Any medical treatment is not complete or effective without accurate documentation as any physician relying on medical transcription outsourcing knows. The same goes for any research activity undertaken in the medical field. Take for instance the studies that are ongoing regarding the health benefits of coffee. These studies would involve a number of interviews and recordings that need to be documented accurately for evaluation and sharing among others. A Coffee a Day May Keep the Cardiologist Away Research suggests that people who drink coffee are at lesser risk of dying from a number of causes, including heart disease, stroke, and liver disease among others. It is not clear though, whether the coffee itself is responsible for this health benefit. The connection between coffee and better health was revealed in two large studies – it didn’t matter whether the coffee was caffeinated or not. Those who drank more cups of coffee experienced a higher effect. About 2.25 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide every day. The significance of the latest research studies is that they involved large and diverse groups of participants. The first research studied coffee consumption among more than 185,855 white and nonwhite American participants aged 45 to 75 years, recruited in the early 1990s and followed up for an average of more than 16 years. The researchers found that drinking one cup of coffee a day was linked to 12 percent lower risk of death at any age from any cause. Those who consume two to three cups a day had an 18 percent lower risk. The second study looked at the connection between coffee consumption and mortality in diverse European populations belonging to 10 European countries.

participated, recruited between 1992 and 2000. These participants were also followed up for more than 16 years. After taking into account certain factors such as age, smoking status and education it was found that people who drank three or more cups of coffee a day had an 18 percent lower risk of death for men and 8 percent lower risk of death for women at any age. The study also considered a subset of 14,800 participants, and found that coffeedrinkers had better results on many biological markers including liver enzymes and glucose control. Coffee alone May Not Be behind the Overall Lower Risk Experts warn however, that the two studies do not show that drinking coffee alone was behind the lower overall risk, pointing out that

It could be that coffee drinkers are healthier in various ways or that those who are unwell drink less coffee.

The levels of coffee drinking were reported by the participants themselves, and not monitored

Some participants consumed both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee

The European study only looked at coffee consumption levels at one point in time.

Study authors agree that these studies are observational and it requires more work to be sure about the beneficial effects of coffee. It is not clear which of the many biologically active components within coffee might be potentially providing the health benefits. Studies such as the above are great eye openers for cardiologists, neurologists and others in the medical team caring for heart disease and stroke patients. They are equally interesting for medical transcription service providers as well because new treatment modalities emerge from such research, which they will have to understand. The above studies showed that higher consumption of coffee was associated with lower risk for death in African Americans, Japanese Americans, Latinos, whites and Europeans. This association did not vary by country, which seems to endorse the health benefits of coffee.
