BOONE: My hometown

elcome to Boone, my hometown. Did you know that Boone’s elevation of 3,300 feet above sea level makes it the highest town for its size east of the Mississippi River? It is also one of the friendliest and most caring communities that I have ever experienced, filled with programs and organizations, and people who make Boone a very special place. My wife, Lana, and I have lived in Boone since 1973. Much has changed during this time. Our downtown is more vibrant and attractive, with first-rate restaurants, interesting shops, and notable historic sites such as our Jones House Community Center and historic post office. In the evenings, you can now find varied musical entertainment, ranging from “old-time” mountain music at the Jones House on Thursday evenings to jazz and other musical styles at numerous downtown venues. Many visitors pause for a moment downtown to admire the recently dedicated Doc Watson sculpture honoring one of our musical legends. Elsewhere in Boone you will find many citizens visiting the farmers’ market on Saturdays during the summer and fall. For five weeks in the summer, Boone’s Southern Appalachian Historical Association presents the “Horn in the West,” the second oldest outdoor historical drama in the U.S. And throughout the year, there are downtown celebrations from Christmas parades to our Halloween “Boo.” Appalachian State University has grown significantly in the last 43 years, adding enormously to our community with its wide range of cultural, intellectual and sporting events for the entire community. The 18,000-plus students add energy, enthusiasm and considerable public service in our community. As a retired professor of history at Appalachian, I have come to value the outstanding students, faculty and staff at our fine university. Our schools, efficient municipal government and beautiful greenways and parks also contribute to the unique charm of Boone. Visitors and residents take advantage of the nearby Blue Ridge Parkway, the Daniel Boone Native Gardens and Tweetsie Railroad. Boone is a special place, whether you are hiking or rafting in the summer or skiing in the winter. And you can always count on help from friendly people in Boone if you get lost or can’t find your destination. Information is always available from the professional staff at the Town Hall at 567 West King St. or the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce at 870 West King St., Suite A. Welcome to Boone: the High Country’s regional economic center, the home of Appalachian State University, a nationally recognized outdoor recreation destination and North Carolina’s premier mountain town. The town of Boone was incorporated in 1872, acquiring its name from the famous pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, who hunted and camped in the area. According to recent Census estimates,

Boone has the highest elevation (3,300 feet) of any town of its size (greater than 10,000 population) east of the Mississippi River. It serves as the county seat of Watauga County, and town limits cover approximately six square miles. Travelers access Boone via U.S. 421, U.S. 321 and U.S. 221, which provide access to interstates 40, 77, 85, 81 and 26. Also nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic mountain road and national park that traverses 469 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. One of the town’s greatest amenities is the AppalCART transit service, which provides free transportation around town, with additional routes in the county available for a small fee. Town and regional leaders continue work to make the area more walkable and bikeable, including eﬀorts to add more sidewalks and bike lanes. Several electric car charging stations are located in town, including at private businesses, at Appalachian State and in downtown Boone. Boone’s location and climate contribute to a strong tourism base and provide year-round opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor activities that include skiing, hiking, boating, camping, biking, climbing and fishing. Appalachian State University is one of the largest universities in the public University of North Carolina system with nearly 18,000 students. The university, along with visitors to the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System

and a variety of tourist and cultural attractions and businesses, increase the town’s population to an estimated 35,000 on a daily basis. Boone residents enjoy health care services provided through the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System. Watauga Medical Center is a 117-bed regional medical complex, oﬀering both primary and secondary acute and specialty care. The campus includes the main hospital and centers devoted to care of cancer, sleep disorders, cardiology problems and wound care. Other facilities include a Wellness Center, Rehabilitation Center and a new post-acute care and rehabilitation center is a new addition in nearby Blowing Rock. Boone is also the home of Samaritan’s Purse, an international Christian relief organization. Multiple neighborhoods are within walking distance of downtown Boone, which oﬀers a vibrant mix of local history, college town culture, mountain heritage and arts, as well as commerce, with diverse businesses, restaurants, shops and boutiques.

The institution is divided into seven undergraduate colleges and a graduate school oﬀering more than 150 majors. ASU regularly places high in the U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges rankings. More than 120,000 Mountaineer alumni currently reside in all 50 states and several foreign countries.

