Skin Cancer PREVENTION Summer 2021 is finally here and many of us have never anticipated a season more in our lives. Coronavirus numbers are finally down and many have protected themselves with the COVID vaccine which makes it safer to get back to vacations, social gatherings, cook outs and the lake! Since we are venturing back into the glorious sun, we could all use a reminder about preventing sunburns from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. I commonly hear about “getting that first sunburn of the summer” but just 5 sunburns double your risk for skin cancer. Prolonged direct UV ray exposure is by far the most significant risk factor for developing skin cancer. And because we all experience some degree of sun throughout our lives, skin cancer is the most common cancer with an occurrence of 1 in 5 people. Its important to know that all skin types can develop skin cancer, including melanoma, but are much more common in lighter skin. The good news is that most skin cancers are treatable and can removed before causing a serious problem. There are 3 main types of skin cancer: squamous cell, basal cell, and melanoma. Of them, basal cell is the most common and easiest to cure. Melanoma is the rarest but by far the most deadly. Of the roughly 12,000 people dying each year from skin cancer, melanoma accounts for almost 70%.

“The best way to decrease your risk for skin cancer is to protect yourself from UV rays.”

The best way to decrease your risk for skin cancer is to protect yourself from UV rays. We’ve all heard about using sunscreen but selecting the best type is important. The most common type of sunscreen is “chemical” based and currently being investigated for safety concerning some of the ingredients, including oxybenzone and octinoxate. The other form of sunscreen is “mineral” based with zinc and titanium and are considered safe but commonly cast a faint white appearance. I currently recommend using a high quality, chemically reduced or mineral sunscreen. Apply 10-15 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours if you stay directly in the sun. Perhaps more protective is simply spending shorter amounts of time in direct sunlight by taking shade breaks at least every 20 minutes and to minimize direct sunlight from the highest UV hours of 10am to 4pm. Another important protective measure is wearing clothing and large brimmed hats. Make sure to take extra care of the kids, since early sunburns in life increase risk for melanoma. And it is never recommended to use a tanning bed. In terms of detecting skin cancer, it’s important to be familiar with your most sun exposed areas such as hands, face, and ears. Talk with your primary care physician if you notice an abnormal spot, especially if this appears to be changing size or color. Most primary care providers can diagnose and treat many early skin cancers. Finally, there is not a strong recommendation to have an annual skin check for most people, but light skinned people with history of melanoma should see a dermatologist every year. Here’s to having fun and staying well this summer! Primary care physicians with MedLink can help diagnose & treat early skin cancers. Call today to schedule your screening. A Natural Solution for SUMMER HYDRATION Fun in the summer sun can mean anything from poolside play and outdoor exercise to simply relaxing in the shade. While these activities make the season special for people of all ages, the heat also leads to the inevitable: sweat. Electrolytes, critical for the human body to function, are lost via sweat throughout the day. Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water, helps keep you hydrated. However, adding 100% orange juice to your diet can help replace those lost electrolytes in addition to aiding hydration. According to a study published in the “Journal of Nutrition and Health Sciences,” drinking 100% orange juice following exercise contributes to hydration equally as well as water and sports drinks, making the beverage a viable alternative for recovery. “Electrolytes include nutrients such as potassium, sodium, magnesium and calcium,” said Dr. Rosa Walsh, scientific research director at the Florida Department of Citrus. “In fluids, these nutrients carry an electric charge, which allows muscles to contract and nerves to transmit signals, and are critical for the human body to function. Plain water contains few if any electrolytes, so you must replace lost electrolytes by consuming foods or beverages that contain these nutrients. Drinking fluids that contain both water and electrolytes, such as 100% orange juice, may help support hydration.” In fact, 100% orange juice contains about 90% water and can contribute to overall water intake. With no added sugar, it’s an ideal way to support hydration by drinking it on its own or by adding it to recipes like this Healthy Broccoli Salad with Miso Orange Dressing or Pineapple Orange Smoothie. Visit floridajuice.com to find more recipes that aid in summer hydration.

