WINE SEMINARS Learning never tasted so good

T

he more you know about wine, food, beer and spirits, the more you acquire the skills to put together amazing pairings for parties and dinners. SAVOR Blowing Rock has outdone itself this year with more than two dozen seminars and tastings. Subjects range from Bordeaux to moonshine, so there is something for everyone. Be sure to sign up for these seminars as soon as you find the ones you are interested in, because they have a tendency to fill up quickly. Here’s a look at some of the interesting seminars, tastings and workshops on tap at SAVOR 2017:

Thursday, April 20 EXPLORING THE RHONE VALLEY 11 a.m. to Noon at Sunset and Vine The Rhone Valley wine region, once the hidden secret of France, is now well known for having some of the top vineyards in the world, and these wines are increasingly becoming more available around the world. The Rhone wines are some of the most exciting and expensive wines in the world, however they are known for producing great wines of value. And although known primarily for red wines, the Rhone Valley does produce some rich and powerful white wines. Doug May will lead this tasting and seminar. The cost is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

MICHAEL DAVID WINES 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine You may not know it, but you’ve probably encountered one of the far-ranging family of wines from Michael David Winery, the largest winery operation in the fast-emerging Lodi appellation of California’s Central Valley. There’s a reason why Michael David Winery is capturing America’s attention. The wines are flavorful and fun. Michael David Winery’s success is firmly rooted in its rich, jammy and uniquely named Zinfandels and tasty Cabernet Sauvignons. Joy Dixon will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

BLENDS FROM AROUND THE WORLD 2 to 3 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Who doesn’t love a good blend? Wine blends have been around for centuries. Ask any winemaker what the purpose of blending is, and they will most likely answer that they are trying to make a wine greater than the sum of its parts. In this tasting, guests will sample Old and New World wines that will showcase the varietal diversity of the grapes from the different wine growing regions. Doug May will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

the farm to the barrel to the bottle and finally to the glass. Admission is $25 per person. For reservations, call (828) 295-4300.

THE AROMA OF WINE 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine The aroma of wine is a key component of the total wine tasting experience. The aroma can be fruity, floral, citrus, earthy or any number of scents depending on the grape variety used and the winemaking process implemented. In this seminar, Sommelier Anne Prevatte will talk about some of the common aromas of wine. Guests will smell and taste different wine varietals, then smell different items that are commonly described in the wine’s aroma. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

WHAT MAKES VODKA VODKA AND THE DISTILLATION OF SPIRITS 4 to 5 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn This is the type of class you wish you could have taken in school. Guests will learn about the distillation of spirits all through history and what make vodka vodka. They will also get to taste Spur vodka made from North Carolina muscadines and leave with a copper shot glass souvenir. John Holman will lead the tasting and seminar. Holman is the founder of the American Alcohollery. Admission is $35 per person. For reservations, call (828) 295-4300.

MONTES WINERY WINES FROM FARM TO BARREL TO BOTTLE 3 to 4 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn There is so much more to good wine than grapes. The barrel, the type of wood used to make the barrel, the charring of the wood—all affect the wine’s taste as much as the varietal and ripeness of the grapes. Even the bottle shape makes a difference. Joey Medaloni of Medaloni Cellars will lead this very informative seminar that takes you from

5 to 6 p.m. at Sunset and Vine With the release of the first Montes Alpha wine back in 1988, Montes became one of the first premium wineries of Chile. They built their winery on the belief that Chile had an untapped potential as a producer of quality wines, and since have become a benchmark for other wineries to

Phillip Bruch will lead the tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

ELYSE WINERY TASTING 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Ray and Nancy Coursen started Elyse Winery in 1987 with 286 cases of Zinfandel. After a decade of nomadic winemaking at various custom crush facilities, in 1997 they purchased a small winery and vineyard on Hoffman Lane, the home of Elyse Winery and tasting room. From that point on, the Elyse portfolio expanded and Elyse Winery began to produce Petite Sirah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Rhone style reds. Michelle Duckett, National Sales and Marketing Manager for Elyse Winery, will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $32 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

Friday, April 21 WINE & CHEESE 10 to 11 a.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn Cheese and wine seem to made for each other. While many combinations are quite enjoyable, certain pairings really excite your taste buds. In this seminar we will explore the fundamentals of wine and cheese harmony and help you determine what cheese pairs best with your favorite wine. Catherine Rabb, associate instructor at

“GRAPES THAT DON’T BELONG” WINE TASTING 11 a.m. to noon at Sunset and Vine Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley; Pinot Noir from France and Oregon; Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand. We are all familiar with the grapes that grow well in certain regions, however, there are grapes that are being successfully grown outside of these traditional regions. This seminar will explore wines crafted from grapes grown in regions such as Germany and Paso Robles. Brian Mockler of Epiphany Wines will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

BEST WINES UNDER $20 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Wines under $20 are easy to find, but sorting out some of the best from the rest can be tricky business. What do you look for when trying to find these gems? Is vintage important? What about region? In this tasting, we will showcase some of these great wines—all exceptional value wines from around the world. Phillip Bruch will discuss what makes these wines his top picks. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

WORLD CUP OF WINE: OLD WORLD VS. NEW WORLD 2 to 3 p.m. at Sunset and Vine “New World” and “Old World” are widely used terms to describe a style of wine or winemaking. Old World wines are traditionally more “terroir” and structure driven. New World wines are typically more fruit forward and varietal driven. In this tasting we will go through the differences between Old World and New World philosophies, styles, regulatory controls and quality. Brian Mockler will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9111.

