I hone my craft daily and it is one method by which I see and understand the world. Art has always been a part of my life and it has come to define me as a person.
about me My name is Duy Tran and art has always defined my life. It has driven me to various corners of the world and has guided me on my path towards architectural design. I am a artist at heart, who is inspired by the world around me. Art is my foundation. There is nothing that does not interest me and I in turn use what life teaches me in my work. My interests push me to constantly pursue new knowledge and skills. Through a regimen of both digital and physical craft I am able to translate my design vision onto the canvas. This book is a selection of my work from my undergraduate career at the University of Missouri, to my Graduate education at the University of Oregon. Continual learning is how my abilities achieve growth. Architecture is an immensely powerful craft, shaping the settings in which life unfolds. I am drawn to design because it provides me with an avenue to improve the lives of people who inhabit these spaces and an opportunity to help humanity coexist with the natural ecosystem. Architecture is an endeavor that I find to be truly rewarding. There are always new inspirations to be discovered along the journey.

concept & development
the confluence of two rivers The form of this hotel and conference center is influenced by both the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, the curvature of the site, and the many rock quarries located in Columbia, Missouri. The site itself is covered in lush greenery. Through this concept, we created an interior where visitors can experience a feeling of comfort and pride in the University of Missouri and the city of Columbia. The design emphasizes the relationship between the university and the city and creates a landmark that represents the two. It is a means of wayfinding for those in nearby proximity, and will be memorable through its striking features. Students in MU’s schools of Hospitality, Physical Therapy, Business, and Culinary Arts will utilize this building as a living lab. Students will have an enhanced learning experience because of the opportunities these facilities provide.

The Fab Collab iteration of the Columbia Transit System bus stop redesign is based on versatility, modularity, and sustainability. With aesthetics catching the eye of riders and art aficionados alike, the design solution will put a new face on the city’s public transportation system. A living art gallery displaying Columbia’s local artists will be featured at every stop.
panels
energy The consideration of a more efficient approach to saving electricity was acknowledged by the introduction of solar panels into our design solution. Photovoltaics will be located on a dual axis rotating panel located above the exterior bike storage area. Each set of solar panels will be site-specifically installed to maximize solar gain for each bus stop location. This system will be the source of power for the interior LED tube lighting for night use.

green initiatives The planned overhaul of the current Columbia Transit System bus shelters is backed by green design initiatives and sustainable technologies. The modularity of the bus shelter design is a cost effective approach to sustainable design. All 3form exteriorsteel panels are based on a 4’x8’ template perforated transparent and are all fastened to one another and the metal underlying structure by glass friction clamps. All panels are interchangeable allowing for a customizable shelter layout. Various works of art can be displayed on each section and if damaged, the repair process is as simple as unfastening and replacing them.
water
Sustainability is capitalized on our green roof system. Two thirds of the rooftop will be composed of green roof blocks to collect a large amount of rainwater and any runoff from the these portions of the roof, including the backward sloping canopy at top, will be collected by a gutter system and then displaced among the surrounding site.
air quality
Circulation will be controlled by the open entry space up front and cross ventilation will be governed by perforated kick plates at the base of all transparent panels and through the open canopy at the rooftop.

museum + civic center 27
Surrounding the site are three piazzas that are utilized throughout the week as markets and civic event spaces. The current site is home to an office building that does not activate the south west corner of the city center. The new museum and civic center aims to expand the market space of Piazza dei Signori with operable doors that allow the market to merge with the building at different times of the week. Retail spaces and the museum entrance near the south west corner will activate that under utilized space.

the institute of moving image film school, multiform theatre about The Institute of moving image is a higher education film school located at the current USPS location in Portland, Oregon. The urban vision, titled “Portland’s New Front Yard is both a vision of what the future of transportation holds as well as a cultural and economic driver for the city. This comprehensive studio 43
project represents a culmination of all that I have learned at the University of Oregon and the University of Missouri.

connecting the city 45
We currently live in a world that runs predominately on fossil fuels. Buildings account for nearly 40% or energy usage in the United States and transportation accounts for 28%. In comparison, Germany obtains 80% of their energy from renewable sources. We as designers have a major impact on the environment and there is much left to do in the United States. Portland is blessed with many transportation options such as regional bus, MAX light rail, Portland Street Car, walkable blocks, and bike friendly infrastructure. The current plans for a continuous “Green Loop” that connects the city with a pedestrian and bike friendly pathways represents the next evolution of Portland’s urban environment in terms of how citizens get around and are connected to their communities.
The existing USPS site has the potential to become a vital node in the future green loop plan and provides amazing possibilities. This 50-year urban vision presents a future where technologies such as autonomous vehicles and the hyperloop streamlines transportation. Union Station will be transformed into a transit hub that serves an underground Hyperloop Hub, Bus Rapid Transit station, and MAX Light Rail Station. This will transform the new site into a front yard where Portland can present its culture, arts, and knowledge. Portland’s front yard, will contain green spaces, museums, sculpture gardens, water features, a market and more retail. This will be a grand arrival destination for visitors from around the region, country and world who can visit through a multitude of transportation options.

education for all Education is a communal endeavor, therefore there must be space that allows for the institution and public to mingle and interact. The Institute of Moving Image is a building for the community.
51
The ground floors and basement of the building provide mix public and institute programming to achieve this vision. Inspired by motion, the building evokes motion. The form erodes towards the nature and park blocks and fortifies towards the urban grid. The stage is an adaptable, multiform theatre that can change form to suit the needs of the users. A flat stage that can be used for film production, an auditorium for lectures and a theatre for events. The playhouse is the birthplace of acting and I wanted to integrate that with the film school, to mix the programs
the future of education
so that program in the site can interact with one another. For the learning spaces, I have considered the various needs of education. Plenty of space for individual learning as well as group learning, dispersed throughout. The grand staircase that connects these levels together is what I call the learning cascade. Where lectures can be held and different students and faculty can interact. For more focused learning, there are meeting rooms and smaller study nooks. Outdoor terraces for when fresh air is needed and inward spaces for focusing. The goal here is to have interaction at all levels, between the teachers and the students, and the institute and the public, a school that learns from the city as well as give back by teaching the community.

Through my travels, I have learned much about architecture, nature and the people around me. The following are moments and memories I have captured on camera and in my sketchbooks.
+photography
art&
A photograph can capture moments in a clear manner that memory cannot. It is a fraction of time that is forever preserved. I use photography as a way to tell stories about the places I see. I am an observer to the wonders on this planet and my photos are an oculus into my perspective.
The world is full of details and carefully articulating them with the pencil is one method by which I understand their intricacies.
