Pro football Hall of Fame Coach Vince Lombardi once said, “The secret to success is good leadership, and good leadership is all about making the lives of your team members or workers better.”
The 2024 Best of Preps winners are testimonies to the hard work these student-athletes have committed to make their teammates, schools and communities better while also excelling in the classroom.
This year, and for each year since 2015, Mountain Times Publications has recognized the best and brightest

student-athletes at Ashe, Avery and Watauga high schools not only for their success in their sport of choice, but for their successes in academics and in their respective communities.
Mountain Times Publications, which includes the Watauga Democrat, The Avery Journal-Times and The Ashe Post and Times, annually organizes this special edition to honor local studentathletes. Best of Preps recognizes student-athletes and coaches across more than 20 sports. In addition to each sports team, individual awards of Men’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Women’s Student-Athlete of the Year, Team of
the Year, the Perseverance Award, the Community Excellence Award and the Extra Mile Coach of the Year Award are recognized.
One athlete from each sport was nominated by that team’s coach from each school. A committee of judges worked to determine the best athletes from the nominees. While the athletic accomplishments are still greatly considered, the judges placed a higher regard for the work the student-athletes did in the classroom.
In addition to the accolades and celebration of our prep athletes, area
businesses in the community also sponsored each award. Special thanks to them, as well as to each school’s coaches, administrators and athletic directors for their assistance in providing information for their student-athletes utilized in this section.
From the classroom to the court, from the fields of competition to the service fields of our communities, this year’s group of student-athletes have stood out as the best among their peers and are worthy of celebration. Congratulations to each of this year’s Best of Preps winners, as well as the families, teams and schools they represent.

Cheuvront Meadow
Consistency is the key to success in many avenues of life. Whether it’s performing at an elite level in the athletic arena or earning top marks in the classroom, a commitment to excellence is essential.
Avery High School senior Meadow Cheuvront has exemplified both grace and tenacity as a member of Viking athletic teams, as well as a desire to be the best scholar possible.
As a leader on the school’s cross country team, she was a consistent performer, leading teammates and providing an example of total dedication to her craft. Academically, Meadow graduated among the top of her class, earning a 4.667 GPA, dividing her time between cross country meets and practices to fill her schedule with myriad extracurricular activities.
Cheuvront completed her senior year at Avery, having already earned an Associate’s Degree from Mayland Community College. She was a 20232024 US Presidential Scholar State semifinalist, earning scholarships from the SECU Foundation and BETA
National Leadership. Cheuvront was a Regional Science Olympiad Medalist from 2021-2024, with involvement in Regional Envirothon, Regional BETA Club Quiz Bowl, and a President’s List Scholar at Mayland CC, all while also earning her certification in wilderness first aid.
“She is familiar with working hard and excelling. Meadow worked hours on improving her 5K time,”
cross country coach April Cheuvront explained.
Meadow was also on the Viking swim team, with her swimming coach, Mike Jackson, echoing Meadow’s leadership within the squad.
“Meadow was our captain and led by example every step of the way. After a Friday night meet, Meadow was in the pool Saturday morning working on technique,” Jackson explained. “When our home pool’s boiler went out, Meadow met or brought her teammates to the Watauga pool to get laps…There is just no quit in Meadow Cheuvront.”
As was the case on the cross country course, Meadow’s view changed often as her success and passions led her to many opportunities as a student-athlete. A backpacker, climber and outdoor enthusiast, Meadow was an outdoor leader and guide for American Adventure Service Corps from 2016-2024, served as a group leader for climbing, belaying, backpacking, canoeing and general wilderness skills, even planning a 500-mile Yukon River trip’s camps, mileage and activities for a group of 10, venturing on the trek as a student guide and teacher on two separate occasions.
Cheuvront demonstrated total commitment to her athletic pursuits for the Vikings in her career, serving as captain of the cross country team for two years, and was an undisputed leader of the team through her spirit of teamwork, character and wit.

Pryor Jackson
Watauga’s Jackson Pryor capped off a stellar senior season and prep career with the 2024 Mountain Times Publications Best of Preps Male Athlete of the Year award.
Pryor earned the postseason honor as he excelled in two varsity sports and the boy’s volleyball.
On the basketball court, the senior averaged 12.4 points a game, 6.6 rebounds a game, 1 block per game, and 1 steal per game, and led the Pioneers in field-goal percentage at 60%.
Pryor, also ranked No. 10 in the program’s history all-time in rebounding, was also one of the leaders on Watauga’s first conference championship team since 1999.
Pryor was named to the alltournament team and also helped the Pioneers (22-6) win their first conference tournament since the 1970s.
“Jackson was a fierce and passionate competitor and a great leader,” said Watauga head boys basketball coach Bryson Payne. “He played a crucial role in our team’s success and did many things other than just score points and get rebounds. He was a team captain and leader and led both by example and vocally.”
Pryor was also one of the founding fathers of the Watauga boy’s volleyball club.
Starting in 2023, Pryor helped the Pioneers post winning seasons and qualify for the state tournament both

