4 FESTIVAL GUIDE JULY/AUGUST 2011
Montana Folk Festival July 8-10, 2011 Butte, MT he Montana Folk Festival will “return” for the first time ever this July. After three years as the host for the National Folk Festival, Montana organizers have decided that as long as the community and statewide support for the free event remains strong, the festival will continue as the Montana Folk Festival. From the beginning, before the first note played in the first of three successful Nationals, the goal has been to develop a successor festival. In 2011, the name will change, but the Montana Folk Festival will be a new and exciting event, which at the same time will remain very familiar to anyone who has attended the Nationals in the previous three years. The Montana will continue to feature multiple stages with continuous live performances by some of the best traditional musical performers in the nation, including Montana’s finest, some of the region’s best traditional artists, great ethnic and festival foods, a lively Family Area, and Folklife demonstrations and workshops that focus on a theme that highlights Montana’s heritage. All of this is set in the spectacular setting of Butte, Montana part of the Nation’s largest Historic Landmark District and surrounded by tall buildings, mine yards and the Northern Rockies. Festival organizers have invited other organizations, individuals and corporations to support the transition from the National to a longterm, permanent tourism engine and cultural magnet that will continue to feature top national, as
T
well as showcase Montana’s rich heritage. “We want the substantial economic impact to be a permanent asset for Montana. We want to build on the foundation of the massive effort, precious experience and valuable infrastructure,” said Tom Staples, president of Mainstreet Uptown Butte, the Montana non-profit that invited the three-year national extravaganza to the Treasure State in 2007. “The Folk Festival has brought tens of thousands of new visitors to Montana, and is helping to market the best of the state to new and returning friends,” Staples added. The Montana Folk Festival will continue to highlight the natural and cultural wonders of Montana. From the beginning, the goal has been to build coalitions and collaborations of arts and festival sponsors to ultimately support established summer festivals throughout Montana as well as to create a permanent base of support for the annual Montana event. Visit the official website to volunteer or learn about the free performances, demonstrations and workshops. You can also visit on Facebook or send an email questions or comments to geverett@montanafolkfestival.com. Evel Knievel Days
I
n late July, Evel Knievel’s hometown of Butte plays host to the world’s greatest celebration for the world’s greatest daredevil in the finest fashion. Started in 2002, the three-day event draws thousands of visitors from all over the world to the Mining City’s Uptown during the fourth weekend in July. Spanky Spangler, Ryan Capes, Trigger Gumm and the Kaptain himself, Robbie Knievel have all performed headline stunts for EK Days, not to mention dozens of dazzling feats attempted by some of the country's greatest stuntmen and daredevils. Before his death in 2007, Evel took the stage at the annual hoopla to welcome his fans, promote the event — of which he was very proud — and to thank all of the daring stuntmen who showed up to perform in honor of the festival’s namesake. This year’s festival will not disappoint fans who have come to expect the best, with featured guests including Spanky Spangler, See EVEL, Page 13

The show — a favorite at Evel Knievel Days — is an authentic slice of baseball and apple-pie Americana. The first motor dromes appeared right here in the United States in the early 1900s, making the Wall of Death show America’s original extreme motorcycle thrill show. American Motor Drome Company is dedicated to keeping the sport alive and to passing on to future generations of Americans a view of our history, in both live entertainment and motorcycles.

three years, more than 180 million people have watched Spanky perform his amazing stunts. As far back as he can remember, Spanky’s driving desire was to be a Hollywood stuntman. He trained constantly and rigorously in all varieties of sports. After enlisting in the army, first as a paratrooper and later as a Green Beret, he became a decorated soldier and the youngest Green Beret to this date. His experiences in the armed forces helped prepare him for what was to come. Spanky has performed in front of crowds in excess of 300,000 all over the world.
Keith Sayers F
reestyle motocross rider Keith Sayers will be back for this year’s Evel Knievel days, leading his team in death-defying stunts high in the air. Sayers and his riders are always a crowd pleaser as they fly through the air and turn back flips on their bikes. Sayers, a native Montanan, was born and raised in Butte, the hometown of Evel Knievel. Keith has been riding motorcycles for most of his life. He bought his first motorcycle at the age of 9 from his neighbor for $10, and from there it has been one epic ride for this hard working Rocky Mountain kid. In 1995, at the age of 12, Keith started racing motocross which led him to three Montana state motocross championships. From there, Keith put in the time to advance himself in racing but found that Montana was a difficult area to become noticed. Finding new inspiration in 1997, Keith started performing freestyle motocross demos during race intermissions. He caught on quickly, and in 2002 at the Unleash the Freaks tour, Keith was introduced to Steve Miller from SCS Racing.

