WHEN APP STATE HAS THE BALL In recent games, that means handing the ball off to either Marcus Cox, Terrance Upshaw or Ricky Fergerson and turning them loose. Cox was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week following his performance in a 44-0 Mountaineers win over visiting Georgia State. Cox gained 250 yards and scored three touchdowns on 29 carries. Cox’s longest run went for 76 yards, although he did not score on the play. It turned out to be the second-longest play from scrimmage against Georgia State, as Fergerson raced 84 yards on a non-scoring run. Cox averaged 8.6 yards per carry Saturday. Fergerson averaged 8.8, and the Mountaineers ran for 469 yards against the Panthers. Overall, the Mountaineers are second in rushing in the Sun Belt with 258.0 yards per game. Unfortunately for App

Appalachian State hosts Louisiana-Monroe in a Sun Belt matchup at 3:30 p.m. today at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
State, stopping the run is the strength of the Louisiana-Monroe defense. The Warhawks are second in the conference to Georgia Southern in rushing defense by giving up 150.6 yards per game. Monroe is also is No. 1 in the Sun Belt in total defense by giving up 349.5 yards per game. App State may have to pass the ball to move it against the Warhawks. Quarterback Taylor Lamb threw the ball just 13 times against Georgia State. WHEN UL MONROE HAS THE BALL The Warhawks have struggled offensively this season. They are 10th out of 11 teams in total offense in the Sun Belt with 336.1 yards per game, but to be fair, they have played three Southeastern Conference teams (LSU, Kentucky and Texas A&M), and beat Wake Forest 17-0. Much of the Warhawks’ problem is in their running game. Their 95.1 yards per game average is dead last in the conference by four yards to 10th rated Georgia State. Monroe’s passing game fares a little better by averaging 245.0 yards per game, which is fifth in the Sun Belt.
