Wine Seminars T
Learning never tasted so good
he more you know about wine, food, beer and spirits, the more you acquire the skills to put together amazing pairings for parties and dinners. SAVOR Blowing Rock offers a number of different seminars and tastings. Although wine is the primary focus, others cover moonshine and other spirits. Seminars have a tendency to fill up quickly, so signing up for one that interests you is imperative. Here’s a look at some of the interesting seminars, tastings and workshops on tap at SAVOR 2018:
Thursday, May 3 Lodi: Wine Region of the Year 12 to 1 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Lodi’s growing reputation for the wines it produces has captured the attention of Wine Enthusiast magazine. The magazines’ editors named Lodi “Wine Region of the Year” in 2015, and in this seminar you will find out why. With more than 100 varieties currently being cultivated, Lodi offers a diverse portfolio of wines. While long renowned for its high-quality Zinfandel production, the area also produces award-winning Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Chardonnay, among many other new varietals. Joy Dixon of Empire Distributing will lead us through tasting and learning more about this highly rated region. The cost is $26 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
Wine and Chocolate Seminar 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Meadowbrook Inn’s Summit Room Not only are wine and chocolate delicious, but as excellent sources of antioxidants, they are really good for you. In this seminar you will learn which chocolates best accompany a specific type of wine and vice versa. Get ready to indulge in some incredible pairings of two of the world’s favorite guilty (or maybe not so guilty) pleasures. Taught by Catherine Rabb, associate instructor in the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University. Cost is $25 a person. Tickets available at ticketweb.com, keyword “chocolate and wine” or in person at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce at 132 Park Ave., Blowing Rock. For more information, call (828) 295-4300.
South Africa: Old World or New World? 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine South Africa is conventionally thought of as part of the New World based mainly

on geography. But wine has been made in South Africa for more than 350 years and some of the vineyards have been farmed for six or seven generations — longer than a lot of Old World vineyards. And South African wines are often quite a tantalizing mix between the New World and Old World styles. In this seminar we will taste and discuss South African wine as Doug May leads us through discussing this question. Cost is $26 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
Wine and Cupcake Pairing 3 to 4 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Everyone loves a cupcake, and everyone loves a good glass of wine. However, many of us have not experienced the joy of pairing the two together. Did you know that there are actual wine pairings specifically suited for different flavors of cupcakes? So how can you figure out what wine to drink with what cupcake? Natalie Nicastro will lead us through this fun and tasty seminar. Cost is $28 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
Cabernet Sauvignon Challenge 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Sunset and Vine
Have you ever been amazed by a Sommelier’s ability to tell where, when, and how a wine was made by just a sip? In this seminar you will learn how to use key components of the wine such as the nose, legs and body to help determine the wines’ origin. Phillip Bruch of Mutual Distributing will discuss the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. We will taste Cabernet from different growing regions, and you will determine where each wine is from. Cost is $28 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
Friday, May 4 Columbia Valley –The Heart of Washington State 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sunset and Vine Columbia Valley is responsible for nearly all the wine from Washington State. It is Washington’s largest AVA (American Viticultural Area), covering nearly 11 million acres and representing a full third of the size of Washington State. Because it is such a large AVA, referring to Columbia Valley in general doesn’t adequately describe the diversity of soils and microclimates that exist within it. In this seminar we will
discuss the diversity that exists within this AVA as we taste through some of their outstanding wines. Josh Bohlen of Grapevine Distributing will lead us through this discussion and wine tasting. Cost is $28 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
Wine and Spice Seminar 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Medowbrook Inn The spice is right! With so many spices, foods, and wines available from all over the world on today’s market, the old adage of red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat just doesn’t always hold true. I this seminar learn about how to pair wine with the different spices found in food. Use this modern pairing method at your next dinner party, and your guests will be asking how you came up with such an excellent pairing. Taught by Catherine Rabb, associate instructor in the College of Culinary Arts at Johnson and Wales University. Cost is $30 a person. Tickets available at ticketweb.com, keyword “wine and spice” or in person at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce at 132 Park SEE SEMINARS ON PAGE 4

Saturday, May 5 Wine in the Andes 12 to 1 p.m. at Sunset and Vine With a rich tradition in the grape-growing and wine-making culture, Argentina has always been known for its everyday value wines. In the past 20 years, it has developed a reputation for producing quality, fine wines as well. In comparison, over the past few decades, it would be hard to find a wine region that has expanded as quickly as Chile. Historically known as makers of cheap, affordable and very reliable wines, Chile is starting to expand its styles, regions and varieties. In this seminar, we will taste and discuss wines from Estate Vineyards in both countries, and talk about the differences between them. Woody French of 3 Keys Distributing will lead us through this tasting. Cost is $26 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
French Winemakers of California 3 to 4 p.m. at Sunset and Vine French winemakers are moving to North America and investing in vineyards located in Napa Valley. A perfect example is Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who partnered with Robert Mondavi to create the acclaimed Opus One. This move has picked up pace in recent years, fortifying Napa’s reputation as a global brand that produces fine wine. In this seminar, we will discuss what this French migration mean for the wines that will be coming out of Napa in the coming years as we taste through a selection of these wines. Woody French of 3 Keys Distributing will lead us through this tasting. Cost is $28 per person. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.

