Cocke County’s history goes back to late 1700s

WhenCockeCountywas formallyestablishedin 1797,settlershadalready carvedouthomesand farmsheretwentyyearsor soearlier.

NativeAmericans,of course, werethefirsthumanresidentsofthearea. Proofoftheirresidency continuestosurfacein theformofarrowheads andbitsofpotterywhen springtimeplowingis done.

Althoughithasnotbeen proven,circumstantial evidenceindicatesthat SpanishexplorerHernandoDeSotoandhisparty passedthroughhere.

Whitetrappersand huntersdefinitelybegan makingtheirwayinto thiswildernessbythe mid-eighteenthcentury. Bythe1770sand1780s, moreandmorepioneers movedhere,trickling downfromtheUpper Wataugacommunityand acrossthemountainsfrom NorthandSouthCarolina. Quitenaturallytheearliestsettlementssprouted alongthethreerivers— Nolichucky,FrenchBroad, andPigeon—whichflow throughthecounty.With thesesettlerscamethe needforprotectionagainst theoccasionalIndian attacks.Severalforts, includingBell’sStation, Whitson’s,Huff’s,Wood’s, McKay’s,andSwagerty’s, wereerectedassafe havensforthecitizens.TodaySwagertyFort,which standsalongsideOldHwy. 321northofParrotts-

TheonlyRevolutionary Warskirmishknownto haveoccurredinCocke CountywasattheWar Ford.

Manyoftheearlysettlerscameheretoclaim landgrantedtothemfor theirserviceduringthe RevolutionaryWar.Over 100suchveteransare knowntohavereceived acreage.

Becauseofthecounty’s topography,largeplantationsandtheslavelabor associatedwiththemwere fewhere.Whileseveral familiesdidownslaves,

Bythe1830s,thecounty’spopulationremained small.Effortstobringthe railroadhereperiodically flourishedanddwindled untilaftertheCivilWar.

Whenhostilitieserupted,CockeCountiansfound theirloyaltiesdivided. Oftenbrothersfoughton differentsides.Although nomajorbattleswere foughthere,therewere atleasttwoskirmishes, oneatParrottsvilleand anotheratCosby.Much sufferingwasinflictedon thewomen,children,and elderlybybandsofmaraudingbushwhackers.

In1865,peacearrived andprosperityslowly returned.In1867,the railroadfinallyarrived andwithitcameaperiod ofunprecedentedgrowth. Thetracksranthrough whatwascalledGorman’s Depot, today’sdowntown Newport.

Inthe1880s,aftermuch controversy,thecounty seatwasmovedfromOld TowntoGorman’sDepot (alsocalledClifton).CitizensinParrottsvillebitterlyprotestedthemove, becausenowtheyhadto fordtworiverstoreach thecountyseat.Citizensin Bridgeportlobbiedheavily forthenewcourthouseto bebuiltthere.

FormaleducationarrivedintheformofAndersonAcademy,whichstood

Thetwentiethcentury broughtmorechangeand prosperitytotheregion. Withtheestablishment oftwocanneries, the BushandStokelyfamilies broughtjobsandbetter livingstandardstodozens offamilies.Thetannery’s openinginthelate1800s didthesame.