years with a combined record of 20-9.
Serving as team captain the past two seasons, the senior led the team in kills each season and holds the record for kills in a match with 39.
The gridiron was where Pryor really excelled as he helped the Watauga football team win its sixth-straight NWC 4A/3A championship and a trip to the third round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A playoffs.
A first-team all-conference selection at both wide receiver and outside
linebacker for the 12-1 Pioneers, Pryor led the team with 40 receptions for 790 yards and 12 touchdowns.
In addition to being all-conference on the field, Pryor was also named to the all-conference all-academic team with his 4.415 GPA and named the Pioneers Most Valuable Player, also known as the Golden Helmet. He was also an honorable mention recipient for offense for HighschoolOT’s 4A All-State team.
All of those accolades helped Pryor earn a full scholarship to play football for Division I Furman University.
“Jackson was an elite, multiplesport athlete who had a major role in helping the football and basketball teams win conference championships,” said Watauga football head coach Ryan Habich. “He excelled both on the football field and basketball court but was also a team captain and part of the football player Unity Council Leadership team. Maintaining a 4.0 GPA while being a multi-sport athlete is not easy, but Jackson excelled and earned a full-ride football scholarship and was a positive team leader on both teams.”

Bailey Mason PERSEVERANCE AWARD AVERY
Avery High School men’s basketball senior Mason Bailey has always had a special connection to the game of basketball, and that love helped him and his family as he endured heart surgery during his high school career, only to return to become a leader on the court for the Vikings during the 2023-24 school year.
Bailey, who was named All-Western Highlands Conference after the prep basketball season earlier this year, led the Avery Vikings in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per contest. Bailey also averaged 4.5 rebounds in his final season for the Big Red and more than an assist per contest over 23 total games.
“Mason is just a mismatch,” former Vikings boys varsity head coach Cody Frady said of Bailey. “He can handle the ball, and he can post as a big kid. He’s really had some good scoring games this year.”
Bailey’s on-court competitiveness was only matched by his likable demeanor off the floor, which was noticed by teammates and school officials alike.
“I can remember coming back my first day a couple of years ago, back to the high school, and Mason was one of the first kids to speak to me in the hall, and that’s the type of person he is,”
Avery High School Athletic Director Benny Wellborn said. “Mason’s a friendly and courteous student. As important as that is, he is a very hard worker... He loves basketball and eats,
sleeps and breathes the game, and has done so for a long time. To see all of his hard work and overcoming the obstacles he has had to overcome to get to this point is awesome. It couldn’t happen to a finer young man.”
Bailey has been an overcomer, refusing to let anything stifle his dream and love of the game. Both Mason and his younger brother Roman were born with a congenital heart defect. According to Mason’s mother, Chelsea, Mason’s issue was discovered when he was around seven years of age.
“We followed it for years and hoped that they would outgrow it,” Chelsea said. “Roman did not, and he had to have open heart surgery when he was 10. We then thought at least Mason would have outgrown it, and the summer between his freshman and sophomore year it turned out that he would also require open heart surgery.”
Mason’s surgical need arose as the global pandemic greatly impacted health care and all professions, compounding an already stressful period for him and his family.
“It wasn’t an easy thing to go through. Mason’s recovery was a lot different, and we looked forward to him being able to come back. He had sternal precautions for six weeks after surgery and could not touch a basketball or be around anyone until he had healed,” Chelsea said. “We came home on a Monday and he would have us roll a ball to him that he could softly shoot for around 15 minutes, just because that’s his whole driving
force. That’s where his peace comes from. He played basketball right up until he had to quarantine before surgery. He had the surgery, then went right back to basketball as soon as he could.”
Mason rebuilt his body and strength through weight training while also honing his game by developing his outside shot. His resilience paid off with the ability to return to the hardwood without missing any significant playing time.
“Basketball is just a game for many people, but for Mason, it’s his center and more than a driving force,” Chelsea said.
Testifying to his ability to bounce back, Mason used his complications as motivation to continue doing what he most enjoyed despite physical hurdles trying to limit his potential.
“Whenever you love something so much, you can’t let getting knocked down affect you. If you love something, you have to get up and keep moving; there’s no other choice,” Mason explained. “If I had stayed down from my heart surgery, I’d never be in the
position for this day to happen. It was that love that motivated me.”
“This day” that Mason referenced was the day in March when he signed a letter of intent to play basketball for Lees-McRae College, realizing his dream to play collegiate basketball.
“Basketball at the college level is what I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid. I immediately fell in love with the game. I played rec league ball at a very young age and just love the game,” Mason explained. “The high school level has been a fun experience. (Though) I ran into some difficulties with my heart and having surgery with some challenges to overcome. I’ve had a pretty good career.”

