Boone: The Heart of the High Country COMPILED BY ANNA OAKES anna@mountiantimes.com
Framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the town of Boone anchors the High Country as the region’s economic center, the home of one of the largest state universities in the University of North Carolina system and the site of diverse cultural activities. The town of Boone was incorporated in 1872, acquiring its name from the famous pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, who hunted and camped in the area. According to recent Census estimates, the population of Boone was 18,089, an increase of 3.8 percent from the 2010 Census. Boone has the highest elevation (3,300 feet) of any town of its size (greater than 10,000 population) east of the Mississippi River. Boone serves as the county seat of Watauga County, and town limits cover approximately six square miles. Travelers access Boone via U.S. 421, U.S. 321 and U.S. 221, which provide access to Interstates 40, 77, 85, 81 and 26. Also nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic mountain road that traverses 469 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. Free transportation around town is provided by the AppalCART transit service,

work to make the area more walkable and bikeable, including efforts to add more sidewalks and bike lanes. A couple of electric car charging stations are located in town, as well. Located off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone’s location and climate contribute to a strong tourism base and provide yearround opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor activities that include skiing, hiking, boating, camping, biking and fishing. The town is also home to Appalachian State University, which currently has approximately 18,000 students, the Appalachian Regional Medical Center and a variety of tourist and cultural attractions and businesses, which increase the town’s population to an estimated 35,000 on a daily basis. Boone residents enjoy health care services provided through the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System. Watauga Medical Center is a 117-bed regional medical complex, offering both primary and secondary acute and specialty care. The campus includes the main hospital and centers devoted to care of cancer, sleep disorders, cardiology problems and wound care. Other facilities include a Wellness Center, Rehabilitation Center, Appalachian Regional Pain Clinic and a branch of the
Northwest Area Health Education Center. Town residents also have access to the Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital, a 25-bed acute care hospital with a 10-bed inpatient behavioral health care unit located about 20 miles from Boone in Linville. In addition, a new post-acute care and rehabilitation center is planned in nearby Blowing Rock. Boone is also the home of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization. The town and Watauga County generate an estimated $210.99 million in joint tourism revenue annually, according to 2012 figures. Downtown Boone is a colorful amalgamation of storied history, university town culture, mountain and local arts and independent merchants, with diverse businesses, restaurants, shops and boutiques. The “buy local” movement is strong in Boone, with a vibrant weekly farmers’ market, multiple restaurants offering “farm to table” dishes and locally sourced ingredients, an independent grocery store and many more opportunities to keep your dollars in the community. Farming and agriculture are important to Watauga County, with Christmas trees, cattle, nursery products and vegetables as the top commodities.

The most scenic buyers’ market in the Carolinas With thousands of listings, as well as home prices and interest rates that remain lower than pre-recession levels, the High Country residential real estate market is a scenic sight for buyers. Despite steady growth in the real estate market, median home sale prices in Watauga, Ashe and Avery counties remain lower than they were in 2007, according to the High Country Association of Realtors. The median home price in the threecounty area in August 2014 was $188,500 — which is 17 percent lower than the $230,000 median price in October 2007, the association said. For the year, High Country realtors reported a median sales price of $182,500, a 6 percent decline from last year’s $194,500 sales mark through the same eight-month span, the association said. “The prices are attracting buyers,” the association said. “Realtors have sold 836 homes so far this year, slightly outpacing the 818 sold through August of 2013.” The High Country market also boasts plenty of variety, with 3,255 listings in the Multiple Listing Service system as of Sept. 14, 2014. “That’s where a local realtor can really help,” said Laurie Phillips, executive officer of High Country Association of Realtors. “Their knowledge of the local market, experience and negotiating skills can be a

