2015 NORTH CAROLINA STATE TOURNAMENT
Welcome... To the 2015 NCOM State Tournament
W
elcome team members, coaches, officials and guests to the 34th annual North Carolina Odyssey of the mind State Tournament! The North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind State Board joins Appalachian State University in extending a warm welcome to all of you. The Northern Region Board hopes you enjoy the tournament and encourages you to take this opportunity to explore the campus. Each of the teams competing in the tournament advanced here by either earning First Place, Second Place or the coveted Odyssey of the Mind Ranatra Fusca Creativity Award at one of the five regional NCOM tournaments. I know how excited they are to show you their fantastic creative solutions! The Odyssey of the Mind philosophy is based on problem solving, team effort, perseverance and sportsmanship. Divergent and original thinking is rewarded. Judges are trained to look for unusual, creative ideas that relate to the long term problem and in the spontaneous portion of the competition. It is the creativity and risk taking abilities of our students that we value. Judging the teams is a difficult endeavor. Each judge has attended a general overall training ses-
sion and a session for this year’s problem and has judged at one or more regional tournaments. I would like to personally thank the Appalachian State University staff, and the over 230 volunteers who are here to help make the tournament run smoothly and make the event a memorable one for all the team members and guests. I also hope each of you enjoys spending a great spring day in the beautiful North Carolina mountains. North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind offers a special thank-you to all coaches who have dedicated hours to this experience. This is just one more way in which you touch and mold the lives of our youth. In so many ways, you make a difference! Congratulations to all the teams for advancing to the State Tournament, best of luck to all of you – regardless of ranking, you are all winners just for being here! If there is anything I can do to make this a better experience for you or your teams, please let me know. Let the competition begin! Randy Burton Association Director North Carolina Odyssey of the Mind

Congratulations Sloan Blinsink’s pin design selected for a 2015 NCOM pin Congratulations to Sloan Blinsink! Sloan was a team member of the 2014 Problem 3 Division 2 Mount Mourne School team in the Northern Region. Her design was selected from about 25 drawings submitted in the 2014 Northern Region Pin Contest. It was then submitted to the State Board for consideration to become one of the State Pins. We think it’s a great design. We encourage everyone to go by the Sales Area to see it. Maybe you’ll
add it to your pin collection. Good Job, Sloan! If you have an idea for a pin design, draw it on a sheet of paper and give to your coach. Include your name and team information. Coaches can take these drawings to the Sales Area or give to their regional director. Good Luck!

