nce again, the Christmas in July Festival will kick off with a giant puppet parade, courtesy of Elkland Art Center, at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, July 4. The parade will wind through the Christmas in July crowd, starting at the Ashe County Library and ending at the festival’s main stage on Main Street. According to Martha Enzmann, the director of the Elkland Art Center, a sizable amount of work goes into making the puppet parade possible. In order to aid her Herculean task of creating everything needed for the parade, Enzmann held two puppetmaking workshops at the Ashe County Arts Council building on June 7 and June 14. “What’s cool about this is people working on the puppets for the parade will actually have a chance to see their work at Christmas in July,” Enzmann said.

The puppet parade is sponsored by the Elkland Art Center and features volunteers of all ages carrying puppets of all shapes and sizes.

After the opening ceremonies at 6:45 p.m., live bands and vendors will be open for business until 10 p.m. Those bands include the Hard Tymes Band, the Buck Haggard Band, and Becca Eggers-Gryder & Amantha Mill Band. According to Enzmann, volunteers are needed to operate the puppets for the parade on July 4. Anyone interested in volunteering can contact her at (336) 877-5016.

Festival to host Civil War re-enactment

orget about modern warfare; anyone interested in how battles were fought during the Civil War will be treated to a re-enactment during the upcoming Christmas in July festival. The Civil Was re-enactment will take place at West Jefferson Park on Friday, July 4, and Saturday, July 5. A “short skirmish” will be held on July 4 on Main Street. However, the large re-enactment, called “the Battle of Boone N.C.,” will take place on July 5 at West Jefferson Park. These battle re-enactments will take place at 3 p.m. and later at 6 p.m. Also, on July 6, a Sunday church service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at West Jefferson Park. The park is located at 201 South Church St., West Jefferson. The Civil War re-enactment wasn’t always a part of the Christmas in July Festival. However, during the past few years, the re-enactment has become a staple event for visitors. “It’s fun for the re-enactors and the visitors,” said Don Long, the curator of the

R

eturning for this year’s Christmas in July Festival are Clay Lunsford and the N.C. Thumbpickers. Lunsford formed the N.C. Thumbpickers in 1990 to preserve the heritage of thumb- and finger-style guitar playing. The thumbpicking style involves playing a bass rhythm with the thumb and melodies on the higher-note strings with fingers. Lunsford is a relative

of Bascom Lamar Lunsford, who was known as the minstrel of the Appalachians and the author of the song, “Old Mt. Dew.” He has played for more than 50 years in the style of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis. Lunsford and the group perform Americana music, from fast banjo tunes to guitar instrumentals. Lunsford has performed throughout the region and with Wayne Henderson.

MONDAY - THURSDAY ~ 11AM - 3PM FRIDAY & SATURDAY ~ 11AM - 5PM

“I guess you would call it a demonstration,” Long said. “I don’t consider it a historic event, because a battle never took place in West Jefferson during the Civil War; West Jefferson wasn’t even here yet. But it’s still a good event. For the past several years, the 1st Virginia Cavalry Re-enactment Unit has been involved in the Civil War

re-enactment. According to information provided by the group, the 1st Virginia Cavalry Re-enactment Unit is a group of families and individuals who strive to relive the lives of the soldiers and civilians of the American Civil War. “We portray the 1st Virginia Cavalry, both mounted on horseback and dismounted on foot, and their wives, sweethearts, and even children, who struggled through that historic time,” said information from the group’s website.

The 1st Virginia Cavalry Re-enactment Unit wear period-style clothing and uniforms, carry authentic reproductions of weapons and other equipment, and set up camps according to the style of the times. “We do not glorify war, nor dwell on the politics of that era,” said the information. “We acknowledge the sacrifices of thousands of brave souls, North and South, and hope to bring a greater understanding of those events to ourselves and to the visiting public who attend our re-enactments.”

Y

oung heritage musicians, dancers, cloggers and even a puppet show will grace the community stage during the Christmas in July festival on Saturday. Kicking off the performances will be the Junior Appalachian Musicians, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. JAM is a program that introduces students to the music of the region through small group instruction and uses instruments native to the High Country area. The Ashe County JAM program serves children in fourth- through sixth-grades at Blue Ridge Elementary, Mountain View Elementary and Westwood Elementary. The JAM participants perform at nursing homes, festivals, concerts and other events. From 10 a.m. to noon, Dancin’ Debbie’s will entertain the crowd with their prepared dance moves and talent. Dancin’ Debbie’s have been performing and competing for more than 30 years. They have competed against more than 50 studios, including some of the best in the business, according to Debbie Little. More dancing will continue from noon to 1:30 p.m. as April’s School of Dance members display their moves. ASD is an award-winning group featuring routines involving tap, hip-hop, lyrical and modern dance. Miss Kitty’s Fleet Feet Cloggers will also return to the community stage, performing from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Fleet Feet Cloggers have been

together for approximately 17 years. They will showcase traditional and modern clogging with members ranging in age from 4 years old to their mid-70s. From 3 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., Ashe County’s own Taylon Miller will sing for the crowd. She just recently returned from Nashville where she traveled to record some songs for an upcoming album. While there, she also performed at the Cowboy Church of Nashville. Her first album was released last year. She has plans to finish her latest album in July. She has garnered several awards and much praise in her short career. She won first place in the youth solo division at last year’s Singing in the Foothills. Miller is a rising fourth-grader at Mountain View Elementary School. The Elkland Art Puppet Show will be held from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. on the community stage. The puppets are a favorite of many at the festival and help kick off festivities on Friday night in a parade from the Ashe County Public Library to the main stage. Many local individuals helped create some of the puppets at workshops prior to the festival and will be involved in the parade. Tonya Halsey’s Voice Students will sing from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. These students have received much acclaim for their performances. They will sing selections they have polished in classes, performances and competitions. Rounding out the performances on the community stage will be a drum circle from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

