ASU linebacker lays down the Law BY STEVE BEHR sports@wataugademocrat.com

John Law provides a lot for Appalachian State from his linebacker position. Athleticism? Sure. Law is one of the most athletic players on the field for the Mountaineers, even though the source of his ankle injury suffered last year may not indicate that. Law hurt his ankle while walking off the team bus after it arrived for the Mountaineers’ game at Chattanooga last season. It’s an injury that is normally reserved for the common football fan, but not for a Division I football player. “It was a freak accident getting down off the bus,” Law said. “I twisted my ankle. I already had ankle injuries from high school, but it was a freak injury off the bus.” Of course, his teammates were sensitive to Law when it came to giving him a hard time about being injuryed in such a way. Well, maybe not. “Aw man, all the time,” Law said of the constant ribbing he took from his teammates. “They told me how unathletic I was, all day.” Unless Law has a repeat reason for an injury, there won’t be many who will accuse the redshirt freshman of being unathletic in 2013. Law has worked his way into the Mountaineers’ starting lineup for 2013 after being redshirted following his injury three games into last year’s season. He responded with 12 tackles in the Mountaineers’ 30-6 loss to Montana on Aug. 31. Law made a key stop in the first quarter when he kept Montana runner Jordan

Canada from converting a fourthand-one on the Mountaineers’ 19-yard line. “John has an awful lot of potential,” new App State defensive coordinator Nate Woody said. “He missed some plays for us in the spring due to a couple of different injuries. He had an ankle injury and followed with a pulled hamstring. We were really anxious to see what we were going to get. I couldn’t be more pleased. What he shows is a tremendous amount of strength and he’s got good speed and quickness.” Law had plenty of time to think about returning to the team while being redshirted. He spent the next few weeks of last season rehabilitating his ankle, but returned in time for the Georgia Southern game to play on the ASU scout team. “I just tried to give the team the best look I could to get them ready for that game,” Law said. It wasn’t the first ankle injury Law had suffered. He injured his ankle five games into his senior season at Grady High School in Atlanta. Law was on his way to a standout senior season by making 80 tackles in just five games. In his junior season at Grady, he was named first-team All-City honors after making 140 tackles. Law received his first college recognition when he was named the Freshman of the Week by the Southern Conference. Law also said the Mountaineers must cut down on little mistakes that cost them in the loss to Montana. “I feel like we had a couple of missed assignments or missed tackles,” Law said.

Appalachian State redshirt freshman John Law had 12 tackles in his first start with the Mountaineers. DAVE MAYO | SPECIAL TO THE WATAUGA DEMOCRAT
