Community Spotlight

Find peace in the still mountain waters of

Blairsville, Georgia

H

ave you dreamed of sitting beside the still blue waters in a Mountain Paradise? Look no further than Union County and the beautiful surrounding mountains of Blairsville, Georgia. Known for its year round recreational areas The Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County covers more than 98,000 acres. A vast and endless watershed from the Tennessee Valley flows down the Nottley River and creates lakes, creeks, streams, and branches. As the river continues to flow south it creates many branches known as the Coopers Creek Wildlife Management Area. These clear waters run along miles of hiking trails for everyone to enjoy. Just off Hwy. 129 / 19 North is Lake Nottley, one of Georgia’s best kept secrets that has 70 percent of the shoreline located in US Forest Service lands. This beautiful 4,180 acre lake has a dam reservoir that features a beach, camping area, hiking and is a popular place for viewing wildlife. Lake Nottely is also known for its diverse population of fish. The most common types are largemouth bass, spotted bass and crappie. There are also black and striped bass, walleye and rainbow trout. The state stocks the water to give anglers more opportunities.

6 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains

Many water sports outlets provide fishing supplies, seasonal boating & jet ski rentals to help you enjoy this beautiful scenic mountain paradise. The centerpiece of Blairsville sits off the four lane with a round-about circling the Old Courthouse which was built in 1899 and listed on the National Register of Historical Places with a Museum that is open to the public. Visitors enjoy hearing the nightly bell music from the tower and Friday Night Concerts of local bands and Gospel singings May – October. History in downtown Blairsville also continues at the Mountain Life Museum, which replicates life in the early days. The Mock House circa 1906 and Payne Cabin, Barn and Corn-crib is restored for visitors to see early life of settlers. Other historical sites include The Reece Farm & Heritage Center, homestead of the famous poet Byron Herbert Reece as you continue down Hwy. 129/19 South. Just to the south of those historical sites sits 233-acres of recreation at Vogel State Park. See the clear blue waters of Trahlyta Lake as you follow walking trails around it and view Trahlyta Waterfalls. The park offers Hiking trails, campsites, cabins, www.mountainlakeguide.com | Spring 2022

picnic facilities, and activities like geocaching. The 22 acre lake is great for fishing or non-motorized boating activities. Many visitors also enjoy the rushing cascades of Helton Creek Falls which has a vertical drop more than 100 feet. The trail accesses the lower falls at both the bottom and top of the falls and ends at the bottom of the upper falls. The rocks are deceptively slippery around these falls, so please exercise caution. The trail to the falls are located off Hwy. 129/19 South on Helton Creek Road. Further down the Nottley River Corridor of Hwy. 129/19 is Desota Falls Trail , a 650-acre recreation area. There are five beautiful waterfalls along the 3-mile section where hikers can access three of the falls, designated as the lower, middle, and upper DeSoto Falls. The lower falls cascade 20 feet, while the middle and the most scenic falls drop 80 feet. Water at the upper falls surges down a granite rock incline for almost 200 feet and may be viewed from the flat, granite formation which overlooks the falls. To get away from it all, Lake Winfield Scott is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and offers a 18 acre lake that is quiet for camping or hiking and

Spring 2022 | www.mountainlakeguide.com

has a swimming and pavilion area. From Highway 129/19 take Hwy. 180 and follow the signs. The remote community of Suches is picturesque and features the historic stone structure of Woody Gap School on Hwy. 60 and is home to the small, yet beautiful Woody Lake. The popular autumn season ‘Indian Summer Festival’ is held in Suches annually with arts and entertainment. Many people come to Blairsville because of their year round events. Visitors love the festivals throughout the year that include Spring Arts & Music Festival, Blairsville Scottish Festival, The Butternut Creek Festival and the Annual Sorghum Festival for great food and entertainment. The recreational opportunities and beautiful scenery invite people to lodge in cabins, retreats, and campgrounds located throughout Blairsville for family vacations, weddings, and weekend getaways. VACATION GUIDE in the Mountains | 15

Clarkesville Road Trip To

Clarkesville & Scenic Hwy. 197 From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC

Drive to the quaint city of Clarkesville and discover one of the most historic towns in northeast Georgia. Back in the early 1800’s, travelers got to the city by stagecoach and then tourists came by railroad . The neighboring Tallulah Falls which was known for its spectacular waterfalls increased the area’s popularity as a summer destination. At one time, the historic city was lined with hotels, which has now been replaced with quaint shops, galleries and restaurants for visitors. Travel just down the road to Scenic Hwy.197 and you will soon be on the off beaten path that winds by the Soque River. The area has become “ A Must Destination” for viewing numerous galleries, fishing, lodging, and leading the way to Lake Burton and Moccasin Creek State Park.

