App State is coming off of two straight losses where they have scored less than 25 points each. Last in the Sun Belt East Division, App State is in uncharted water at this point in the season with a 1-2 conference record and 3-4 overall. The good news for the Mountaineers is that they are playing a 1-6 Southern Miss team that is coming off of a 55-3 loss to South Alabama. This could be the key game to get the Mountaineers back on track and get closer to becoming bowl eligible. A dominating win is just what Shawn Clark and his team needs to try and turn around this season before it’s too late. While 4-4 and 2-2 is not great for a Mountaineer fan base used to a lot better, it’s better than falling to 3-5 and 1-3.
When Southern Mississippi has the ball:
Southern Miss will have to score more than they did against South Alabama. With only a field goal, the Golden Eagles have to get something going on offense to have a chance to beat the Mountaineers at Kidd Brewer during App State’s Homecoming. If the Golden Eagles can get the pass game going and go after an App State secondary that has seen better days, the game could be closer than the errors and stats appear. For both teams, this game will be a turning point for both teams as they move forward in the season.
