Interesting facts related to Independence Day

Americans celebrate Independence Day every July 4. The holiday has become synonymous with summer fun, as grand fireworks displays and backyard barbecues are integral components of many people’s July 4 celebrations.

As Americans prepare for some festive Fourth of July celebrations, they can keep these interesting facts related to Independence Day in mind.

There have been many iterations of the American flag. The American flag has become an iconic symbol of freedom recognized across the globe since the United States declared their independence from Great Britain in 1776. But few July 4 celebrants may know that the current version is the 27th iteration

of the American flag. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the current version of the flag officially became the flag on July 4, 1960.

More than half of all Americans own an American flag. A 2023 poll from WalletHub found that 57% of Americans own an American flag. And that’s not the only way Americans show their national pride, as the same poll found that roughly one in three Americans intended to purchase patriotic merchandise for July 4. The United States is not the only place to celebrate American independence. Such celebrations occur in various countries, including Australia, Denmark, Ireland, and Norway. The festivities in Rebild National

Park in Denmark are believed to be the largest celebration of American independence outside the United States.

The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that 150 million hot dogs are consumed on July 4. Though there’s no corresponding estimate related to how many hamburgers Americans eat on July 4, various reports suggest Americans eat roughly 50 billion burgers annually, so it’s fair to conclude many a burger will be consumed this Independence

July is a popular month for nations to celebrate their independence. In addition to the United States, various countries,

including Algeria (July 5), Argentina (July 9), The Bahamas (July 10), Belarus (July 3), Burundi (July 1), Canada (July 1), Cape Verde (July 1), Colombia (July 20), Kiribati (July 12), and Liberia (July 26), celebrate their Independence Day in July.

John Adams, a Founding Father of the United States and the second president in the country’s history, felt Americans should celebrate their independence from Great Britain on July 2. That’s because the Continental Congress voted for independence on July 2, 1776. However, the Declaration of Independence was not approved for two more days, thus making July 4 the day to celebrate America’s independence from Great Britain.

Celebrate Independence Day with Fourth of July on Mabry’s Hill

Mabry-Hazen House is hosting its annual old-fashioned Fourth of July celebration on Thursday, July 4, 2024 from 5 p.m. – 10 p.m. Tickets are now on sale. Gather with the museum to celebrate Independence Day, the Declaration of Independence, and community. Enjoy great views, good food and beer, live music, fun games, great company and tours of the 1858 house.

The Mabry-Hazen House Museum, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is located atop Mabry’s Hill in Knoxville, Tennessee. Built in 1858, three generations of the same family resided in the Italianate-style home overlooking downtown Knoxville, the

Tennessee River, and Great Smoky Mountains. Furnished and decorated in the style of several decades, Mabry-Hazen gives a rare view into 130 years of Knoxville history.

The day recalls the spirit of 19th century Independence Day celebrations when communities gathered for patriotic revelry and enjoyment. Take it easy with this laid-back celebration. It is the perfect time to come chill on the hill!

• face painting

• sack races

There’ll be delightful fruit pies from Small Comforts Kitchen and you can reserve a whole pie for pick up on the Fourth (link in bio). And what would a celebration be without ice cream!

Tickets for adults (16+) are $15 ( includes one drink ticket), children (ages 5-15) are $5, members of Mabry-Hazen House are $10, and

children under 5 are free. A limited number VIP tickets with premier, reserved seating plus other benefits are also available for $50 per person. More information and link to purchase tickets available at www.mabryhazen.com/ fourthofjuly.

Museum of Appalachia

hosts annual Independence Day Anvil Shoot

While most Americans celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, the Museum of Appalachia, located in Clinton, Tennessee, marks the occasion with an old- fashioned “anvil shoot.” Every Fourth of July, the Museum uses gunpowder to launch a 200-pound anvil hundreds of feet into the air.

Anvil shoots were once a common way for pioneers to commemorate holidays, elections and other special occasions.

The anvil shoot is the centerpiece of an all-day celebration that includes a national bell-ringing ceremony, flag procession, live music, southern food, demonstrations from blacksmiths, beekeepers, dulcimer makers, spinners, weavers, rail splitters, and more.

Anvil shoots will occur at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

For ticket information, go to www.museumofappalachia.org.

Things that go boom in the summer night

Fireworks are staples of summer, when neighborhoods sporadically light up with multicolored splendor, and distant pops can be heard on a regular basis.

Most fireworks are made of a small tube called an aerial shell that contains various explosive chemicals, says the American Chemical Company. The shell has gunpowder and something called “stars,” which give fireworks their color when they explode. The shell is housed in a mortar that will launch the firework into the air after a fuse is lit. Ultimately, a bursting charge of the firework explodes and ignites the black powder and stars. If the stars are randomly placed in the shell, they will produce random patterns. But many fireworks are carefully created so that the stars are placed to allow for specific patterns when the firework explodes.

The following are some types of fireworks that surely will be lighting up night skies, courtesy of Sky Bacon Fireworks, Jake’s Fireworks, and American Pyrotechnics Safety & Education Foundation, and Pyro City.

BROCADE: This firework has a large number of trailing stars falling slowly in an umbrella pattern. It’s one of the most common firework effects.

CAKE: Sometimes called a “repeater” or a “multi-shot aerial,” a cake is a firework that has a single fuse used to light several tubes in sequence. They fire at a rapid pace and can sometimes feature more than 1,000 shots. Cakes are often used as part of a show’s finale.

CHRYSANTHEMUM:

This is a spherical break of colored stars that leave a visible trail of sparks.

CROSSETTE: A crossette is a shell that contains several large stars that travel a short distance before breaking apart into smaller stars with loud crackling sounds. This creates a criss-crossing effect.

DAHLIA: This shell produces a starfish-like shape when it bursts.

FIRECRACKERS: These are more about bang than flash. They lay on the ground, and when the fuse is lit, will go off one after another with a loud bang.

FISH: These produce an aerial effect that seems like several objects swimming through the air and only lasts a few seconds.