huge benefit to both buyers and sellers.” In October 2014, borrowing costs sank to the lowest amounts in more than a year as the 30-year fixed rate mortgage averaged 3.97 percent, Freddie Mac reported.
The rate was the lowest average since the week of June 20, 2013, when it averaged 3.93 percent. “Mortgage rates were down sharply following the decline in the 10-year Treasury
yield for the second straight week,” says Frank Nothaft, Freddie Mac’s chief economist. According to the Washington Post, Freddie Mac had projected that the average 30-year rate would rise to 5.1 percent by year’s end, but has since pulled back its projection to 4.3 percent. “Interest rates are lower than they were a year ago, price growth continues to moderate and total housing inventory is at its highest level since August 2012,” said Lawrence Yun, National Association of Realtors chief economist. “The increase in the number of new and existing homes for sale is creating less competition and is giving prospective buyers more time to review their options before submitting an offer.” The benefits of living near Appalachian State University, Caldwell Community College and Lees-McRae College, top quality school and health care systems, proximity to multiple year-round outdoor recreation opportunities and a short drive to major cities and thoroughfares are all factors that make High Country properties great investments for now and in the future. For more information about High Country properties, check out the classifieds sections in the Watauga Democrat and The Mountain Times or visit www. highcountryrealtors.org.

BOONE: A shopper’s paradise BY SHERRIE NORRIS sherrie.norris@wataugademocrat.com
Boone is a place that generations have called home. It has also been a longtime destination for rest, relaxation and celebrating special occasions. It also is the idyllic setting visited by countless people from all over the world each year, many of whom love leaving town with unique gifts and memorabilia — and often, those that reflect our mountain heritage. Whether searching for one-of-a-kind clothing items and accessories, handmade jewelry, crafts, or a number of other specialty items on their list — or even more commercialized goods at great prices — consumers rarely leave Boone without armloads of bags overflowing with newly discovered treasures. Not only is Boone a shopper’s paradise for visitors, but also for full-time residents, as well, who know they can find nearly everything they need just around the next corner. Whether you’re looking for items with a hometown label or those with internationally recognized slogans, Boone offers a plethora of shopping opportunities for the entire family. This quaint mountain town, attracting visitors from around the country and beyond on a regular basis, offers a shopping experience as diverse as those found in most metropolitan areas.
Enjoyable shopping While known for its small college town charm, Boone’s great appeal is accentuated by specialty shops and boutiques for every age and taste, an historic general mercantile, and more, including dozens of eateries that provide a restful stopover and delightful dining experi-
ence for the weary shoppers when they can’t walk another step. The town also boasts the presence of a spacious and climate-controlled indoor mall featuring everything from easily recognizable anchor stores to intimate wedding and formal wear shops, as well as those focusing on electronics, cosmetics, shoes, cards and gifts, sporting goods, seasonal goods (at center court kiosks) and much more. Looking for the largescale retail chain stores? You will find at least three of those in Boone, too. And, there is certainly no shortage of food stores, specialty markets and quick stops. Whether you’ve decided to replace the family vehicle, pick out a pet for the kids, or downsize from your three-story family home and find a smaller, easier accessible residence, look no further. Many people might not consider home buying as shopping, exactly, but it is — and there is no better place to look for your next residence than in the Boone area, be it the traditional stick-built or manufactured home.
Special items What about designer fashions, work clothes, a new refrigerator or a bed? You can find what you need in the heart of Boone without driving off the mountain. It’s a short distance, as well, to find new or used furniture, toys, antiques and musical instruments, and someone to help you learn to play them. Need to replenish your art and craft supplies, buy fresh-baked goods for the office party, flower arrangements, bikes, auto parts and medication? Look no further. How about those cowboy boots, snow chains, art and home décor, lawn mowers,

building and/or plumbing supplies? Boone has it all.
Browsing For those who love browsing through gently used clothing and collectibles — the news is good: consignment shops, thrift stores and galleries are abundant in Boone. Several new ones have opened just this year, some privately owned, as well as those benefitting local nonprofit organizations. Planning a party, a wedding or another reason to celebrate? Why go anywhere else? Not only are you able to find the invitations that can be personally engraved and formal bridal attire in Boone, including the dresses, the tuxedoes and footwear for all the attendants, but also your bouquets and altar flowers, candelabras, and everything you need for the ceremony and reception — whether as a purchase or rental. And don’t forget the wedding experts who will offer
their expertise when you start “shopping” for ideas and advice. Local hair and beauty salons carry full lines of name brand products, in addition to providing hair care and nail and beauty treatments. Downtown Boone also has the largest antique mall for miles around, with three floors and 15,000 square feet of antiques and collectibles.

