ven though the small town of West Jefferson has grown by leaps and bounds during the years, the town began as nothing more than 320 acres of land given to Col. Ben Cleveland for his struggle in the Battle of Kings Mountain. The land was granted to Cleveland by Gov. Richard Caswell in 1779, but that’s only where the story begins. Throughout the 1800s, mining was Ashe County’s No. 1 industry, outside of agriculture. But where the mountains provided a bounty of mineral wealth, they also made transporting ore off the mountain difficult. The Abingdon Coal & Iron Railroad was chartered in 1887 to haul the mineral riches of the mountains, but was crippled by the depression of 1892. Through a long series of transactions, the Norfolk & Western Railway came to completely acquire the Virginia-Carolina railway from Wilton Egerton Mingea by 1919. This line was renamed the “Virginia Creeper.” Because the creeper transported lumber, the path was made for trees to be cleared from Ashe County, particularly from land that would soon house West Jefferson.

West Jefferson was officially chartered in 1915. At the time, many thought the Virginia Creeper would be extended through Jefferson, which was then the largest town in Ashe County. However, N&W officials soon found they could save $50,000 by setting their depot a couple of miles southwest of Jefferson. West Jefferson became the new terminus for the Virginia Creeper, which hauled important commodities such as farm products, livestock, furniture and mail. Things continued smoothly until flooding damaged much of the rail line in 1977. The Norfolk & Western Railway abandoned the Virginia Creeper, and the rail line was removed. Though the train passed silently into history, its impact on the growth of West Jefferson is undeniable. During the years, West Jefferson has reshaped itself into a more modern town, with murals and art galleries around every corner, and seasonal festivals. The town now has a variety of unique shops for area residents and visitors alike, and has been recognized for top-notch street design. For more information about West Jefferson’s history, call the Museum of Ashe County History at (336) 846-1904.

Centennial events celebrate town’s birthday BY JAMES HOWELL

est Jefferson is celebrating its 100th birthday in 2015 with a variety of fun activities, which kicked off with a huge birthday party at West Jefferson United Methodist Church on Feb. 9. “We were all quite overwhelmed with the response to the birthday party,” said centennial coordinator Lynn Rees-Jones. “On just a cold winter night, we had 350 people come out, and that was very special.” According to Rees-Jones, her favorite centennial event was the Sock Hop, because the event was well received and it brought people back home to West Jefferson. The Sock Hop was a street dancing event that took place at the Main Stage in downtown West Jefferson on Aug. 1. “Some of the events, while we haven’t had overwhelming numbers, the quality has always been really good,” Rees-Jones said. “I think the quality of all the events has been top-notch.” Another event that was well received by the community was the Centennial Car Show, which was held on May 30 in West

Jefferson. The car show featured classic cars from old Corvettes, to Mustangs, to Skylines. More events commemorating West Jefferson’s centennial will be held throughout the 2015 year. For example, on Sept. 19, checker enthusiasts will test their skills against each other in and old-timey checkers tournament to take place in West Jefferson. An even bigger event will be the burying of a time capsule in October. This time capsule will be buried and opened later in the year 2115. “We will place things in the time capsule that are representative of West Jefferson in 2015,” Rees-Jones said. “Things that represent the technology of today, so when it’s opened in 50 or 100 years, people will look back and think about what life was like.” Other centennial events include the following:

• WEST JEFFERSON CENTENNIAL PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST — All photographers are invited to capture images of West Jefferson during the summer months for entry into the contest. Photos will be juried in

uring the years, the Ashe campus of Wilkes Community College has been a solid community partner for West Jefferson, and a perfect example is the job training recently provided to GE Aviation. On July 9, 2013, GE Aviation, a global leader in jet engine and aircraft system production, announced a $58 million investment in its West Jefferson facility, adding 105 new positions at an average wage of $47,000. The new facility is part of a larger commitment by GE Aviation to invest $195 million across its North Carolina operations through 2017. In order to prepare for the expansion, GE Aviation partnered with Wilkes Community College in March 2014 to develop and implement a customized training program. Ginger Shaffer, chairwoman of workforce development at WCC, is representing the college in this partnership. Chris Bare, director of industry and trade services for the Ashe campus, was appointed as the primary trainer for the GE project. “I’m delighted that GE partnered with Wilkes Community