FOUNTAINS: These fireworks shoot between four and eight feet into the air and are very colorful. They are sometimes called “driveway items” or “safe and sane”

because they don’t propel like other fireworks and may be safer for novices.

PISTIL: A pistil features a center sphere of stars that burst in a spherical shape. Pistils contain an outer sphere of stars as well.

ROMAN CANDLE: This firework has a paper tube that shoots flaming balls out of one end of the tube.

STROBE: Similar to other

fireworks with a spherical break shape, this has the added effect of blinking components that makes it appear like shimmering water in the sky.

UFO: This firework spins very fast and lifts high into the sky, where it bursts into a special aerial effect. They’re sometimes called helicopters, sky flyers or planes. There are many different types of fireworks that add bang and color to evening celebrations.

How to handle fireworks safely

Warm weather generally translates to more time spent outdoors. That means more barbecues, days spent poolside, trips to the beach, and even camping excursions. This time of year also inspires people to celebrate. What better way to signal the party has started than with fireworks?

Fireworks traditionally are part of large celebrations, such as national holidays or grand opening events. Many individuals also take it on themselves to set off fireworks during block parties or other neighborhood gatherings.

Though fireworks are aweinspiring, they’re also dangerous, which is why it’s best to leave them to the professionals.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that fireworks-related injuries and deaths in the United States have risen by roughly 25%in the last 15 years.

“The safest way to enjoy fireworks is to watch the professional displays,” said Alex Hoeh-Saric, chair of the CPSC.

Three-quarters of fireworks injuries occur the weeks before and following the July 4th holiday in the United States.

Fireworks can injure any part of the body, but burns to the hands and fingers, trunk, and arms are the most commonly affected areas. Injuries to the eyes, including blindness, also may occur.

Sparklers are not necessarily safe, either. The CPSC reports that 1,100 injuries result from sparklers each year.

As fireworks become widely available, it’s imperative that individuals follow these crucial safety tips when using them.

• Never allow children to play with or ignite any type of firework, including sparklers.

• Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby to extinguish fires or sparks.

• Only buy and use fireworks if they are legal.

• Light fireworks one at a time in accordance with manufacturers instructions.

• Choose a field or area free from trees and other obstructions, far away from spectators to light fireworks.

• Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

• Never point or fire fireworks in the direction of other people.

• Do not place any part of the body directly over fireworks when lighting a fuse.

Fireworks can be beautiful, but are best left to the professionals.

Bite into these facts about hot dogs

Hot dogs are the yin to the hamburger’s yang. Franks and burgers are a common pair at barbecues and ballparks, and rightfully so. Handheld, portable meals, they pack a convenient and flavorful punchy.

Few foods may seem as American as hot dogs. However, hot dogs are derivatives of European sausages. This fact and more can shed light on the humble hot dog, which is sure to find its way to a grill near you this summer.

Mental Floss says it’s pretentious to consume a hot dog with utensils. Hot dog etiquette experts also insist adults should not top their hot dogs with ketchup, which they suggest is a topping strictly reserved for children.

Hot dogs are often associated with New York City. However, hot dogs gained popularity across the country in the 20th century.

Hot dogs are often called frankfurters. This refers to Frankfurt, Germany, where pork sausages similar to hot dogs are believed to have originated. Hot dogs were given their name by cartoonist Tad Dorgan. He observed a vendor selling “hot dachshund sausage dogs” during a baseball game at New York City’s Polo Grounds. As legend has it, Dorgan couldn’t spell the name of the dog, instead writing only “hot dogs.” The name eventually caught on.

Despite several jokes as well as speculation regarding what hot

dogs contain, hot dogs are cured and cooked sausages that contain mainly pork, beef, chicken, and turkey. The meats come from the muscle of the animals. If a product contains organ meats, it must be declared on the packaging.

In 1867, Charles Feltman made a cart with a stove on it, which he used to boil sausages. The cart also had compartments to keep buns fresh. Carts that sell hot dogs on the street are now seen in cities across the country.

Hot dogs are a NASA-approved food for astronauts.

While hot dogs are sold at many venues, data indicates that the popular convenience store chain 7-Eleven sells the most grilled hot dogs in North America, with 100

million sold annually.

Relish, sauerkraut and even ketchup are popular hot dog toppings. But mustard is by far the most popular.

Why are there typically 10 hot dogs per pack and only eight buns per bag? When hot dogs were first introduced, they were sold at varying quantities at the butcher shop. Hot dogs were eventually standardized to packages of 10, but buns are baked in clusters of four in popular pans designed to hold eight rolls.

Hot dogs are a summertime staple that have an interesting and extensive history.

Grill safely this summer

Plenty of people can be found working their grilling magic year-round. But the vast majority of people do the bulk of their grilling over the summer, when warm temperatures contribute to a relaxed atmosphere that makes outdoor cooking and dining that much more appealing.

The relaxing nature of summer can make it easy to overlook safety, particularly when grilling. However, the right safety measures when cooking over an open flame can prevent home fires and other accidents that can cause injury and even death.

In recognition of the many things that can go wrong when grilling, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Fire

Administration offer these simple fire safety tips that every grillmaster can keep in mind as summer grilling season hits full swing.

ONLY USE A GRILL OUTSIDE.

Grills should never be used indoors, and that includes in garages with the doors open. Before lighting a flame, make sure the grill is at least three feet from siding, deck rails and eaves.

ESTABLISH A SAFE ZONE AROUND THE

GRILL. A three-foot safe zone around the grill can decrease the likelihood that pets will run into and potentially tip over the grill. Kids can be taught to respect this zone as well so they avoid being burned.

OPEN A GAS GRILL BEFORE LIGHTING IT.

Charcoal grills, hybrid grills and smokers cannot be lit unless the lid is lifted. That isn’t the case with gas grills, but gas grills should never be lit with the lid closed. If a gas grill is lit with its lid closed, gas can build up inside and that could cause an explosion. Even if there’s some summer rain falling, open the lid on a gas grill before turning the ignition switch.