24 FESTIVAL GUIDE JULY/AUGUST 2011
AUGUST 12-14, 2011 The 2011 An Ri Ra Montana Irish Festival brings a stellar lineup of Irish music and dance, coupled with educational language and history lessons. This year’s music is headlined by the Glengarry Bhoys, a Canadian alternative-Celtic group with a sound that is weighty, authoritative and extremely entertaining. Evans & Doherty have entertained audiences from Waterford, Ireland, to New Waterford, Cape Breton, from Berlin to Boston and from Nova Scotia to New Zealand. They are first-rate musicians, singers, songwriters, promoters and producers who have been an integral part of the East Coast music scene for 20 years.
Singer-songwriter Brendan O’Shea, originally from Killarney in southwest Ireland, moved to the United States in the late 1990s, and since then has released two albums which have garnered praise from around the world. The Kathie Ryan Band is back at An Ri Ra this year, along with Kathleen Kean and Dublin born folklorist, folk singer and instrumentalist Tom O'Carroll. Add to that local area musicians Finnegan Ridge, Dublin Gulch and Strings of Fire to complete the musical lineup. Butte’s Tiernan Irish Dancers will be joined by other groups from Montana and Idaho, and festival-goers can attend Irish workshops and children’s activities, and visit food and retail vendors.

Montana Gaelic Cultural Society presents An Rí Rá
T
he An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival is a production of the Montana Gaelic Cultural Society (MGCS). The MGCS was founded to promote the culture of the Irish and Gaels in Montana and beyond. The MGCS works to host and promote cultural activities across Montana that include Irish language immersion courses, concerts, lectures, music and dance performances, and various other educational activities. The Irish have a strong tradition and link in Montana, and the MGCS works to promote that culture. The An Rí Rá is the grand celebration of the MGCS held annually in Historic Uptown Butte. The An Rí Rá hosts the world’s best Irish performers, lecturers, language instructors, authors, and scholars each year. It is a wonderful celebration of all
things Irish and focused on the true traditions of Ireland. The MGCS is working towards the goal of establishing an Irish Cultural Center in Historic Uptown Butte to serve the Irish of Montana. There are Irish strongholds all over this state including Butte, Helena, Great Falls, Missoula, Bozeman, and Billings, as well as outlying agricultural areas. From the Copper Kings of Butte to former Gov. Thomas Francis Meagher, Montana is home to the Irish in the United States. This celebration of the Irish Culture takes place at the 2011 An Rí Rá Montana Irish Festival in Historic Uptown Butte on Aug. 12-14. For more information, visit the website at www.mtgaelic.org.

Glengarry Bhoys Described as bold, unorthodox, vibrant, and evocative, the Glengarry Bhoys have an energy and good humor, as much a part of the show as their musicianship, that crosses all cultures and ages. Many things have been written and reported about this world renowned Canadian alt-celt group over the last decade, all depicting their musical and entertaining prowess with varied audiences the world over, and also their ability to marshal large enthusiastic crowds show after show. Their objective is simple yet evocative, as stated by their lead singer Graham Wright in a CBC “Fresh Air” interview: “If our audience can only get 10 percent of the satisfaction we get entertaining them — then we surpass objective.”
Brendan O’Shea Irish native O’Shea has become a veteran of New York City’s songwriter scene and has released two albums which have garnered praise from critics and press around the world. Brendan’s songs can also be heard in such films as Ron Howard’s Academy Award nominated film Backdraft and the wildly successful Karen Gehres documentary “Begging Naked.”
Evans & Doherty These two are first-rate musicians, singers, songwriters, promoters and producers. Kevin Evans & Brian Doherty have been an integral part of the East Coast music scene for 20 years. To capture the essence of an Evans & Doherty performance, take a lively blend of traditional, original and contemporary songs, and add a liberal sprinkling of stories and humor. As well as performing on stage, Evans & Doherty are involved with many aspects of the music industry. Brian owns and operates a booking agency and production company, and Kevin owns and operates Modtrad Music, a publishing company.
