SEMINAR AT SUNSET & VINE: A TASTE OF PORTUGAL THURSDAY, MAY 2, AT 1-2 P.M., $26 150 SUNSET DRIVE, BLOWING ROCK In a world long dominated by France, Spain and Italy, Portugal’s wines seem to have finally emerged from the shadows. Portugal has more than 200 indigenous grapes, and most of these are not grown anywhere outside the country. So, while the more well-known grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay have gotten much attention, Portugal has been making lesser known — yet no less impressive — wines at affordable prices. These wines of Portugal are a magnificent discovery. Bennett Larsen will lead us through learning more about this region, as we taste through a selection of their wines. Seminar at Sunset & Vine. Call for reservations at (828) 414-9111.
SEMINAR AT SUNSET & VINE: AMADOR COUNTY: A WINE LOVER’S PARADISE THURSDAY, MAY 2, AT 2:30-3:30 PM $26 150 SUNSET DRIVE, BLOWING ROCK Amador is old vine country; more than 500 acres of the county’s vines are at least 60 years old, and several vineyards date to the 19th century. Nestled in the heart of Gold Country, this region is known for its rich history and rich reds. The region is defined by the cool Shenandoah Valley in the northern part of the county, where vineyards stretch from 1,200 to 2,400 feet above sea level. The rolling hills feature soil suitable for varieties such as Barbera and Sangiovese, as well as more robust varietals like Zinfandel. In this seminar we will discuss the history of Amador County wine while tasting several of the wines from this area. Doug May will lead us through this seminar. Seminar at Sunset & Vine. Call for reservations at (828) 414.9111.

Wine to Water to host art show, wine tasting and film screening at SAVOR BY THOMAS SHERRILL thomas.sherrill@blowingrocket.com
The evening of Friday, May 3, from 4-8 p.m. will bring a new event to SAVOR, as Boone-based clean water nonprofit Wine to Water will be hosting an evening of art, wine and film at the American Legion Hall, located at 333 Wallingford St. “When you drink Bodewell wine or purchase an original art piece, you are also providing clean water to people around the world,” a statement from Wine to Water on the event said. “For us, wine represents the community that gathers around a table or a well installation.” The art show will feature art by Jacob Daniels and Sir Tom Foolery, a Bodewell
wine tasting with Wine to Water sommelier Jared Seitzer and premiere of Wine to Water’s newly released short feature film “I Can. I Do.” Screenings will be at 5 and 7 p.m. “Fighting the global water crisis is more than bringing clean water to those in need: when clean water flows, that is just the beginning,” the film’s description states. “The stories you are about to see capture the spirit of life in service, and the passion for a healthy community. Our hope is not only that you will enjoy these stories, but be inspired to create more of your own.” “There are so many humble servants in our midst that shy away from the spotlight. They don’t do their passionate, important
work for the attention, they simply feel deeply called and responsible for their work,” said Matt Rath, director and producer of “I Can. I Do.” “It’s always an honor to present the stories of these kind of people to the world. As a filmmaker, it is my honor and responsibility to get out of the way and show these folks for the rockstars they truly are. Meeting and learning from Radha, Roshani, and Jhonny was a personal inspiration and it’s my hope that whoever views this may feel equally inspired and ignited for their work. The title ‘I Can, I Do,’ is so fitting to me because I believe we all have gifts we are blessed with. When we keep those blessings to ourselves we feel the yearning that is to share them with others to

Glenn and Lula Bollick receive the 2018 North Carolina Heritage Award BY REAGAN DELLINGER reagan.dellinger@mountaintimes.com
Two local potters were named recipients of the 2018 North Carolina Heritage Award for excellence in contributions to our state’s cultural vitality in June 2018. Glenn and Lula Bolick, residents of the Blackberry Community near Blowing Rock, received recognition for bringing multiple mountain and Piedmont traditions into the 21st century. Glenn and Lula have been married for 43 years and making pottery ever since. The Heritage Award is a prestigious award that few artists receive every two years. This year, there were six award winners and the recipients were announced and recognized by Gov. Roy Cooper. Glenn and Lula were nominated for the award by an Appalachian State professor several years ago. “There are so many deserving artists in North Carolina, so we didn’t ever believe we would be recipients,” said Glenn. “When an artist is nominated for the award, they stay on the nomination list until they are picked, even if they stay on the list forever. When we found out this year that we had received the award, we just couldn’t believe it.” Lula, a fifth-generation potter, grew up in Moore County, where her father and grandfather were wellknown potters in the community. In the late 1800s her great-grandfather opened Owens Pottery, the oldest pottery shop in the U.S. Lula met her husband, Glenn, at a drive-in diner in Asheboro while he was working in the Piedmont. Glenn is a fifth-generation sawmiller who grew up in

Caldwell County. When the two got married, Lula taught Glenn her family pottery tradition. “He had never seen pottery before I met him,” said Lula. After getting married, Glenn and Lula both made pottery at Lula’s family pottery shop. In addition to pottery, Lula’s family was very musical. Lula plays guitar and sings, so she and her family taught Glenn how to play a guitar. In 1973, Lula and Glenn moved to their current home in Caldwell County, where they started Bolick Pottery. Since then, the two have worked hard to keep the family tradition alive by teaching the craft to their daughter, Janet Calhoun, and their son-inlaw, Mike.
Janet and Mike now have a pottery shop of their own in Blowing Rock called Traditions Pottery. “We try to stick to a lot of the traditional shapes that my grandfather and dad made,” said Lula. These shapes consist of soup and cereal bowls, plates, candle holders and the popular face jugs. The family makes several different types of jugs with various unique faces on them. Glenn said that face jugs used to be made with strictly scary-looking faces. The tradition all started in the 17th century, when slaves made the jugs to ward any evil spirits away. “We have many different types of faces on our jugs now. Although, most of the faces we make are happy ones,” said Glenn.