KEEP AN EYE ON THE GRILL AT ALL TIMES. It’s tempting to walk away from a grill while food is cooking, but someone should always be tasked with staying close to the grill. If cooks must walk away, ask another adult to stay close to the grill until you return. All it takes is a few seconds for a fire to start.

CLEAN

THE

GRILL

REGULARLY. Regular cleaning of the grill is both healthy and safe. Cleaning helps to ensure the cooking surface is clean and unlikely to cause food poisoning. But a grease-free grill also poses less of a fire hazard than one that hasn’t been cleaned.

LET COALS COOL BEFORE DISCARDING THEM. Coals from the grill should be given ample time to cool before they’re removed from the grill and discarded.

REMEMBER TO TURN

THE GAS VALVE TO THE OFF POSITION AFTER COOKING. When cooking with gas grills, cooks must remember to turn the valve to the off position once all the food has been cooked.

Simple safety measures can ensure summer grilling season goes off without a hitch.

Smoking food for beginners

There’s no shortage of ways to impart flavor to foods when cooking at home. Smoking food is one method that has grown increasingly popular in recent years.

Smoking imparts a unique flavor to a wide variety of foods. Like other approaches to cooking, smoking involves a learning curve that may include some trial and error. Grilling enthusiasts who want to try their hand at smoking food can keep these tips in mind.

REMEMBER

THE MANTRA “LOW AND SLOW.” Low and slow is the preferred method among cooks experienced in smoking. The method involves cooking foods at low temperatures for long periods of time. When smoking, unlike with traditional grilling, cooks want to ensure the food is not directly over a flame. Smoking stones can be used to absorb and deflect heat, and similar products can accomplish the same. That absorption and deflection allows foods to cook slowly, which in turns helps impart the smoky flavor people love.

CONSIDER

ADDING WATER

TO

CREATE MOISTURE. A water pan inside the smoker can ensure foods remain moist while smoking. Long cooking times can dry foods out, but the water in a water pan can make the environment inside the grill more humid.

ADD

FLAVOR

WITH

WOOD. Seasoned wood chunks and wood chips can add flavor to foods, and such products are readily available at many grocery

stores and home improvement retailers. Choice of chunk or chips depends on which type of smoker individuals have. The grilling experts at Weber advise using chips when light smoking for less than an hour. If smoking for an hour or more, Weber advises using chunks.

CONSIDER

ACCESSORIZING AN EXISTING GRILL.

Smokers or grills that can accommodate smoking can be expensive, and cooks who already have reliable charcoal or gas grills may not be able to justify such an investment. In such instances, smoker boxes, which sit right on an existing grill grate and make it easy to transform grills into makeshift smokers, can do the trick. In addition, smoker attachments that can be attached to gas and charcoal grills can enable a less expensive introduction to smoking foods.

MONITOR TEMPERATURES.

Temperature is important when smoking foods. If temperatures rise too quickly, foods can quickly become dry and overcooked. If temperatures do not rise, foods can sit on the grill for hours on end. Each recipe is unique and will suggest an ideal temperature range when cooking foods slow. That may require staying home and monitoring the grill temperature, periodically

adjusting vents to maintain a steady temperature. Many smokers now enable users to monitor temperatures via a smartphone app, and those can be useful for cooks who cannot stick around the house for the duration of the smoking.

Smoking is a popular way to cook foods over an open flame. Smoking may involve some initial trial and error, but the results are well worth navigating one’s way through the learning curve.

Simple tips for more flavorful grilling

Grilling is sometimes described as an art form. Many skilled grillmasters are a testament to that assertion, and it’s apparent to anyone who enjoys grilled foods that some who man the grill have a knack for producing flavorful dishes.

Though grilling requires a little trial and error on the path to becoming a go-to grillmaster, there are some simple strategies anyone can employ to produce more flavorful finished products.

DRY RUB FOODS

BEFORE PUTTING THEM ON THE GRILL.

Grilling enthusiasts may debate if a dry rub or a marinade is best for grilled foods, and that back-andforth may never produce a definitive answer. The choice of dry rub or marinade is ultimately up to the

cook, but a dry rub can be more convenient because it can be applied shortly before foods are placed on the grill without sacrificing flavor. Many recipes call for foods to marinate for several hours or even overnight. Both dry rubs and marinades can improve the flavor profile, but the former can do so without too much planning ahead of time. Dry rubs also tend to be made with ingredients such as salt, pepper and brown sugar that many people already have at home, adding to the convenience of this approach that can enhance flavor without too much effort.

OIL THE GRATES BEFORE COOKING.

Similar to utilizing a dry rub when cooking, oiling the grill grates can

ENHANCE YOUR SUMMER MENU WITH LOCAL, SEASONAL PRODUCE

Fruits and vegetables just taste better when they’re in season. During summer in the United States, this means bright, juicy tomatoes, sweet strawberries and, of course, buttery summer corn. Seasonal produce often doesn’t need much work to taste delicious: a drizzle of olive oil here or a sprinkle of salt there is all you need to enhance those natural flavors. If you’re at a loss for how to make the most of summer produce, try checking out a local farmer’s market or community-supported agriculture (CSA) program. The farmers will likely be able to tell you about where and how your food was grown - an experience that you definitely can’t get at the supermarket. Plus, farmers can help you find extra-fresh regional produce such as Washington cherries or Georgian peaches. You might be able to score a bushel of summer fruits or veggies for a great price, allowing you to experiment with your harvest. For example, versatile berries can dress up your morning yogurt, upgrade a summer smoothie or simply be scooped up and eaten by the handful, grizzly-bear style. Or

extra virgin olive oil (410 F) when oiling a grill grate. The oil applied to the grate can add some additional flavor, and also create a nonstick surface that ensures food is not torn apart while it cooks over an open flame.

BRING MEAT TO ROOM TEMPERATURE.

One of the keys to successful grilling is to ensure foods cook evenly. Prior to grilling meat, take the meat out of

celebrate the start of summer by baking delicate, chewy strawberry shortcake cookies, the perfect treat for a summer picnic.

