Faith THE WAY OF THE CROSS Walls of St. Ann’s Church adorned with sculptures depicting Christ’s journey Stations of Cross help Roman Catholics remember Christ’s crucifixion

Sculptures: The iron and bronze sculptures adorning the walls of St. Ann’s sanctuary were designed and primarily created in 1968 by artist, George Conkey, an art teacher at MSU. Conkey died before he could complete the Stations, and his wife, Michael, and his art student Lyndon Pomeroy finished the project.

f all the services, ceremonies, rites and rituals within the Christian Church, there is, perhaps, none is so poignant as the Roman Catholic observation of “The Way of the Cross.” Since the early 1200s, the devotion has been an integral part of Lenten services within the Church. More commonly referred to as the Stations of the Cross, the service commemorates 14 events, which led up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. “It was popularized by St. Francis of Assisi, who also popularized the Christian Creche,” said the Rev. Tom Haffey, pastor at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Haffey described the Stations as a paraliturgical service, created in Medieval Europe to help those who were unable to make the pilgrimage to the Holy Land experience and

Haffey said the he made the pilgrimage to Israel in 1999 and walked in Christ’s footsteps along “The Way of the Cross.” “It’s a touching spiritual experience. The Cross is such a powerful symbol because it’s about surrender to God in a world

REV. LANNY ROUNDS “… and surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” — Matthew 28:20

even seeing or reading — unable to react to the news of the death of thousands with anything more than a sigh and the click of a key on our keyboards. Third, we can pull back, look away and try to ignore the onrush of the world around us by refusing to access the news points available to us in an attempt to save our sanity and help us cope. And finally, we can prayerfully invite the God of the Bible who promised, “I am with you always,” (Matthew 28:20) to go with us; to lead us through our days and through the onslaught of all of the news and information going on around us. Not too surprisingly, God, and God alone, has the full and true perspective on all of life (and the news about it). We would be wise to seek that perspective. We would also be wise to invite God through His Son Jesus Christ to make His heart known to us so that we might learn to live our lives with circumspection and compassion.

Haffey said the Easter candle is the same candle used in other important observations within the Catholic Church. “The Easter candle, the Baptism candle and the candle we put out at the funeral are all the same candle because it is all the same story — birth, death, resurrection,” he said.

Today we live in a world of nearly instant and constant information and news. Wars, earthquakes, tsunamis and tragedies worldwide demand our attention and energy. In fact the sheer flood of it all forces each of us into one of several responses. First, there are those who dwell on all of the news until they worry themselves to a frazzle, unable to sleep or function. The toll on our physical health can be alarming. Second, we can try to take it all in, but in the Pastor Lanny Rounds process of doing so we serves the First become numb to the true Presbyterian Church in impact of what we’re Butte.

Join us at First Baptist Church this Easter at 11 AM for a special Holiday Concert with Accounted For Our #1 mission is to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ through the medium of music, that souls may be saved. Galations 3:6-7 reads: Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. This is the verse we chose our name from. Praise the Lord for His indescribable gift of Jesus Christ, our Advocate. If you have enormous trials and struggles, we pray that the Lord will reveal something new about Himself to you through us and strengthen your walk.

The Church tells us that we begin our watch well after night-fall, for it is the darkness of the world that the new fire of Christ's light and hope pierces and overcomes!!! So we begin our vigil in the outside darkness this year after 9:45pm. To be present is a sacrifice; it requires an effort and some inconvenience!
