community spotlight

A Look at HIAWASSEE & YOUNG HARRIS

It’s often said that once you’ve discovered paradise that you never want to leave. That can certainly be said for the residents living around beautiful Lake Chatuge Hiawassee is a Cherokee word meaning that is located between the neighboring towns “meadow” and the Chattohochee National of Hiawassee, GA and Hayesville, NC. Forest covers over 57,000 acres in the county. Once upon a time, the Creek and Cherokee Indian Nations lived in these beautiful mountains and valleys with abundant wildlife that roamed free until the Trail of Tears forced their relocation in 1830. As early English settlers moved northward from the colony of Savannah, many decedents of Scots-Irish moved southward from Virginia’s Shenandoah into the North Carolina Mountains. These early settlers faced many hardships from bitter cold winters and had a very difficult life. Although the rugged mountains were isolated, these settlers had great determination and steadfast faith to homestead farms in this great land.

Hayesville, North Carolina is seated in Clay County and was formed in1861 from nearby Macon & Cherokee Counties. It was named in honor of Kentucky statesman Henry Clay. The town of Hayesville was the former site of the Cherokee town of Quanassee, which lay along the Trading Path to Murphy, N.C. also known as the “Unicoi Turnpike”

The town of Hayesville was incorporated in 1913 and named after Mr. George Hayes who represented them in the North Carolina General Assembly to form Clay County. Much of the county is preserved from the Nantahala, Tusquitti, & Fires Creek National Hiawassee, Georgia is seated in Towns County Wildlife National Forest Land that covers over and was formed in 1856 from parts of nearby 110,000 acres. The Town of Hayesville features Rabun & Union Counties. It was named historical attractions including the downtown for George Washington Towns, who was the Hayesville Courthouse, The Old Jail built in governor of Georgia from 1847 to 1851. 1912, and the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit. 6 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains

With the outbreak of World War II, this brought an emergency demand for electricity, mainly to power aluminum production in East Tennessee, and the Tennessee Valley Authority offered to meet this demand by building a series of dams. The Chatuge Dam project was authorized in 1941, originally called the Hayesville project and required over 11,000 acres to be purchased to form the reservoir. Chatuge Dam was named for an 18th-century Cherokee village once situated near the dam site. Unfortunately, hundreds of families, gravesites, and over 40 miles of roads had to be relocated in order to complete the project. It was the area’s richest and best farmland from which the residents had gleaned their livelihoods. The TVA dams brought badly needed jobs for local folks in the lingering post-depression years, but gone forever was 3,700 acres in Clay County, NC and 3,500 acres in Towns County, Georgia. Lake Chatuge is a 7,500-acre man-made reservoir that was created in 1942, by TVA which cost of over nine million dollars after construction was completed on Chatuge Dam, and blocked the Hiawassee River in Tennessee in order to institute a system of flood control. It is one of 29 TVA hydroelectric dams throughout the Tennessee River system used to provide hydroelectric power. When water from Chatuge Dam was released and diverted, it filled up naturally variegated terrain and created Lake Chatuge’s numerous peninsulas and private coves with magnificent locations for swimming, boating and other water sports. The unsurpassed beauty of the lake created by Chatuge Dam inspired people to name it the “Enchanted Valley.” On the north side of the Enchanted Valley are mammoth mountain ranges in the Nantahala National Forest and on the south and east sides are the peaks of the Chattahoochee Spring / Summer 2019 | www.mountainlakeguide.com

National Forest. Lake Chatuge is situated in the center of the Enchanted Valley with 132 miles of lake shoreline. The entire region surrounding Lake Chatuge is famous for year round trout fishing in numerous streams and rivers. Although Bass, Catfish, Bluegill, Bream, Carp, and Crappie are plentiful, Lake Chatuge with fishing depths of over 25 feet has produced several state record fish, including the hybrid striped bass and smallmouth bass. Many fishing boats can be seen during the season as well as people fishing offshore enjoying the afternoon. Another great way to have fun exploring Lake Chatuge is to enjoy a leisurely cruise on a pontoon boat or rent a jet ski, canoe, kayak, or paddle boats. Many accommodations can guide visitors to spend time at one of the many golf courses, horseback riding stables, white water rafting adventures and surrounding hiking, biking trails & waterfalls in our surrounding National Forest Land. Both Clay & Towns counties offer public parks, picnic areas and beaches for outdoor enjoyment. The region surrounding Lake Chatuge is an antique shopper’s dream including many intriguing stores that display the work of many well-known painters, potters and sculptors along with a colorful array of Appalachian folk art. Restaurants feature everything from fine cuisine to country cooking, deli treats, and bakery sweets. Many surrounding wineries also offer tasting and tours for an afternoon of activities. Let the beautiful Lake Chatuge scenic area of Hiawassee & Hayesville inspire you to return again and again for that perfect mountain vacation. road trip to

