HULESY BRITT

Q & A With Hulesy Britt, Founder of the Marvin Gaye Tribute

Tell me about the Marvin Gaye Tribute. What inspired you to create such an event?

Is there a theme for this year's event? What is it? Why this theme? It’s our 10 Year Anniversary Show. People will be wearing Marvin Gaye apparel because we’re taking the show back to its original theme. We’re also giving a portion of the funds to Freedom Preparatory Academy. There will also be a Silent Auction on the main portrait illustrated by Maria Mack. Which artist out today possesses the same charisma and talent as Marvin Gaye, if any? Kanye West. Although controversial, he embodies Marvin Gaye’s complexities and spirit. He also possesses a natural genius and the ability to use his words in a powerful way and connect it to the music. He is an Define "good" music. amazing writer and he shares his experiences in his music. I West’s music is going to Good music nurtures. Bad think appreciate over the years. music makes you chase Believe it or not, West’s music things that you can’t have will be played more than Jay-Z.

or ever own (projection). Today, good music has to be found. Do your research and you’ll understand how and where to find it, then you can go out and find exactly what you’re in the mood to hear.

Who will be performing at this event?

Stefanie Bolton It’s a tribute show in the form of Devin Crutcher several elements of art, song, Carmen Hicks dance, portraits, and poetry. We Keia Johnson celebrate Marvin’s career Tim Terry accomplishments and his music Larry Springfield Plus A Live contributions that span over 30 Band Assembled By Marc years. It started with a group of Franklin of the Memphis Horns friends thinking of different things to bring to Memphis. We had a think tank and one of them was to highlight an artist and have a DJ play Marvin Gaye all night. However, What can guests look forward to when they attend this event? the thought evolved into something bigger, the opportunity to bring Marvin Gaye’s music back to life. One of the most entertaining events that Memphis has Why does Marvin Gaye need to be honored in this to offer. We will bring Marvin back to life and take our way? guests back to 1974. Marvin’s music is celebrated in weddings, get-togethers, even in the pulpit. I’m trying to keep good music alive. Why try to rebuild or remake and not use what we already have? Marvin’s music was and is the epitome of the soul—love and the fear of losing love. What audience are you looking to bring out to this event? Everyone. For years I have played Marvin for my daughters and they have developed an appreciation for it. Therefore, it’s for all ages. Marvin was so passionate about life and he expressed every emotion about it in his music. If we all have emotions, which we do, we can all relate to his music.

What was your favorite album by Marvin Gaye? Why? In terms of my favorite personal album I’d say, Hear My Dear. In terms of Marvin’s Best work, it’s What’s Going On. You mentioned guests being able to dress down at this year's event, what's that all about? The original show was like a get-together and Marvin’s music is usually played in that type of venue. So we want to capture that same effect. When you hear the intro of Let’s Get It On, we want you to get up and dance like you’d do at your family’s get-together.

FREEDOM PREPARATORY ACADEMY | WE SUPPORT YOU! ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY Freedom Preparatory Academy Charter School (Freedom Prep) was the first Building Excellent Schools’ Fellow founded school in Memphis. Our mission is to prepare all students in Grades 6-12 to excel in college and in life. Our vision is to see all of our students prepared to enter and excel in the college or university of their choice upon graduation. Freedom Prep serves families from the Westwood and Whitehaven neighborhood in Southwest Memphis. Our student population is 100% Minority (99% African American; 1% Latino) and 86% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The majority of our students enter the 6th and 7th grade at least 3 grade levels behind, with most reading and doing arithmetic at an average of a 3rd grade level based on the Stanford 10 scores (a nationally normed assessment). In our very first year, Freedom Prep students gained at least 2 years in literacy and math, with some students growing 5 or 6 years based on our Stanford 10 scores. In our 2nd year, Freedom Prep served approximately 200 students in Grades 6-7. In just two short years, Freedom Prep has become the highest performing non-optional middle school in the Southwest region of Memphis. On our most recent TCAP exam, Freedom Prep students outperformed the Memphis City School’s district averages in reading and math. In addition, Freedom Prep students outperformed the entire State of TN on the Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) in Math. Our students have effectively closed the achievement gap in Math, scoring equal to students in Williamson County, TN, one of the wealthiest counties in the State of TN and the country. Our students have proven that every child can succeed academically at high levels regardless of socio-economic background. Although our Reading and Math scores significantly increased (by double digits in both subjects), we still have a lot of room to grow on our literacy scores. During the 2011-2012 school year, we operated a full middle school with approximately 270 students in Grades 6-8. Despite the academic deficiencies our students enter with, we continue to make significant academic gains. Our biggest achievement was on the End of Course Algebra I exam, where 85% of the 8th graders that took the exam scored proficient or advanced. Our 8th graders not only outscored the local districts, but also outscored the state average and tied with one other county in the State for the highest average in the State of TN. On the Spring 2012 TCAP exam, our school-wide average in Math was 66% proficient and advanced in Math, exceeding both local and State averages. Our school-wide average in ELA was 46% proficient and advanced, exceeding both the Memphis City and Shelby County School districts. Even more striking about our results is the fact that the majority of elementary schools that feed into Freedom Prep rank in the bottom 5% of the State. Finally, Freedom Prep was honored to be the only charter school in the Memphis City School district to receive the Reward status distinction (based on academic scores or growth measures). Freedom Prep plans to expand its grade capacity to high school with a 9th grade class beginning the 2013 school year.

PERFORMERS TIM TERRY A native of Memphis, Tennessee, whose musical influences were Rhythm and Blues' disciples of Soul—Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Willie Hutch, Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Their spirits led a young Tim Terry into the river's bank to be baptized in funk and chosen to spread the gospel of soul revival. In an industry where talent is not appreciated, Tim Terry is determined to bring the honesty and purity of music back from the dead. "Music can be political and moving without celebrating hate." His music transcends musical boundaries and ethic regions and does not forget to honor love.

KEIA JOHNSON Growing up overseas in a military family, Keia Johnson listened to a wide range of artists from Alanis Morissette and Erykah Badu to Marvin Gaye and Mint Condition. While her sound can’t be pinned down to one influence or another, those artists inspired her to be more than mediocre – more than just a pretty voice. She has performed with some of the best talent Memphis has to offer, while also building relationships with notable national names like The Bar-Kays and pushing herself as an entertainer. In June of 2011, Keia released her first solo effort, T.I.M.E. and donates much of the proceeds from her project to children’s charities. Keep up with Keia at ContactKeia.com.

DEVIN CRUTCHER Since his return from the house on MTV’s Making The Band 4, Devin has been hard at work in the studio preparing an album that is sure to capture listeners with an appreciation for real sounds of soul and rhythm and blues. An album full of the right ingredients of sounds such as seductive lyrics, combined with a little soul, a pinch of neo vibes and a hint of blues, with the variations of sounds blending, the tracks are bound to be the perfect recipe to a soulful album you can’t resist. Devoting his entire life to his first love, music, Devin is an all around gift causing a triple threat: his charm, his alluring voice and his ability to captivate a crowd.

CARMEN HICKS

Carmen Hicks is a native of Memphis, TN and a graduate of Memphis Central H.S. After graduating, she began her musical journey including forming her own band. She has been singing professionally for the last 10 years. Originally, Carmen began with “THA Movement”, an open forum for local singers to showcase their talent. Since then she has performed throughout Memphis at local venues and for special events. Carmen has had the opportunity to travel with the team to perform the Marvin Gaye tribute in Nashville, Tn. This will be the 8th performance to which she has contributed her amazing vocal talents in honor of the late Marvin Gaye.