College to give local workers the opportunity to gain the necessary skills to fill these new jobs,” Shaffer said. “This expansion will have positive ripple effects throughout this region for a long time to come. But bringing this massive project to realization wouldn’t have been possible without the many committed team members involved.” The customized training program’s plan includes pre-hire training, post-hire training and incumbent training. The total training package offered by WCC and funded through the N.C. Community College System is approximately $1.2 million, including training, equipment and space rental. In fall 2014, the college was awarded a $198,000 grant for equipment for the training program from the Golden LEAF Foundation. Included in the grant was training equipment for Ashe County High School to build a pipeline of students to the college and then on to GE. WCC offered its first training course for GE in December 2014. This was phase one of the incumbent worker training program. All 143 potential workers completed this portion of the training by February 2015. Wilkes Community College, a

omebuyers are drawn to West Jefferson from a variety of standpoints. For some, West Jefferson is an ideal mountain getaway; for some, the town is a destination for a second home; and for others, West Jefferson is an excellent place to settle down. Fortunately, West Jefferson’s great climate and welcoming nature make the town perfect for all three options. For second home buyers, one of the main concerns is the view. Real estate on mountainsides or near water often offers the best views, and West Jefferson is surrounded by beautiful mountains, lakes and rivers. According to real estate experts, many second home buyers are looking for areas that are different from where they lived in

uring the years, West Jefferson’s downtown art district has grown dramatically, with a variety of artist studios, historic murals, painted fire hydrants and more. The Ashe County Arts Council and the Florence Thomas Art School serve as the centerpieces for many artists throughout the region, showcasing many exhibits, workshops and programs. The ACAC was founded in 1977 and was designed to focus on promoting the arts to Ashe County residents and visitors alike. It coordinates and facilitates many of the cultural events in the area.

GALLERY CRAWLS On the second Friday of every month, the ACAC hosts West Jefferson’s Gallery Crawl from June through October. The crawls are popular events with art galleries, restaurants and artists, welcoming everyone throughout the evening, with most businesses staying open later than usual. Art mediums and other items found during the crawls include photography, painting, antiques, pottery, stained glass, handmade crafts, quilts, jewelry and more. The ACAC works in conjunction with the West Jefferson Business Association and the West Jefferson Tourism Development Authority.

BARN QUILTS The ACAC got members of the community together in 2005, with funding assistance from HandMade in America, to create its first barn quilt. A barn quilt is a painted quilt pattern on an exteriorgrade signboard, which is attached to the side of a barn or farm outbuilding. The initial idea to bring barn quilts to the area began as part of the Ashe Arts Barn Quilt Project. The project recognizes quilts as symbols of comfort and family. West Jefferson earns Great Main Street award BY JAMES HOWELL

james.howell@mountaintimes.com

J

efferson Avenue, the heart of downtown West Jefferson, was officially recognized as a “Great Main Street” earlier in 2015 by the Great Places in North Carolina awards program, sponsored by the North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association. The award was made possible by the town’s streetscape project, which has transformed the town into a pedestrian friendly, tourist destination during the past few years. The streetscape project has resulted in the removal of several stoplights in town, replacing them with stop signs. Also, better sidewalks, bump outs, benches, streetlights and shrubbery have been added for the benefit of visitors and area residents alike. “The revitalization of downtown has played a huge role in the increased number of visitors and foot traffic that have been in town,” said West Jefferson Town Manager Brantley Price. “As you may know, West Jefferson has become the example for small towns to follow to revitalize their downtowns, as we have had many other towns visit to review our new look.” Winners of the Great Main Street award were selected by a panel, and three other North Carolina main streets were selected for recognition in the Professionals’ Category. “All of these Great Main Streets represent excellent examples of community-based planning at its best,” said John Morck, president of APA-NC. “Through this program, we celebrate great places in our state and the local partnerships that have worked collaboratively to make these places great.”