STAYING FIT IN RETIREMENT

I

can reduce health care costs

t’s no secret that staying physically active supports overall well-being, especially for older adults. From reducing risks of certain conditions like heart disease and diabetes to minimizing injury and helping maintain independence, exercise is essential to supporting health and wellness as you age. Another noteworthy but often unrecognized benefit of regular exercise is that it improves overall health, which can result in lower healthcare costs. Improved health, lower health care costs and reduced hospital stays are some of the benefits enjoyed by active seniors, according to a recent nationwide study by Avalere Health and Tivity Health, a national provider of senior fitness, nutrition and healthy lifestyle solutions, including SilverSneakers, a community fitness program designed for older adults. The study compared new SilverSneakers participants and closely matched non-participating Medicare Advantage beneficiaries. So how much are healthcare costs reduced by participating in this program? The study’s findings showed the total cost of medical care for participants to be 16% lower than for

non-participants and total annual average health expenses among participants to be $4,463 compared to $5,303 for nonparticipants. That can make a big difference, especially for people with fixed incomes. Part of this reduction in costs includes fewer visits to the hospital, which can be expensive. After starting the program, participants experienced a significant 42% fewer hospital stays and 18% fewer ER visits compared to Medicare Advantage non-participants. Length of stay for hospitalizations was also significantly shorter for participants: 4.4 days compared to 5.8 days for non-participants. “This research shows that seniors who are regularly engaged in more healthy behaviors enjoy improved health outcomes and lower health care costs compared to those who do not incorporate exercise in their daily routine,” said Julie Logue, fitness expert and senior trainer at Tivity Health. “More than just exercise, the impact of senior fitness is also emotional and social, providing older adults an opportunity to make meaningful connections with others.”

Logue believes every senior can support their well-being and save on health care costs by being physically active. She recommends the following tips to keep in mind when starting an exercise routine:

Senior Living in the North Georgia Mountains

Talk with your doctor: Before you try a new fitness routine or take a class, speak with your doctor to make sure it’s a good fit for your health needs. You can typically reach out through your clinic’s nurse triage line or through a telehealth appointment so you can get insight without an in-person visit to the doctor’s office. Listen to your body: Whatever activity you decide to do to stay physically active, start slow and increase length or intensity as you build endurance. Any movement is better than no movement, so be proud of your efforts. Listen to your body and when you need to rest or take a break, do what feels right. Research senior programs: Fitness programs focused on the needs of older adults help position you for success while also connecting you in community or virtually with likeminded people. SilverSneakers is a national fitness membership program that offers fitness classes designed for seniors at over 15,000 locations nationwide including a FLEX network outside of a traditional fitness center such as parks, medical centers and community centers. Check virtual options: Not everyone is comfortable with indoor fitness, so consider online alternatives. Members have access to more than 13,000 instructor-led live classes each month as well as over 200 classes in our On-Demand library. Check eligibility: Some health plans offer options for lowcost or no-cost fitness programs. For example, SilverSneakers is available at no cost for adults 65 and older through select Medicare plans. Visit silversneakers.com to verify eligibility.

Active and Energized Registered dietitian shares how eating right in the morning fuels energy throughout the day

