How to use less data and save money on your wireless plan

oes your lifestyle require an unlimited stream of data? At first glance, there’s probably nothing wrong with this assumption: After all, think about how much of your day is spent on data-dependent activities like streaming video and music, or searching the internet. But all of this can be done while using far less, and sometimes even none, of the data from your cellular plan. Try these simple tips to save money on your wireless plan. 1) Tame the video beast Watching video on your smartphone is convenient, but it’s a data glutton. A full-length Netflix movie consumes about 1GB of data per hour in standard definition video, and up to 3GB per hour in high definition. Try connecting to Wi-Fi instead. It’s widely available, and lets you stream without using any cellular data at all, often with a faster connection. While connected to Wi-Fi, you can also download videos, TV shows or movies to your phone or SD card to watch at your convenience, with no data required. In addition, when you’re streaming video on a small screen, such as a cellphone, you really don’t need high resolution. Many apps give you the ability to change video quality settings, and therefore consume less data. 2) Manage social media and streaming music Videos have also become a standard part of the social media experience. Adjusting your settings to prevent videos from playing automatically will prevent them from eating up your data. The steps to change this setting can vary between applications. On most platforms, like Facebook, you’ll go to your Account Settings and either disable the “Autoplay” feature or change it so that videos will only play automatically when you’re connected to Wi-Fi.

Live Well

Popular audio streaming apps offer ways to listen to your music without having to use a network connection, or even Wi-Fi. Spotify lets you download your albums and playlists right to your device. If you use Apple Music, you can add songs, albums and playlists to your library. 3) Try a smaller plan for bigger savings While an “unlimited” plan may seem like an easy answer to your data needs, they can be more enticing than practical. Read the fine print: Most actually limit your high-speed data to a certain number of gigabytes per month. Once you use up that allotment, you’ll still have unlimited access, but at much slower speeds. This makes it more difficult to load pages quickly, or to stream video, even though you’re paying a premium for “unlimited” access. Instead, a carrier like Consumer Cellular offers a range of choices from a talk-only 250-minute plan to 3GB, 10GB, 15GB or unlimited data options each month. Plans are also flexible: You can switch up to the last day of a billing cycle with no extra fees, and you’re also automatically upgraded if you go over your data usage. Follow these tips and you’ll enjoy streaming movies, listening to music and more while also keeping money in your pocket for things other than a data plan. You can have it all, without needing an unlimited budget to do it. (BPT)

TMJ Therapy Anyone with recurrent or chronic TMJ syndrome is usually referred for physical therapy. Our therapist can help restore joint mobility, increase muscle strength, and relieve pain. These mobilizations are used to help the disk move in a normal way, decrease pain, and increase motion. Specific exercises are then prescribed to control and restore motion at the jaw and help re-educate the muscles surrounding the joint. Muscle stiffness in the neck and shoulders are now quite common with those who work at a computer all day. This causes headaches common with TMJ, but aslo can unkowningly force the jaw muscles to contrct both during the day and at night. Constant muscle contraction will eventually force the jawbone and joints out of proper alignment, which is what causes the clicking or locked jaw commonly associated with TMJ. The therapist will evaluate the jaw and mouth to determine the amount of mobility and tension in teh surrounding muscles. This evaluation includes a detailed assessment of the jaw, mouth, and neck, which will servce as the foundation for an exercise program to address muscle imbalances. Strengthening, stretching, and relaxation techniques will help reduce pain and restore function. Untrested TMJ dysfunction can result in your impared concentration, inability to chew food which leads to poor nutrition, difficulty sleeping, and psychological distress. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of TMJ dysfunction, contact your physical therapist. TMJ imbalance can be treated successfully and your physical therapist can be your biggest ally in the recover process.

A CHARM

quil t s

charm quilt is different than a regular scrap quilt because no two fabrics are the same. They are generally constructed of a “one patch” design, usually a square, triangle or hexagon. Sometimes the quilter just uses a random design, sewing the rows together as she/he gathered the fabric. Other quilts have very elaborate designs such as trip around the world pattern using the light and dark values of the scraps. A true charm quilt gets its name because a person will cut two patches from the same cloth, keep one and swap the other with a friend. If a quilt has a particular color scheme, say all shades of blue, then it is known as a “Beg and Borrow” quilt. During the 19th century it was common for ladies to write to their friends and include a sample from the dress they were making. Then they could share the letter and fabric with their friends. Charm quilts were traditionally done using just cotton but they were also made with silks, velvets, satins and brocades. These often included elaborate embroidery stitches to showcase needlework skills. You can make a charm quilt with a random number of fabrics or with one that holds a special meaning, like the year of a birth or wedding.

There are also other themes, like fabric from different states, just cat fabric or events, like the Bicentennial. You have probably seen quilts done with hexagons out of “conversation prints”, those with pictures of animals, trains, toys, flowers, etc. These are called “Eye Spy” quilts and are used for children, sick beds or for long trips. They are great for classrooms and offices. The maker can include a list with some of the things on the fabric. The fun begins when the person tries to find the fabric listed. A common swap quilters use today is by putting two fabric squares together with wrong sides out and lightly marking a line diagonally one square. Sew 1/4 inch on both sides of the marked line. Cut on the marked line. You now have two half square triangles. Keep one and swap the other. One patch is complete with two different fabrics. You can use one very light fabric and write your name on it with permanent ink. Make several of these and use them for a guild swap. You will then have a “Friendship Quilt”. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy and have fun with your quilting.

dementia, age-related mental decline, and even Alzheimer’s disease. One reason omega-3 fatty acids may be so beneficial to many aspects of health could be that they help decrease system-wide inflammation. Inflammation is at the root of most diseases and is related to the development of nearly every major illness. Multiple studies have found links between high omega-3 intake and a decreased risk for autoimmune diseases or an improvement in autoimmune disease symptoms. Osteoporosis is a major factor for older adults, affecting hundreds of millions of people worldwide and resulting in osteoporotic fractures once every three seconds. Omega3s are recognized in scientific research as able to increase the amount of calcium you absorb from your gut and improve the strength of your bones and synthesis of bone collagen. A good source of omega-3 fatty acids is fatty fish, including varieties such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and tuna. Other omega-3 foods include walnuts, chia seeds, flax and hemp seeds. Ideally, try to consume at least two servings of fish per week. Supplementation is also an option, which can be especially useful for those who don’t regularly consume fish. Although dosage recommendations can vary, the recommended daily intake is 1,100 milligrams of omega-3s per day for women and 1,600 milligrams daily for men. Taking up to 2,000 milligrams of omega-3 is generally considered safe by the FDA. As always, if you decide to start using a supplement to boost your omega-3 intake, make sure you do so under the supervision of your physician/naturopath. By: Tracy Pato, CNHP, CTN A to Zinc
