Getting the job done Senior Cole Conway plays multiple roles, often in pain, leads ’Diggers in rebounding BY PAT RYAN of The Montana Standard
C
ole Conway’s picture on the godiggers.com website tells a story in itself. The 6-foot-3 senior on the Montana Tech basketball team wears a sly smile along with a prominent shiner in the photograph, and looks tougher than a two-dollar steak. Turns out, the picture is a pretty good reflection of reality. Conway has seen enough injuries in his four-year run with the Orediggers to keep a full staff of trainers working overtime. He sat out the majority of his junior year after playing one too many games on a stress fracture, and has been
battling various injuries before and since then. Through it all, however, Conway dusts himself off, gets up and gets back in the fray. “He’ll tighten up his shoelaces and get right back out there,” Tech Conway head coach Aaron Woliczko said. “Then he deals with it later with ice and some tape. “Cole Conway is the only one who knows just how tough he is.” When he’s on the floor, Conway pays special attention to defense and rebounding. He leads the Orediggers with nearly six boards per game on average, as Tech is in the top 50 in the nation in rebounding defense. Conway attributes some of his rebounding success to the infamous “bubble,” a device put over the top of
the basket during preseason practices. Instead of the ball falling through the net, the bubble sends it off in odd directions, forcing the players to react quickly to fight for the ball. Though Conway says the bubble was an effective tool, that doesn’t mean he liked it very much. “I hate that thing,” he says with the same half smile in his team mugshot. “It’s just chaos. You never know where the ball’s going.” His name is written on the bubble — multiple times — as a reward for doubledigit rebounding games for the Orediggers. Every time a player gets 10 or more boards, they get to sign the implement. “Earlier this season, when the game was all but over,” Woliczko recalled, “Cole knew he needed another rebound to get 10. He was all over the place and crashing into the barrier behind the hoop. You can see he takes great pride in

his defense and rebounding.” Conway has the quickness to defend on the perimeter and the strength to push the big boys around in the paint, and he’s expected to do both on a regular

Multiple ... Continued from Page D3 basis. “Night in and night out we put Cole on their best perimeter player,” Woliczko said. “Then he spends another 18 minutes a game against the traditional posts who are taller, but maybe not bigger. And he doesn’t say a word. He just gets the job done, and that’s why he’s one of the top defenders in the conference.” Conway said the physical aspect of multiple defensive positions is the least of his concerns. “The hardest thing is knowing all the assignments,” he said. “It’s no big deal changing from the perimeter to inside, but you have to remember your assignments, and they’re always changing.” Conway is, by nature, a silent force on the team. Still, as a senior he’s been expected to take a leadership role. “Cole’s not the most vocal guy, but he’s taken it upon himself to speak up more, especially in the past couple weeks,” Woliczko said. “I always try to lead by example,” Conway said. “But I have to talk to my teammates. I think that it hits a little harder hearing things from another player than it does from the coaches.” That being said, Conway has been pleased with the direction the new coaching staff has taken the team over the last year and a half. “They really make us work,” he said, as a compliment. “They’re constantly checking up on us about our grades and everything. You can see they’re building a connection with us outside of basketball too.” Conway is studying computer networking and expects to graduate next year. The employment outlook is good for his field, though he expresses interest in the electrical trade as well. “Most people in this program at Tech have a job waiting before they graduate,” he said.

Conway, a star player for Butte High who helped lead his team to the state championship game, went his entire high school career without serious injury. He came to Tech, and was drafted into service almost immediately, and began having trouble with “little things” injury-wise. After his sophomore season, Conway underwent surgery for compartment syndrome in his calves. Then, in the early going of his junior season, Conway succumbed to a stress fracture and was out from Thanksgiving through the end of the season. He had played in a couple too many games to qualify for a medical redshirt. Though he’s gone down with a few sprains and bumps this season, Conway said he feels better than he has in years. Still, the nagging troubles he’s had with his health weigh heavy. “It’s mentally tough to stay positive when the injuries keep happening,” he said. “With a lot of it, I just try not to think about it until later when I can get some treatment. Coach has been really good about giving me a day here and there to get healed up.” Though the Orediggers haven’t had a lot of success in the win-loss column the past few years, Conway said the team has made a turn for the better. “We haven’t been blown out at all,” he said. “It seems like we’re close, but just make one or two mistakes that cost us at the end.” The going hasn’t been easy by any means, but Conway’s run with the Orediggers has gone by quickly. “I feel like it’s gone by a lot faster than I expected it would,” Conway said. “No redshirt year sped it up a little, but I didn’t want to redshirt. I wanted to play.” For now, Conway has his eyes set on personal goals — leading his team in both offensive and defensive rebounds — and some wins for his team. “We’ll keep fighting,” he said. “We’re right there in every game. We just have to find a way to pull it out.”