he annual 4th of July Livestock Show will be held at the Upper Mountain Research Station in the Laurel Springs community beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 5. “Last year’s show was pretty big,” said Ashe County livestock agent Micah Orefield. “Between the kids showing off the animals and the crowd, we probably had over 100 people there.” The livestock show is exactly that; youth will be showing off different animals to judges and answering questions about the animals. Anyone 18 and younger is eligible to participate. According to Orefield, four different age groups will present animals in the “showmanship category.” The age groups are 6 and under, 9-7, 10-14 and 15 -18. Orefield said members of the Ashe County Agricultural Club will practice showing off their animals prior to the event. This includes having good exchanges with the judges, dressing appropriately and properly displaying their animals to the judges.

According to Orefield, the animals scheduled for the show include sheep, goats and cows. Also for the first time at the livestock show, chickens will be displayed. This show isn’t exclusive to Ashe County residents. According to Orefield, groups will come from outside Ashe County to participate. Trophies will be presented for showmanship class winners. Other

class winners will receive other awards, including $20 for first place, $15 for second and $10 for third. All animals involved in the exhibit must have current health papers, and tags are required for sheep and goats. The Upper Mountain Research Station is located off Highway 88 East in Laurel Springs. Christmas festival promotes Christmas Tree Association BY JAMES HOWELL james.howell@mountaintimes.com

T

he tradition of the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association’s involvement with the annual Christmas in July Festival will continue this year with several Christmas treebased events. The Christmas tree events will be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, July 5, on the Back Street Park in West Jefferson near the gazebo. The events are as follows: a fertilizer backpack relay at 9 a.m.; a one-ton fertilizer relay at 10 a.m.; a tug-of-war at 11 a.m.; and a tree baling competition at noon. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of each event. Also, to further promote the Ashe County Christmas

Tree Association, wreathmaking demonstrations are available during all of the events. The Christmas in July Festival began in 1987 as a way to promote tourism in Ashe County. But the festival was also meant to promote local Christmas trees, Ashe County’s No. 1 cash crop, hence the name: Christmas in July. The Ashe County Christmas Tree Association was also developed to promote locally grown Christmas trees. The Christmas Tree Association is a group of family farmers in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains that specialize in growing the “Cadillac of Christmas Trees,” the majestic Fraser fir. The Fraser fir is highly prized all around the country because of its aroma,

shape, dark green color, excellent needle retention and strong branches capable of carrying heavy ornaments. Association members also grow a wide variety of other Christmas tree species and nursery stock, along with making and shipping wreaths and garland. Other association members operate choose-and-cut Christmas tree farms that families from across the South visit to get their yearly Christmas tree. For more information on the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association, call the N.C. Cooperative Extension, Ashe Center, at (336) 846-5850 or email info@ ashechristmastrees.com. The Christmas in July tree events are sponsored by the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association, the N.C. Cooperative Extension and Parsons Farm Supply.

Wayne Henderson to play at festival

F

amed guitarist and luthier Wayne Henderson will bring his unique Appalachian guitar style to the Christmas in July Festival from noon until 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Henderson’s sweet guitar playing has echoed through the chambers at Carnegie Hall, and has been enjoyed in seven nations in Asia during national tours of “Masters of the Steel-String Guitar.” As a luthier, Henderson produces about 20 instruments a year, most of which are guitars. Henderson also has a reputation for crafting high quality mandolins. The late Doc Watson, a good friend of Henderson’s, would frequent his shop in Rugby, Va. Watson, who owned one of Henderson’s mandolins, voiced high praise for Henderson’s work. “That Henderson mandolin is as good as any I’ve

had my hands on. And that’s saying a lot, because I’ve picked up some good ones,” Watson said. Artists have also complemented Henderson’s handcrafted guitars. According to waynehenderson.org, blues guitarist John Cephas said that Henderson “is probably the most masterful guitar maker in this whole United States.” The website also said collectors are mainly interested in Henderson’s guitars for their volume, tone and resonance.

Of course, with that kind of quality going into each guitar, Henderson has a long-standing waiting list for the instruments he produces. Henderson also sponsors a music festival called “The Wayne C. Henderson Music Festival and Guitar Competition,” which was established in 1995. A portion of the proceeds from the festival is placed into a scholarship fund to aid local young musicians in continuing their education.

eff Little will perform Saturday during the Christmas in July Festival. Little hails from Boone and is known as “the Piano Man.” The piano isn’t usually the lead instrument, but that isn’t the case when Little performs. He began playing piano at age 5. His family ran Little’s Music Store in Boone, where musicians of all styles frequently dropped by to play a tune. Among those was the late Doc Watson, a neighbor and close family friend whose music helped shape Little’s unique piano style A professional musician since the age of 14, Little is conversant with oldtime, country, bluegrass, rockabilly and blues. With a rack-mounted harmonica and vocals, he can also be a one-man show. He settled in Nashville, Tenn., for a while, where he worked as a session man