Economic impact

ASU is the largest employer in Watauga County, with about 3,000 employees. The campus is an economic engine for the county, region and the state. An analysis by Economic Modeling Specialists International concluded that in fiscal year 2012-13, the $355.3 million in payroll and operations spending of ASU, together with its construction spending and the spending of its students, visitors and alumni, created $1.7 billion in added state income. “This is equal to approximately 0.4 percent of the total gross state product of North Carolina and is equivalent to creating 28,035 new jobs,” the analysis stated.

Lifelong learning & community outreach Living in a town with such a large institution of higher learning has its advantages,

including lectures, readings, forums and other educational events that are open to the public — and often free. These include the University Forum Lecture Series, Hughlene Bostian Frank Visiting Writers Series, Diversity Celebration and numerous timely and informative events organized by faculty and students throughout the year. Community members can use Appalachian State’s 200,000-square-foot library and can even check out materials with a community library card. High Country’s economic engine BY GARRETT PRICE Home to sustained growth in tourism, second homes, relocation and a large student population, Boone’s economy stands

out among its neighbors as one of the best economically developed towns in Western North Carolina. Watauga County was one of the only in northwest N.C. to experience population

growth in 2015, according to estimates from the U.S. Census. While other nearby counties saw slight declines, Watauga’s population increased 1 percent. The county also experienced a higher

The county’s largest employer, Appalachian State University is also one of the area’s largest economic driving forces with more than 3,000 employees. Home to more than 18,000 students, the university doubles the population of Boone each semester as classes begin. The school is almost continually growing, most recently acquiring property to begin construction on a new home for the Beaver College of Health Sciences. App State also has a positive contribution on workforce education. According to Census data, 48 percent of Boone residents have a bachelor’s degree, and 88 percent have graduated high school. Tourism dollars also play a large part in the prosperity of Watauga County. Ac-

cording to the most recent data available from the N.C. Department of Commerce, the county claimed tourist impacts of more than $216 million in 2013 — a figure that has more than doubled since the first available data in 1991. In 2013, Watauga ranked 18th in highest travel impact among N.C.’s 100 counties. The health sector accounts for a large portion of Watauga County’s employment. Second only to App State in numbers, the Appalachian Regional Healthcare System employs more than 1,000 people. The healthcare system recently finished construction on a new facility in Blowing Rock. Watauga’s third-largest employer, Watauga County Schools, provides the county with 500-999 jobs. Construction is also nearing completion on a Publix grocery store on Blowing Rock Road, an area that has also seen the recent construction of a Krispy Kreme and IHOP. The U.S. 421 corridor in the Perkinsville area of Boone is also seeing more growth in recent years. A new Hampton Inn and Suites is now

complete, and a new, larger location for Modern Subaru and Toyota opened earlier in 2016. In addition to an economy large enough to support national chains, Boone is also home to a dedicated “shop local” initiative that extends from a wide-array of independent stores in the downtown shopping district to a dedicated weekly farmer’s market. The Boone business community is supported and promoted by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce, a dedicated group of local business owners that works to provide services and mutual support.

BOONE REAL ESTATE: A healthy market with stable prices

he Boone market oﬀers a wide variety of housing, including second homes, primary homes and condos.

RECORD TERRITORY: Boone is enjoying a healthy real estate market. Total transactions for single family homes and condos are at record levels, up 19 percent for 2016 over last year, and up 23 percent across Watauga County. (See the chart that accompanies this article). PRICING FLAT: The good news for potential buyers is that sale prices remain flat across our area, with a median sales price in the county of $230,500. The median and average prices in the High Country are still below the 10-year average and pre-recession pricing and are expected to rise slowly at sustainable rates. The highest prices are seen in the Blowing Rock and Valle Crucis/Foscoe areas, known for a large proportion of second homes and higher priced homes. The lowest prices can be found farther out in the county/away from towns, where the median price is $173,750. Boone’s median price of $215,000 reflects a higher proportion of condo sales, primarily closer to ASU. INVENTORY: The Boone and overall High Country real estate market is unique and appealing to buyers in that there is always a large inventory of homes and land. There is not a significant amount of industry in this area that creates “necessary relocations,” and a large proportion of homes are vacation homes. This results in a longer purchase cycle and a long pipeline of homes on the market. Average time on market is about seven months. SEE MARKET, PAGE 20

atauga County families are served by some of the best education opportunities in the state of North Carolina. From a high-performing, well-established public school system, to Watauga’s top tier charter and Montessori schools, High Country residents can rest assured that their children can be provided the best possible education right here in Boone. The majority of students in Boone and the surrounding county are served by Watauga’s public school system, Watauga County Schools. The system is home to nine schools — eight that educates students in kindergarten through eighthgrade and one consolidated high school. Currently the school system is home to more than 4,600 students. Early this year, data compiled by the

