I
making memories
It’s official – the summer season is upon us and I’m ready to have some fun with my family! I’m really looking forward to all the summer activities we will embark on. Trips to the beach and water park are on the list, but I’m especially excited for summer nights. Many towns will offer outdoor movie nights, and the tradition of the 49’er Drive-in is something my family looks forward to year after year. This year we are really looking forward to embarking on a road trip to the east coast where we will visit with family and friends. Nothing says summer vacation like a good-ole Griswold style road trip – it’s family bonding at its finest! Getting an escape from the day to day is so vital - this year has been really hectic! Plus, the kids get one less week of summer break so I really want to make it memorable. I want to soak up every second because by the time summer is over I will have a fifth grader, a third grader and my baby will be in pre-k. This is the last summer I’ll have before the madness begins of middle school and no longer having a preschooler. I’m already dreading next summer so I’ll have to have a pause button to make this summer the best one yet! All summer long, I will be snapping away pictures of my family to hold on to the memories of our summer break a little longer – I hope you all do the same! And if you do, share them with us! This summer we are asking our Mom to Mom, NWI friends to post pictures of their little ones having fun in the sun on our Facebook page. Be sure to put their first name, age, and town you live in. Then in our July and August issues, we will share some of those pictures in the magazine! And don’t forget to put Mom and Dad in those pics! I always have to make a mental note to get in a couple pictures with the kids – and sneak in a couple pictures of just me and the hubby!
ONLY AT
Have a wonderful summer vacation!!

For as long as Jamalyn Bogan can remember she has been drawn to careers in service. For nearly two decades, she worked as an emergency dispatcher. Feeling inspired by the men and women who rushed to the scene led her to become a part-time EMT on top of her full-time dispatching position and has been for the last nine years. Looking for additional opportunities to give back to her community and others, she also became a Valparaiso, Ind. volunteer firefighter. “I’m a many irons in the fire type of person,” Bogan, a mother of two, says. “My hobbies are working for emergency medical service and the fire department. It’s a choice. I have to make a lot of sacrifices, but not when it comes to my family or children.” As a volunteer firefighter, she can be called out for hours at a time. Most recently, she and her team oversaw a crash site for 12 hours. She teaches a handful of classes monthly including CPR. She says time management and little sleep are the norm, but she wouldn’t change a thing. “It’s an awesome feeling to work with your brothers and sisters as a team all wanting the same outcome,” Bogan says. Bogan adds she’s had a multitude of professional experiences that serve as reminders she’s exactly where she needs to be. She recalls a time when she was able to calm a terrified patient suffering a heart attack. She says she was able to give him a blow by blow account of what was happening while maintaining constant eye contact. “He ended up writing me a letter thanking me [after he recovered]. He was scared out of his mind. Petrified. I knew he would be okay; it was my job to remind him of that. I never expected that letter, but it was an incredible feeling,” she says. The National Fire Protection Association estimates of the nearly 1.2 million local
firefighters throughout the country, 70 percent were volunteer in 2015. Approximately 7 percent of all firefighters are women. Bogan says while being a female firefighter makes her an anomaly, locally she finds, there are more women than the national average. She explains gender and other variances have played no part in her firefighting career. “We all have the same job. No one sees me as ‘just a girl.’ There are no differences between us [fellow firefighters],” she says. Bogan says the volunteer firefighter comradery runs deep. She says she has had the pleasure of working alongside individuals from all walks of life including fellow parents, paramedics, engineers, mechanics, electricians, managers, cashiers and more. And while the comradery is abundant, volunteers are waning with many local fire departments struggling to keep full rosters. She encourages anyone interested in learning more about what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter to visit their local fire department to get a better feel for the task at hand as well as to fill out an application. “Our society and culture is changing. There are multitude of reasons keeping volunteer firefighting from growing. There’s a place for everyone to find their niche in a department. If you think you’ll like volunteer firefighting, you probably will,” she says. She says at the end of the day she wants nothing more than to be a role model for her children, “I hope my work helps them think outside of themselves. It’s important to recognize what we can do for others. They know the sacrifices we make as a family, but we have to make additional sacrifices to benefit the community as a whole.”
Career and volunteer firefighters alike must go through extensive training to prepare for the varied emergency situations they may face. In 2016, the McMillan Family Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the Indiana District 1 Firefighter Training Council created the Multi Agency Academic Cooperative (MAAC) Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to develop a state-of-the-art campus that will serve as a leading provider of safety, emergency preparedness and response training. The non-profit strives to meet the training requirements and objectives of departments locally, regionally and statewide, ensuring the national firefighting standards are met, quality of training and experience of fire instructors is sufficient and the core elements and foundation of an effective fire training system is established and maintained for future generation of firefighters.
