BOARD OF DIRECTORS continued

Commentary:

“

As a business owner, I have always relied on a local Chamber of Commerce to be a resource for an immediate connection to the business community. In considering opening a new business in Butte, I was impressed and excited with the connection and unity between the Chamber of Commerce, business owners, and community leaders. The Butte Chamber of Commerce has quickly been the link for me to network with other business owners that provide new business opportunities, friendships, and support for the community’s growth. With that, I am excited to be relocating back to Butte and look forward to utilizing the many events and resources that the Chamber of Commerce provides as well as contributing to the community by becoming involved.

Each year the Civic Improvement committee presents Landscaping Awards to the businesses who have improved their property during the course of the previous year. TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE The Butte Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee was formed in March of 2008. The purpose of the committee is to secure funding to maintain the current flights, to seek additional flights, and apply for a Small Community Air Service Grant. Butte was successful in receiving two Small Community Air Service Grants. Matching monies for these grants was needed, and through the efforts of the Transportation Committee an excess of $65,000 in donations and pledges have been received to date. This money is utilized on an ongoing basis to maintain and hopefully improve air service to the Bert Mooney Airport.

Tourism promoter likes market, product BY TIM TRAINOR of The Montana Standard

indy Perdue-Dolan’s job is to sell Butte, and the new head of the Convention and Visitors Bureau thinks she has quite a market for the product. Perdue-Dolan started Sept. 1 at a job that had been left vacant for more than 18 months. Her salary is paid by the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce and the Butte Tourism Business Improvement District, a recently created organization that collects a $1 per night fee from area hotels. Perdue-Dolan is new to the tourism game, but has a varied background in journalism and political organizing. She was born and raised in the Boston area and “I THINK BUTTE moved to Butte 20 years ago. She spent time in the Mining HAS A LOT TO City working as a journalist for both KTVM and KXLF OFFER A television stations. Leading the CVB, where she will need to use her ability to form relationships, close business deals and represent and sell Butte, is a position where she feels comfortable. “I think Butte has a lot to offer a traveler looking for a new, unique experience, she said. Perdue-Dolan said the state has geared its marketing to the “eco-traveler, a middle- to upperclass family in the somewhat nearby urban centers of Chicago, Minneapolis and Seattle. That demographic would be drawn to Butte, she said, because of the city’s

But the city’s attractions need to be marketed better, she said, and they need to work together — from underground mining to trolley tours, from the Berkeley Pit viewing stand to the city’s bars and restaurants. Getting all those forces pulling in the right direction will be Perdue-Dolan’s job.

MARKO LUCICH Executive director driving Butte Chamber forward BY GEORGE PLAVEN ~ OF THE MONTANA STANDARD

M

arko Lucich remembers a conversation he had with a Bozeman woman about eight years ago, shortly after taking over as executive director of the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce. “What exactly are you doing about your Berkeley Pit?” she asked him. “Well, what are you doing about your Berkeley Pit?” Lucich replied. Confused, she took the bait; “We have no Berkeley Pit,” she answered. “Oh, every place has a Berkeley Pit,” Lucich said. “We just know where ours is.” Lucich loves Butte, which is why he saddled up with the chamber after more than 28 years as a juvenile probation officer.

Director ... Continued from Page 4 The town’s mining past may have left a few scars, but he points to the community’s resiliency in bringing business back to the “Richest Hill on Earth.

WORKING TOGETHER The chamber is a cog in that process, Lucich said, but they are not alone. Local government, Butte Local Development and all residents work together toward creating an attractive, vibrant place to live. “It’s always a group effort, he said. “We get so much done, thanks to our cooperation. Lucich in particular mentioned the recent efforts that landed Butte the new southwest Montana veterans’ home, and — yes — renovations to make the Berkeley Pit a more attractive tourist destination. In both cases, Lucich saw the community band together. “Through all these accomplishments, you can see that when you put the right people together, you can get something done. That’s Butte’s strength, he said. Where the chamber comes in is to really promote the area, and make sure the right people recognize that Butte is a proactive, friendly place to do business. There are a number of tools at their disposal to reach that goal, Lucich said. About four years ago, they brought in Chamber Choices Health Insurance for small business owners and their employees. Monthly business card socials also give startups a chance to build relationships and find partnerships, Lucich said. For three years, the chamber also ran the Leadership Education and Development program, or L.E.A.D., for young professionals to get involved in the community and do their own networking.

Congratulations Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce on 100 years!

ON AUG. 3, 2007, the new visitors’ center at the Berkeley Pit opened to the public.

Lucich would like to start that program again next year, he said. “What really sells a community is when you can see that same enthusiasm across the board, Lucich said. “That’s what tells people a community is for real.

