Spend time watching the animals and noticing how the different animals move. Cast members can use this information to help with their character’s physicality. You can also invite the shelter to set up a table and display at your performances. They might even be able to bring actual animals with them for your audience to see.

STAGING DEMANDS The production can be staged very simply with a few specific props.
CONSIDERATIONS Sleeping Beauty KIDS is a great show for a large group of students. Between the Fairies, the Goons, and the Forest Animals there are plenty of roles that should excite all different types of performers. The songs in the show are all based on Tchaikovsky’s classic score, which makes the score slightly more difficult than some other shows, but it is still completely accessible for a student audience. INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY Without the forest Briar Rose would have had nowhere to hide from Maleficent. Talk to a local forest ranger about arranging a visit to a local forest. Take a tour and learn about the different kinds of trees that grow well in your area. Then find an area in your community where you can plant new trees.

CONSIDERATIONS Since The Phantom Tollbooth JR. is set in a world of the imagination, let your creativity run wild in designing sets and costumes. Your students will have a lot of insight, too! There are many ensemble parts and featured roles, some of which can be double-cast if you have a limited number of students. This is a great piece to showcase your stronger singers. INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY When most people are bored, a magical tollbooth doesn’t whisk them away—they have to think up things to do on their own. One excellent way to combat boredom is to channel your energy towards helping someone else. Have your students learn about volunteer activities in their area by inviting organizers to speak at your school, and by seeing firsthand how those organizations help those who need it. Urge your students to volunteer at one of those organizations, or find ways to help their community on their own.

STAGING DEMANDS While not a lot of dance is required, the Major General’s daughters could highlight a few female dancers. If the pirates or policemen have any physical comedy or acrobatic skills, those could certainly come in handy. CONSIDERATIONS The Pirates Of Penzance JR. is a great show for a large ensemble with plenty of good singers. There are many great featured parts to showcase all talents and levels of ability – including some great roles for performers with comedic skills. INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY In the show, Frederick has been raised since childhood by Ruth, his nursemaid. Have your students go to a local preschool or day care center and perform a few of their numbers from the show. Let them stay awhile after the performance to interact with the younger children and gain a deeper understanding of the responsibilities of caring for children.

CAST INFORMATION 6 principals, plus ensemble WAYS TO EXPAND Originally conceived for a cast of six, the MTI JR. version is designed to allow you to expand your cast to six principals with a choir that can be as large as your stage can accommodate. MUSICAL DIFFICULTY There are solos for the six principals, plus featured solos to be assigned from The Choir. With most numbers involving the full ensemble, the songs are arranged for unison or simple two-part harmony. STAGING DEMANDS The loose, revue-like structure allows for a great deal of flexibility in staging and cast size from number to number as well as for the entire show. Set and costume design can be as simple or complex as your budget or imagination will allow!
CONSIDERATIONS One of the easiest MTI JR. shows to produce, Schoolhouse Rock Live! JR. can be performed simply or grandly, using whatever level of staging and design you are able to contribute. And because most of the songs are so familiar and easy to learn, rehearsals are bound to be a snap! MUSICAL DIFFICULTY There are large Solos for Horton, JoJo, Mayzie, Gertrude, Sour Kangaroo and Cat In The Hat. Most of the ensemble music in the show is simple to learn but some of the songs are quite wordy and will need good diction. STAGING DEMANDS Production can be staged very simply with a few levels and fun props. Look to your Director’s Guide for simple and creative ideas.
CONSIDERATIONS Seussical JR. is a great show for large groups of students who enjoy singing. It is also a good show for a cast of students who enjoy playing larger than life characters. You will need to have a number of strong singers who are also good dancers or movers to play the Wickersham Brothers and the Bird Girls. INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY Talk to your local library or bookstore to see if you can find a time to have some of your cast members read stories to young children. Choose one of the stories that features one of the characters found in Seussical JR. Beyond being a good way to give back to your community, this project will also improve your cast members’ storytelling skills.

CONSIDERATIONS Willy Wonka JR. has a number of great roles for both boys and girls and can easily be expanded to accommodate students in many grade levels, making this a true all-school show. Also, the Director’s Guide contains great suggestions on how to create Wonka’s chocolate factory easily and inexpensively. INVOLVE THE COMMUNITY The Bucket household consists of grandparents, parents, and children living together. Encourage your students to find a child their age who is in the same situation as the Buckets and talk to them about the pros and cons of intergenerational living.