Let Us Make Your Dreams Come True...
Unpredictable but usually pleasant BY SHERRIE NORRIS sherrie.norris@wataugademocrat.com
It’s long been a lively topic of conversation in the office break room and it’s likely to change from one day to the next, or maybe even from one hour to the next. Boone weather usually doesn’t stay the same for long periods of time. It’s not mountain folklore — it’s a fact. Ask anyone who has lived in the area for a little while about the weather patterns around town and you will surely hear the old adage: “If you don’t like the weather, just hang around for five minutes and it will change.” At just around 3,300 feet in elevation — the highest elevation of any town with a population of more than 10,000 east of the Mississippi River — Boone is known as the “perfect place” to visit and to live. For decades, countless people have been attracted to Boone as if it were a magnet, and once here, they can’t seem to pull themselves away. Many who pass through, or choose Boone as a vacation destination, often decide to stay forever. Among top reasons given for moving here include the distinction between each seasons and the climate, in general. It’s rarely too hot, although it can be too cold, but for most people, it’s just right. With summer temperatures averaging in the mid to high 70s, Boone has become a destination for many reasons — from weddings to outdoor festivals, shop-

ping, eating and sporting opportunities, including golfing, swimming, fishing, mountain biking, canoeing, rafting and rock climbing. Typically, the more comfortable months — between April and November — find the roads leading to Boone filled with cars representing many states and in particular, Florida. Many retirees love escaping the heat of the Deep South for the restful clime of Boone. A little rain with moderating temperatures is often expected, and welcomed, in the spring and again in the fall. Nature usually provides its own spectacular fireworks display with occasional storms set off by short-lived humidity during the heat of summer. Autumn often brings with it an amazing foliage presentation of color with “leaf lookers” crowding the scenic roadways in and near Boone, namely the Blue Ridge Parkway. And, there are those occasional — and almost shocking — weather alerts for Boone anyway, as in the spring and summer, mild earthquake activity was reported; and in October, tornado warnings, damaging winds and possible flooding were highlighted on the radar screens. Historically known for winter snows that have inched up to several feet at a time, Boone is also a prime spot for skiers and snowboarders, with an average temperature of around 40 degrees. So, whatever the weather, Boone is a great place to be at any time of the year.
• The Southern Appalachian Historical Association and the town of Boone will present the Boone Heritage Festival at the Horn in the West grounds. • The 37th annual Valle Country Fair will be held off N.C. 194 in Valle Crucis. • Blowing Rock will host its annual Halloween Festival in downtown Blowing Rock.

Entertainment: BY ERIKA GIOVANETTI erika@mountaintimes.com
College towns all over the country are famous for an active nightlife, and while Boone is no exception to this rule, our little mountain town sets itself apart from the rest with cultural traditions, a lively music scene and neighborly people. Much of Boone’s entertainment does center on ASU and its programs, but there is also a plethora of amusement otherwise in Boone ranging from late-night bar scenes to yearly and monthly celebrations.
Music and entertainment venues at ASU
The Schaefer Center When it comes to on-campus venues, the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts is certainly the largest at 1,684 seats, according to its website. Due to its size, it’s often host to the largest concerts that come to Boone, and it is host to the 2014-2015 Performing Art Series. • Nov. 11 — LA Theatre Works, $10 for students and $20 for nonstudents. For more information, visit www.theschaefercenter.org. Legends When walking into Legends, one may find old posters of acts such as Coolio, John Mayer and Jimmy Fallon scattered upon the walls. Legends has been host to acts large and small, with many of the A-list artists hitting the modest venue before they made it big. Legends is open to ASU students and anyone with a valid ID. Upcoming events: • Oct. 31 — Yo Momma’s Big Fat Booty Band, $8 in advance for students and $12 at door for students/non-students • Nov. 17 — Hunter Hunted, $8 in advance for students and $12 at door for students/non-students For more information, visit http://legends.appstate.edu. Education is a top priority in Watauga County BY JESSE CAMPBELL jesse.campbell@mountaintimes.com
With an ever-expanding four-year university and one of the state’s top school systems in terms of testing, it goes without saying that education is a pillar to the communities of the High Country. The Watauga County school system, which is also one of the top employers in the county, is at forefront of education in Boone and the outlaying communities. Every morning, thousands of students, educators, administrators and support staff make their way to one of eight K-8 schools or the county’s lone consolidated high school. From an infrastructure standpoint,
Watauga County is dedicated to offering the best facilities it possibly can to provide an environment conducive to learning and developing socially. The school system debuted a new stateof-the-art high school across town near Perkinsville in 2010 and continues to be celebrated as one of the top facilities in the region and state. Elected officials and school administrators are also dedicated to maintaining current facilities, which is apparent through its continued usage of state lottery funds — in the place of dipping into the county’s rainy day fund — and allocating any other possible resources to keep buildings in SEE EDUCATION, PAGE 24