HOW TO THE STOCK THE BAR WITH NORTH CAROLINA SPIRITS 11 a.m. to noon at the Green Park Inn We all want to buy local and to support local. Well, we can drink local too! Rich Scheurer, a local bartender who has garnered regional attention, will guide guests on how to stock their home bars using North Carolina distilled spirits and other local products. Did you know there are more than 40 distillers in North Carolina? They produce all manner of spirits including gin, rum, vodka, whiskey and moonshine, of course. This seminar will be located inside the Divide Tavern at the Green Park Inn. Admission is $35 per person. For reservations, call (828) 414-9230.

WINES OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST A TASTE OF SOUTH AFRICA 2 to 3 p.m. at the Meadowbrook Inn Take a journey through The Cape and experience a bucket list of wine tastings and history dating back 300 years. Your trek will begin with a Method Cape Classique sparkler and a focus on Cape Town and Dorrance Wines. Then travel to Stellenbosch and Swartland for a taste of the Wines of Jordan. 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine The wines of the Pacific Northwest are familiar to aficionados of California wine but the scale, focus and viticulture of Oregon and Washington are unique and distinct from California. Oregon focuses its attention on the traditional Burgundian varieties of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as Pinot Gris. Washington focuses more on premium table wine as opposed to bulk wine production. Tom Champine from Montinore Estates and Revelry Vintners will lead this tasting and seminar. All of the wines we will taste will have scored 90 points or more. Joy Dixon of Empire Distributing will lead this tasting and seminar. Admission is $28 per person. Chetola Resort’s Corkscrew & Brew 5K

C

ombine your love of wine, craft brews and running in the name of a great charity. To date, more than 140 participants have already signed up for Chetola Resort’s Corkscrew & Brew 5K (formerly known as the Corkscrew 5K), which returns for its 5th year beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, bringing craft beer to the race tables courtesy of the award-winning Boone-based Appalachian Mountain Brewery. Fast becoming one of the signature events of the SAVOR Blowing Rock festival (April 20-23), the race takes a page out of the festival’s mission of celebrating the area’s best food and drink, with a division featuring four “hydrating” stations with the runner’s choice of a shot of Timberlake’s wine or AMB beer (must be 21 or older with ID). Because not everyone likes an early morning booze run, the Corkscrew & Brew also serves up a Wine & Beer Free division for those folks who don’t have the “it’s 5-o’clock somewhere” mentality, but relish the spirited atmosphere and the scenic course. The race once again welcomes the return of veteran race emcee Gary Butts and professional timing by Andrew Marsh’s Event Mercenaries, Inc. Butts has been

with the race since its inaugural debut in 2013, when 97 people tackled the course for the first time. Over the years the race has grown to include more than 200 people and has raised $7,000 that has been distributed to local organizations include the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation and the Blowing Rock Chapter of Girls on the Run. Proceeds from this year’s event will go towards helping the family of Luke Sponds, a 3-year-old from Valle Crucis with spastic, quadriplegia cerebral palsy, purchase a service dog to aid in Luke’s socialization and interaction at home and school. Luke’s mother, Saskia van de Gevel-Spond, says her son “loves reading board books, hiking in a stroller, and swinging at Valle Crucis Community Park,” but that Luke “has difficulty with motor skills and oral communication, needing assistance to sit, stand or walk.” With Luke craving independence but struggling with mobility, “Our hope,” said van de Gevel-Spond, “is a highly, specially trained dog could assist Luke with mobility in a wheelchair or in a walker. The mobility assistance dog could help Luke open doors, pick up objects and carry his school backpack. It would help our family feel secure that Luke will be able to be with the caring, service dog at school

Find Your New Favorite Wine at the Reserve Tasting

O

ne of the most popular events at SAVOR Blowing Rock is the Reserve Wine Tasting on Saturday. In fact, it regularly sells out. This year, the two Reserve Wine Tasting events will be held at the Inn at Ragged Gardens on Sunset Drive from noon to 2 p.m. and from 3 to 5 p.m. Admission is $125 in advance and $150 at the door. Hosted by Blue Ridge Mountain Club, each Reserve Tasting will feature 12 to 15 wines from international, national and local wineries. This year’s featured wine providers are Witchery Wines, Burch Family Wines and a selection of French-themed wines. Witchery Wines said of their selection, “You’re probably thinking, magic, mystery and/or broomsticks right now. Understandable. But that’s not our Witchery. Ours traces its roots to the word’s first use in 1546, back when it mean simply ‘an irresistible fascination.’” Burch Family Wines stated, “We invite you to enjoy the pursuit of these two friends: Frenchman and Burgundian winemaker and biodynamic ambassador Pascal Marchand ex-regisdseur from Domaine Park and MadFish Wines with small parcels of hand-crafted Australian wines from carefully selected fruit parcels from vineyards in both Margaret River and the Great Southern in Western Australia.” French-themed wines at the Reserve Tasting will include NV Reserve Charles Gilbert Brut Champagne, 2014 Bichot Montagny Cru Blanch Burgundy, 2010 Tantara Old Vine Pinot Noir and the 2012 Calluna Estate Red, Chalk Hill. To reserve tickets for the Reserve Wine Tasting, call the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce at (828) 295-7851.