Tallulah Falls From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC

Rated as one of America’s 20 Best State Parks by Adventure Journal and one of Georgia’s seven wonders, Tallulah Gorge draws admirers as one of the most breathtaking sites. The Niagara Falls of the Southeast is a 1,000-foot gash in Tallulah Dome that drops the Tallulah River over six waterfalls in one mile. Mountain biking and hiking are popular here, as well as some serious multipitch rock climbing. But the real deal here is boating, rafting and kayaking the Tallulah when the upstream Georgia Power Company opens its dam, a few times a year. Said to be one of the oldest geological features in North America, Tallulah Gorge has been forming for thousands of years. Prehistoric Indians discovered the canyon and hunted both along its rim and in its deep bottom. When the first European settlers arrived in the region during the 1820s, the word of the magnificence of the canyon and falls spread. The Tallulah Hotel opened in 1840 and with the completion of the railroad in 1882, connecting Atlanta to Tallulah Falls, people flooded to see the remarkable natural scenes and it became a major tourist attraction. At the peak, there were seventeen hotels and boarding houses in and around the town that rented riding horses, offered billiards, tennis, and music for dancing in the major hotels. In 1883, tightrope walker Professor Leon crossed the gorge as part of a publicity stunt for one hotel. Then in July 18, 1970, Karl Wallenda became the second man to walk across the gorge on a tightrope; a feat that may soon be recreated by his great grandson in an upcoming event. Just as the tourism boom reached its height, however, Georgia Power wanted to dam the Tallulah River to produce electricity and opposition of the natural setting was led by Helen Dortch Longstreet, the widow of Confederate general James Longstreet, in which the park’s trail system is named after. In 1992 Governor Zell Miller joined with officials of Georgia Power Company to announce a remarkable joint partnership to create Tallulah Gorge State Park. Visitors can now enjoy the spectacular 1,739 acres of wilderness with recreational opportunities and guides from Georgia’s State Parks.

Highlights of Tallulah Falls include: The Jane Hurt Yarn Interpretive Center that highlights the rich history of this Victorian resort town, as well as the rugged terrain and fragile ecosystem of the area. Additionally, an award-winning film takes viewers on a dramatic journey through the gorge. Tallulah Falls School Founded in 1909 by the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, providing comprehensive college preparatory education. Arts & Crafts Galleries which feature local fine Southern art, folk art, original paintings and prints, pottery, photography, woodcraft, jewelry and hand blown glass. Shop for unique Native American Crafts, chainsaw art, gems, and many inspirational scenic paintings from the area. Stay for the weekend in Cabin Lodging, or one of the many camping sites in the area. Enjoy this peaceful getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, where you can hear the crickets chirp at night. Just bring your lawn chair and listen to Music on Bluegrass Square; located at the outdoor Tallulah Falls Opry House on Main Street. Bonfire, marshmallow roasting, and grilled hot dogs provided! Recreation abounds with picnic areas, campgrounds, overlooks, 6 Hiking trails, stairs leading down into the gorge and even a suspension bridge that crosses the canyon 80 feet above its bottom. There is shore and boat fishing on all 3 lakes: Tallulah, Tugalo, & Yonah. Spend the afternoon picnicking at Terrora Beach, or play on the tennis courts. There is a public beach for swimming on Tallulah Lake & public playground located at the day use area of Tallulah Gorge State Park. Tallulah Gorge State Park is open daily from 8 a.m. until dark. There is a $5 parking fee. The entrance is on U.S. 441 in Tallulah Falls, GA. Access to the canyon bottom is by permit only. Permits are free and can be obtained at the interpretive center, but note that ONLY 100 permits are issued per day. The park is extremely popular and the quota of permits is often filled first thing in the morning. VACATION GUIDE in the Mountains | 25