North Carolina State Board of Education showed that Watauga High School, in addition to exceeding almost every standard set by the state, also boasted a record high 90 percent graduation rate. The county’s public elementary schools have also excelled over the past years. Figures based on end-of-grade testing in Watauga’s eight K-8 schools saw local students exceed state averages in several categories. In reading tests, 66 percent of WCS students in grades 3-8 achieved proficiency, a full 10 percent above the North Carolina statewide figure of 56 percent. Students also beat the state average in mathematics. In math tests, 65 percent of WCS students demonstrated proficiency compared to 54 percent statewide. Watauga County Schools also oﬀers high school students the opportunity to earn college credit while attending WHS through the Innovative High School Program. ASU also oﬀers graduate programs and a doctoral degree in education. Watauga County is also home to Montessori, charter and Christian schools in Two Rivers Community School, Mountain Pathways Montessori School and Grace Academy. Two Rivers Community School is the High Country’s only public-charter school serving grades K-8. Founded in 2005, the school has been recognized twice as an N.C. EDUCATION FROM PAGE 26 Mountain Pathways Montessori School was founded in Watauga County in 1987. According to the school, Mountain Pathways was founded by a “group of parents and educators who wanted for our region’s children an opportunity for interdisciplinary education that met the needs of the whole child.” The school is currently home to 81 students and a staff of 15. Every lead teacher at Mountain Pathways is Montessori trained and certified. Grace Academy is a classical Christian School founded in Boone in 2008. The school follows a classical style of education that includes instruction of Latin. While not affiliated with a particular denomination, the school says it is “is distinctly Christian in its worldview, and its doctrinal commitments are consistent with those expressed in the early ecumenical creeds of Christianity and those arising out of the protestant reformation of the 16th and 17th centuries.” The K-9 school is home to 103 students and a staff of 19 and follows a “college model” in which students receive instruction on Mondays and Wednesdays and have three days in which they are able to work on review either at home or with instructors at the school. The High Country is also a supportive community for homeschooling families, with physical education opportunities provided by App State and support groups such as High Country Christian Home Schoolers.

hen people visit the High Country, the Boone area is often the first place they look for recreational activities. No matter if it is in the summer or winter, those who cherish the outdoors can find something that fits their tastes or abilities. During the winter months, the ski industry is often the first place tourists and local residents alike look for adventure and fun. Watauga County is the heart of the ski industry in North Carolina with plenty of slopes and trails for skiers of all abilities to try. Just 15 minutes south of Boone just oﬀ of Highway 321 is Appalachian Ski Mountain.

Appalachian Ski oﬀers ski and snowboarding trails for beginners, intermediate and advanced skiers. The resort also has ski and snowboarding rentals for those who don’t own their own equipment. Ski or snowboarding lessons are available through the French Swiss Ski College. Appalachian Ski Mountain also has an ice rink, a restaurant and lodging. Golf courses

There are also several golf courses within the town of Boone. The Boone Golf Club is a public course located just off of Highway 321 just south of the city limit. It is an 18-hole golf course with a practice green and a restaurant and clubhouse. The Mountaineer Driving Range and Golf Center located off N.C. Highway 105 Extension offers a driving range and golf instruction for all levels of ability. There are also two other public golf courses close to Boone. The Willow Creek Golf Club is located in Vilas and the Sugar Mountain Golf Club is located in Sugar Mountain.