West Jefferson Town Manager Brantley Price leads a tour of 50 visitors from the city of Oxford through the town. Visitors from Oxford’s business community and elected officials were curious about how West Jefferson redesigned its streets during the past few years. PHOTO BY JAMES HOWELL

In addition to being featured on the GreatPlacesNC.org website and the N.C. Chapter of the American Planning Association website, winners are provided marketing materials to use in their business and economic development efforts, receive an award at a special presentation in their community and will be recognized at the upcoming APA-NC annual conference in October. The program’s goal is to celebrate “Great Places in North Carolina,” recognize the hard work and partnerships that created them and provide examples of successful places to the rest of the state. West Jefferson’s streetscape program has drawn attention from several visitors during

the last few years. On Nov. 20, 2014, three representatives from Chatham County visited West Jefferson to see the town’s streetscape efforts during the last few years in hopes of implementing similar designs in their own towns. As part of the visit, Price shared a presentation revealing details about the timeline and funding for West Jefferson’s streetscaping. Dianne Reid, president of Chatham County Economic Development, said the visit was productive for the Chatham County representatives. “My overall impression of the town was extremely positive. In fact, I’m hoping to

come back soon for a longer visit,” Reid said. “I particularly liked the arts components (the fire hydrants, the concrete blocks that used to support the old light fixtures, the murals) and the stub outs that enhance pedestrian safety.”

ABOUT APA The North Carolina Chapter of the American Planning Association is an organization of 1,500 professional and citizen planners dedicated to preserving and creating great communities throughout North Carolina. The annual conference for the APA — NC will be Oct. 21-23, in Raleigh. For more information, visit www.apa-nc.org.

Shopping: unique, fun and friendly

“The Honey Hole is unique, the Amish Store is unique, and then the Cabin store has got to be one of a kind,” Woodie said. “Not to mention West Jefferson features businesses like Antiques on Main, which is the largest antiques mall in the High Country.” All of these factors make shopping in West Jefferson a unique, fun and friendly experience. s West Jefferson grows, the town adds newer and more diverse shops, making shopping downtown a one-of-a-kind adventure. “As a merchant and part of the business association, I think that the town has the best shops it’s ever had,” said Keith Woodie, president of the West Jefferson Business Association. Vacant buildings are becoming a harder thing to find in West Jefferson, as new businesses are constantly moving in. But new businesses such as Martha Mae’s Emporium and Grandma’s Place haven’t just been moving in for a couple months, many are sticking around for the long haul. “We have art, we have antiques, we have the best restaurants I think West Jefferson’s ever seen,” Woodie said. “I think for the first time in a long time, we have really successful business people really succeeding around town. We have some really professional businesses.” According to Woodie, one of the reasons for the recent success of the many small businesses in West Jefferson is the unique nature of the shops.

Anyone walking down Jefferson Avenue should be quick to notice that the prepackaged “box shops” so many towns offer are virtually nonexistent in West Jefferson. Instead, town visitors are treated to unique specialty shops.

For example, the Honey Hole is a local business that sells locally made honey products and bee-keeping tools. On the other hand, Art of Oil sells gourmet oils and balsamic vinegar, along with other items.

ith all the beautiful scenery and laid-back attitude throughout West Jefferson, it’s easy to forget just how much there is to do in and around town. West Jefferson hosts two major festivals annually, has thriving gallery crawls, live music venues, two golf courses, a movie theater, a skating rink, a bowling alley and much more. Christmas in July, West Jefferson’s largest attraction, brings thousands from around the country every summer to marvel and celebrate the nation’s No. 1 provider in Christmas trees. The Olde Time Antiques Festival, held every September, provides a fun retrospective trip back to the “good ole days” while enjoying all that West Jefferson has to offer. For those interested in crisp, early morning air and long drives down the

fairway, Mountain Aire Golf Club and Jefferson Landing are the links to hit down. If golf isn’t your thing, check out Cardinal Lanes Bowling Alley for fun with the whole family. With 12 finely oiled lanes, large arcade and billiards room, Cardinal Lanes is just the spot for a great time. Over toward the south side of West Jefferson is Skate Zone, a local familyoperated nonprofit organization hoping to reach and make a positive impact for the children and youth of Ashe and surrounding counties. Not everyone is into sports or outdoor activities, so West Jefferson offers The Parkway Theater to movie enthusiasts of all ages. With two large screens and full concession stand, The Parkway Theater is a popular destination on weekends for everybody. For more information about entertainment options in West Jefferson, visit the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce at www.ashechamber.com or call (336) 846-9550.

