Dahlonega
A Rich Experience
Dahlonega, Georgia is a charming town rich with history, art and adventure. Originally Dahlonega was known for the Cherokee word meaning “yellow money” and was the site of the first major U.S. Gold rush in 1828, which was 21 years before California’s rush and is home today to the artifactrich Dahlonega Gold Museum. The Historic 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse is the home to the Dahlonega Gold Museum where visitors can see rare gold coins, artifacts, and history of the area. There is more to this town than it’s “golden history”, as Dahlonega has the greatest concentration of wineries in all of Georgia. Its fertile, mineralrich soil produces amazingly versatile lines of European, French hybrids, and American wine grapes used in the making of many award-winning wines. Dahlonega’s restaurants range from cozy bistros to friendly cafés to metropolitan-chic delights. The downtown square also offers plenty of shopping including one of a kind boutiques, art galleries, historic tours & attractions, concerts in the park, and local wine tasting rooms.
4 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains
Festivals are an integral part of Dahlonega’s heritage and are perfect ways to take in the beauty of the outdoors. During the holiday’s, an Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration is held in December with lighting of luminaries, festivities, carolers, and Santa on the Square. Surrounding the area are a host of outdoor activities including Amicola State Park which is located just outside of Dahlonega on GA Hwy 52. The park was named “Amicalola” which means ‘tumbling waters’ by the Cherokee Indians for its spectacular waterfall, that is the highest waterfall in the Eastern U.S. at an awe-inspiring 729 feet. Dahlonega is home to the beginning of the Appalachian Trail, a 2,100 plus mile hiking trail that extends up the eastern United States from Georgia to Maine. The famous trail starts on Springer Mountain which is located just a few miles from the in Amicalola State Park & Lodge. The resort offers a variety of activities including hiking, camping, picnic, trout fishing, geocaching, conference center, lodging, and restaurant facility. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Holiday 2023
Weather you like to fish, kayak, or hike, there are many places for outdoor adventures. Horseback riding is also a popular activity with many visitors with several locations to ride within the Chattahoochee National Forest area. Golfing just outside the Dahlonega area provides a relaxing day with spectacular views of the mountains and the Chestatee River. Voted Georgia's Best Small Town in 2022 by Southern Living, visitors are welcomed to lodge in a variety of accommodations including Cabins, Resorts, Historic B & B's, hotels or camping in the surrounding area. Just pack your bags, schedule some time and let Dahlonega's home town hospitality take care of the rest! Plan your visit today today and discover why “It's Pure Gold”. Stop in or call the Dahlonega Visitor’s Bureau at 13 Park Street. Call 1-800-231-5543 or go to www.dahlonega.org for more information. Holiday 2023 | www.mountainlakeguide.com

road trip to
Helen From Atlanta, GA From Chattanooga, TN From Asheville, NC From Greenville, SC
Come visit the beautiful Alpine town of Helen in the heart of the Northeast Georgia Mountains. Experience walking through a fairytale of dreams from the villages of Germany with Bavarian style food, and fun for everyone. Many businesses go beyond the German brews, bratwurst, schnitzel and goulash to greet you in lederhosen and dirndl dress to welcome you with hospitality. Lighting of the Village kicking the festivities off is in late November. The charming, colorful pitched roofs drip with twinkling Christmas lights, and when lucky enough to get a rare touch of snow, the town looks like a Bavarian winter wonderland. Throughout the first two weekends of December, a traditional German market, Christkindlmarkt, has booths where visitors can shop for gifts, decorations, and sweet treats. Explore all Helen has to offer including some of these highlighted attractions in town or visit www.HelenChamber.com FESTHALLE Year Round Festivals held to celebrate seasonal events. Longest Oktoberfest in the South with authentic German music, dancing, costumes, food, & Beergarten! Trout Tournament in March, Springbierfest in April, Bavarianfest in May and Bingo March - September. CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER Headwaters of this historic 430 mile river that brings water to Georgia, Alabama, & Florida. Tubing, kayaking, and fishing is popular for visitors that come to Helen. Tallulah Falls R
ated as one of America’s 20 Best State Parks by Adventure Journal and one of Georgia’s seven wonders, Tallulah Gorge draws admirers as one of the most breathtaking sites. The Niagara Falls of the Southeast is a 1,000-foot gash in Tallulah Dome that drops the Tallulah River over six waterfalls in one mile. Mountain biking and hiking are popular here, as well as some serious multipitch rock climbing. But the real deal here is boating, rafting and kayaking the Tallulah when the upstream Georgia Power Company opens its dam, a few times a year. Said to be one of the oldest geological features in North America, Tallulah Gorge has been forming for thousands of years. Prehistoric Indians discovered the canyon and hunted both along its rim and in its deep bottom. When the first European settlers arrived in the region during the 1820s, the word of the magnificence of the canyon and falls spread. The Tallulah Hotel opened in 1840 and with the completion of the railroad in 1882, connecting Atlanta to Tallulah Falls, people flooded to see the remarkable natural scenes and it became a major tourist attraction. 26 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains
At the peak, there were seventeen hotels and boarding houses in and around the town that rented riding horses, offered billiards, tennis, and music for dancing in the major hotels. In 1883, tightrope walker Professor Leon crossed the gorge as part of a publicity stunt for one hotel. Then in July 18, 1970, Karl Wallenda became the second man to walk across the gorge on a tightrope; a feat that may soon be recreated by his great grandson in an upcoming event. Just as the tourism boom reached its height, however, Georgia Power wanted to dam the Tallulah River to produce electricity and opposition of the natural setting was led by Helen Dortch Longstreet, the widow of Confederate general James Longstreet, in which the park’s trail system is named after. In 1992 Governor Zell Miller joined with officials of Georgia Power Company to announce a remarkable joint partnership to create Tallulah Gorge State Park. Visitors can now enjoy the spectacular 1,739 acres of wilderness with recreational opportunities and guides from Georgia’s State Parks. www.mountainlakeguide.com | Holiday 2023