QUICK PICKLES AND SAVORY JAMS

Ever find yourself wondering why restaurant food looks and tastes so good? Sometimes, a little bit of garnish, sauce or pickled vegetables is all you need to kick a plate up a notch. The good news is that pickling can be surprisingly easy - and it lets you preserve those summer flavors for year-round enjoyment.

If you’re a beginner in the world of brine, start with some simple sweet and spicy pickled red onions. Just 15 minutes in the kitchen will pay off in a crunchy, tangy jar of goodness that tastes perfect when layered on top of avocado toast or tacos. Once you’ve mastered the basics, you’ll feel confident about pickling just about everything from avocado to zucchini and in between.

Another way to mix up your summer menu is by trying out savory jams. Tomato jam and bacon jam can be used as condiments for burgers when you’re looking for something a little fancier than mustard. Savory jams are also an excellent addition to cheese boards or sandwiches: a truly versatile summer treat.

the refrigerator roughly 20 to 30 minutes before you intend to put it over a flame. This allows the meat to reach room temperature, which in turn increases the likelihood it will cook evenly.

The culinary experts at WilliamsSonoma note that wood can be used to add flavor to grilled foods. Williams-Sonoma recommends soaking wood chips, herbs, or

USE NO-COOK SAUCES AND DIPS TO SAVE TIME

If you’re in search of a summer snack but can’t stand to heat up your kitchen during an already hot day, try adding some no-cook sauces and dips to your repertoire. Pico de gallo is an easy-to-make dip that goes well with tortilla chips for a late-afternoon burst of freshness.

Or whip up a cool, refreshing Indian raita that pairs perfectly with spicy summer dinners - if you don’t devour it with leftover naan first, that is. Lemony, creamy and cheesy bean dip is another simple appetizer that will tide you over while you’re waiting for the grill to work its magic.

INFUSE ICE CUBES INTO YOUR SUMMER BEVERAGES

During hot summer days, staying hydrated is key, so why not do it in style? Creating ice cubes that are infused with herbs, edible flowers or fruit juice will take your drinks to the next level this summer. Infused ice cubes will make any cocktail Instagram-worthy. They’re also the perfect way to enhance your iced tea and sparkling water, making any evening feel like an event.

If infusing ice cubes is too much fuss, you can also just put those

grapevine cuttings for 30 minutes and then draining before using with a charcoal grill. Avoid soaking wood or aromatics when grilling on a gas grill, as doing so can make it difficult to ignite the grill.

Grilling is a skill that anyone can develop over time. But even novices can employ a few strategies to increase the flavor profile of their next meal cooked over an open flame.

garnishes directly into your drinks for a bit of extra flavor. It’s hard to go wrong, but some classic flavor pairings include refreshing cucumber and mint or tender basil and strawberry. Even a simple squeeze of citrus will make your drink just that little bit more special.

SUMMER DELIGHTS

Fall brings with it pumpkin spice everything, winter is the perfect time for hearty stews, and spring brings the bountiful, beautiful fresh fruits and vegetables that are soon to come. Unless you’re lucky enough to live in a place that’s warm all year long, don’t forget that summer days will be gone soon.

Those juicy peaches and sweet ears of corn will vanish from your kitchen, leaving behind only wishes for a little bit more warmth. So make the most of summer while it lasts: don’t overlook these cooking tips next time you’re contemplating dinner or headed out to do some grocery shopping. They won’t just simplify your cooking routine. They’ll help you enjoy food in a way that is in sync with nature and all it has to offer. And that might just be what the perfect summer is all about.

How to host a memorable summer barbecue

As temperatures start to heat up, so, too, do backyard grills. In fact, grilling is an essential component of a good summer barbecue. There are many other ways to put your mark on cookouts as well. These ideas can make your event all the more memorable.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Guests have certain expectations and simplicity often tops the list.

A simple playlist of recognizable, popular songs playing in the background, classic yard games like cornhole or horseshoes, sack races or water balloon tosses for the kids, and tasty classic fare on the grill, including burgers, hot dogs and chicken drumsticks, is likely all you need to put smiles on the faces of your guests.

The coolest iced tea trends that will impress with every sip

Are you tired of making the same iced tea concoction? You’d be surprised by all the simple yet unique ways there are to enjoy a glass of iced tea. From fruit-infused tea to tea-based cocktails, discover these cool iced tea trends that will impress you with every sip and leave you craving another glass.

HEALTHY AND REFRESHING SIPS THAT CAN’T BE BEAT

Iced tea is a drink of choice for many, and there’s a reason for it besides its refreshing taste. It is incredibly versatile, and you can tailor the recipe to meet your health goals. Instead of reaching for that sugary pop, you can go for

an unsweetened iced green teait’ll keep you hydrated without the unpleasant sugar headache.

That’s not to say that you have to drink your iced teas flavorless. If you’re looking for a diet-friendly way to spruce up your iced tea, try infusing it with herbs or fruitsmuch like you would do to make flavored water. There are many fun combinations to experiment with, depending on the type of tea. Black tea may be best with sweeter fruit to balance the stronger notes of bitterness, while the more delicate flavor of green tea is best suited for less intense fruit flavors like blueberries. Whether using berries or ginger and honey, infused iced tea is proof that healthy drinks can also be yummy.

ICED TEA FROM AROUND THE WORLD

The influence of global tea cultures is introducing exciting flavors and unique recipes that the rest of the world may be unfamiliar with. If you’re getting bored of your average

PREP THE GRILL AND YARD IN ADVANCE

If it’s early in the summer season chances are that the grill and yard could use some attention. Make sure all the burners are clean and working properly. Clear clutter from the yard and give patio furniture a thorough cleaning. Add outdoor furniture if you need more seating. Have a spare propane tank on hand so you won t run out of fuel. If you have a pet, be sure that the yard is cleared of waste. In addition to cleaning the yard, stock up on citronella candles or insect repellents. Bugs may want to join the festivities, too.

