Join Us In Butte For The 72nd National Folk Festival July 9-10-11, 2010!Hold the date and make your plans now to come to Butte, Montana July 9-11, 2010 for the 72nd National Folk Festival -- traditional music, food, crafts, culture and fun -- a Great American Festival set in the Great American West -- and admission is free!

boy, bluegrass, klezmer, old-time, Cajun, rhythm and blues, mariachi, western swing, zydeco and more. Continuous performances on seven stages celebrate Native American, Celtic, Acadian, Middle Eastern, Caribbean, East Asian, Appalachian, Hispanic, Eastern European, African and Pacifi c Island cultures.

The National Folk Festival, one of the nation’s largest and most prestigious celebrations of the arts, has taken up residence in Butte, Montana until 2010.

A Celebration of America’s Cultural Roots Folk arts are those deeply held grassroots cultural expressions -- music, dance, crafts, stories and foodways -- passed down through time by families, communities, tribal, ethnic and occupational groups. The festival’s programming embraces the heritage and traditions of all Americans – from those whose families have been here for centuries to those of our country’s most recent immigrants. Legendary masters as well as the next generation of dynamic young artists celebrate the musical soul and cultural roots of America.

First presented in 1934, the National is the oldest multicultural festival in the nation. The National Council for the Traditional Arts (NCTA), the organization that has produced the National Folk Festival since its creation, recognized Butte’s and Montana’s unique natural resources, cultural assets, and strong community spirit. The National Folk Festival is a large-scale three-day outdoor event presented free to the public that celebrates the roots, richness, and variety of American culture. The National features a jubilant and dizzying program that includes music and dance performances, participatory dancing, workshops, children’s activities, regional and ethnic foods, storytelling, parades, craft exhibits and demonstrations, and more. The National brings a jubilant and dizzying feast of the deeply traditional folk arts that appeals to audiences of all ages at all levels. Butte, Montana is the host city for the 70th-72nd National Folk Festivals in 2008-2010. The National Folk Festival kicked off a three-year run in Montana on July 2008. The 2008 event was a huge success, a signature Montana event and an exciting addition to the summer schedule for thousands of visitors to Southwest Montana. In the fi rst year of the festival in Montana, the event was attended by an estimated 75,000 attendees. In 2009, that number rose to nearly 120,000. The economic impact of these visitors to the Southwest Montana economy translates to about $10 to $12 million dollars each summer. Music, Dance, and Tradition From Across America Music and dance traditions from every part of the nation are on display, performed by the country’s fi nest traditional artists. Audiences are treated to authentic blues, gospel, polka, cow

Montana Traditions Each National Folk Festival host city celebrates its own regional traditions and heritage. Folklife demonstrations and exhibits feature Montana’s fi nest craftspeople and other tradition-bearers, and explore subjects ranging from saddle making to blacksmithing to basket making, from cowboy poetry to quilting, instrument making, woodcarving, needlework, American Indian beadwork and more. Something For Everyone Chinese dragon and lion dancers, New Orleans brass bands and a host of other traditional street and celebratory activities are also part of the National’s mix. Special attention is given to providing engaging and educational performances and hands-on activities for children and youth, sharing the richness and diversity of many cultures with them. The festival’s artistic diversity is complemented by a delicious variety of ethnic and regional food specialties available for sale throughout the festival site. Source: www.nationalfolkfestival.com

SPANKY plans daredevil stunt It’s been nearly a year since stuntman Spanky Spangler’s fi ery car crash sent crews scrambling to free him from the wreckage. That Saturday evening during Evel Knievel Days last July has dogged Spangler since, and the daredevil says he’s returning this year, possibly to give the record-breaking jump another shot. “I would like to come back and do the one I missed because I should have made that,” he told The Montana Standard on Wednesday. He was contacted on his cell phone while waiting at the Houston airport to board a plane to Panama. Spangler said he’s considering a few stunts for the ninth-annual event, July 22-24 in Uptown Butte, including another attempt at the 200-foot car jump or leaping from the top of a mine headframe. “I’m going to be there and I’m going to try to keep this thing going with something exciting for everyone,” Spangler said. Last year, the stuntman landed in St. James Healthcare for 24 hours after suffering from the effects of a concussion following the failed jump. He said he had no broken bones and was only briefl y, if ever, knocked unconscious. Spangler told The Standard after being released from the hospital last year that he was already looking forward to Evel Knievel Days 2010. “I’m all right,” he said at the time. “If I come back next year, I’m going to conquer that mountain.”

Planning in Full Swing for EK Days

From Nashville to Houston and Butte and beyond, musicians, motorcyclists and daredevils are revving up for the return of Evel Knievel Days July 22-24. Chad Harrington, executive director of the annual Butte event honoring Mining City native Evel Knievel, said this week that fundraising and planning are in full swing. Many events are booked and revelers should expect another action-packed festival, he said. Stuntman Spanky Spangler, trials champion Geoff Aaron and freestyle motorcyclist Keith Sayers all are returning, Harrington said. Sayers has assembled a team of fi ve freestyle riders who will perform high-fl ying tricks and jumps, Harrington said. “He (Sayers) says it’s going to be a show bigger and better than last year,” Harrington said. “They’ve always got bigger and better tricks.” Added to the event is the BMX freestyle team, which will perform on East Broadway Street, he said. Another highlight will be the Supermoto races. This is the second year the track will be built near the Kelley Mine yard in Uptown

Butte. Harrington said a pedestrian tunnel will be added to the track to give pedestrians more access to view the racing. Live music is planned with two bands on Thursday, three on Friday and three on Saturday night. Headlining acts include the Tom Cats of Missoula on Friday and Butte native Tim Montana on Saturday. Montana, who lives in Nashville, said Wednesday he will play all the songs from his new album, “A Different Kind of Country,” and a few from his fi rst album. The band has added a keyboard player, which “adds a lot to our sound,” he said. The Evel Knievel Days Committee currently have booked Freestyle Motocross with Keith Sayers, 50/50 BMX, Pit Bike freestyle, Supermoto Racing, Wall of death, Geoff Aaron trials, Spanky Spangler, Helicopter tours, Mechanical Bull, Family Fun Day on Thursday, Numerous vendors, Two bands on Thursday, and three on Friday and three on Saturday night. With more stunts to come. For details on the event, visit www.knieveldays.com. By: Justin Post of the Montana Standard

BUTTE ATTRACTIONS

Butte, Montana, also known as “the richest hill on earth,” is rich in history, art and culture and is also home to one of the nation’s largest National Historic Landmark Districts, with over 4,000 historic structures scattered across the Hill. These include some of the country’s fi rst tall buildings, elegant mansions, vintage Victorian homes, boarding houses and hotels, and miner’s cottages that once provided shelter for an estimated 100,000 people. We invite you to take a closer look, experience the beautiful characteristics of our city and see how Butte earned its nickname! Charles W. Clark Chateau 321 W.