The MAAC Foundation has been charged with developing training opportunities for firefighters, police officers and EMS personnel. The foundation intends on achieving their goals through the offerings of combined classroom and practical application programs that will provide advanced levels of critical thinking and functioning in preparedness and response, while supporting and meeting the needs of existing Indiana District 1 training sites. The foundation currently operated on a four-acre parcel in Valparaiso. To learn more about supporting your local emergency services in another way, visit maacfoundation. com or contact McMillan Family Foundation President Celina Weatherwax at Celina@mcmillanfamily. foundation.- mtm

NWI Food Truck Festival Cassidee Jacobsen Provided
F
For the last several years, the food truck industry has been booming in major cities. Why are food trucks so enticing? They offer delicious, often times gourmet, food quickly and at affordable prices. They create a unique experience and atmosphere that cannot be found in a booth at a restaurant. What could possibly be better than a food truck? An entire festival dedicated to them, of course! Many of us in Northwest Indiana have never experienced anything like the NWI Food Truck Festival coming to Founders Square Park in Portage, Indiana on Saturday June 17th from 11AM until 9PM. This festival will host twenty food trucks and endless amounts of fun for all ages. Food truck fare will include a variety of cuisine sure to appeal to everyone in the family. Organizers, Monica Jimenez-Susoreny and Bill Hazel came up with the concept for the festival by combining a concept that included our region’s love for our local food
trucks and a family friendly, out of the box, all day experience. The event was moved to Founder’s Square Park in Portage to accommodate the projected amount of attendees and to reap the many benefits of the city Of Portage. The new area offers additional space, a splash pad, existing staging, and is in close proximity to the local police and fire departments. General admission tickets are $7 the day of the event (children 13 and under are free). The NWI Food Truck Festival has teamed up with the Portage Food Pantry to help provide meals for those in need by holding a food drive at the festival. Attendees who have not pre-purchased a ticket with benefits can bring in three canned/dry goods per person and receive $2 off their general admission ticket the day of the event. The NWI Food Truck Festival will appeal to more than just your belly. The event will offer rock climbing, zip lining, a game truck, and a bouncy house fun area that will include bounce houses, slides, jousting, bungee run,
mom to mom nwi | june 2017 | page 14
obstacle course, and knocker balls provided by The Bounce House Company. Smaller ones can also enjoy face painting, visiting with their favorite characters, and balloon animals at no additional cost. Adults can look forward to live entertainment throughout the day. Live acts include Frank Paul, Chris and Lou, and DJ Chef from Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen. In addition to spinning tunes, DJ Chef will give live cooking demonstrations. Those of age can also take pleasure in the beer/wine/mimosa garden sponsored by Party In Peace. Drinks from the garden can be carried throughout the park. A souvenir cup will be available for purchase for $1 off all beer refills. Registered food trucks include Cool Runnings Jamaican Cuisine, Grindhouse Café, Bills Grill BBQ, Iscream N Cookies, Lulus Licks, CheSa’s Gluten Tootin Free, SizzleBox, The Cajun Connoisseur Food Truck, The Cheesy Truck, Dogs N Hogs, Mother Wilma’s Marshmallow
Factory, Celtic Pig – Kentucky, American Glory, Skyline Snow Cones, Valpo Velvet, Da Portable Rican, Designer Desserts, Woody’s Curly Fries, King of the Road, Flying Taco’s, Pierogi Wagon, Lucy’s, and much more! “We are very excited to be launching the NWI Food Truck Festival in Portage. The response has been very positive. We appreciate the support from the community and we are looking forward to providing attendees with a one-ofa-kind, memorable experience,” Jimenez-Susoreny said. For additional information or volunteer opportunities and benefits contact info@nwifoodtruckfest.com. all the fun?