CREATE A RED, WHITE AND BLUE BURGER

No barbecue is complete without delicious burgers cooking over an open flame. Those burgers can give an extra nod to the Stars and Stripes by showcasing the nation’s well-recognized colors. Place your grilled burger patty on your bun of choice. Top it with raw or grilled

tomato slices (red), a slather of mayonnaise or a more dressed up aioli (white), and some blue cheese crumbles (blue). Carry the color theme over into a side salad as well, with your favorite greens topped with beets, blueberries and chunks of feta cheese.

SERVE BUFFET STYLE

One of the easiest ways to serve a number of people is to put the food out on long tables so that guests can pick and choose what they want. Place condiments and beverages in a separate area to keep the line flowing.

SEPARATE BEVERAGES

Make sure that alcoholic beverages are kept separate from non-alcoholic options so that children do not get into the wrong drinks. Coolers placed on opposite sides of the yard can eliminate confusion. It doesn’t take much to make summer barbecues enjoyable. With delicious food and close friends and family in attendance, fun is guaranteed.

iced teas, it’s time to venture out and try these trending drinks.

Iced matcha has been all the rave lately and is widely loved for providing a kick of caffeine without the same level of anxiety that some may experience with coffee. Matcha is made from a fine powder of ground green tea leaves and is traditionally used in Japanese tea ceremonies. It can, however, be an acquired taste as it is slightly bitter, with some describing the taste as grassy. If you want to give it a shot, iced matcha is simple to make, only requiring cold water, matcha, ice and an optional sweetener.

If you’re not a fan of matcha’s bitterness, Thai iced tea is just the drink for you. It’s made by brewing a Thai tea mix - black tea mixed with spices like cardamom - and sweetened with sugar and condensed milk. This drink is known for its iconic bright orange color and as a refreshing and sweet treat.

SHAKING IT UP WITH TEA-BASED COCKTAILS

Iced teas are truly so versatile that you can even use them as a cocktail base. It’s no surprise that many teabased cocktails have been popping up at bars and restaurants and becoming the star of the show.

To uplift your cocktail game, make a batch of your favorite infused iced tea and add a shot or two of your choice of spirit. Iced green tea mojitos and Long Island iced teas are classics, but don’t be afraid to roll up your sleeves and play bartender for the night by trying different variations of things. The addition of tea to your alcoholic beverages will add an eye-opening depth of flavor that transforms the traditional recipe.

ADD A HINT OF BAKING SODA

Baking soda may be one of the last things you’d think to add to an iced tea, but it’s a hack that’s catching on. Apparently, this ingredient doesn’t

just belong in your baked goods but also in your glass of tea. Adding a pinch of baking soda will give you a clearer and less bitter glass of iced tea. This is especially useful if you oversteep your tea bags and get a bitter pitcher that makes you wince with every sip. You can save your batch with a dash of this secret ingredient that will leave you with a smooth glass of tea.

MAKE IT A DESSERT WITH A SORBET AND TEA COMBO

When you’re craving a dessert, you might reach for a chocolate bar or some cookies, but what about sorbet in tea? This unconventional pairing works well as a fun and yummy treat. A scoop of fruity sorbet is not too heavy and compliments the tea well. Mixing the two together gives your tea some sweetness that’ll satisfy your sugar cravings.

Not only can you add sorbet to tea, but you can also do the reverse to make a tea-flavored sorbet. If you have an ice cream machine, it’s pretty simple to turn this summer’s favorite drink into a frozen dessert. Just steep your black tea as normal and add some lemon juice and sugar. Once it’s cooled, churn the mixture in the ice cream maker and freeze. In a few hours, you get an unbelievably refreshing dessert, perfect for a hot summer day.

MAKE ICED TEA YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE THIS SEASON

The best part about iced tea is that you can make it your own. Whether you’re looking for a healthy drink option or a sweet treat, iced tea is a blank canvas to which you can add exciting flavors and ingredients and create unique yet refreshing beverages. From infused tea to cocktails and recipes inspired by other cultures, it’s time to explore what iced tea can offer beyond what you already know.

This sweet ‘sandwich’ is a favorite summertime dessert

Ice cream sandwiches are a treat any day of the year, but can be particularly refreshing when the mercury climbs.

According to the ice cream novelty company Ice Cream Social, ice cream sandwiches may have evolved from a treat called ‘okeypoke’ that was once served by street vendors in London. This dessert was a slice of vanilla ice cream cut from a large slab. Providing an easier and more portable way to enjoy a serving of ice cream, ice cream sandwiches, food historians believe, were invented in 1899 by an unnamed pushcart vendor in New York City’s Bowery neighborhood. This vendor served vanilla ice cream between two graham wafers.

The modern ice cream sandwich, which is the more recognizable rectangular serving of vanilla ice cream nestled between two chocolate cookie wafers, is attributed to Jerry Newberg. Newberg began selling these novelties at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh in 1945. Ice cream sandwiches gained popularity around this time for their portability as well as their flavor, so much so that the popular Carvel ice cream company unveiled its own take on the ice cream sandwich

“The Flying Saucer” in 1951 to celebrate the opening of its 100th franchise shop.

Other manufacturers have

their own ice cream sandwich incarnations, and ingredients vary around the world. Cookies, cakes, biscuits or other ingredients serve as the “bread” to hold the ice cream in place. The novelties also are not difficult to make at home. People can experiment at home by scooping softened ice cream and placing it between home-baked or store-bought cookies.

Ice cream sandwiches also can be turned into other desserts, such as an ice cream sandwich cake or an icebox cake. All that is needed are a few ingredients and some imagination.

Unwrap ice cream sandwiches and layer them in a cake pan, such as a rectangular or a round springform pan (cut the sandwiches in half for the springform pan and layer vertically versus horizontally in a rectangular pan), with hot fudge, caramel sauce and whipped topping, as desired. Extras like chopped nuts, sprinkles, crumbled cookies, or chopped up chocolate bars can be added to the cake to customize flavor. End with a top layer of whipped topping for the frosting. The ice cream cake should be covered and frozen for at least 30 minutes before serving.