A

s Todd Tregidga wraps up his one year as board president with the Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce, he believes they have laid some nice groundwork to help further promote the area. Coming into her term later this month, Kelly Smith wants to build on that momentum to attract new members and give them the tools to succeed. Both are encouraged by developments to the chamber’s Tregidga long-term business plan that they say will strengthen their organization and its mission. “We want to continue to be a major positive force behind the betterment of our community, Tregidga said. A marketing and membership subcommittee is looking over the chamber’s revenue sources (apart from dues), and figuring ways to attract more people, Tregidga said. While ideas are still up for discussion, one would include making the Berkeley Pit a more interactive and interpretive site. Another significant move last year, Tregidga said, was to push the creation of the Tourism Business Improvement District, of TBID.

The district collects $1 extra per room from local lodging, which it puts into a pool to help promote tourism. It is expected to generate about $230,000 per year. “Our board and staff recognized that as a priority, and really rallied behind it, Tregidga said. “It gives us more resources to reach farther. The TBID board will decide how to best spend that money, which can also be used to help Advantage Butte as they bid on different events to bring into town. Smith, general manager of the Butte Hampton Inn, said her goal as new president is to continue to add value to chamber Smith membership and make sure all members have the tools to grow their business. For example, she said businesses can benefit by listing themselves on the chamber’s website — especially if they do not have a website of their own. Small business seminars and social gatherings are also great opportunities for networking, Smith said. “We just want to make sure people are aware of our resources, she said. “Our staff truly is amazing, and they really know how to take care of people. Tregidga, who works for PPL Montana, will stay with the chamber board after being re-elected to a second three-year term. He said they are supportive of so much in town, and there is always a new project staring them in the face.

THE PROGRESS With those resources in place, Butte is fostering the right environment for growth, Lucich said. The results are starting to show, with the M&M Cigar Store reopening, FedEx Freight facility coming to town and Quarry Brewery moving to its new location on West Broadway. A new Walgreens and Holiday Inn Express are also coming soon. “Given the state of the economy now, to see all the development and building in our community is just amazing,” Lucich said. Chamber goals moving forward next year include refining its own long-term business plan, and continuing work with retail on “shop local” campaigns. As for dealing with those who judge Butte as a toxic town? That approach has never changed. “What you see is what you get. We’re not phony,” Lucich said. “If what happened to Butte happened to another community, it would probably be a ghost town by now. We keep coming back, and we’re even stronger today.”

AT ONE TIME, THE FINLEN HOTEL housed the Butte Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber dinner Thursday; ‘Dueling Pianos’ entertains The Butte-Silver Bow Chamber of Commerce hosts its 100th annual dinner Thursday, Oct. 27, in the Butte Civic Center. Tickets are $50 each, which includes entertainment by the 176 Keys Dueling Pianos. No-host cocktails start at 5:30 p.m., with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the Dueling Pianos at 8:15 p.m. For tickets, call the chamber at 723-3711. The 176 Keys Dueling Pianos is one of the top traveling dueling pianos shows in the country, having done more traveling shows (including more corporate parties and weddings) than any other. 176 Keys owner, Sam Ferguson, and Jefrey Taylor hail from Phoenix, Ariz., this week by way of Maine. Sam has been dueling for 10 years, has run his business for eight, and is back in Montana for the first time in four years. Jefrey has been dueling for more than 15 years, and has been with 176 Keys for three years. He has a music degree from Berklee College of Music. The 176 Keys Dueling Pianos show is a rockin’ good time for the audience and the performers. They play fun songs, and encourage people to sing, clap, and laugh along. At the audience request, they will also make time to give a few light-hearted roasts to friends and family. Dueling Pianos is not two piano players trying to out-perform each other. Rather, the two players work together to provide a high-energy show in which the audience is as much a part of the entertainment as is the performers. Dueling Pianos is not a concert. The 176 Keys show takes popular songs, requested by the audience, and encourage singing along and other participation.

ALL ABOARD! In July 1979, these young people got a tour of the Mining City on Old No. 1. In December 2004, the Butte Chamber retired the Old No. 1 tourist trolley after nearly 30 years as a summertime fixture in Butte. A new trolley was purchased in February 2005, taking to the streets with its shiny red and green chassis and elegant wood interior. A happy Marko Lucich, executive director of the Chamber, was flanked by smiling chamber members, officials and residents as they unveiled the 2005 trolley. It cost $95,000, down from the asking price of $108,000, which fit into the Chamber’s budget. Because of smart shopping and great timing, the Chamber was able to purchase the brand-new trolley, a demo model with only about 3,000 miles, for nearly the cost of a used trolley.