Micah
Duvall
Micah Duvall wore many hats as a student-athlete at Watauga High School.
With all of his accomplishments and accolades, both on and off the athletic field, he earned the 2024 Best of Preps Community Excellence Award from Mountain Times Publications.
Duvall excelled in both boys soccer and track and field.
On the track, Duvall earned AllNorthwestern 4A/3A Conference recognition while helping the Pioneers to their third-straight NWC championship.
The senior also performed well on the soccer pitch, recording four goals and assisting four others while earning first-team honors from the NWC and the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association. Duvall was an all-region selection to the 4A squad for Region 11.
Watauga finished 10-12-1 his senior season as the Pioneers garnered the top 4A seed from the conference and hosted a North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A playoff match.
According to Josh Honeycutt, the Pioneers’ head boys soccer coach, Duvall also lived up to his moniker as a team captain, especially at a low point in the season.
“Micah was given the opportunity to lead his team as captain his senior year. During a low point in the season, the team was separated and morale was very negative. Micah held a team

meeting and gave encouragement to his teammates — he overcame his own frustration and led his team humbly and with courage,” said Honeycutt. As the season continued, this single act of leadership was a very impactful reason for the end of the season’s success and reuniting the team.”
In addition to his athletic success, Duvall earned some impressive accolades off the field, such as earning congressional nominations from Congresswoman Virginia Foxx for West Point, the Naval Academy, and the Merchant Marine Academy. Duvall, who had a weighted
3.98 GPA in the classroom, also volunteered 70-plus hours of his time (and 60-plus hours with an internship) with the Watauga Medical Center and 16-plus hours at Deerfield Assisted Living. He also volunteers with the Alliance Bible Fellowship and Children’s Ministry.

Basketball Watauga High School Women’s TEAM OF THE YEAR
The Watauga High School women’s basketball team is the 2024 Mountain Times Publications Best of Preps Team of the Year.
The team went on a remarkable run in the 4A State Playoffs to the Final Four before they fell to Charlotte Catholic in a close game.
The Lady Pioneers shared the regular season title with Ashe County and won the Northwest 3A/4A Conference Tournament to earn the No. 1 seed in the western bracket of the 4A State Playoffs.
The playoff run brought the community together to support the team and their success. From local businesses donating food or other items to community members standing near U.S. 421 holding up a sign of support as they left for the Final Four game.
That community support mattered, especially as they turned out to Winston-Salem for the Final Four game against Charlotte Catholic in droves.
“Every time I looked up there, I felt like there were two or three more rows filled with students or parents or teachers or supporters,” thensenior Charlotte Torgerson said about the crowd at the Final Four game. “This doesn’t always happen for girls basketball, especially high school. It’s really special to make this historical run with some of my best friends with the best community in the world surrounding us. We’re very thankful

and proud to be part of Watauga.”
Seeing and feeling that support was huge for the team as they made their playoff run.
“It just gives you goosebumps when you come out on the floor, and they all cheer,” Coach Bill Torgerson said after the Final Four game. “I think it gives these kids an extra bit of energy when all of their classmates and the town are all here to cheer for them. I feel really blessed and thankful to be in
Watauga County in this community.”

Torgerson Bill COACH OF THE YEAR WATAUGA
First-year Watauga High School women’s varsity basketball head coach Bill Torgerson is the 2024 Mountain Times Publications Best of Preps Coach of the Year.
In his first year, Torgerson led the team to a shared regular season championship and a Northwest 3A/4A Conference Tournament Championship before making a deep run to the Final Four of the 4A State Playoffs.
The team ended the season with a 25-6 overall record and an 8-2 conference record.
Then-senior Diane McGlamery summed up Torgerson’s coaching after the team’s loss in the Final Four.
“It’s been really fun with our new head coach,” McGlamery said. “He’s made it a lot of work, but he’s also made it a lot of fun because he encourages us just to be together and play as one unit.”
The team averaged 60.3 points per game in the 2023-24 season, along with 14.7 assists per game and 29.1 rebounds per game.
While Torgerson had been an assistant coach with the team since 2020, he became head coach in September after Laura Barry stepped down to coach at Davidson College.
“We are certainly extremely fortunate to have young women in the women’s basketball program with high goals and an intense desire to be in the gym regularly,” Torgerson said when he was promoted to head coach. “I will do all that I can to try and
help support their goals and empower them in their pursuits both on and off the court.”
Despite being a first-year head coach for the varsity Lady Pioneers basketball team, he came in with a wealth of experience outside his time as an assistant coach with the team.

