29th Christmas in July features a weekend full of food, fun and festivities
BY JAMES HOWELL james.howell@mountaintimes.com
T
he 29th annual Christmas in July Festival returns to downtown West Jefferson July 3-4 for a weekend filled with food, fun and festivities the entire family will enjoy. Each summer, Christmas in July celebrates the local Christmas tree industry, which has been named the No. 1 Christmas tree provider in the country. During the years, Christmas in July has undergone many changes, but the spirit is still intact. Kicking off the event is the MaybeMaybe Not Band performing live on the Main Stage at 6 p.m. July 3 on the corner of Jefferson and Main streets. Lawn chairs are encouraged, as the concert is only the beginning of the evening. The official opening ceremony begins at 6:45 p.m. with event organizers and town officials welcoming everyone to the festival. Special guests are promised to make an appearance during the opening ceremony. The music continues at 7:15 p.m. with the Blue Country Band and the night finishes up with the Buck Haggard Band at 8:30 p.m. The fun picks back up at 9 a.m. Saturday with performances on the Main Stage and the Community Stage showcasing local talent. The Amantha Mill Band brings its talent to the Main Stage at 9 a.m. Other bands taking the Main Stage include Crooked Road Old-Time Band, Madison Shepherd and the Mountain Park Old Time Band, The Back Porch Bluegrass Band, Clay Lunsford and the NC Thumbpickers, Wayne Henderson and Friends, The Hard Tyme Bluegrass Band, Clay Bank Bluegrass Band, The Dollar Brothers Band and Brandy Miller and Friends. Not to be outdone, the Community Stage offers festivalgoers a plethora of entertaining acts, including the Junior Appalachian Musicians, the performers with Dancin’ Debbie’s, April’s School of Dance, the Fleet Feet Cloggers, Generation eXcellent, Taylon Miller and Steve Lewis. The Community Stage closes up at 5 p.m. with Tony Halsey’s Voice Studio students. Ashe County was named the No. 1 Christmas tree producer in the country, so what would a Christmas festival be without some focus on Christmas trees? Tree bailing competitions will be held hourly from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Backstreet Park behind the food venders. Also at Backstreet Park will be wreath making demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Christmas tree displays from local growers will be on display throughout the festival for the public to view, enjoy and vote

More than 20 vendors will serve up some tasty sweets, meats and other treats Friday and Saturday. Food vendors will be located on Back Street between Main Street and Ashe Street.
on as the “Best in Show.” The winner will be announced at the end of the festival. What would a festival be without mouthwatering foods? Icy cold beverages and deep fried goodies are just the thing to complement two days of Christmas spirit. More than 20 venders will pack Backstreet and offer not only tasty snacks, but also full meals. There are slated to be more than 100 vendors selling their wares and works of art. Vendors can be found throughout the festival up and down Backstreet, Main Street, State Street and College Avenue. Along with the festival vendors, the Ashe County Farmers Market will be open Saturday with extended hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Adding to the flare of the festivities will be roving street performers. There is also a rumor that Santa and Mrs. Claus will
be touring the streets of West Jefferson throughout the festival. Another time-honored event during Christmas in July are the Civil War reenactments. Join reenactors on a journey back to Ashe County in 1865, to the days of brother versus brother and neighbor versus neighbor. Beginning with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. Friday, the war comes to life with a short skirmish. Moving on to Saturday morning, the camp opens for the public at 8 at the West Jefferson BowieSeagraves Park. Events throughout the day include a courage and honor talk by General Jones, a chance to meet the generals, a ladies tea hosted by Mrs. Robert E. Lee, a weapons demonstration and supper. The highlight of the day will be the reenactment of the Battle of Killian Creek beginning at 4 p.m.
Christmastime is typically about children, so what better time to let the children have their fun than at Christmas in July. Activities from face painting to art creating stations to bounce houses should be more than enough for children of all ages to enjoy. Sponsors of the 2015 Christmas in July are Goodwill, Timothy M. Rector, D.D.S., P.A., Dr Pepper, Ashe Civic Center, Ashe County Arts Council, SkyLine/SkyBest, Perry’s Gold Mine, American Emergency Vehicles, Mountain Aire Golf Club, Ashe County Cheese Factory, Mountain Town Dental, 580 WKSK The Farm, the Jefferson Post, 4 Seasons Vacation Rentals, ’Tis The Season, LifeStore Banking and Insurance, Fleet Feet Cloggers, Libby’s, SSSink, Ashe County Chamber of Commerce, the town of West Jefferson and the Ashe Mountain Times.