HELEN and the

Chattahoochee River runs through it

Many people know the Chattahoochee River as one of the most important U.S. Army Corps of Engineers impoundments in the nation. This river’s basin is the smallest in the nation and serves as 485 a source of drinking water for metro Atlanta, and continues along the Georgia – Alabama border, and into Florida. This important source not only provides drinking water supply to more than half of all Georgian residents, but also provides hydroelectric power, commercial navigation, flood control, and recreation in three states to over 25 million Americans. It begins as a spring; “Chattahoochee Gap,” just a little more than a trickle of water where Jack’s Knob Trail dead-ends into the Appalachian Trail at about 3,600 ft. and lies 200 ft. south. Several streams flow from Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, Towns, Union and White counties to broaden its shoulders. Origin of the name “Chattahoochee” is believed to be derived from ‘Chatto,’ a stone, and ‘hoche,’ marked or flowered; there being rocks of that description in the river above Hoithletigua - an old town that historians place near the present town of Franklin, Ga. in Heard County. The river, “Chota,” was named by the Cherokee Indians at the headwaters and when the river flowed into Creek territory, it became the “Chattahoochee.” and was used by the tribes as a border between their Nations, then between 486 themselves and early settlers. Excavations suggest that Spanish searched for gold in the valley as early as the sixteenth century. The first American gold rush began in 1828 through streambeds of the Chattahoochee headwaters, and the first dam was built to power a grist and lumber mill in 1876. The present Nora Mill still operates a water-powered mill and grinds cornmeal, grits, wheat, rye, and flours. The Chattahoochee River and Wildlife Management Area are located within the 750,000-acre Chattahoochee National Forest with lush forests. More than 500 species of birds, mammals, fish, and reptiles live in this protected headwaters portion, as it provides wildlife access to drinking water, sites for nests and dens, 520 and berry-producing shrubs along its banks as a source of food. Helen is a perfect start, as this river runs through this Alpine Village town of themed German- festivals and businesses. Then the Chattahoochee picks up flow from creeks such as Smith, Low Gap, Henson, Dukes, and Sautee. Two beautiful waterfalls that merge into these creeks are the twin falls of Anna Ruby and Horse Trough Falls, just north of Helen. From Helen, the river flows east through Sautee Nacoochee Valley, which pass agriculturalresidential areas throughout White and Habersham Counties. The river then flows into Buck Shoals State Park, a wildlife preserve not yet opened to the public and Mossy Creek State Park just north of Clermont. The river flows through the newly planned State Park (Don Carter) on the northern tip of Lake Lanier. Summer is the perfect time to enjoy recreation such as fishing, tubing, canoeing, boating, hiking and camping on the Chattahoochee River banks, shores, and it’s watershed to make 521 your vacation a “COOL EXPERIENCE”!

McCaysville

I AM A

There has been quite the buzz of late regarding the revitalization happening in the twin cities of McCaysville, GA and Copperhill, TN. Word is there is an investor that has been helping to spur along the progress where the state lines meet. So, we decided to go check it out. And Wow! What a turnaround! Things are definitely changing for the better in these two little towns, but our favorite stop of the trip was this obscure little shop, right on the corner as you come into McCaysville called Weird Oh! Weird Oh! is not a product of the fancy investor. Weird Oh! is the brainchild of a very special lady with a gigantic heart. Once upon a time, proprietor Erin Hawley, earned a living as a comedian on the coast of North Carolina. Her favorite destination to vacation was in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. As her life progressed and her three children grew in age, she decided it was time for a change and she relocated to her vacation spot.

MCCAYSVILLE, GA Since there were no comedy clubs in Blue Ridge, she thought maybe that would be a great business venture. However, space in downtown Blue Ridge is hard to come by. One day Erin and her eight-year-old

son were walking around the McCaysville area and she thought “what do children do here for fun?” So, for the next few days, they walked the area, mother and son, back and forth, thinking and talking. Then one day on their regular walk, a for sale signed appeared in the window of the ugliest building you have ever seen. It was red and orange and just an eye sore. As a creative artist, Erin saw a diamond in the rough and contacted the owner. For weeks she single handedly, with only the help of her youngest child, worked tirelessly to give a major facelift to this corner building. There may have been some gawking of townsfolk as Erin worked. You see, Ms. Hawley does not look like your typical business owner. Tall and gorgeous? Yes! Conservative and formal? No! Erin loves her makeup, her fashion, and it is very unlikely to catch her in any shoe other than high heels. And since she is an artist, you should expect that her body has been used as a canvas so don’t be surprised by her colorful expressions.

THE DEETS So, what exactly is Weird Oh!? Well, it’s a magical emporium of fun! Better known as an unusual place for unusual people, inside you will find peculiar treasures and trinkets. It’s a place where kids can be kids and adults can be kids too! Everything can be touched, moved, and you can even write on the walls and not get in trouble! The only rule that you will encounter is that laughter is a must! No matter what. Laugh, have fun, pick up a toy, purchase a gag gift that will make someone laugh. Giggle a little, chuckle a lot, let out a guffaw if something strikes your funny bone. You won’t be judged, because Weird Oh is all about fun! Like we told you in the beginning, Erin has a very big heart. Her whole purpose in opening Weird Oh! was to have a place for kids to come in and be kids. She gives gifts to almost every little one that opens the “Alice in Wonderland” door. Additionally, she supports Shop with a Cop, little league teams, and every opportunity for a child to get a toy that makes them happy. Being called a weirdo her whole life, Erin embraces her uniqueness and uses it in a way to positively impact the youth of the area. Stop in next time you ride the Blue Ridge train or when you just find yourself exploring the twin cities of Georgia and Tennessee. Bonus tip: If you yell out “Dang, You’re Beautiful!” you get 10% off your whole order! by Tobie Chandler, escapetoblueridge.com