CLARKESVILLE Mauldin House - at the corner of E. Waters & Jefferson Street. This large Victorian cottage and adjacent millinery shop date from the late nineteenth century. It serves as Clarkesville’s Welcome Center and the beginning of a walking tour of the Greek, Gothic, Victorian, & Plantation style homes in this beautiful historical district. Grace Calvary Episcopal Church - built in 1842. The building features over 42 hand-blown glass windows, straight-backed box pews, and a pipe organ which is the oldest working church instrument in Georgia. The Gloaming Cottage - was built in 1840 by Jarvis Van Buren, the first cousin of President Martin Van Buren, as his personal residence. Included in the projects that he built in 1848 is the First Presbyterian Church on N. Washington Street.

SCENIC HWY 197 Sam Pitts Park - beside the beautiful Soque River for walking trails, picnic, and playground. Soque River – This winding drive follows the unique tributary of the Chattahoochee River and is over 28 miles long. Use caution as you travel, as at one point on Scenic 197 there will be a dip in the road (clearly marked by a road sign) where the river can flow over the road, this is humorously known as a “Low Bridge”. Many trout fisherman love this watershed, as the Soque River‘s cold temperatures are the secret to the large Rainbow, Brook, & Brown trout that inhabit it. Batesville – has a General Store and local arts and craft galleries like Hickory Flat Pottery. The beautiful Souque River flows beside the historic Mark of the Potter that was once a historic grist mill built in the 1930’s and is a must stop for photos. Lake Burton – This 2,775-acre reservoir and is one of the first lakes created to generate hydroelectric energy by Georgia Power. Lake Burton’s name was derived from the former town of Burton, which now lies below the lake’s surface. The town (and the lake) was named after local prominent citizen Jeremiah Burton. Many species of fish, call this home, including bass, crappie, bluegill, sunfish, catfish, walleye, trout, and perch. Moccasin Creek State Park & Lake Burton Fish Hatchery – Camp at one of Rabun Counties most popular State Parks on the shores of Lake Burton. The park is relatively flat, offering easy navigation for large RVs, bicycles and wheelchairs and offers a fishing pier that sits above a trout-filled creek. Lake Burton Fish Hatchery offers tours and raises trout to stock for cold-water streams of North Georgia. Hemlock Falls Trail – A two-mile trail begins just south to the entrance of Moccasin Creek State Park. The trail is relatively easy and follows a stream where many small waterfalls are created by branches. The trail leads to a wooden bridge that crosses the river where you continue a few feet to see Hemlock Falls. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Spring 2022

The Fort Mountain Mystery

Just outside Ellijay, traveling on State Road 52 to the Northwest, is a winding two lane road that ascends more than a thousand feet with sharp turns and pull-offs on both sides. Fort Mountain State Park’s entrance then takes you to the park office where you can get information about trails, camping, R.V. sites, and many activities, including hiking, backpacking, biking, picnicking, horse back riding, fishing, swimming, or geocoaching hidden treasures. Fort Mountain takes its name from a peak that has remnants of a stone formation around part of that peak. These mysterious piles of nonnative rock, many of them large, form a long discontinuous zig-zag wall that runs more than 928 feet and varies in height from two to six feet. The original construction and function of the formation as a fort is less accepted today and its origin remains unknown. Some scholars believe that the formation could be attributed to pre-Columbian native Americans from around 500 A.D. and that

36 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains

it held a ceremonial or religious purpose. The ancient wall runs east to west and the alignment illuminates one side of the wall at sunrise and the other side at sunset as ancient Native American cultures often worshiped the sun. The myths of the culture who built it abound. Cherokee Indian culture speaks of a race of “moon-eyed” people who are said to have lived in Appalachia until the Cherokee expelled them. Another myth revolves around the Welsh prince Madoc, who purportedly sailed to America in 1170. The story asserts that Madoc’s colonists had intermarried with local Native Americans. These “Welsh Indians” were credited with the construction of a number of landmarks throughout the United States. For more information call 706-695-262 www.mountainlakeguide.com | Spring 2022

This bridge was built in 1895 by Will Pardue. It is 36.8 feet long with queen-post truss. It has a parking area, picnic area and historic marker. It is at Chickamauga Creek. It was also known as Sautee-Nacoochee, Helen Bridge and Chickamauga. Located in an area of White County, rich in history and legends of the Cherokee, Stovall Mill Bridge spans Chickamauga Creek. This is not to be confused with the more famous northwest Georgia Creek of the same name. An earlier covered bridge stood here but was washed away in the early 1890’s. The bridge retains the name of the miller, Fred Stovall, Sr.; who operated the mill complex for many years.