Hair and Make-Up By: Kelly Raab Clothing By: Out of Peyton’s Closet Jewelry By: Chloe and Isabel Cupcakes By: Wild Flour
T
This month I turn 30. And while I’m not concerned by the number or the fact that this will be my third decade of life, it has brought on this onslaught of philosophical thoughts and emotions. One of which is the question, “Why do kids get to have all of the fun?” You might respond with that’s a simple one, Nichole. Between family life, work obligations, errands, household chores, kids’ ever-growing extracurricular activities and the like, I get it. It’s hard to make time for fun. We make lists of things we have to do much more often than we do of things we want to do. I’m guilty of filling my days to the max, bouncing from one meeting to the next, grabbing my previously meal prepped plastic containers along the way and ending my day feeling like I’ve barely had a moment to come up for air. Weekends get relegated with tasks to catch up on all that were put off throughout the week. This birthday and this year of my life has a lot on the forefront both professionally and personally. I have decided to make a concerted effort to be much more action oriented and stop just talking about all of things I want to do or accomplish. At the same time, too, I want to be kinder to myself and not feel guilty about what I may not have accomplished, but what I have. No small feat, but goals are meant to be lofty, right? I
want to think about experiences I want to have to enrich my life and make lasting memories. To embrace those moments for all they’re worth. Many children’s lives are relatively carefree and for those fortunate enough to have doting parents are brimming to the max with fun activities. Who wouldn’t want in on that? For those moms who find it difficult for “me time,” I implore you to find ways to make your family time fun for the WHOLE family. That means you, too, ya know? What’s something you’ve always want-
ed to do or experience with your brood, but just haven’t made it happen? It could be as simple as having a picnic in the park or on a local beach or as complex as a trip of a lifetime to a far-off destination. How can you start making strides towards those goals? Does it mean coordinating schedules to get a day on a calendar? Forgoing unnecessary expenses to set aside the needed funds? If you’re one who will pull themselves away for some individualized time, dig deep. What’s that one thing that’s nagging deep in your belly. That
mom to mom nwi | june 2017 | page 22
fun activity (or activities for that matter) that makes you smile just thinking about it. We could all come up with a whole host of excuses as to why we don’t take action in our lives and life just continues to pass on by. And for those perfectionists out there (guilty as charged), do yourself a favor. Breathe. If you’re sidetracked or sidelined along your pursuit of fun, it’s okay. Try again. And again and again. I may not spend every birthday with my makeup and hair professionally coifed, Barbie doll pink tutu on surrounded by balloons, while enjoying delectable
cupcakes made just for me (or maybe I will, ha), but I know this much. I will embrace every moment to laugh out loud, laugh at myself and enjoy the simple pleasures in life. I will find new experiences to plug into for both myself and my family. I will falter at times, but I won’t quit. I hope you won’t either. Life is sweet. Living life is sweeter. Living life and having fun along the way is sweetest. We want to hear from you. Share your “why do kids get to have all of the fun?” experiences with us on Facebook! - mtm

Salmon BLT Salad
This is a great summer salad. You can replace the salmon with chicken or steak. Your choice of meat could
also be grilled instead of oven cooked. Leftover rotisserie chicken could also be substituted on a busy night.
Salad • 1 lb Salmon fillets • Salt/Pepper • 1 ½ pounds Romaine lettuce, washed and chopped • 2 cups cherry tomatoes, halved • ½ red onion, thinly sliced • 1 avocado, halved, peeled and sliced • 6 slices bacon, cooked and chopped • 2 cups croutons, optional
Creamy Dressing • 1/3 cup mayonnaise • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt • Juice of 1 lemon or 2 limes • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tsp white wine vinegar • 1 tsp raw honey • Salt/Pepper to taste
Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place salmon on lined baking sheet and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Bake until brown and crispy on the edges about 18-20 minutes. Remove and let cool. Meanwhile, toss lettuce, to-
matoes, avocado, onion, croutons and bacon together. Whisk the ingredients together for the dressings. Salt and pepper to taste. Chop the salmon and toss into salad. Drizzle with dressing and serve immediately.
Dorito Salad Garnish Ingredients • Sour Cream • 1 pound ground beef • Lime Wedges • Salt/pepper • Scallions • 1 Tbsp chili powder • Black olives • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 1 cup salsa or pico de gallo • 1 tsp paprika • ¼ cup chopped cilantro • 1 tsp cumin • 1 bag Doritos • 1 Tbsp tomato paste • 2 heads romaine lettuce, chopped • 1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved • 1 can black beans, drained and rinsed • Shredded cheddar cheese, about 1 cup • 1 avocado diced Directions Heat a large cast iron skillet or other skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and garlic, breaking up the meat while it browns. Cook thoroughly and drain fat. Stir in chili powder, paprika and cumin. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Add tomato paste and about ¼ cup of water. Continue cooking until the liquid cooks off, a few minutes. Stir in the black beans, turn off heat and set aside. Salad assembly Toss chopped lettuce, cooked ground beef and bean mixture, tomatoes and avocado. Serve immediately with garnish. Serves 4-6 people as a main dish.