Farmers Market Hours extended for Saturday’s festival BY ERIK HOFFMANN erik.hoffmann@mountaintimes.com he Ashe County Farmers Market is extending its hours July 4 in conjunction with the 2015 Christmas in July Festival. The market will open at 9 a.m. and stay open through 7 p.m. Festivalgoers and shoppers alike can find local handmade crafts, fresh local produce and a wide variety of jams, jellies, honeys, breads and much more. The Ashe County Farmers Market started in 1990 with eight vendors selling their goods on a regular basis. Today, the market averages between 70 and 75 vendors during the summer months.

“We’ve got any kind of crafts you’re looking for,” said John Smyre, Ashe County Farmers Market manager. “Pottery, cutting boards, flowers, dry flowers, for anything from as far as a craft goes, we have. This is not an ordinary market to the point that it’s got to be handmade or homegrown right here in Ashe County.” Smyre added that the market is more than just a place to sell foods and crafts — it’s more of a social gathering for folks throughout the season. “So, we do bring in quite a bit of people from the Charlotte area, the Winston-Salem area and the Greensboro area,” Smyre said. “They come up for the
weekend and look forward to coming to the farmers market. They’re looking for fresh produce. They’re looking for the crafts, also. Then we become a social point for a lot of people, too. They run into old friends and just want to chitchat or whatever like that. So, we bring in quite a bit to the market. … With Christmas in July and our holiday market, we’ll do about 20,000 roughly for the year people coming in.” If shopping or visiting aren’t enough, the Ashe County Farmers Market also hosts events and demonstrations throughout the year. Already it has hosted a fly-fishing and tying demonstration, a trout grilling demonstration, a
sheep shearing demonstration and hosted the Grass Feed Beef Day and Grilling Fundraiser. Upcoming events include a vegetable grilling demonstration Aug. 1, a salsa and tomato contest Aug. 15, a poultry day fundraiser Sept. 5 and an apple pie contest Oct. 3. Normal operating hours for the market are 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays April through October, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays July through September and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 21, 28 and Dec. 5. hristmas in July would not be complete without things for children to enjoy, including bounce houses, face painting and so much more. The Ashe County Arts Council is once again sponsoring children’s activities under their tent July 4. The arts council has face painting, button making, art activities and more planned for children of all ages. The activities are free to anyone willing to express themselves creatively. Speaking of creativity, perhaps the children would enjoy some of the creative culinary concoctions and confections the Christmas in July Festival has to offer. From potato chips on a stick to deep fried cookies to pig candy, there is just about everything for every taste found among the vendors this year. After getting their fill of food, maybe some children would enjoy some action, adventure and a little education all rolled into one. A Civil War reenactment group is performing at the West Jefferson Bowie-Seagraves Park July 3 and 4. Youngsters can get an up-close look at
the Battle of Killian Creek at 4 p.m. July 4. If history is not their thing, perhaps jumping is. The inflatables are back again this year, featuring slides, bounce houses and more. What Christmas festival would be complete without a visit from the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus. Mr. and Mrs. Claus are making a special trip from the North Pole to Ashe County to greet all the boys and girls, both naughty and nice. Make sure to have a camera ready to get a jump-start on all those homemade Christmas cards. Bring the lawn chairs for the little ones, as the festival is full of entertaining acts July 3 and 4 at both the Main Stage on the Community Stage. The Main Stage will feature 13 different music acts during the course of two days. The Community Stage will consist of local star-studded talent, including the Junior Appalachian Musicians, Dancin’ Debbie’s dancers, April’s School of Dance performers, Fleet Feet Cloggers, Generation eXcellent, Taylon Miller and Steve Lewis, and Tonya Halsey’s Voice Studio students.

