T
he fifth annual Best of Preps was held June 2 at the Watauga High School auditorium. The top student-athletes from Ashe, Avery and Watauga high schools were honored by their coaches, teammates, friends, teachers and parents. They were nominated by the coaches not just because of their achievements on the playing fields and courts, but because of their academics and contributions to their communities through volunteerism. A panel of three judges rated each student-athlete for their athletic achievement, their work in the classroom via their grade point averages and their involvement in the communities. After awards were given in
each sport that is offered in the tri-county area, awards for Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Women’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Community Excellence of the year, Comeback Student-Athlete of the Year and the Extra Mile Coach of the Year were given. Before the awards were given, former Beaver Creek, Watauga High School and Ashe County High School basketball coach and Athletic Director Marc Payne was the keynote speaker. He talked about the need to show leadership not just in athletics, but in every day life. The event was emceed by Avery Journal-Times Editor Jamie Shell. Photography was provided by Dawn Shumate.

T
h here is i very little li l that h Marc M Payne P has not experienced in his career as a prep coach and administrator. He has enjoyed a 43-year career as a basketball coach and athletic director at three different high schools. He started at Beaver Creek High School in Ashe County, moved to Watauga High School and then to Ashe High, where he retired. He finished with an overall record of 574-383. Payne is currently the commissioner of the Mountain Valley Conference. Payne’s message was that being a good leader means delivering effort and results as a participant not just in sports, but in life. Don’t just talk a good game, but produce a good product, be it a performance on the field, in the classroom or in life in general. “Under-promise and over-deliver,” Payne said. “Don’t talk about what you’re going to do. Prove in what you’re going to do in how you play.” He said it’s OK to start at the bottom when being on a team or in a company. The key is being willing to work to the top and not expect it to be given away. “So many young folks want to start as the CEO of a company and don’t want to work their way up,” Payne said. “You work your way up. Don’t be above the job.” Payne has worked his way to the top when it comes to being respected in the
i and d the h state off North N h Carolina. C li community Payne is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame and a member of the North Carolina Athletic Directors Hall of Fame. He was also selected for the George Whitfield Hall of Fame. All were in 2019. Payne read from one of his favorite books, “Training Camp,” by John Jordan. It talks about what it takes to be the best. “What the best do better than everybody else,” Payne read. “Now you are the best, you’re the best of preps — you must become the master of the ordinary. Do all the little things. The best of the best accomplish by doing ordinary things with extraordinary consistency and commitment and focus.” Payne did that by leading his teams to 13 regular-season conference championships and seven conference tournaments. He has also won 17 Coach of the Year Awards. He said working harder than the competition can lead to success on the field and in the workplace. “When you step out from your high school experience, your high school accolades, what you’ve accomplished, you’re back to ground zero because you’re moving on,” Payne said. “You’re moving on to college to study or you’re moving on to the workforce, but you’re starting from the ground up. What are you going to do with that opportunity?”

Comeback Award:
ELLIE KITCHIN BIO: Comeback Award Ellie Kitchin Avery High School Women’s tennis BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com
T
here are times when it is unfair to ask teenagers to face adult problems. Yet, Avery women’s tennis player Ellie Kitchin had no choice but to do that. Kitchin had to face a tough stretch in her life when her mother was diagnosed with cancer. As the eldest of three children in her family, Kitchen had to be strong for her two younger sisters and her father. Kitchin faced that when she was a sophomore at Avery. Instead of crumbling, Kitchin helped keep her family going and also threw herself into her school and community activities. Kitchin was the captain of the Vikings’ women’s tennis team in her junior and senior seasons. She was on the tennis team for all four years at Avery and also played women’s soccer her senior year and was on the girls’ track team when she was a sophomore. Off the field, her resume is loaded with school activities. She was the Student Body President her senior year and earned the Elite Viking Award, given to students who earn all A’s, in her sophomore, junior and senior years. She is a member of he National Technical Honor Society and earned a Gold U.S. Army Award for Scientific Research in 2016. She won a Silver U.S. Army Award for Scientific Research in 2018. Kitchin also had time to be a member of the Drama Club and is the president of the Key Club.

A
t first glance, it’s hard to understand that Faith Daniels had any time to give to anybody. Daniels was a middle hitter and an outside hitter on the Avery volleyball team and played on the front line of the Avery women’s basketball team. She spent her spring playing softball for the Vikings. Through all that, Daniels carried a 4.464 grade point average. She averaged 9.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for an Avery basketball team that finished 21-7 in the 2018-19 season and made it to the fourth round of the state 1-A playoffs. Yet Daniels found enough time to be the co-president of the Beta Club. Daniels also was the president of the Future Leaders of America, the Spanish Club and was a member of the Young and Government. Daniels was the treasurer of the Avery student body, a member of the National Honor Society and a member of the National Technical Honor Society. Daniels will serve as a Junior Marshal at the Avery graduation and earned the Elite Viking Award for getting all A’s from 2015-18. Daniels also trained in CPR, first aid, oxygen administration and led activities for groups of 6-25 children as a camp counselor at Williams YMCA.

yan Habich guided Watauga’s football team to Northwestern Conference championship and a 13-1 overall record. The Pioneers finished 11-0 during the regular season, 7-0 in the NWC and was the No. 1 seed for the western 3-AA state football playoffs bracket. The Pioneers reached the third round of the playoffs before falling to eventual state champion Weddington. It was Watauga’s first NWC championship since 2007 when the Pioneers won a co-championship. Watauga won its first outright conference championship since 1980. Habich, who completed his sixth season with the Pioneers, scored 87 touchdowns and averaged 352.8 rushing yards during the 2018 season. The Pioneers had to overcome the loss of starting quarterback Anderson Castle on the third play of the season, but still managed to win the six games he missed. Hard work, discipline and putting the team first are the cornerstones of Habich’s philosophy toward building winning football teams and turning players into young men.