W

ith health and wellness top of mind for many Americans, fitness has become a top priority. Whether you’re extremely active or just starting on a wellness journey, incorporating wholesome, nutritious foods into your diet plan can help give your body the fuel it needs to thrive. “Studies suggest that eating a healthy breakfast before a workout improves your performance both inside the gym and out,” says Marissa Meshulam, registered dietitian nutritionist and founder of MPM Nutrition. “By filling up on vitamins and nutrients first thing in the morning, you set yourself up for success throughout the day.” Meshulam shares tips for creating a filling and fueling breakfast that supports an active lifestyle, helps you maximize your workout potential and extends your energy throughout the day: Start with hydration Your body craves hydration after sleeping all night, so start your day by drinking a tall glass of water. Consider making it a habit to drink water while you wait for your morning cup of coffee to brew. While coffee and other beverages such as fruit juice can help you hydrate, it’s important to be mindful of their sugar content, as that can cause blood glucose levels to spike, causing a short-lived feeling of energy before a mid-morning crash. Choose nutrient-dense foods Give your body a wellness boost by making breakfasts that include ingredients loaded with essential vitamins and minerals. Many berries, for example, are full of vitamins and antioxidants and pair well with a breakfast dish. As a base, choose nutrient-packed eggs to act as the star of the plate. Keep in mind, not all eggs are created equal. Eggland’s Best eggs are the only eggs that provide superior taste, freshness and nutrition compared to ordinary eggs, such as more than double the Vitamin B12 and Omega-3s, 10 times more Vitamin E and six times more Vitamin D. These vitamins perfectly compliment an active lifestyle, as they can help boost energy and aid in muscle recovery after a strenuous workout. Add in healthy carbs Healthy carbs are also important to keep in mind for a fueling breakfast, especially if the day calls for a more intense workout. Carbs

help you sustain energy for longer so the body and mind can focus and excel. Some healthy carbs to try adding to your breakfast include whole grain cereal or bread, bananas and sweet potatoes. Grains like quinoa, oats and buckwheat are also good options. Overnight oats, protein pancakes and egg bakes are all popular breakfast options that fuel an active lifestyle by helping you stay satisfied throughout the day. Looking for recipe inspiration? Try this nutrient-filled breakfast that will fuel your body and help you maximize your day:

Farmer’s Hash

Ingredients: 2 Eggland’s Best Eggs, large 1 parsnip, cubed (1 cup) 2 cups of brussels sprouts, halved 1 sweet potato, diced 2 tablespoons of olive oil Fresh thyme, chopped (2 tbsp.) Salt/pepper to taste Cooking spray Directions: • Preheat oven to 400 F. • On a large baking sheet, toss the vegetables (parsnips, brussels sprouts and sweet potato) with 2 tbsp. of olive oil and the fresh thyme. Add a little bit of salt and pepper. Mix well. Place in the oven for ~30-35 minutes or until crispy. Toss the veggies halfway through the cooking process. • While the veggies finish cooking, make sunny-side-up eggs in a skillet using cooking spray. • Once the veggies are done, scoop into two bowls and top each bowl with 1 egg each. Top with fresh scallions and enjoy! Recipe notes: You can cook the eggs however you prefer (poached, scrambled, over easy). (BPT)

The benefits of exercising outside...

W

hen the pandemic started, you may have had the best intentions of using your time to get fit. However, with a variety of challenges filling your time, don’t feel bad if you have yet to start over a year later. The good news is it’s never too late and now is the ideal time to find a fitness routine that works for you. Getting outdoors means ample space for social distancing and fresh air, which are important for health and safety reasons, but the benefits of outdoor fitness don’t stop there. According to research published in the Environmental Science and Technology journal, outdoor exercise has physical and mental benefits. In the report, when compared with exercising indoors, exercising outside in natural environments resulted in: * Greater feelings of revitalization * Increased energy * Positive engagement * Higher enjoyment and satisfaction * Decrease in tension, confusion, anger and depression * Higher likelihood to repeat the activity at a later date These results aren’t surprising to CEO and Founder of Moms on the Run Karissa Johnson, a structured fitness program for women of all ages. She said there are basic evidence-based health benefits of nature contact, including reduced stress, lower blood pressure, improved mental health and higher life satisfaction, among others. “Add in the benefits of exercise, and being physically active outdoors offers so many positives,” said Johnson. “Finding an exercise activity to do outside can really make a big difference in how you feel, whether that’s doing something you enjoy or trying something new.” Whether you have experience or not, Johnson suggests exploring running with a local group to help you get outdoors and be fit. Moms on the Run is one option that helps you learn to run with a group of other like-minded women. These groups are led by