prime condition. The most valuable components of the school system, however, are the thousands of students who make the school system one of the best in the state. Recently, high school seniors were recognized as producing the second best SAT scores and fourth best marks in the ACT statewide. The high school also routinely finishes in the Top 10 regionally for its four-year cohort graduation rate. The results of a high producing school system are not limited to secondary grades as pupils in the school system’s elementary schools continue to reset the bar and rewrite the definition of success in Watauga County. Early in the 2014 school year, educators noted that 46 percent of third-grade students are where they need to be at by the end of the grade level in June. A continued rewarding relationship with Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute allows for student growth across a broad swath of disciplines, officials said. School system personnel also contribute to the continued growth of one of the region’s top systems. Educators and support staff are recognized on a regular basis by the system for their work in the classroom, as well as making sure the school system is a welloiled and efficient teaching machine. A change in leadership this summer also brought a breath of fresh air to the school system. Scott Elliott took over as superintendent of county schools this summer. He said he is committed to continuing the successes of the school system and strengthening its relationships with community it serves. “The most exciting thing to me is there is a general sense all across the community that the community loves the schools and takes ownerships of the schools,” Elliott said. “It makes me proud that others are so
proud of schools.” He also said the school system is appreciative of the support it receives from all sectors of the community. “Our county and county commissioners have been very generous with our schools,” he said. “We wouldn’t be in the position we are in without their support.” From spelling bee winners, teacher of the year recipients to the support staff who were recognized nationally in making the school system one of the top energy conscientious systems in the nation, Watauga County Schools are committed to excellence at every level.
The Appalachian experience Since brothers Blanford B. Dougherty and Dauphin D. Dougherty founded Watauga Academy in 1899, which has grown into Appalachian State University, Appalachian has undergone several changes and namesakes that have led it to its place as one of the top universities in not only in the region, but also the country, too. Currently, the university enrolls around 18,000 students and offers more than 150 undergraduate and graduate majors. ASU is also home to some of the brightest minds in the country. According to the university, the average incoming freshman grade point average is above a 4.0, and small class sizes make it a comfortable fit for students looking to reach the next level of their educational careers. Appalachian’s successes have been well touted at the national level, as well. The university was most recently recognized in the U.S. News and World Report’s 2015 America’s Best Colleges Guide and the campus made its way on to Forbes’ list of America’s top colleges and best buys. Appalachian’s successes are not limited to the classroom, however, as the university has one of the more well-known athletic programs in the region. On the gridiron, the Mountaineers have won three national championships at the subdivision level and captured numerous conference championships. Most recently, the Mountaineers completed a move to college athletics’ top tier as a member of the Sun Belt Conference.