ontinuing the tradition of promoting Ashe County Christmas trees, the “Best of the Best” Christmas Tree Competition will take place on Saturday, July 4, at the Backstreet Park in West Jefferson. As part of the “Best of the Best” competition, local tree growers will display 6- to 8-foot Christmas trees for the public to view. According to Ashe County Christmas tree extension agent Travis Birdsell, attendees will vote on their favorite tree, and the winner for “best in show” will be announced at the end of the festival. The Christmas in July Festival began in 1987 as a way to promote local Christmas trees, which is Ashe County’s No. 1 cash crop. This is why the festival was named “Christmas in July” in the first place. The festival was originally organized by the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association, and even though the event’s organization has changed slightly during the years, the goal for the Christmas Tree Association has always been to involve visitors and locals alike with locally grown Christmas trees. “The industry changes and we’re in a constantly changing world, so we have to change up our approach to promote local Christmas trees,” Birdsell said. “This year, attendees will be voting on their favorite trees.” This year’s festival will mark the first time that members of the public will vote on their favorite tree during the Christmas in July Festival. Additional tree grower events will take place at Backstreet Park on July 4. Tree bailing competitions will take place hourly, lasting from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The festival will also feature wreath making demonstrations, also taking place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Ashe County Christmas tree industry has made itself known throughout the country. On Dec. 8, Ashe County was recognized by The Washington Post as being the largest producer of Christmas trees in the nation. “To actually be the largest county in the U.S. (in Christmas tree production) is a pretty big deal,” Birdsell said. “The primary reason we are

No. 1 is we have a dedicated and hard-working core of growers here in Ashe County.” The news was reported following the release of new data from the USDA Agricultural Census, which indicated that Ashe County now leads the nation in tree production. “Ashe County being recognized as the top producer of Christmas trees nationwide is great economic news,” said Cabot Hamilton, director of the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce. “Add to that the significant impact of tourism that choose-and-cut brings to Ashe. It is a huge win-win for Ashe County.”
According to The Washington Post article, Ashe County produces just shy of 2 million trees per year, which is nearly 100 trees per person living in Ashe County. Of American tree farmers, who harvest at least 17 million Christmas trees per year, nearly half of those trees (about 8 million) come from six counties in North Carolina and Oregon. The Ashe County Christmas Tree Association is a group of local family farmers who specialize in growing the “Cadillac of Christmas trees,” the Fraser fir. SEE TREE, PAGE 10

he 4th of July Livestock Show will be held at the Upper Mountain Research Station in Laurel Springs on Saturday, July 4. The show is scheduled to start at 10 a.m., however, participants will need to arrive early to weigh their animals at 8:30 a.m. “I’ll be good entertainment for the day,” said Ashe County livestock agent Micah Orefield. “Last year was good, all the kids had a great time, and that’s why we do it.” During the livestock show, children 18 and younger will compete against one another by showing off animals to a group of judges, leading animals around a ring and answering questions from the judges. This is called the “showmanship category.” “The big thing for the kids will be to lead animals around a ring, and keep them from lying down,” Orefield said. Participants in this category spend time preparing with their animals and also need to groom their animals prior

to the show. According to Orefield, the showmanship category will divide participating children into four age groups: 6 and under, 7-9, 10-14 and 15-18. The livestock show will also feature categories where animals are judged on their own, under different criteria. Each animal category, including goats, sheep/lamb, cows and chickens, will be judged based on their ability to breed
or to be sold at market. “Animals used for breeding like beef heifers and ewes are judged based on structural correctness and health, where market animals, like steer for example, are judged based on muscularity and size,” Orefield said. The livestock show isn’t exclusive to Ashe County residents and out-ofcounty participation is encouraged. Ribbons will be presented to winners in the showmanship category. Other class winners will receive other awards, including $20 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third. The Livestock Show will be coordinated by Ashe County Cooperative Extension, and prizes are being provided by Ashe County Farm Bureau. Animals involved in the show need to have current health papers upon entry, otherwise, a judge will evaluate the animal before participating, which could lead to disqualification. The Upper Mountain Research Station is located at 8004 N.C. Highway 88 East in Laurel Springs. For more information, call extension at (336) 846-5850.