HighroadsLiving.com

instructors so you know exactly what to do no matter where you are on your fitness journey. Groups meet at parks in cities nationwide and you can join at any time, with new signature training sessions often starting up in spring and fall. Learn more at www.momsontherun.com. Why choose group outdoor fitness? There are many reasons to buddy up rather than trying it alone. Feel supported: If you have questions or concerns, an instructorled group environment means you’ll always have answers. You’ll get the support you need to succeed and feel your best. For example, 90% of Moms on the Run participants in a recent survey said they feel supported and 83% feel they’ve connected with like-minded people, which all contribute to success. Accountability: Knowing a group is meeting and you’re part of that group can be more motivation than if you exercise alone. You’ll feel more drive to do something if others are expecting you to be there. If the program you choose comes with a cost, you also feel accountable because you want to make the most of that investment. Socializing: Being part of a fitness community allows you to develop relationships, and some people form lasting friendships. Even if it’s just connecting during class, in-person socializing is an important part of the human experience and something many people have missed since the start of the pandemic. Safety: Working out in a group helps you stay safer. First, you’re never alone in an outdoor area so you can feel more confident in your safety. Second, if you sustain an injury or experience another urgent situation, people you know and trust are around to help you out. Are you ready to get outside and reap the benefits of outdoor exercise? The fresh air and open spaces are ready to inspire your personal fitness journey. (BPT)

Getting in shape prior to surgery can make recovery easier. 50% of outcome success is due to the surgeon and the other 50% is due to the patient’s commitment to recovery, starting with pre-hab. Rehabilitation is an exercise and therapy program performed for up to three months after surgery. Pre-hab is an exercise therapy program started at least six weeks before surgery.

The Active Therapeutic Movement - ATM 2 Provides us the ability to perform integrated passive and active therapy for musculoskeletal disorders. This approach aims to normalize movement impairments that are related to patients complaints. Body areas are mobilized until pain is eliminated. These techniques are performed in the functional weight bearing position and are continuously monitored to ensure that they are pain-free throughout the intervention. Outcomes to Expect: For Athletes Lasting, consistent, immediate, and predictable increase in range of motion with no end range, risk prone movements. Possible immediate increase in strength, not due to muscle strengthening which takes significant time and effort to achieve, but rather due to an optimization in muscle activation patterns that occur. Outcomes to Expect: For Posture Patients Immediate, consistent, and predictable improvement in posture on the automatic level. No need to “teach” good posture because it happens automatically due to its simple, yet advanced, capability to alter CNS muscle activation

The rewards of pre-hab show in 24 hours after surgery. For example: after knee-replacement surgery, patients are expected to be walking using crutches or a walker to the bathroom or in the hallway the day after. They generally must be able to go up and down 2-4 steps and walk 50 to 100 feet before the hospital, usually in 3-5 days. The improved strength that people gain from pre-hab can help them achieve some of those milestones in less time. For more information: Pro Motion Rehab: 828-837-0400

Outcomes to Expect: For Chronic and Acute Pain Patients Pain elimination during the session, 50% - 100% lasting pain relief, and/or increase in pain-free ROM immediately after the session suitable for almost all common back, neck, shoulder, knee, pelvis, and hip pain patience. Plan a Memorable Family Reunion

F

amily reunions this summer are sure to take on special meaning as families reunite after months apart. Organizing such a momentous event may feel like a lot of work, but thinking of it in smaller pieces can make it easier to manage. Finding a date that works for everyone may be the biggest hurdle. Once that essential detail is set, start planning your family get-together with these tips from the travel experts at Vrbo: Decide on a celebration style. Family reunions come in all shapes and sizes. You might plan a gathering for a single day with a big meal and plenty of time for chatting with relatives, or it may be a multi-day affair filled with activities that get all ages involved. Pick the place. The location of your reunion depends on many factors. In some cases, families plan for a location that’s easily accessible for the majority, like a midway point or a city where a large branch of the family tree is rooted. Other families build reunions around the head of the family and plan the location around where the eldest members of the family reside. Still other reunions are destination getaways with multiple households in one vacation location. Choose where you’ll stay. Figuring out what kind of lodging best suits your reunion depends on a variety of considerations, but the larger the group, the more challenging it can be. A vacation rental home may be an option when you’re bringing multiple families together under one roof or plan to stay for several days. Many vacation rentals even offer amenities like pools or hot tubs that can be enjoyed privately rather than shared with the rest of the resort or hotel guests. A tool like Vrbo’s Trip Board of reunionfriendly homes can help you find inspiration for a perfect place. Plan activities. Depending on your family’s style, planning how everyone will pass the time may be a scheduled itinerary