Torgerson’s team will have many familiar faces returning for the 202425 season, as the team only lost four players to graduation.

Meadow was a two-year captain of the Avery cross country team, leaving a lasting impact on her teammates over the course of her prep career.
Volunteer and Community Service: Outside the race course, Meadow remained active in myriad clubs and groups, placing for three years in the Regional Science Olympiad, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Mayland Community College approximately three weeks prior to receiving her high school diploma. Meadow is a skilled climber, backpacker, hiker and outdoor enthusiast.
Coach’s Comments: “Meadow has given her entire heart and soul to the sport for the past four years. Meadow dedicates her time and talents to activities that will better her community. She excels in the classroom as a leader of not only her graduates of high school, but as a graduate of the community college Meadow ended her cross country career with never winning a race or being the ‘fastest’ runner on the team. Her value was far above a rank in the record books. It was found in the love amongst her teammates for her leadership, character and wit.” — Avery Women’s Cross Country Coach April Cheuvront

Asher
Hartzog
Weighted GPA: 4.42
Achievements and Awards: The undisputed leader of the Avery Vikings defense in the 2023 season was senior lineman/linebacker Asher Hartzog. Overcoming an injured wrist in the 2021 season, Hartzog battled his way to rehabilitate his body and returned to the gridiron with a vengeance, completing his senior campaign as a leading tackler in Western North Carolina, regardless of classification. Hartzog was a two-time All-Western Highlands Conference performer and four-year varsity letterman, emerging as the team’s 2022 Defensive Player of the Year and 2023 Avery Team MVP while serving as a team captain. Hartzog was one of only two WNC players to be selected to participate in the 2024 Blue/Gray All-American Game played at the home of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in Texas. In that game, Hartzog recorded six tackles, a quarterback sack and an interception for his club. He was a junior marshal and finished as a topfive ranked student in his graduating class, with plans on attending trade school to continue his education.
Volunteer and Community Service: Hartzog’s character is on display off the field as well through participation in his church and youth group, was a highly ranked member of the Avery High JROTC program, worked with EC students at ACHS, as well as was involved in student government and Fellowship

of Christian Athletes. He was also a member of the School Improvement Team.
Coach’s Comments: “Asher is an actual leader who has worked extremely hard all four years of his high school career. He has overcome
a lot in his four years at Avery. He had broken his wrist and couldn’t lift, and was dismissed by some of his coaches, but he worked extremely hard to get back on the field. Asher has accomplished a lot for himself, for our football program, and for Avery County. He is an outstanding kid
all the way around, and kids look up to him. He’ll be a leader his entire life and continue to do great things.”

Achievements and Awards: Whether it’s playing 18 grueling holes of golf in the heat of the late spring or providing a spark as a Viking basketball player, Avery High School sophomore Hank Johnson has little trouble finding ways to sink a ball into a golf hole or a hoops basket. Avery High School
Weighted GPA: 4.41
Achievements and Awards: Avery High School senior Lillie Ward experienced her fair share of success on the track during her prep career, finishing the 2024 outdoor track and field season with a state championship as a member of the Avery 4x400-meter relay team while placing third overall in the 4x200-meter relay event. Lillie was a national track and field qualifier and captured NCHSAA 1A Western Regional championships on two separate occasions. Ward was a four-time All-Western Highlands Conference performer on the track, serving four years as ACHS Team Leader, and was named Avery High School MVP three times.
Volunteer and Community Service: Ward served as a member of the Beta Club, was a member of the Ski/Snowboard Club, volunteered with packing shoeboxes with Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Child and served as a volunteer with the Crossnore Elementary School Spring Fling and Fall Fling events.
Coach’s Comments: “Lillie has been that powerful machine that has been the key to this team’s success over the past four years. Her hard work is always an example of what it takes to set a goal, go after it and do your best at every step of the way. Crossing that finish line after each race (usually in first position), she was always seen congratulating and shaking the hands of the other competitors. She has always demonstrated the true meaning of good sportsmanship and team spirit as a true leader. Looks are deceiving with this one. She is a little bit of a thing but with some powerful, strong legs! Her speed sure made up for her size and she showed everyone not to judge a book by its cover!” — Track and Field Coach Cary Dominguez Finalists: Abilene Dollar (Ashe) and Sadie Buchanan (Watauga)