BLACK AND GOLD:
Changes in the heart of Boone BY ERIKA GIOVANETTI erika@mountaintimes.com
2014 has been a year of change for Appalachian State University. With a new chancellor, a new football conference and new names for buildings, 2014 is the year of “new.” However, with all these new transitions comes the passing of old legacies. In the past year, ASU has said good-bye to Chancellor Kenneth Peacock, the Southern Conference and Winkler Hall. This year, ASU has also seen projected tuition increases and record-setting enrollment, both anticipated changes in terms of the university’s growth. One thing that is always consistent, however, is ASU’s high placement in U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges rankings. ASU ranked No. 3 among public universities in the South and No. 9 in public and private universities in the South. Since the rankings were first published in 1986, ASU has been placed among the Top 15 public and private universities, according to a news release from the university.
ASU’s new chancellor
On July 1, ASU welcomed Chancellor Sheri N. Everts, who is the first woman to serve as chancellor in the school’s 115-year history. Everts comes from Illinois State University, where she served as provost and vice president for academic affairs. She is the university’s seventh chancellor. In an August interview with the Watauga Democrat, Everts said that she is adjusting to her new position, finding out ASU’s strengths and challenges from students, staff and faculty alike. “Don’t lose that focus on student success — I’ve heard that as much from faculty as I have from anyone else,” Everts said. Everts said she has received input from community members via email and letters and has even been stopped on the street by people who want to share their opinions and concerns about ASU. As she continues to determine ASU’s greatest challenges, one concern that Everts has heard repeatedly is the lack of diversity among students and staff. “Increasing the diversity of our faculty, staff and student populations — that’s probably one that I’m hearing about
often,” Everts said. “That wasn’t a surprise to me — I looked at those numbers when I came to Appalachian.” Everts said that the Boone community has been “marvelously welcoming,” which comes as no surprise – previous Chancellor Kenneth Peacock was a celebrity among students and community members alike.
ONE STOP AND YOUR PETS WILL BE DREAMING ABOUT THE PET PLACE!
Enrollment increase In late September, ASU announced in a news release that enrollment broke the 18,000 mark, with preliminary data indicating that 18,026 students are enrolled for the fall semester, amounting to more than 200 students than last fall. Susan Davies, associate chancellor for enrollment management, said in the announcement that the freshman-to-sophomore retention rate is about 88 percent. A high retention rate can affect enrollment data. “This shows we continue to recruit students who can be successful at Appalachian, and once they arrive on campus they find our academics and co-curricular experiences encourage them to stay and graduate,” Davies said. ASU athletics On the same day that Everts officially began her role as chancellor, another big change took place at ASU: the Mountaineers left the Southern Conference in favor for a move to the Sun Belt Conference. The Sun Belt opens up new opportunities for the Mountaineers as it offers Football Bowl Subdivision football. The FBS is the new term for Division I-A football. However, it’s not only ASU’s football team that moved up to the Sun Belt. The majority of its sports teams compete in the Sun Belt. ASU’s first game in the Sun Belt Conference was a rematch with Michigan on Aug. 30, losing this time 52-14 and won its first Sun Belt Conference game 53-14 at Troy (Ala.) on Oct. 18. The ASU football program gained nationwide recognition upon beating Michigan, which was ranked No. 5 in the Associated Press poll at the time 34-32 in 2007. It is considered one of the biggest upsets in college football history. Appalachian State’s longtime SoCon rival Georgia Southern also joined the Sun Belt this past year.

HEART FROM PAGE 30 On June 1, Winkler Residence Hall was demolished due to the high cost of renovations. ASU officials said that the site will be surveyed as a potential location for a new residence hall. The site of the former residence hall now provides temporary green space, according to the university.
Future tuition increases
Due to the UNC system leaders asking campuses to freeze tuition costs this year, most ASU students saw no increase on their tuition bill for the 2014-2015 year — however, out-of-state undergraduate students saw a 6 percent increase in tuition and fees. This fall, ASU leaders will convene to consider potential tuition and fee increases for the next two years, which are capped at 5 percent for in-state undergrads. The tuition cap does not apply to outof-state and graduate students. This is a typical step for ASU’s tuition and fee committees, which make recommendations to the chancellor for the next year’s rates. The chancellor may then make recommendations, and the board of trustees can approve the adjustments in December. The proposals are then passed to the UNC system president and Board of Governors for consideration and approval. Since 2006, the UNC system Board of Governors has developed four-year tuition and fee plans. The current plan, which was approved in 2010, states that tuition and fee increases are not to exceed 6.5 percent. Tuition and fee rates will be set on a
two-year basis, with rates to be set for 2015-16 and 2016-17 and then again for 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Renaming campus buildings Although it has not been very long since Welborn Dining Hall was renamed Central Dining Hall, the building was officially renamed again in March to Roess Dining Hall, honoring a member of the ASU board of trustees, Alice Roess. Roess, a Blowing Rock resident, has served on the board for the past five years and has three years left on her term. “I am simply crazy about ASU and its students,” Roess told the Watauga Democrat in March. “They picked a great building for me, because it is such a center of student socializing.” Also renamed this year was the CAP building, now named after the late John A. Garwood, an Appalachian graduate and former member of the UNC Board of Governors and the ASU board of rrustees, according to the university. “Throughout his whole career in public service, he always had education at the forefront of his mind, particularly ASU,” his son, John. B Garwood, said during the dedication ceremony. Garwood also played football at Appalachian for two years before being drafted to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, according to the university.