Orediggers aim to right the ship BY PAT RYAN of The Montana Standard
With the arrival of another weekend of Frontier Conference basketball, the Montana Tech Orediggers teams are both looking for a change of fortune. The Tech women have lost four straight and the men have lost five, as a difficult league slate has taken its toll on both teams. The Orediggers host the University of Great Falls Friday and Montana State-Northern on Saturday. The women play at 5:30 p.m. and the men follow at 7:30 both nights. “It’s another big weekend for us,” said Tech men’s coach Aaron Woliczko. “We have two distinctly different challenges. Great Falls is an unbelievably athletic team. They do a great job defensively, and tend to speed up opposing teams. With their length and athleticism they create turnovers which keys their offense. “Northern is just plain tough,” he continued. “Shawn (Huse) has them battling every day. They’re like a meat cleaver, smacking you around and tenderizing. They beat you up for 25 or 30 minutes until you don’t feel much like competing at the
same level you were.” In their last meeting, the Tech men defeated Great Falls 69-61 after a 17-2 run that made the difference. The Argos now sit at 4-4 in Frontier play and 16-7 overall after coming off wins over Lewis-Clark State and MSU-Northern. Great Falls’ 69-68 win over the Lights came as Leon Sutton drained a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left on the clock. The loss to the Argos was only the second Frontier setback of the season for Northern, which sports a 6-2 league mark to go with a 20-4 overall ledger. The Lights are ranked 13th nationally. “Northern starts three guards who are just awesome,” Woliczko said. “They do a tremendous job making the open shots, and (Shaun) Tatarka makes some really tough shots from deep range.” In addition to Sutton, the Argos look to sophomore Marcel Townes, who earned Frontier Player of the Week honors for his 24-point performance in the win over the Lights.

Continued from Page D8 Tomlinson and Brianne McClafferty will be honored. “It will be a very special night all around,” DePell said. “They have both been with me four years, my first two four-year kids who have stuck with me.” Tomlinson has been a starter for nearly her entire time with the Orediggers. “Tabby’s like another coach on the floor,” DePell said. “That’s exactly what a point guard should be, and through the years she has learned exactly what I want in every situation. A lot of times it just comes down to a facial expression from me, and she knows right away what I want.” Tomlinson has also stepped up as one of the team’s leading scorers the last couple weeks. “That’s not the role I asked of her, but she’s playing outside herself, putting everything she has into it,” DePell said, adding that Tomlinson has also led the Frontier in assists for most of the season. McClafferty drew praise from her coach for putting the team first. “It’s been like that for four years,” DePell said. “She’s always wanted what’s best for the team. She’s that type of player.” McClafferty is averaging 7.5 points per game and hits 40 percent of her 3-point efforts. She has played in all 21 of Tech’s games this season, and also pulls down better than three rebounds per game.
Tech head women’s coach Kerie DePell
The Orediggers, currently sitting in sixth place with a 3-6 conference mark, have an opportunity to move into fourth with a pair of wins. “We go into every game believing we can win,” DePell said. “We just haven’t been consistent. We have the talent, we just need 40 full minutes of effort. This weekend we control our destiny and our goal of hosting a playoff game.” Tech is led in scoring by freshman Mandy Machinal, who averages better than 14 points per game, while center Kelsey DeWit paces the Orediggers in rebounds (6.8) and blocks (1.5 per game). In addition to her 4.4 assists per game, Tomlinson gets 1.6 steals per contest as well.