The internet is full of ice cream sandwich cake recipes in greater detail for those who need more guided instruction. This is one treat that probably won’t have many leftovers.

Ice cream sandwiches originated more than a century ago and

remain a delicious treat on a hot day.

Ideas for fun on family summer vacations

Vacations are a great way to escape the daily grind and relax while making memories.

According to a recent survey from Nationwide Travel Insurance, U.S. consumers are optimistic about travel plans throughout 2024. Ninety-one percent said they have plans to travel domestically, and 50% had international trips on the horizon. Also, 40% intended to travel more than they did in 2023. A large percentage of those traveling will be doing so as families. School breaks make summer a great time for families to get away, although savvy family travelers also buck the trends and opt to travel when the crowds may be lighter. Certain vacations and activities are best geared toward family vacationers. Explore these ideas before booking a vacation:

STAY AT AN ALLINCLUSIVE RESORT. Whether you stay on domestic soil or travel abroad, an all-inclusive resort is a fine option for families. That’s because once the trip is booked and paid for, all of the food, most of the beverages and many amenities are all handled. That means families can simply check in and start having fun. All-inclusive resorts may feature board games, water sports, movie nights, and even kids-only dance clubs.

PLAY MINIATURE

GOLF.

Miniature golf games and warm summer evenings are a perfect match. Most resort towns have at least one mini golf course to test skills on the small-scale

links. During times when the weather may not be ideal, indoor mini golf can be an entertaining diversion.

SET UP CAMP. Campsites

and RV parks offer a bevy of activities for active families. Not only is there the excitement of sleeping away from home and next to nature, but certain campsites also serve as small, self-contained resorts with offerings like pools, hot tubs, golf courses, tennis courts, or boating options as part of their featured amenities.

TAKE A SIGHT-SEEING

TOUR. Check the local travel

guides to see which type of entertaining or educational tours are available nearby. There are trolley tours, boat tours, bike tours, and walking tours that present the area sights in an informative light. The benefit of a tour is that all the work is removed and all tourists have to do is show up and enjoy the experience.

SPEND A DAY SWIMMING.

Plenty of family vacations revolve around time around the pool or along the coast. Swimming doesn’t require much gear, and as long as the weather is amenable, it’s possible to while away the hours for most of the day.

Even after sundown, the beach can be a go-to spot for bonfires, music and fun. Remember to lather on the sunblock so that sunburns do not derail vacation plans.

EXPLORE THE THRILLS AND ATTRACTIONS.

Plan a family vacation a stone’s throw away from an amusement park so that everyone can get their hearts racing on roller coasters and other fast-paced amusements. Theme parks have various rides that are geared toward different age groups. Families can enjoy many recreational pursuits while on vacation this summer.

Outdoor activities ideal for summertime

George Gershwin’s song “Summertime,” from “Porgy and Bess” offers: Summertime and the livin’ is easy Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high

Summer can be a magical season full of fresh air, warm days and nights, blooming flowers, and plenty of opportunities to spend time in the great outdoors. There are so many ways to fill summer days, and people are urged to maximize time spent outdoors during this time of year. Since the sun’s rays can be particularly harmful between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., protective clothing and sunscreen is recommended during this time; otherwise, people can engage in outdoor activities during times when the sun is less potent. Those seeking some summertime recreation inspiration can consider these activities.

FAMILY BIKE RIDE:

Explore trails or bike paths in the area in advance, and then prepare bikes for an excursion. Bicycle riding is a great cardiovascular activity that people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy. Try flat paths for beginners, and then build up the length and intensity of rides as experience is gained.

DAY AT THE BEACH:

Some attest there is no more perfect place than the beach on a summer day. The waves lapping the sand, the birds calling in the air, and the sounds of children’s laughter and sunbathers’ chatter

all combine to create a relaxing seaside symphony. According to WebMD, the negative ions given off by the ocean can improve mood and add to the calming effect the beach provides.

BACKYARD

OBSTACLE COURSE:

Construct an obstacle course in the backyard that everyone can try. It can include having to jump through tires; climb a jungle gym; run through a sprinkler; and crawl under a low-hung clothesline. Family members can compete to see who can finish the course in the least amount of time.

WALK A BOARDWALK:

Those lucky to live near a coast can spend an afternoon or evening strolling the boardwalk, enjoying the various fare and fun activities offered. Many boardwalks have games of chance and small rides for kids. Adults may enjoy the restaurants, bars and shops. Of course, no trip to a boardwalk is complete without coming home with some saltwater taffy.

HIKE: In a survey of Americans 18 and older conducted by the National Recreation and Park Association, nearly 50% said going for a walk or hike was their favorite outdoor summer activity. Hiking requires very little to get started and can produce numerous opportunities to witness nature and get some exercise.

There’s no limit to the ways people can enjoy the great outdoors when the weather warms up.

How to make summer travel more affordable

Summer is the peak travel season. Whether vacationers plan to travel internationally or domestically, they can expect to pay top dollar as they head off for parts unknown.

Much has been made of inflation over the last year-plus, as the cost of seemingly everything has risen considerably since early 2022. And the cost of travel has seemingly increased by an even greater percentage than the cost of groceries. Data from The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index indicates the cost of airfare increased by more than 25 % just between January 2022 to

January 2023. Though travel has never been inexpensive, the rising costs noted in the Consumer Price Index have scared many consumers into staying home, However, consumers who want to travel but don’t want to break the bank can try various strategies as they seek to get out of the house this summer.

TRAVEL DOMESTICALLY.

With airfare costs skyrocketing, now might not be the most budgetfriendly time to travel overseas. Thankfully, would-be vacationers can still get away. By driving to

their destinations, vacationers can save money and also maintain greater control of their trips, something that isn’t always so easy in an era marked by routine flight delays and cancellations.

CHANGE YOUR TIMELINE.