A Day for Dad: Make This Father’s Day One to Remember Kimberly Blaker
T
Fathers play a significant part in children’s lives. They influence children’s self-esteem and school performance, are important role models, and among other meaningful roles, make fun-loving playmates. Father’s Day is just around the corner; so don’t be caught scrambling for the perfect way to show you care. Try some of these ideas, and make it a special day just for Dad that both of you will enjoy. Video Surprise – Make a “World’s Best Dad” video that he’ll treasure for years to come. Put on your brainstorming cap for your own ideas, or try some of these. On videotape, share special memories of your dad, sing to him, read him a poem, or do skits. Get the whole family involved and conduct interviews with each other with Dad as the main topic. Don’t forget your props such as a banner or collection of his prized possessions including sports trophies or equipment that tell who he is. Finally, be sure to let him know just how much he means to you. King for the Day – It isn’t every day that dad is waited on hand and foot. Offer to be his loyal servant for the day, and bring him coffee and toast in bed; fetch his newspaper; lie out his clothes, bath towel, and mat; be host or hostess and serve his beverages and snacks; clean up after him and anything else to give him the royal treatment.
Memories of Dad Purchase a scrapbook, and create a record of memories about your father and you. Include photos of special outings, events, and holidays you’ve had together and other memorabilia from family vacations and activities such as concert or sporting event ticket stubs, postcards, and brochures. Next to each photo or item, describe your memories of those times together with your father. A Man to Remember Get your creative juices flowing, and write a poem for your dad. You need not be a poet to come up with a few thoughtful words to say how much he means. Describe the impact he’s had on your life, how he’s helped you to become the person you are today, and what he is to you. Then print it on stationary, matte and frame it. Musical Moment Take your father to see his favorite band or performing artist, enjoy a jazz or blues festival, or pack up some lawn chairs, and enjoy a local concert-in-the-park.
mom to mom nwi | june 2017 | page 30
Togetherness Takes Two Has your dad been putting off the dreaded task of cleaning out his attic, basement, or garage? Give him a gift of shelving materials and brackets, wall racks and ceiling hooks, and storage crates. Then spend the day helping him to get it organized while catching up on old times. World’s Greatest Let dad know that he’s the greatest 365 days a year! Give him a “World’s Greatest Dad” coffee mug, t-shirt, book cover, book marker, wallet card, or other trinket that he’ll see or use regularly. Sports Buff’s Surprise – Take your dad for a sporting good time. Play a game of golf, tennis, or basketball, go fishing at the river’s edge, or enjoy a paddle around a lake. If being a spectator is his thing, purchase tickets to his favorite sporting event such as a baseball or soccer game, boxing match, or auto race. Weekend Getaway Get in touch with nature and each other on a camping trip for two. Either rough it in a tent or rent a mini cabin at a state park, and spend your weekend enjoying nature hikes, sightseeing, fishing, boating, playing cards, and taking it easy together. Father’s Day Feast As the old adage goes; the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. So, treat dad to a mouth-watering meal on the bar-be-que. Fix him his favorite: steak, ribs, chicken, burgers, or chops for starters, and don’t forget the grilled potatoes or squash, garlic bread or rolls, fresh green beans or asparagus, sweet corn, potato salad, and last but not least, his favorite dessert. Treat Him Like a King What better way to show your appreciation for all his hard work than to indulge him? Give your father a gift certificate for a professional massage, which will be sure to please. Just the Two of Us Put together a photo collage of you and your father. There are many ways to do this. Find instructions at
your nearby craft store and create a Decoupage photo collage, keep it simple with a multi-photo frame, or purchase a unique 3D Photo Collage frame which can be found through a number of stores online. Take a Stroll Enjoy a peaceful walk together in the park or the country. Better yet, gather your bikes or roller blades, hit a scenic bike path, and enjoy the summer breeze. Certificates of Appreciation Show Dad you appreciate his hard work by returning the favor. Make coupons that say: “In appreciation for all that you do, Dad, please redeem this certificate for a hassle-free car wash by me!” Other favors include sweeping out the garage, mowing the lawn, or any other task for which he normally takes responsibility. Catch a Flick…..or two Treat your dad to a movie fest. Rent a couple newly released videos or some of his long time favorites, or head to the cinemas for a double feature. Whether you take the movies in at home or the theatre, don’t forget the hot, buttered popcorn, candy, and soft drinks. Get in Touch with His Soft Side Give your dad a book of poetry specially written for fathers. Try one of these: Fathers: A Collection of Poems by David Ray and Judy Ray To My Father With Love: A New Collection of Poems by Susan Polis Schultz Thoughts to Share With a Wonderful Father: A Collection of Poems by Blue Mountain Arts Collections A Gift of Giving Does your dad have a favorite cause or charity such as the Humane Society, the Nature Conservancy, or American Cancer Society? If so, why not give him a membership or make a donation in his name? Remember that small donations add up and are always appreciated. - mtm