he aroma of deep-fried goodies, the melodious sounds of good ol’ mountain music and the electricity through the air are all but gone, but the memories of the 29th annual Christmas in July continue to live on through those who were there. “There’s a little bit of something for everyone is here, from fine art with painting and photography and some sculpture to crafts of pottery and woodworking to jewelry making, it runs the gamut,” said Jane Lonon, vice president of the Christmas in July board of directors and who has seen every Christmas in July. The 2015 festival was held July 4 and 5. “We have a brew maker this year, several basket makers, people who are preserving their indigenous art forms. People come to do a little bit of shopping and to cruise on foot and meet and greet and see all of their friends on the streets of West Jefferson,” she said during the 2015 festival. “The farmers market, of

course, is open as part of the footprint of the festival. Our nonprofit row is bigger this year then it has been before. It’s such a good way for local organizations to fundraise, to showcase the good works they do in the community and to let visitors to our community, as well as folks who live here, know what’s going on. There’s lots of activities for children with a moonwalk and a giant slide and the obstacle course, which is always fun.” The festival, despite the overcast of clouds and drizzle, came off without a hitch, as West Jefferson Mayor Dale Baldwin welcomed the masses. “Ladies and gentlemen, on behalf of the board of West Jefferson and the town council and the town manager, I’d like to welcome each one of you here,” Baldwin said. “This is the 29th annual Christmas in July festival. I think the rains are going to stop and I hope you all have a good time and have fun.” Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, who has never missed Christmas in July, said she CHRISTMAS – Continued on Page 17

verybody has to eat, so why not take some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and pull up a table at one of several restaurants found throughout West Jefferson. The diversity of sit-down eateries is wide and tasty, with everything from traditional American hamburgers, sandwiches and french fries to international cuisine, including Asian, Cuban and Mexican fare, to local Carolina-style barbecue. Black Jack’s Pub & Grill, Boondocks Brewing Tap Room & Restaurant, the Candy Shack and Mercantile, Hillbilly Grill, The Hotel Tavern, Louise’s Sweet T Café, Smithey’s and Sweet and Savory Bakery and Deli all offer cafe-style meals and a friendly atmosphere. West Jefferson includes an international flavor for those looking to try something a little out of the usual. Shokudo Japanese Seafood and Osaka provide diners with an Asian flare offering both Japanese and Chinese food. Looking to spice things up a bit? West Jefferson also has a Mexican restaurant, Casa Garcia, which gives its patrons some of the finest Mexican food this side of the border. Continuing with the Latin feel, The Havana Café serves up traditional Cuban food with a down-home feel. What North Carolina town would be complete without traditional North Carolina barbecue? Smoky Mountain Barbecue and When Pigs Fly BBQ and Wings have chicken, beef and, of course, pork dishes will all the fixings. Whatever you taste, West Jefferson has a large variety of restaurants and cafes to please the most finicky of palates.

cre upon acre of Christmas trees dot the rural landscape surrounding West Jefferson, grown by smaller family farms, large farms, and everything in between. Aside from providing beautiful scenery, Christmas trees have become Ashe County’s No. 1 cash crop, enjoying widespread success locally due to the area’s unique climate. Ashe County is also home to several choose-and-cut farms that allow families from all over to pick out their own tree for the holidays and chop it down themselves. The holiday spirit evoked by Ashe County’s No. 1 cash crop has also been noticed by the White House. Since 1982, seven Christ-

mas trees from Ashe County have made their way to the Blue Room of the White House, the highest holiday honor a tree can receive. Many of the Christmas tree farmers in the area are members of the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association. The ACCTA is an association of family farmers in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains who specialize in growing the Fraser fir, also called the “Cadillac of Christmas trees.” The Fraser fir is highly prized all around the country during the holidays because of its aroma, shape, dark green color, excellent needle retention and strong branches capable of carrying heavy ornaments. Along with the Fraser fir, members also grow a wide variety of other Christmas tree species, and many growers also make and ship wreaths and garland.