Other activities

Others who love the outdoors can also go climbing, fishing, hiking and whitewater rafting

while visiting the High Country. The area a runner’s mecca and is home to races throughout the year. Rafting and tubing are also activities that are available to tourists and local residents of Boone. There are business that specialize in guiding tours down rivers and streams, including High Mountain Expeditions, River & Earth Adventure and Wahoo’s Whitewater Rafting and Canoeing. A great way to take in the views is from on top of a horse. Grandfather Stables, located at 534 Church Hollow Road in Boone, offers lessons in horseback riding and offers boarding services. Appalachians by Horseback, located in Boone, and VC Farms, located in Valle Crucis, offers horseback riding.

eral walking trails in Boone. The Boone Greenway Trail is located behind State Farm Road with an entrance to the trail from the Watauga Parks and Recreation complex and the National Guard Amory. The paved trail is three miles long and is relatively flat, with several oﬀshoot trails and connections to other paths. There is also a trail at Brookshire Park located at the end of Watauga Industrial Park on the eastern edge of Boone. A trail circles the park, and an additional trail winds to the west of the park. But the big trail project is still a work in progress. The Middle Fork Greenway is a paved hiking and biking trail that will eventually link between Boone and Blowing Rock along the Middle Fork tributary of the New River. The trail will provide connections to downtown Blowing Rock, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the

The Boone area provides varied terrain and scenic views for amateur and competitive cyclists. Boone’s Rocky Knob Park is a premier mountain biking destination, oﬀering several miles of moderate to challenging mountain biking trails, skills areas and a playground. The park is open to use by hikers and runners as well. One of the highlights of the summer activities is the Blood, Sweat and Gears Bike Ride, which is in June. It is a fundraiser for the Red Cross, which distributes the money to several diﬀerent causes. The BS&G, which has been run for the last 18 years, starts Valle Crucis School. It included around 900 riders taking on the 90-mile course and another 400 who tackled the 50-mile course.

Youth and adult sports The Watauga Parks and Recreation Department oﬀers several

recreational activities for youth and adults in and around Boone. The department sponsors youth football, soccer, basketball, volleyball and youth baseball and softball. The department made the switch to the Tar Heel Leagues for its youth baseball and softball teams. The recreation also oﬀers a swimming pool for youth and adults. The High Country Soccer Association sponsors teams that play in a variety of age groups and against teams from throughout the area. Appalachian State, whose sports teams are known as the Mountaineers, has 20 athletic teams, including football and track and field, which are played in Kidd Brewer Stadium, located on Stadium Drive just oﬀ Rivers Street. Appalachian State’s women’s and men’s basketball teams, its volleyball teams and its indoor track and field teams play at the George H. Holmes Convocation Center located on the corner of Blowing Rock Road and Rivers Street. Appalachian State also plays baseball at the Jim and Bettie Smith Baseball Stadium, plays softball at the Sywassink/Lloyd Stadium, and also wrestles at Varsity Gym. The newest member of the Boone athletic community is an indoor football team called the High Country Grizzlies. They begin play in March 2017 at the Holmes Center.

BOONE’S WEATHER From Summer to Winter

t an elevation of about 3,300 feet, Boone residents experience everything from cool summers to a snow-filled winter, providing plenty of seasonal weather variety for visitors from both the north and south. Throughout the year, the average annual precipitation in Boone is 52.65 inches, comparable to that of a rainforest. With so much rain, humidity can be high, and it can get very foggy. Waking up to a misty mountain view can be beautiful, but it also requires cautious driving, especially along winding roads.

One of the main attractions in the High Country that comes with fall’s 60-degree weather is “leaf season.” The changing leaves cover the ground, as others hang on tree branches for a few more weeks.

According to the National Weather Service, the average annual snowfall in Boone is 34 inches. Snow can start to fall as early as October, cutting fall short, or as late as April

or March, extending winter into spring. At least one blizzard typically occurs between those months. While the harsh winter weather can deter some from venturing outdoors, others make the trip to Boone specifically to enjoy the cold through snow sports like skiing and snowboarding. Through it all, fall is perhaps one of the most popular times of the year though because of “leaf season,” as it is most commonly known. The array of orange, red and yellow leaves, both on the ground and on trees, attracts photo enthusiasts and other visitors alike. Throughout the High Country, art crawls are held on select dates each month, giving residents and visitors the option to spend the evening in the mountains, where the weather is cool, the people are friendly and artistic talent is abundant.

