owner, respectively, and his four grandchildren aged 1 through 5 keep him busy. Gabriel leads through example and hasn’t had an alcoholic drink since 1996. For more information on SOLD OUT NC, visit www.soldout-tv.com.

New River Tire Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year Why he won:

M

ichael Holland would be a strong candidate for Men’s Athlete of the Year if it was just limited to his athleticism. When his academics and his volunteerism is included, his resume is that much better. Holland, a member of the Watauga boys’ cross-country team, had an outstanding year on the cross-country trails and during the track and field season. He was second in the seniors division of the Pioneers’ Class of the Classes competition and was third in the Caldwell County Invitational. He finished 11th in the Furman Classic and was 28th in a strong Wendy’s Invitational field. Holland was third in the Northwestern Conference Championships, which earned him all-

NWC recognition. He was fifth in the 4-A Western Regional Championships (which earned him all-regional status), and finished 30th in the state 4-A championships. Holland also helped lead Watauga’s track and field team to a NWC championship by winning the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:20.57. Holland was also second in the 1,600-meter run, and finished 14th in the state 4-A meet with a time of 10:00.44. Academically, Holland will graduate with a GPA of 3.98. He is a member of the National Society, the Honor Roll and was a Junior Marshall during the 2014 graduation. “Michael is one of the best captains I’ve ever had on my teams,” said Watauga cross-country and track coach Randy McDonough. “He leads not only by example, but also by his vocal lead-

ership.” Holland also volunteers with the Beech Mountain Fire Department, and helps with the Beech Mountain Trail building. He was able to combine his passion for running with firefighting by running in, and winning the Stop, Drop and Roll 5K road race. The event raised more than $3,000 for the North Carolina Firefighters Burned Children’s Fund, and scholarship money for Watauga High School graduates who wish to pursue a career in emergency services, such as firefighting, EMS or police work. Holland also volunteers for the Hospitality House, and helped organize a soccer match between the Watauga cross-country team and the Watauga soccer team to raise money for the Hunger Coalition.

atauga’s Kathleen Mansure is the latest in a long line of distance runners at Watauga who has not excelled only on cross-country courses and running tracks all over the state of North Carolina, but also in the classroom. Mansure, the winner of the Women’s Student-Athlete of the Year Award, had a senior season most cross-country runners can only dream of. It picked up when she won the Furman Classic and carried on by winning the High Country Classic. She added a victory at the prestigious Wendy’s Invitational, and continued by winning

the Northwestern Conference championship. Mansure wasn’t finished. She finished third in the 4-A Western Regional meet, and was the runner-up in the NCHSAA State 4-A CrossCountry Championships. That qualified her for the South Regional Footlocker National Championships, where she finished eighth. Since Mansure finished in the Top 10 at the regional, she qualified for the national Footlocker championships, where she finished 26th out of 40 runners. Mansure added championships in the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200-meter run at the Northwestern Conference Track and Field Championships in the spring. She was also a

member of the Pioneers’ 3,200-relay team that captured a NWC title. Mansure, who will run cross-country at UNC Greensboro next fall, closed out her prep career at Watauga with a runner-up finish in the 3,200 at the state 4-A track and field championships in Greensboro. In the classroom, Mansure carried a 4.0 grade point average and is 15th in her class. She also is a member of the National Honor Society and volunteered for several causes, including service at the F.A.R.M. Café, at Hospitality House, and participates in the clean-up of the New River and of the Blue Ridge Wildlife Sanctuary.

Blackberry Creek Mattress Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year Why he won:

here weren’t a lot of bright spots for Avery County’s baseball team this spring. Wade Smith was a diamond in the rough for the Vikings. Smith was a standout for the Vikings, who struggled to a 4-16 overall mark. Despite his team’s struggles, Smith hit .438 from the plate, and had seven multi-hit games in 2015. He finished with 21 hits, scored 12 runs, drove in 10 runs, and had two doubles and two home runs. Smith also was 4-of-5 stealing bases, and did not get caught until the final game of the season. He also had a fielding percentage of .929 after making just two errors

in 28 chances. Smith turned in one his biggest games in a 24-7 Avery win over Cloudland (Tenn.) on April 23. He went 3-for-5 from the plate with a home run and three RBIs. It was his second three-hit game of the season. He also tossed a no-hitter at Cloudland during his junior season. And that’s just baseball. Smith also was Avery’s Defensive Most Valuable Player following his junior year while earning honorable mention All-Western Highland Conference honors in football. He almost didn’t get a chance to play athletics his senior season. Smith tore the posterolateral ligament in one of his knees over the