Civil War reenactment at West Jefferson Park BY JAMES HOWELL james.howell@mountaintimes.com

he Blue and the Gray will battle it out once again during a Civil War reenactment that will take place in West Jefferson Park throughout the 2015 Christmas in July festival. “It’s fun for the reenactors and the visitors,” said Don Long, curator of the Museum of Ashe County History. “It’s a great attraction.” Even though the reenactment wasn’t part of the inaugural Christmas in July festival, the action packed show has become a popular attraction for festival attendees in recent years. The reenactment’s opening ceremony and “short skirmish” will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, July 3. Things will heat up on Saturday with the “Battle of Killian Creek” beginning at 4 p.m. and lasting until 6 p.m. The shows will be coordinated by the 1st Virginia Calvary Reenactment Unit, which has performed Civil War reenactments during the festival for the last few years.

According to the group, it portrays the 1st Virginia Cavalry, both mounted on horseback and dismounted on foot, and their wives, sweethearts and even children who struggled through
that historic time. The reenactment group wears period-style clothing and uniforms, carries authentic reproductions of weapons and other equipment, and lives in a historical camp and enjoys learning the history of the Civil War. According to the 1st Virginia Calvary’s website, the group doesn’t glorify warfare or focus on the politics of the Civil War. Rather, the group acknowledges the sacrifices of the thousands of brave soldiers, both North and South, who lost their lives during the war. The group also hopes to inform the public of historic events. “We … hope to bring a greater understanding of those events to ourselves and to the visiting public who attend our reenactments,” according to information from the 1st Virginia Calvary’s website.

aturday will kick off with music from the Amantha Mill Band at 9 a.m. on the Main Stage. “We are a community oriented folk/bluegrass act that is based out of Boone, N.C. Becca EggersGryder formed Amantha Mill and derived our name from the small mill community of Amantha, N.C., from which her family comes,” accord-
ing to information from www.amanthamill.com. “The original mill that we are named after washed away many years ago in a flood, but if you’re driving through Cove Creek, you can still see part of its footing.” Amantha Mill has honed its sound and performance to include musical types from traditional bluegrass to swing, cowboy, country and Americana/roots.
“There is something in each of our shows that will satisfy everyone,” according to the band. “Each member of Amantha Mill has a long history with their particular musical instrument and vocal talent. When joined, it all comes together to form tight harmonies and an explosive, energetic sound that pays tribute to our mountain music heritage,” according to the band.

ifteen-year-old musician Madison Shepherd is set to perform at the Christmas in July Festival on the Main Stage at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 4. Despite her young age, Shepherd has been playing banjo for the last six years, drawing local attention for her musical talents. On her website, Shepherd recalls how she first got into music: “I was probably around the age of 4 or 5 and my parents and I decided we would go to a Rhonda Vincent concert in Sparta, N.C. We hadn’t been to many bluegrass concerts, nor did we know much about it. Down the road from where we lived was a place called the Mountain Music Jamboree.
They had local bluegrass bands on Saturday nights, which we tried to attend quite often. “So, other than that, we had not had much experience with bluegrass and old-time music at the time. During intermission at the Rhonda Vincent concert, the JAM (Junior Appalachian Musicians) program from Sparta, N.C., performed. Each of the kids was in either fourth-, fifth- or sixth-grade at the time. And let’s just say, I was blown away. Particularly by the talent of the youth. Not to mention that Rhonda Vincent had just performed. So after that, I told myself that one day, I, too, would join the JAM program and play an instrument. The rest is history.”

Henderson’s musical prowess is a source of great pleasure and pride to his friends, family and neighbors in Grayson County, Virginia. His guitar playing has also been enjoyed at Carnegie Hall, in three national tours of Masters of the Steel-String Guitar, and in seven nations in Asia. In addition to his reputation as a guitarist, Henderson is a luthier of great renown. He is a recipient of a 1995 National Heritage Award presented by the National Endowment for the Arts. He produces about 20 instruments a year, mostly guitars; he is almost as well-known for the mandolins he has made. Good friend Doc Watson owned a Henderson mandolin. He said, “That Henderson mandolin is as good as any I’ve had my hands on. And that’s saying a lot, because I’ve picked up some good ones.” Some of Henderson’s instruments are intricately decorated but are