APPALACHIAN STATE ATHLETICS: A big step in 2014 BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com
Appalachian State’s athletic department took a big step in 2014. It went to a new conference. Appalachian State joined the Sun Belt Conference on July 1, 2014. The Mountaineers, who played Division I athletics as a member of the Southern Conference, played in the Football Championship Subdivision. As a member of the Sun Belt, the Mountaineers now play Football Bowl Subdivision football. That means more scholarships to hand out. FCS teams have 63 scholarshipped players. The FBS allows for 85. It also means a group of new teams will be playing in Boone in the future. Appalachian State’s football team will host Wyoming on Oct. 4, 2015, and host Southern Mississippi in 2018. The Mountaineers’ football team had winning seasons in 23 out of 24 seasons under former head coach Jerry Moore. The Mountaineers slipped to 4-8 in 2013, but won three of their last five games. In their first season in the Sun Belt Conference, the Mountaineers got off to a 1-5 start. The results for the rest of the season were not available by presstime. Football is not the only area of the athletic department that has undergone change. Former athletic director Charlie Cobb left to take the same post at Georgia State in August. The current athletic director is Rick Beasley, but it is on an interim basis. A national search is being held for a new athletic director, but a new AD was not found as of presstime. Other changes were made in the men’s and women’s basketball pro-

grams. Appalachian State hired new coach Jim Fox to replace Jason Capel, whose contract was not renewed at the end of the Southern Conference Tournament. Fox comes to Appalachian State from SoCon rival Davidson. The Mountaineers open their season Nov. 6 in an exhibition game at home at the Holmes Center against Division II LeesMcRae College, which is located in nearby Banner Elk. The Mountaineers’ first home regular season game is Nov. 15 at Ohio. Their first home game is Nov. 24 against Hampton. Men’s basketball season tickets are $75 for adults, $50 for youth ages 3 to 12. Single game tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for youth. The women’s basketball team also has a new head coach in Angel Elderkin. She replaces Darcie Vincent, who resigned after six years in charge of the program. The women’s team starts the Elderkin era beginning with an exhibition game against Lees-McRae on Nov. 8 at the Holmes Center. App State opens its regular season Nov. 14 at Kentucky, and plays
its first regular season at home game against UNC Wilmington on Nov. 22. Single game tickets for women’s games that are not included in a doubleheader with the men’s team is $5 for adults, $3 for youth ages 3 to 12. On days when the men’s and women’s teams play a doubleheader, the ticket price is $10 for adults, $5 for youth. The other sport that Appalachian State charges admission for is baseball. The baseball team plays in
Smith Stadium, which is located behind the Broyhill Inn. The Mountaineers open their season on Feb. 13 in the N.C. State tournament. Appalachian State hosts Canisius for a three game series from Feb. 20 to Feb. 22. The Mountaineers also will host Wake Forest on March 24 and LouisianaLafayette on May 1-3. UL Lafayette was ranked No. 1 in the country for a time during the 2013 season, and was a game away from

playing in the College World Series. Ticket prices for the 2015 season have not been set. They were $10 for adults and $5 for youth during the 2014 season. Tickets can be purchased by calling (828) 262-2079, or online at www.appstatesports.com. They are also available at the Appalachian State ticket office located at the Holmes Center at the corner or Rivers Street and Blowing Rock Road. Appalachian State
hosts 18 sports overall, nine men’s sports and nine women’s sports. The men’s sports include football, basketball, baseball, cross-country, golf, soccer, tennis, track and field and wrestling. The Mountaineers also have an indoor track team. The women’s sports include basketball, crosscountry, golf, field hockey, soccer, tennis, softball, volleyball and track and field. App State also has a women’s indoor track team.

Bite into Boone Restaurants in the High Country
COMPILED BY FRANK RUGGIERO frank@mountaintimes.com For its small-town atmosphere, Boone is all about variety. This is made all the more evident with one simple question: “Where should we eat?” From down-home country cooking at the Dan’l Boone Inn to wellspiced curries at Cha Da Thai to criminally tasty pizza at Capone’s, Boone has your palette covered. Dan Meyer, president of the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, puts it best. “Something for everyone,” he said, “and second to none. But, of course, like others who call the High Country home, we are a little prejudiced.”

The venue also boasts live music Friday and Saturday nights.