Thank you to this great bunch of people. They spend their own time to study and become experts on their problems organize and train the judging teams, and then oversee multiple competition sites on the day of the tournament. Then they help us clean up and see that the scores are correct. Because they volunteer to do this year after year, our students benefit from their experience! The NCOM Museum A bit about Boone ‘Creativity through the years’
L
ynda McGinty, board member, saves everything to do with Odyssey of the Mind. This began in the early ’80s. Before she knew it, her collection had grown to include news articles, pictures, pin collections, shirts, programs and many other things. With permission from the board of directors, she formed our NCOM Museum. It will be open from 9:00am-3:00pm on Saturday. The location is the upper concourse of Holmes, the building where sales are located and where the Awards Ceremony will be held. Present and former “Omers” can enjoy seeing many items and displays from our state tournaments, World Finals and International countries. There is quite a collection. Our Association Directors from 1982 until 2015 are recognized. NCOM has five regions, and the Regional Boards will be featured, too. The Memorial Award shirts given to winning teams, coaches and officials from NCOM who will be officials at the World Finals in East Lansing, Michigan on the Michigan State campus. The shirts are given in memory of Lynda’s Mother, Dad, and brother who died of Lou Gehrig’s Disease, ALS. The shirts have been given since 1992. Our whole delegation wears the shirt on opening night, and our team representatives who march in the opening parade, look sharp and make us proud. PINS, PINS, PINS. You will see many vests full of pins. Each vest is from a World Finals Tournament. NCOM T-shirts will be on
display. They are creative and always sought after during shirt trading at World. One special section of the museum will be selling tickets for the Lester Carter Memorial pin vest. Your donation for tickets may earn you the pin vest covered with pins Lester collected at different World Finals. Lester died in November of 2013. His wife, Dr. Athelene Carter, will present the Lester and Athelene Carter Scholarship at the Awards Ceremony. The pin vest drawing will be at the beginning of the Awards ceremony. The money donated for tickets will go to NCOM’s Scholarship Fund. See you at the museum!
Souvenir Sales Do you have some down time between your performance and spontaneous competition? Well, make sure to visit our Souvenirs Sales in The Holmes Center. We have state T-shirts and state pins as well as pins from each region for sale. This will be the only opportunity for most teams to buy these items. There will also be a wide selection of OM hats, bags and classic T-shirts for sale — as well as some very trendy purple OM earrings! Don’t miss your chance to take home a souvenir of your experience with OM this year! Sales hours are 8:30am-4pm.
BY ANNA OAKES Framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains, the town of Boone anchors the High Country as the region’s economic center, the home of one of the largest state universities in the University of North Carolina system and the site of diverse cultural activities. The town of Boone was incorporated in 1872, acquiring its name from the famous pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, who hunted and camped in the area. According to recent Census estimates, the population of Boone was 18,089, an increase of 3.8 percent from the 2010 Census. Boone has the highest elevation (3,300 feet) of any town of its size (greater than 10,000 population) east of the Mississippi River. Boone serves as the county seat of Watauga County, and town limits cover approximately six square miles. Travelers access Boone via U.S. 421, U.S. 321 and U.S. 221, which provide access to Interstates 40, 77, 85, 81 and 26. Also nearby is the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic
mountain road that traverses 469 miles in North Carolina and Virginia. Free transportation around town is provided by the AppalCART transit service, with additional routes in the county available for a small fee. Town and regional leaders continue work to make the area more walkable and bikeable, including efforts to add more sidewalks and bike lanes. A couple of electric car charging stations are located in town, as well. Located off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Boone’s location and climate contribute to a strong tourism base and provide yearround opportunities for residents and visitors to enjoy sports and outdoor activities. The town is also home to Appalachian State University, which currently has approximately 18,000 students, the Appalachian Regional Medical Center and a variety of tourist and cultural attractions and businesses, which increase the town’s population to an estimated 35,000 on a daily basis.

2015 NORTH CAROLINA STATE TOURNAMENT
Problem 1: Runaway ‘Train’ Divisions I, II, & III The team’s problem is to design, build and operate one or more vehicles that will travel on tracks and make stops at different stations without touching the floor. While traveling between stations, the vehicles must overcome obstacles — moving uphill, towing something and more. The theme of the performance will explain the vehicle’s difficulties on the track and will include a “conductor” character. Once the vehicle reaches its final destination it will display a flag or banner during a victory lap! Cost limit: $145 USD.

Problem 4: Lose Your Marbles Divisions I, II, III & IV This problem requires teams to design, build and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue, that will balance and support as much weight as possible. The structure will also hold five marbles that will be released during weight placement as a result of a team-created device removing a piece of the structure. After the crusher board and one additional weight are placed on top of the structure, the first marble will be released. After the next weight is supported, the team will use its device to release another marble, and so on. The team will incorporate weight placement and “losing your marbles” into the theme of the performance. Cost limit: $145 USD.

Problem 5: Silent Movie Divisions I, II, III & IV Lights, camera ... action! In this problem teams will create and present a performance depicting a Director character that produces and presents a silent movie featuring a humorous villain character that commits three silly acts of “villainy.” Characters that are in the movie may not speak as part of the presentation of the movie. Instead, like classic silent films, the team will use music played on a team-created instrument and creatively displayed subtitles to convey its story to the audience and judges. Also, teams will use a signal to indicate when the movie begins and ends. Cost limit: $125 USD.