or a loose list of potential things to do. Either way, leave time for casual conversation and simply enjoying a few moments together, as well as lots of entertainment to keep kids occupied while the adults catch up. Create a menu. From potluck to catering and everything in between, there are numerous options when it comes to feeding a reunion crowd. You might have everyone bring their own food, ask each family take turns serving meals or plan easy bar-style meals like tacos or walking nachos. It’s a good idea to coordinate your menu plans so you don’t waste food or have duplicate ingredients in the refrigerator. Remember to plan for extra snacks and desserts, too. Many homes available through Vrbo include access to refrigerators and fully equipped kitchens, making it easy to store extra food for the gathering. Incorporate your heritage. What sets a family reunion apart from other types of gatherings is the focus on family. Make your reunion special by incorporating special aspects of your heritage, whether it’s a monogrammed centerpiece for the dining table or photos of multiple generations you scatter around the venue. Another idea for a multi-generational family reunion is a slideshow of photo memories set to music that plays as the precursor to a family movie night under the stars. GET OUTSIDE THIS SUMMER WITH THESE

T

here’s nothing better than getting outside during the summer. Not only can it help reduce stress, but it can also bring more energy and excitement to your life. According to a study from the International Journal of Environmental Health Research, it only takes about 20 minutes to feel the positive effects of being outside, even if you’re not exercising. So whether you’re swimming, running or taking a long walk, getting outdoors and being active can make a world of difference. “Over the last year, we have seen many people turn to the outdoors as a way to escape and have fun,” said Pam Kermisch, Polaris Chief Customer Engagement & Growth Officer. “It’s a trend we don’t see going away anytime soon, which is why we are always working to provide new possibilities for outdoor activities.” How you can spend more time outside this summer Whether you’re exploring the concrete jungle or hiking in the woods, there are plenty of ways you can stay active and safe outdoors. Here are a few activities that can be fun for you and the whole family: Getting out on the water For those that live near a lake, river or even the ocean, getting out on the water can help you cool off on a hot summer day. Canoeing, kayaking, surfing and whitewater rafting are excellent summer water sports to get involved in. However, if those activities aren’t your thing, enjoying time on the water with a boat or pontoon ride is also a great option. Exploring the unknown with Polaris Adventures Your summer outdoor adventures should take you through

uncharted territories. So, if you’re looking for a new way to explore the outdoors this summer, Polaris Adventures provides unique and safe ride and drive experiences for you and the whole family. With 160 locations across the U.S., you can journey through epic destinations using Polaris’ vehicles, including side-by-sides, such as a RANGER, GENERAL and RZR or the three-wheeled, open-air roadster, Slingshot. Whether you prefer self-guided or guided, there are adventures for every experience level. Doing bike tours Getting outdoors doesn’t have to be outside of city limits. While nature can be breathtaking, the city’s sights and sounds can also be beautiful. Exploring a city on foot can be timeconsuming and exhausting for some. However, bike tours can help you cover more ground in less time. Plus, with the right tour guide, you could find hidden gems most people don’t know about. Exploring national parks and forests A lot of Americans are doing long-distance travel this summer. After a year of restrictions due to the pandemic, a recent report from ABC News says travel numbers are surging as people get vaccinated. According to Airbnb data, more Americans are deciding to go off the beaten path and staying in less populated areas, many of which have national parks nearby. America’s 432 national park sites include all kinds of exciting outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking and birdwatching. The pandemic has made many people notice the beauty and wonder of America’s national parks and has made them want to keep their spirit alive for generations to come. Companies like Polaris recognize the benefits and enjoyment national
