AN RÍ RÁ 2010
Welcome to the 2010 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival! Dear Friends of Irish and Gaelic Culture: e are proud to offer you one of the crown jewels of the festival season here in Butte, Montana. This is the longest-running Irish cultural celebration in Montana, with this its eighth year in Butte, and its tenth year in total. This is your home-grown festival, offering you the best in Irish entertainment, workshops, history, film, literature and fun. While our headliner presentations are nationally and internationally known, you will also have the opportunity to see the finest musicians and dancers from Montana and the region. Your An Rí Rá Festival Committee has worked hard to bring you this family oriented event. You will find something for all ages here, and go home with memories to treasure for years to come. The founders of the Montana Gaelic Cultural Society, in particular, Tom Sullivan and Richard Newman, are to be commended for their vision and hard work in creating this organization. Their dream of creating a “Montana Gaeltacht” that would preserve and promote Irish culture has served to create an atmosphere in which this goal is being achieved. Today, there are classes in Irish language; Irish dance, Irish music, and more and more Montanans of Irish descent are celebrating their heritage by keeping it alive. There also is an Irish Studies Program at the University of Montana in Missoula. One of the goals of the Society is to create an Irish and Gaelic Cultural Centre, so the vibrancy of this effort will be available all year long. This festival is designed to help raise funds for these activities and to build a fund for a cultural center, as well. As you participate in and enjoy this year’s An Rí Rá, you will hear the strains of traditional Irish music, and you will see dancing by extraordinary international and regional dancers. You also will see bilingual (Irish and English) signage. We look forward to helping you with pronunciations and translations. Thank you for attending the 2010 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival. We hope you enjoy all the events we have to offer you, and that you will tell all your friends and family, so they can enjoy it with you in 2011. Sincerely,
W

Headliners:
Makem & Spain Brothers Makem and Spain Brothers return to their ‘Home Away from Home’ ack by popular demand, the Makem and Spain Brothers return this year for the 2010 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival. Since the first time they performed here, this group has considered Butte their “Home Away from Home.” Several years ago, they wrote a song which captures their feelings for this city and its people, and they recorded a DVD with that title at the Mother Lode Theatre at that time. Such a relationship between performers and place are not usual, and there are many underlying reasons for this one. Every generation has a few acts that define where a musical genre is going, performers so confident in their chosen field that they are able to completely embrace the genre and yet introduce something new to it. In Irish folk music today, that act is the Makem and Spain Brothers. Not in the past 30 years has a group taken the international stage with such vocal power and stage presence, capturing the essence of their genre, while standing out as something truly unique. A host of various instruments and five male vocals, using precise three-part harmonies blend perfectly for what many have described as a wall of sound. The Makem and Spain Brothers are at their best onstage where their talent and enthusiasm draw in fans who have never experienced the joy of folk music.
B
Makem and Spain brothers not to be missed. The band of brothers who were once considered the new kids on the block, have honed their craft over nearly two decades of international performances and are now one of the truly stalwart, road-tested Irish vocal groups available. They have played before millions of people from Canada to Texas, from California to the Caribbean and over to Ireland, highlighting national PBS specials and popular Irish talk shows along the way.
The Prodigals will get your Irish up T his New York Irish band started in 1997. One of the most successful bands to emerge from the East-Coast Irish scene, The Prodigals combine brilliant original lyrics and melody with a genuine passion for the traditional music of Ireland and a funky, anarchic energy. Calling their genre of music “jig punk”, the Prodigals fall within a tradition epitomized by the Pogues and Black 47, merging traditional Irish melodic roots with rock rhythms. Band members are Gregory Grene (button accordion and lead vocals), Trifon Dimitrov (bass and backup vocals), Dave Fahy (guitar and lead vocals), and Chris Berry (drums). The band has its own distinctive sound, particularly distinguished by lead melodic roles being filled by button-key accordion and bass along with

to fans of traditional music, rock that sets them apart. He is also the writer of much of the bands original material. Their arrangements bring a traditional sensibility to the bass and drum driven sound of Celtic rock. The hard driving rhythm section keeps the band on the rock and roll road. Their song “Open Reel” was played in the film Pride and Glory during the bar fight scene between Edward Norton and Colin Farrell The Prodigals have played throughout the United States, from Los Angeles and Las Vegas to Chicago, Boston and Maine, as well as abroad in Canada, Europe and Ireland, but they remain firmly rooted in Manhattan. The Prodigals call Paddy Reilly’s their home when in New York City.