he BackPorch Bluegrass Band will perform on the Main Stage at noon on Saturday, July 4. Since 2005, there have been many versions of BackPorch Bluegrass, as many great musicians have come and gone, according to the band’s history. David Culler, the leader and founder of the group, is the only original member who remains, progressively growing the North Carolina-based band to what it is today, high quality, hard driving and highly sought after. Jerry Lankford, editor of The Record of Wilkes, has noted that “BackPorch Bluegrass is a band that delivers — hot and fast. As for strengths, there are no loose boards on this back porch.” “Front man David Culler (vocals/
S
guitar) dishes out a heaping helping of high, lonesome sound with one of the strongest bluegrass voices in the region,” according to website information. Culler’s love of bluegrass music inspired him to pick up the guitar in 2004 prior to forming the band “Bassist turned Dobro player turned now to banjoist, Tony Joines is a superb musician. Joines is in his fifth year with the BackPorch Bluegrass Band and is a band leader’s best friend, always willing to play or do whatever is necessary. Joines’ career has seen him with other groups in the past,” according to information from the band. Although they both play every stringed instrument, Wes Tuttle handles the mandolin/fiddle duties
and brings some lead and tenor harmony to the group. He has played with many professional groups in his time and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the band, the website said. Jim Matthews’ primary role is the upright Bass and some lead and smooth Baritone harmony, but is called upon from time to time to play fiddle, mandolin and guitar. Matthew is another great musician with lots of experience playing in bands all over the country and is steeped in skill in all genres of music, the website said. BackPorch Bluegrass is frequently honored with a special guest, Jacob Joines, 2011 Galax Fiddlers Convention Dobro champion and full-time member of the Darrell Webb Band, which makes for an incredible show, according to band officials.
Brandy Miller and Friends
aturday’s final concert will feature Brandy Miller on the Main Stage at 6 p.m. Brandy Miller is a 16-yearold, talented bluegrass banjo musician from Ashe County, according to the band’s information. Miller found her talent for the banjo at the early age of 6, playing with her father and his band. Miller also began taking lessons from two-time national banjo champion Steve Lewis at that time. Since then, she has been entering fiddler’s conventions, accompanying bands and has been accepted into the International Bluegrass Music Associa-

She is now an official member of “Daughters of Bluegrass.” Miller had the privilege of traveling to Lexington, Ky., in February 2013, where she performed alongside all-time great J.D. Crowe on Michael Jonathon’s Woodsongs. In July 2013, Miller traveled to Robbins to be filmed for the “Generation Bluegrass 2” documentary, which was released in the fall of 2014. Miller had the honor in 2013 to be a part of the 2013 IBMA Bluegrass Youth All-Star band.

The Dollar Brothers Band
A
s the festival draws to an end, the Dollar Brothers Band will perform its high energy, family oriented bluegrass on the Main Stage at 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. The Dollar Brothers is a traditional bluegrass band from Watauga and Ashe counties. Darrell Dollar, lead singer and older brother to Barry and Wade, plays mandolin and has wrote some songs for the band. Barry Dollar plays fiddle and banjo and sings lead and baritone. He is the second of the three brothers. Wade Dollar, the youngest of the three brothers, plays guitar, sings tenor and lead and also plays clawhammer banjo and Dobro.
“Tim Norris, banjo player, is a cousin to the Dollar Brothers. Tim also sings, plays guitar and the piano. We welcome our new bass player, J.M. Trivette. He’s from Zionville. He plays bass and sings,” according to information from thedollarbrothers.com. The Dollar Brothers has shared the stage with such luminaries as Bill Monroe, Jim and Jesse, The Seldom Scene, Doyle Lawson, The Osborne Brothers and others. The Dollar Brothers love doing the standards, as well as doing some of its own compositions on stage. Gospel music is also a very large part of the Dollar Brothers.
ClayBank Bluegrass Band
A
relatively new bluegrass band called “ClayBank Bluegrass Band” will take to the festival’s main stage at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 4. Gary Trivette is on bass, serving as the “old hand” among some talented young bluegrassers. Tyler Thompson is on banjo, Jacob Greer on guitar, and Zach Arnold on mandolin. All four are strong vocalists, with both