Gary Woolard, Chetola’s wellness director, said that with the weekend change, the event could take a hit this year in number of runners due to it being Cinco de Mayo weekend. Last year, the proceeds from Corkscrew and Brew 5K went to Luke Sponds, who suffered from spastic quadripledia cerebral paulsey, to help his family purchase a service dog to aid in Luke’s socialization and interaction at home. “They pushed him in a stroller during the race, some of the App State football players were here surrounding him and it was just really cool,” West said. “When you can take a really fun event and turn it into something char-

Dinner connects town and gown
I
t comes as no surprise that Appalachian State is one of the foundations that make Watauga County unique from neighboring communities in the High Country, including Blowing Rock. Since its founding in 1899, Appalachian State has seen its share of students, faculty and friends pass through its halls. Founded as a college to train teachers to educate students in the Appalachian Mountains, it has evolved into a university with more than 18,000 students that offers 176 undergraduate and 42 graduate majors. It also offers a doctoral degree in educational leadership. At SAVOR, Blowing Rock on May 4, Appalachian State will have a Black and Gold dinner at the main tent from 6-8 p.m. The president of the
Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce and the owner of the Blowing Rock Market David Barker is behind the idea of hosting the event. “Every event at Savor this year is meant to have some kind of tie to what makes Blowing Rock the place that it is,” Barker said. “Thursday night is the taste dinner, which features all of the restaurants in Blowing Rock and celebrating the culinary world we have in town. We added a cycling race, for all of the outdoor recreation we have here. One
of the things that makes ASU pretty cool is we have a university eight miles away. It’s a good thing for us. I’m an ASU alumni, there are quite a few of us here and there’s a lot of financial supporters of ASU here, so the dinners is designed to recognize the ties between the two.” Barker said that some VIPs will make it to the dinner, including head football coach Scott Satterfield and his wife Beth. Barker said retiring track and field coordinator John Weaver will also be in attendance, as well as several department heads of the university. Barker is hopeful that 200 people will attend the event. Students from different departments at App State will also be servers for the event. “We’re getting close to that right now,” he said. ‘We’ve got several people involved in athletics and
academics who will be there.” Barker said putting the dinner together will be a team effort. He said there are 10 interns from the hospitality department at the chamber who will work on the SAVOR project. The fact that there are a number of App State students who work in Blowing Rock was another reason to host the dinner. That gave Barker the idea of the chamber starting a scholarship fund that would go to an employee who works at a Blowing Rock business who is a student at Appalachian State. It would be funded by the process generated from that dinner. Barker said the details have not been finalized yet. He is hopeful that a silent auction can be set up to help raise funding for the scholarship. “We’ll work out the details as to how long they
have to work and all that stuff,” he said. “Probably, business would nominate one of their employees for the award, so they could get some help with tuition.” Barker said the food service at App State would provide the meals. The band that will play at the event is headed by a Morganton dentist who is also
an App State alumni. “Everything from the food and the beer and the wine, the distillery, even the band — everybody involved in this is ASU alumni,” Barker said. “It has a really good ASU tie to it and I think it’s something that moving forward can be something we can run with over the next few years.”

The Blowing Rock Charity Horse Show dates back to 1923 and is one of the oldest continuously running horse shows in the country. “Any event we have is paying homage to things that make Blowing Rock cool,” said Blowing Rock Chamber Chairman David Barker. “Horses, Hats and Hooch is paying homage to the oldest horse show in eastern north America.” The Horses, Hats and Hooch event will be a Kentucky Derby themed cocktail party, as it falls on the same day as the Derby. The chamber invites everyone to come out and celebrate both the past and present in grand style.
If You Go Horses, Hats and Hooch When: May 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. Where: 132 Park Ave., Blowing Rock Cost: $35 in advance or $40 at the door The event will feature a Blowing Rock version of a Kentucky hot brown dish, Mint Julep drinks, deviled eggs, pimento cheese and other heavy hors d’oeuvres, Barker said. Attendees will be able to watch the Kentucky Derby race as it airs at 6:30 p.m.,
Barker said. He said people have been calling in hoping attendees will dress up for the occasion and wear their best Derby hat. This event will be located at 132 Park Ave. on the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce lawn. Tickets are $35 in advanced or $40 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online at www. ticketweb.com/event/ horses-hats-hooch-blowing-rock-chamber-of-commerce-tickets/8175705?REFID=clientsitewp.
The event formerly known as the grand tasting is being revamped as the Culinary Village, offering a wide variety of food and drink with a local flavor. “The culinary village offers live demonstrations with various experts in artisanal meats, farm-fresh produce, exotic spice blends, elixirs, pairing wines, micro-brewed beer, and small-batch distilled spirits,” says David Barker, SAVOR committee chair and organizer of the Culinary Village event.
Just like it’s predecessor, the culinary village will take place in the tent behind First Citizen’s Bank on Main Street on Saturday afternoon in the Maple Street parking lot. One aspect of the village in 2018 is all products available under the tent are North Carolina based, celebrating the state’s many food and drink creators. Hours are 12 p.m. until 4 p.m. Tickets are $50 in advance, $60 day of the event and can be purchased online at savorblowingrock.com/tickets, or in person at the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce at 132 Park Ave., Blowing Rock.

Jim Avett to perform at ‘Gospel, Grits and Gravy’
T
hrough no fault of his own, North Carolina musician Jim Avett is probably best known as the father of Seth and Scott Avett of the Avett Brothers Band. After all, Jim’s boys have taken their grassroots, Americana sound from the Avett hometown of Concord, N.C., to a national, and even international stage. That’s all right with Jim Avett. The elder Avett continues to explore his own sound and draw upon old time American influences such as Jimmie Rodgers, Bob Dylan and Merle Haggard. After retiring from a career in welding, Avett began to take his hobby of making music more seriously and has released three albums of music. He also performs at a number of clubs and regional festivals including MerleFest in Wilkesboro. Jim Avett will take the stage as the featured performer at SAVOR Blowing Rock’s inaugural “Gospel, Grits and Gravy” event, taking place at the main tent on Maple Street from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 6. Avett will perform with a number of outstanding local and regional gospel choir members.