Mickey Spain Musical Jamboree ur American Children’s Folk Music Tradition is alive and well and has no signs of slowing down thanks to The Mickey Spain Musical Jamboree. In a program for children and adults alike, the Musical Jamboree brings a new and exciting program to An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival this year. Kathleen Keane & Tantrum merica’s new trad-influenced power sextet will perform as one of the headliner groups at An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival. The group features Kathleen Keane, multi-instrumentalist (fiddle, whistles and box), singer and dancer. An Rí Rá fans will remember Kathleen’s appearance here in 2003. Her credits include “Cinderella Man,” “The Road to Perdition,” “Backdraft,” and a Number One record in Billboard’s World Music Chart. She has graced stages around the world with numerous groups, including Gaelic Storm. Kathleen’s dance history is equally impressive. She is a champion Irish stepdancer, choreographer and instructor. She began her dancing career at the age of five with the Dennis Dennehy School of Irish Dancing (where Michael Flatley (Riverdance, Lord of the Dance) studied Irish dancing.) She quickly progressed over the next few years accumulating hundreds of medals and trophies, having reached the open championship level by the young age of nine, and winning the title of Midwest Regional Champion at her first regional Oireachtus.

Fiddlers provide an array of music.
Dillon Junior Fiddlers he Dillon Junior Fiddlers so delighted audiences at the last three years’ An Rí Rá that the committee was besieged by requests that we bring them back. These young people, from the southwest Montana area in and around Dillon, present an extraordinarily entertaining and talented array of performances. The group formed more than 24 years ago in a basement with four young musicians, a couple of parents and an instructor. It has now expanded to an ensemble of about 25 players. Musical direction for the group is by Sandy James, a former Montana State Men’s Fiddle Champion. A scholarship fund has afforded group and individual instruction from many of the top fiddlers in the nation for the Dillon Junior Fiddlers. This group of young performers has had the opportunity to perform in Japan, Washington, D.C., and many other venues. But these young people also have a strong commitment to community service, particular in the area of senior citizen outreach. They play at convalescent centers, benefits and community functions. Their growing reputation has led them to host a national-class fiddle contest in Dillon each year.

Dublin Gulch a Butte favorite t An Ri Ra 2008, the announcer presented “Dublin Gulch” as “the house band”. They have the distinction of being the only band to play at the Montana Irish Festival every year going back to its inception in Missoula in 1999. Tom Powers and Mick Cavanaugh hail from Butte: Tom sings most of the lead vocals and plays the bodhran; Mick plays whistles, guitar, tenor banjo, and mandolin. Helena’s Jim Schulz contributes vocals, guitar, mandolin, and bouzouki, and Missoula’s John Joyner adds fiddle, banjo, and backing vocals. Tom and Mick have been at the core of the group since St. Patrick’s Day 1993, while John and Jim started contributing their talents in 2002. The band draws many of its songs from the musical works that emerged during the folk music revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. They also perform songs by a variety of contemporary Irish songwriters and tunes from the Celtic tradition. The group’s songs cover both

serous and humorous topics and tell stories of Irish people and Irish history. In addition, they work to pass down this heritage to younger dancers and musicians. They are very involved with the family program “Handing Down the Heritage,” which has become an important part of Butte’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration. A crowd favorite for their combination of traditional jigs and reels and songs both humorous and poignant, the band is often seen in the company of Butte’s Tiernan Irish Dancers. They recently released a long-awaited recording aptly titled “Dirty Old Town.” The studio project includes many pieces the band has been performing live for some time, and a number of musical guests contribute to the expanded arrangements. Born in Cork, Ireland, Aodh Óg O’Tuama comes from a family of poets, writers, musicians & teachers. He studied music at University College Cork in Ireland and Stanford University in California and worked as a Sound and Lighting Designer in professional theatre for 28 years. Californian Christy Martin grew up in a family of musicians and dancers and began studying the Sitar at age 15 with a protégé of famed sitar maestro Ravi Shankar. Christy later discovered the rich sound of Celtic music, which prompted her to get her first hammered dulcimer.