summer of 2014. He was able to rehabilitate the injury and return to the diamond in the spring. “Wade could have very easily let that injury affect him,” Avery baseball coach Samuel Phillips said. “Instead, he is hitting in the middle of our lineup and is batting .400- and is captain or our team. He is a perfect example of what courage and strength and hard work will get you. I could not be prouder to be a part of his journey through this.” Smith also carried a 4.7 weighted grade point average and is in the Top 5 of his graduating class. He served as a Junior Marshall at graduation last year, and is a member of the National Honor Society and was president of the National Technical Honor Society.

hen Ashe County’s men’s basketball team needed some type of scoring, it looked to Alex Spencer. When different parts of the Ashe County community also needed some type of help, they also turned to Spencer. The Ashe County guard earned the Community Excellence Student-Athlete of the Year Award for excellence as a student and as an athlete. The numbers speak for themselves as far as Spencer’s athletic abilities on the basketball court. He led the Huskies in scoring with 12.1

points per game, and shot 43 percent from the field and was named all-Mountain Valley Conference. Spencer helped Ashe County to an 11-13 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the Mountain Valley Conference, which included a four-game winning streak toward the end of the season. He also helped the Huskies to a berth in the 2-A state men’s basketball playoffs. But there’s more to Spencer than basketball. He also finished the year with a 4.0 grade point average and was earned a North Carolina Scholar Athlete Award in 2014. Spencer also ranked second in his class. Spencer has also made an impact outside of Ashe County High School. He assisted in

packing 50,000 meals for the Hope for Hunger Project, and has stocked shelves at a local food pantry. Spencer has worked as a volunteer at the New River Festival, has worked with Relay For Life, with the Ducks Unlimited Banquet and has volunteered for the Blue Ridge Brutal 100. He has also been involved in multiple BETA Club projects at Ashe County High School, and has served as a camp counselor for four years at the Youth Summer Basketball Camps. “In my 17 years of teaching and coaching, he is the best academic student-athlete I’ve been fortunate to coach,” Ashe County men’s basketball coach Scott Grubb said. “His drive and commitment are only matched by his acumen.”

Jim Armstrong Subaru Coach’s Extra Mile Award Why he won:

T

he Extra Mile Coach of the Year Award winner is Avery men’s basketball coach Scott Polsgrove. Polsgrove led the Vikings to a 20-9 overall record and an appearance in the fourth round of the state 1-A boys’ basketball tournament this season. The Vikings won 17 straight games during the season, and finished with a 12-0

record and a Western Highlands Conference championship. Polsgrove is no stranger to the state playoffs or a conference championship. He led Avery to a 12-0 WHC record and conference title during the 2013-14 season. Avery finished with a 26-5 overall record in 2013-14 and reached the state 1-A semifinals, and put together a 20-game winning streak. It took a season for Polsgrove’s teams to

reach that level of success. His first season at Avery, which was the 2012-13 campaign, ended with a 13-15 overall record and a 7-7 WHC mark. Still, it was an improvement from the 2011-12 season, which ended with a 4-20 overall record, 1-13 in the conference. For his continued success in reshaping Avery’s boys’ basketball program, Polsgrove is the winner of the Extra Mile Coach of the Year Award.

ade Smith is a difference-maker on and off the field. The son of Sara and former NFL player Terry Smith of Linville, Smith has excelled in the athletic arena. Wade showed dominance on the pitcher’s mound in throwing a no-hitter against Cloudland (Tenn.) High School as a junior, and was named Defensive Most Valuable Player the same season.

Wade also excelled as a gridiron player, as he was named the Avery football team’s Defensive Most Valuable Player following his junior year while earning Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. In the classroom, Wade also steps up his game. Carrying a 4.7 grade point average, Wade is in the top 5 percent of his graduating class. He served as a junior marshal and is a member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, the latter of which he served as president.

“Wade was the easy pick when you think about what he means to our program, not only as a great kid, but he is the true meaning of a student-athlete, and I could not be more proud of him,” Avery head baseball coach Samuel Phillips said. “Wade will be successful in whatever walk of life he chooses.” Wade has also given of his time to assist others, as he has worked as a volunteer coach for local football camps in 2013 and as a volunteer umpire for Avery County Little League in 2014.
