STAT Radiology Reports on Patient Portals Enhance Care,

says New Study

Web-based portals allow patients to view their finalized radiology results quickly and communicate with physicians on their ow healthcare.

According to a new study by researchers from the University of Michigan (U-M), patients are as interested in their radiology reports as providers are and want the results as soon as possible. AuntMinnie.com reported on this study which points out that posting the finalized radiology reports on web-based portals allows patients to view them, track their own care, and communicate with their doctors. This also helps physicians identify delayed access to reports and other issues, which could be used to deliver a patient-centric experience. STAT radiology transcription services are a proven way to ensure accurate and timely reporting of imaging procedures. The U-M study found that such prompt and timely reports can enhance care by improving patient-provider interaction. Analysis of Patient Use on Online Portals Value-based care emphasizes patient participation and patient access to their medical information is a key aspect of this. According to the lead author of the U-M study, which was published online in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, “The patient portal is a great source of unbiased data about what patients really want from their healthcare providers.” The researchers went about their study as follows: 

They did a search on all messages that patients submitted through the U-M's patient portal between October and December 2014

The search was performed using keywords such as "x-ray," "xray," "ct," "mri," "scan," "image," and "radiology".

The messages were categorized by content.

The demographics of the patients who submitted messages were studied.

The team also analyzed turnaround time (TAT) for radiology results and found that the overall median TAT for radiology reports was 5 hours, while the median time for the provider to review the information was 70 hours and the median time for the provider to put the report on the patient portal was 101 hours. The study recommended that physicians could increase patient satisfaction by releasing the reports within three to five days.

Medical Transcription Outsourcing for Quality STAT Reports For radiology reports, timely turnaround is a challenge. Referring physicians cannot make prompt patient care decisions if radiology results took too long to process and document. Fortunately, experienced radiology transcription service providers can deliver STAT imaging reports from dictated files. Established medical transcription companies have the manpower and resources to help radiologists provide quality final reports on patient portals. In addition to an expert team of radiology transcriptionists, leading outsourcing companies have advanced digital dictation and transcription modalities to handle any type of STAT transcription requirement for the specialty. According to the U-M researchers, radiologists should realize that they are not just communicating with physicians -- patients often read their results and their involvement in their own healthcare is growing. The team reported that some private practices are catering to this demand by offering consults for complicates cases, where patients can interact with the radiologist and review the results together.