Butte’s own Tiernan dancers step up T
he Tiernan Irish Dancers, a traditional Irish step-dancing school and performance group, was founded in January 2004. The dancers range in age from 5-18 years. At the 2003 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival in Butte, Trinity Academy of Irish Dance founder and artistic director, Mark Howard fell in love with the “passion to learn” that he discovered in the children out here. After years of requests by Irish dance organizations in the West, Trinity became the first Midwest/Eastern program to answer the much-needed call for elevated consistency, professionalism and expertise. The name Tiernan (which is a synonym for Trinity and means “God”) was chosen and the three-city Tiernan Irish Dance organization was born. Tiernan is now the sister school of Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison’s Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, with branches in Butte and Helena. The training these Montana dancers

Trinity is a uniquely IrishAmerican company, and was the foundation for the progressive Irish dance style which led to commercial productions such as “Riverdance.” Most of the company’s dancers come through the prestigious Trinity Academy of Irish Dance, which is the Chicago/Milwaukeebased school that has earned an unparalleled number of team world titles for the United States at the World Championships of Irish Dance. Trinity is not an organization to rest on its laurels as the world’s best. Mark Howard has expanded the company’s range and repertoire in a host of imaginative and new directions. Trinity’s performances cross both cultural and disciplinary boundaries in significant ways. The result is a new and innovative presentation that surpasses the source without losing its essence. Trinity is accompanied by its own band of world-class musicians. They include: Barret Harvey, Christopher Layer and Brendan O’Shea. WWW.MTSTANDARD.COM

‘Butte: The Original’ film to be shown at Mother Lode Locally made film captures spirit of The Mining City A recently released movie about Butte, Mont. will be shown during An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival. The film, Butte: the Original, premiered at the Mother Lode Theatre in June. The 84-minute documentary film, written and produced by Butte filmmakers Dick Maney and B.J. McKenzie, is a tribute to the people of Butte, a mining town that has built strong community bonds over the course of its colorful history. The film’s production was sponsored by Atlantic Richfield. Instead of actors, the film features a cast of local characters who include a dozen Butte miners, writers, and others who relate their personal experiences working and living on “the richest hill on earth.” Historic photographs and neverbefore-seen footage of Butte help tell the story of a tough, resilient mining town. The film will be screened at the Mother Lode Theatre on Saturday, Aug. 14 at 5:45 p.m., and on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 3:30 p.m. WWW.MTSTANDARD.COM

The Montana Gaelic Cultural Society Ó Thús (From the Beginning) The Montana Gaelic Cultural Society (MGCS) has been active since 1997. During that time, the group founded by Thomas Sullivan and Richard Newman, two engineers from Missoula, has sponsored classes in the Irish language, Irish dance classes, music and drama presentations, and ten successful Irish Festivals. There is now an Irish Studies Program at the University of Montana, and work is being done toward the establishment of an Irish Cultural Centre in Butte. Aidhmeanna an Chumainn (Society Goals) It is the aim of the Society to continue developing such programs, increasing membership and support so that access to the Irish and Gaelic culture is provided to all Montana communities. To accomplish this, it is vital to build membership, with an eye toward establishing access to the organization throughout the state. An Mhana le MGCS — Ní Neart Go Cur Le Ceile (Unity is Strength) In keeping with the motto of MGCS, the group continues to work to establish connections and strong communication with all Montana organizations interested in promot-
ing and establishing programs in Gaelic culture. The MGCS Board of Directors has agreed to reach out to all such groups with similar goals. If you have such a group, and share these interests, please contact us at info@mtgaelic.org. Irish Studies Program The Montana Gaelic Cultural Society has been involved in the promotion of Irish language instruction at the University level since 2001. Courses were offered in Missoula, Butte and Helena under an arrangement with UM and MGCS. The response to the community classes were strong, and this effort has resulted in an expanded academic presence in Irish Studies program at the University of Montana in Missoula. In addition, there are several non-credit study groups meeting on a regular basis, and Irish immersion weekends are held several times a year. Information on these weekends is available at the MGCS web site, www.mtgaelic.org. Become Involved? If you are interested in any aspect of our activities, have experience which may help in any way, or if you would just like to have more information, contact MGCS info@mtgaelic.org

Dennis Keane, pastor of St. Agnes parish in Red Lodge, Montana. Father Keane is originally from Galway. This traditional Sunday event is open to people from all denominations, and represents several meaningful elements of the heritage of Montana Irish People. The origins of Mass held in open air come from a long and turbulent series of historical events in Ireland. All are welcome to this service, regardless of denomination. The Mass will be held at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 15, in Emma Park. While there will be some chairs available, you may wish to bring your own lawn chair, sunblock, and a hat or umbrella for shade.