Biking
in the North Georgia Mountains
Mountain cycling in North Georgia offers the best views overlooking lakes, lush forests, streams, and rivers, in pristine State Parks/Wildlife Management areas. Starting from rolling hills to steep mountain grades many trail rides offer a variety of degrees from the novice to experienced to go through the backcountry of these beautiful mountains. It is highly recommended that all levels of skill be prepared for your trail ride. Complete information about the trail, which includes distance, terrain, weather conditions, plus good equipment and supplies for your excursion, will help to make the trip enjoyable. Organizations such as IMBA, SORBA, SABA, NGCA, and NGBDA can tell you specifics about trails, races, and other group ride events. Visit a local bicycle shop, listed in our area directory for further information. Websites we like include www.trails.com and www.dirtworld.com Listed are just a few of the numerous biking trails over a broad range of North Georgia’s eight counties to explore. Happy Trails…

WELCOME TO THE
Top of Georgia!
Brasstown Bald
B
rasstown Bald is 4,784 feet above sea level and is the highest point in North Georgia. Those who have visited have marveled at the unsurpassed views!
Now you can view Brasstown Bald's Scenic vista in a whole new light - or dark? Coming in September & October, Astronomer, Alex Langoussis will guide you through the night atop Brasstown Bald's 360 degree veiew observation deck, where visitors will engage with wonders of the universe through galactic stories, expertise, and the use of a professional telescope. You could spend the evening being a "Gaurdian of the Galaxy" in learning about the magic of deep space and northern Georgia's incredible nightscape!
52 | vACATION GUIDE in the Mountains
Pre-registration is required for Friday night star gazing and there is a cost of $20.00 for 13 & up or $10.00 for ages 6-12. Events are subject to weather conditions, no pets, and people are encouraged to bring a flashlight and extra layer of clothers due to the cooler tempatures at night from higher elevation During the day there are several trails that lead up to Brasstown Bald, including Wagon Train Trail, Jack’s Knob Trail, where there is an access path to the Appalachian Trail. Arkaquah Trail follows high ridges to the Track Rock Archaeological area and Brasstown Bald Trail climbs 500 ft. in a half mile. Visitors can travel to Brasstown by car from State Rd. Hwy. 180 that can be accessed either coming from Helen or Hiawassee on 17/75 or by Blairsville on Hwy. 129. Once to the parking facility there is a steep, paved trail to the Visitor Information Center at the summit. Although difficult, this is an excellent hike for most people. Frequent stopping places along the path make it achievable for even the most out-of-shape hikers. A shuttle in the visitor parking provides access to the summit in addition to a picnic area for the public. The Visitors Center provides an unencumbered 360 view of the surrounding mountains and four states of North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and South Carolina. A museum and exhibit entitled “Man and the Mountain" shows rural mountain life, forestry in North Georgia and the diversifed wildlife in the area.