DOWNTOWN BOONE FIRST FRIDAYS On the first Friday of every month, visitors can come to

downtown Boone to shop, mingle and meet local artists from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at shops and galleries. Attendees are free to stay late for live music and enjoy food and drinks at one of the many fine restaurants located in Boone.

SECOND SATURDAY CELEBRATION OF THE ARTS Start your day oﬀ with a visit to the participating studios and galleries on the second Saturday for a studio and gallery hop through downtown Boone. For participating studios, visit www.watauga-arts.org. Participants then can visit the Blue Ridge ArtSpace in

Boone from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for an evening rich in “art-full” experiences.

SECOND FRIDAY GALLERY CRAWLS The second Friday night Gallery Crawl in downtown West Jeﬀerson is the place to be for all three, as the Ashe County Arts Council sponsors gallery crawl events from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Aug. 12. Crawlers are invited to stroll the streets, visit the galleries, view the downtown murals and take advantage of the downtown restaurants. ost tourists travel to Boone to enjoy the scenic view of the mountains or to enjoy the many outdoor sports that Boone has to offer, but there are also hundreds of shops from high end to thrift scattered throughout the area for shoppers to choose from. A few stores are reminiscent of oldtime Boone. The original Mast General Store, which opened in 1883 in Valle Crucis, expanded in 1988 to include a store in downtown Boone. The stores offer anything from name brand clothing such as North Face and Columbia to apothecary, toys, outdoor gear and candy. Across the street from the Mast General Store is another shop reminiscent

of Boone’s past. The Shoppes at Farmers Hardware and Supply Company opened in 2005 and sells merchandise from various retailers and local artisans. Boutique and specialty stores such as Lucky Penny, Boone Belles, Lililu on King and Watsonnata Western World are also located on King Street. The stores offer trendy clothing for any occasion. Boone Mall features a large selection of stores, including JCPenney, Belk, Old Navy, Maurices, Rue 21 and Claire’s. TJ Maxx, also at the Boone Mall, is a good place to go for a bargain on new clothing, accessories, toys and home decor. One street down from the outlets is downtown Blowing Rock, with all sorts of unique shops and boutiques to choose from. Other than clothing, downtown Blowing Rock also features great antique and craft shops for home decor like Hanna’s, Cabin Fever, Final Touches and Rustic. Galleries to visit in both Boone and Blowing Rock include Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery for local handmade pottery, Reinert Fine Art for paintings from emerging artists and national well-renowned artists and Main Street Gallery/ Expressions Craft and Hands Gallery for local artists’ handcrafted works. There are also a number of thrift stores scattered throughout the area. Anna Banana’s is a consignment store that buys and sells gently used clothes and shoes, so it is not uncommon to find vintage and brand name items at half of their original price. Ram’s Rack Thrift Shop is also located on King Street and offers a chance to buy secondhand items for the whole family like children’s clothes and outdoor supplies. For more thrifting options, two Goodwill stores are within two miles apart in Watauga County.

Moving to Boone? RAM’s Rack Thrift Shop is your source for fairly priced goods, used furniture and household furnishings. The thrift shop also accepts donations of used furniture, appliances, household items and clothing.

THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY One of the nation’s most loved national parks is minutes away from Boone. BY BRIAN MILLER

he 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most visited sections of the National Park System. To go along with the beautiful scenery, the parkway also offers recreational, educational and cultural experiences, incorporating numerous campgrounds, picnic areas and more than 300 miles of hiking trails. The varied habitats along the parkway offer protection to an enormous diversity of plants and animals. Supporting as many plant species as any other unit of America’s National Park System, including more than 100 species of trees, the parkway offers incredible views. Monitoring the weather is an important factor in making the parkway experience as safe and enjoyable as possible. It’s encouraged to plan extensively to avoid unexpected road or weather conditions.

Weather on the parkway can vary widely due to different elevations and locations, according to parkway officials. The parkway experience is meant to be slowpaced and relaxing for drivers, but it’s important to avoid distractions by enjoying the park’s beauty from designated viewing and parking areas. The safest way to enjoy the views is by parking at overlooks available along the road, which appear frequently at regular intervals. Park staff reminds visitors that the parkway is a living and fragile resource, and visitors can help protect it by following park regulations. The park website provides a real-time road closure map, facility schedules, safety information, suggested itineraries, visitor center locations and more at www.nps.gov/blri.