If a faraway dream destination beckons, travelers might still be able to make it work if they have the flexibility to alter their timelines. Rather than taking a Monday through Friday off from work, consider starting and ending a vacation in mid-week. It’s generally less expensive, and sometimes significantly so, to

Plan a national park adventure

The National Park Foundation reports that the National Park System spans more than 84 million acres and encompasses 424 sites and units in the United States. National parks, like the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, do their part to foster conservation of natural resources and reserve wild land for the scores of animals that call these places home. They’re also enticing places to visit, with their vast vistas and interesting wildlife. Planning ahead can make any trip to a national park even better.

KNOW WHEN TO GO.

Research the best times of year to visit certain parks. All may not be open year-round. Think about the kind of experience you want to have. Most parks are busiest during the summer. Therefore, if you want to skip the crowds, perhaps visit in a slower season.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENTS.

With so many parks, it can be challenging to decide where to go. Take into consideration your interests as well as your limitations. Find out which amenities and features each park offers, including shuttles, stores for gear, animal life, terrain, and potential hazards. The more you know about each potential park, the better you can narrow down the place to visit first.

KNOW THE RULES AND REGULATIONS.

Most parks have regulations in place to keep visitors safe. Some parks require reservations to enter or access certain areas of the park. Some may need you to reserve

space in advance. Permits may be needed for certain activities, such as fishing. Check the park’s website to learn about permits or restrictions that may affect your trip.

CHOOSE YOUR ACCOMMODATIONS.

With their expanse of land and things to see, you’ll likely want to spend more than one day exploring a park. Figure out if the park has accommodations on the property. If not, you’ll need to locate lodging nearby. Camping on the grounds can be a way to enjoy the park more

intimately. Look into campsite rentals or whether recreational vehicles can be parked on a campsite in or near the national park. Yellowstone and Yosemite are two national parks that tend to book campsites well in advance, so plan accordingly.

PICK YOUR PRIORITIES.

National parks tend to be massive, so make a list of the must-see attractions this time around (you can always visit again). While you can have an itinerary, you likely will enjoy the trip more if you’re relaxed and get

to meander around rather than sticking to a strict schedule.

CONSULT THE RANGERS.

Make friends with the park rangers. They are experts on the park and can let you know which places to visit or if there are any shortcuts to certain attractions. Utilize their experience and guidance.

National parks are located across the United States. The parks are wonderful vacation spots, and visitors can plan now for their trips to see these natural wonders.

Summer crafts families can enjoy together

Things seem to slow down in summer. Come summer, the hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, diving through ocean waves, and setting up tents at campsites near or far.

When the weather is accommodating, there’s a seemingly endless list of ways to enjoy time spent outdoors. But as everyone knows, Mother Nature tends to be a bit unpredictable during the hazy days of summer. Thunderstorms can roll in quite suddenly, or rain may persist for a few days as the atmosphere attempts to right itself after an abundance of steamy days. Keep a list of craft ideas at the ready to make the most of time spent inside or out. The following are a few ideas.

FRIENDSHIP

BRACELETS: There have been different iterations of friendship bracelets for every generation. With some general craft supplies, such as embroidery thread, beads, plastic lanyards, or other jewelry-making materials, kids can make and share a variety of friendship bracelets.

SEASHELL

CREATURES: At the next beach excursion, pick up differently shaped shells. They can be painted and glued together to resemble different animals or whatever designs one can imagine.

DREAMCATCHERS:

With some twigs, yarn and feathers, crafters can make dreamcatchers to hang bedside.

SUNPRINTS: Check out the craft store for a special lightsensitive solution that can be painted onto thick craft paper. Set various natural items on top (such as fern boughs, shells, feathers, and more) and let the sun do its work. You’ll ultimately be left with some beautiful silhouettes.

LEATHER SEWING

KITS: Evoke the feelings of summer camp right at home with leather sewing kits that enable everyone to make handcrafted leather wallets or small purses.

PAINTED STONES:

Kids can have fun gathering smooth pebbles from trails or at the shores of lakes. They can be painted with various designs or sweet sentiments, only to be left around the neighborhood for others to discover.

SEA GLASS

JEWELRY: An adult can use a very thin drill bit to make holes in sea glass remnants that washed up on beaches. Feed through earring hooks or chains to create one-of-akind jewelry.

DYED SHOES OR

ACCESSORIES: Use commercially produced or homemade dyes made from teabags, berry juice, turmeric powder, or more to color certain items. Dress up canvas sneakers with summertime hues, or make colorful bandanas to help keep you cool.

Summer craft ideas abound to keep everyone entertained all season long.

Kayaking dos and don’ts

Fireworks are staples of summer, when neighborhoods sporadically light up with multicolored splendor, and distant pops can be heard on a regular basis.

Kayaking is a healthy and enjoyable activity that attracts new enthusiasts all the time. Part of what makes the sport so popular is the relative ease with which people can get started.

Kayaking requires minimal gear (kayaks can be rented if not purchased) and no advanced skills are required. However, kayaking is not to be taken lightly, as watersports can be unpredictable. Adhering to certain dos and don’ts can make kayaking safer.

DO choose the right boat. There are boats rated for kayak racing and those that are strictly for recreational purposes. Some boats are meant for calmer waters and others for waves and open seas.

DON’T forget to check the weather forecast before heading out in the water. Storms can come up relatively quickly, and offshore winds can

make it challenging to paddle back to shore.

DO let someone know where you’re going and how long you plan to be out on the water.

DON’T touch or get too close to wildlife, as animals can be unpredictable and even dangerous.

DO dress for the water temperature and not the weather outside. This helps ensure your health if you intentionally or accidentally enter the water.

DON’T skip wearing a life jacket/buoyancy aid.

DO expect to get wet, even if you do not fall in. Splash up will occur from paddles and some water will get in the boat regardless.

DON’T forget to bring along some snacks and water.

DO bring a fellow kayaker along. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned professional, bringing a friend along ensures someone can go for help if you’re involved in an accident or suffer an injury.

coastline, Florida has hundreds of beaches to choose from.

Florida State Road A1A will take you through Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Cocoa Beach and Daytona. Many beaches in this area are less crowded than the most touristy cities further south, giving you plenty of room to spread out.

ENJOY

CULTURE

AND HISTORY AT NORTHERN FLORIDA BEACH CITIES

A beach road trip gives you the option of splitting time between beach days and inland destinations. As Florida’s largest city and capital, Jacksonville, Florida has museums, nightlife and shopping. St. Augustine, first established by Spanish settlers in 1565, offers a beautiful historic setting.

BEST NORTHERN FLORIDA BEACHES

When you are ready to hit the beach, you have dozens of options between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach. Jacksonville beaches, like Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach, are pet-friendly if your pup is along for the ride. Local restaurants and shops can provide a break from the sand and swimming.

St. Augustine Beach is the perfect stop on a road trip as one of the few beaches that allow you to drive on the beach. Purchase a permit and you can park your car right on the beach, keeping all your gear nearby as you spend the day relaxing in the sun.

Near Kennedy Space Center, Cocoa Beach offers a vantage point for rocket launches that occur

throughout the summer. Then head further south to Daytona Beach - another one where beach driving is allowed - and find a boardwalk with rides and games for family entertainment.

EXPLORE THE SOUTHEAST ALONG THE ATLANTIC COAST

A road trip from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Savannah, Georgia will take you to some of the southern U.S.’s best beaches and historic sites. With 12 hours of driving, you can adjust your trip time based on how many stops you want to make. Start in Virginia Beach, with its famous boardwalk, before heading to the Outer Banks in North Carolina to visit Duck and Nags Head. Further south, get onto Highway 17 and travel along the coast to Myrtle Beach. This vacation destination has all the

beachside and water activities you could want from the beach, as well as a boardwalk, SkyWheel, entertainment and golfing. Historic Charleston and the nearby waterfront community of Mount Pleasant are packed with things to do on a beach road trip. Having your car with you makes it easy to get to local museums, parks and, of course, great beaches like Folly Beach or Isle of Palms. Finish your road trip in Savannah, GA with stops in Beaufort and Hilton Head.

MIX A CITY TRIP WITH A BEACH TRIP IN THE NORTHEAST

If your ideal beach trip includes exploring local cities, a road trip through the Northeast is perfect. You can mix up stops

in metropolitan areas like Philadelphia and New York City with seaside towns like Mystic, Connecticut, and Newport, Rhode Island.

Once in Rhode Island, travel writer Sage Scott from Everyday Wanderer recommends Ocean Drive. She says, “Although it’s just 10 miles long, Rhode Island’s Ocean Drive delivers beautiful views of the Atlantic Ocean as it winds around the southern coast of Aquidneck Island. Start near Fort Adams State Park and end by embracing the Gilded Age gazing at the impressive seaside mansions of Newport.”

If you want a break from the car, take the ferry from Newport to Block Island. With multiple lighthouses, a wildlife preserve and sandy beaches, it’s a great place to stretch your legs at the end of a road trip.

EXPERIENCE

STUNNING VIEWS ON THE PACIFIC COAST HIGHWAY

Highway 1, or the Pacific Coast Highway, is over 600 miles long and offers stops at dozens of beaches in California. Sage Scott explains, “The Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most scenic drives in the U.S. and with good reason. As you hug the Golden State’s rocky coast, you’ll be treated to scenic ocean views and towering mountains.”

Driving the entire highway offers a once-in-a-lifetime trip for those who have time. Shorter segments offer road trips ranging from a few days to a few weeks depending on how long you want to spend in towns along the way.

For a Northern California road trip, travel to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Big Sur State Park for a combination of culture

and scenic views of rugged coasts. Further south, visit Hearst Castle in San Simeon, head to Southern California beaches in Santa Barbara and Santa Monica and finish the trip on Coronado Island in San Diego Bay.

PLAN A BEACH ROAD TRIP THIS SUMMER

Whether you are taking a long weekend or have several weeks, a road trip is the ultimate way to customize your beach vacation. Use these favorite beach trips as your inspiration and add in

experiences that interest you. The beautiful drives and stunning beaches are sure to make your entire trip a memorable one.

Get a good workout outdoors

Exercise goals can be achieved at gyms and fitness clubs, but they are not the only locations where people can get on a healthy track. People who turn to the great outdoors for their fitness needs may find nature is an equally, if not exceedingly, effective setting to get in shape.

The Association for Applied Sport Psychology says as many as 80% of people who begin exercise programs do not stick with them. Seeing progress and reaching goals can be great motivators, as can doing something because it is enjoyable. Utilizing outdoor activities to get in shape can improve people’s chances of exercising regularly. Here are a few ideas to kick-start a new routine.

Kayaking and paddleboarding

Water sports are perfect warm weather activities that build good upper body and core strength. Kayaking and paddleboarding also offer cardiovascular benefits by getting the heart pumping. These water activities offer a great way to exercise that doesn’t often seem like exercise at all.

HIKING

Walking for pleasure gained popularity in Europe during the eighteenth century. Hiking involves taking long, vigorous walks on trails or footpaths. The varied terrain is an excellent cardiovascular exercise and can strengthen the lower body.

PARK CIRCUIT

Many public parks have exercise equipment along trails or walking paths. Individuals can follow a circuit with little to no rest in between. If a park doesn’t have

dedicated equipment, one can use kids’ jungle gym equipment to perform pull-ups, incline pushups, lunges, and additional strengthtraining exercises.

CLIMBING AND SCRAMBLING

Climbing hills and mountains is a challenging way to get in shape and improve physical fitness. Climbing involves working muscles all over

the body. It also requires balance and flexibility.

SPORTS

Volleyball, baseball, tennis, pickleball, and other organized sporting activities can offer aerobic and strength-training benefits. Sports typically are played among a group, and the sense of companionship and good-natured competition that often develops in

such settings can keep participants engaged and having fun.

BEACH WORKOUTS

In addition to ocean swimming, walking or running on the sand adds resistance to movements that can enhance fitness and challenge the heart.

The great outdoors can be a great place to combine exercise with enjoyable activities.
