Hurley powers ’Dogs Anaconda grad plays inside and out BY PAT RYAN of The Montana Standard

I

t took some looking, but Tyler Hurley finally found where he wanted to be. That place, as it turns out, is the Montana Western men’s basketball team, where Hurley is a senior power forward for the Bulldogs. Hurley, a 2007 graduate of Anaconda, spent two seasons — one a redshirt — in Missoula at the University of Montana before making the difficult decision to move to the NAIA. “It was tough to leave Missoula,” Hurley admits. “I wanted to be there, but us making the (NAIA National) tournament the last two years has

helped. I don’t question my decision any more.” Hurley said he was taken aback by the level of play in the Frontier Conference. “The Frontier definitely surprised me,” Hurley said. “There’s not much of a dropoff at all. There are Division I-caliber players in the Frontier who probably just didn’t get a look. There’s no nights off in the Frontier. Tech beat Northern right after us, and we know we can’t look past anyone.” Hurley Though Western head coach Steve Keller recruited Hurley out of high school while he was an assistant coach at Carroll College, Hurley listed the main reasons for choosing Dillon as two friends — Jared Smithson and Layne Glaus. “Knowing a couple of guys before I

came here made it a lot easier,” Hurley said. “They played big in my decision, but I also thought coach Keller would be a great fit.” Keller, who has been at the helm of the Bulldog program for nearly five years, has a reputation as a tough coach. “Coach Keller is definitely the toughest coach I’ve ever played for, but he’ll tell you that himself,” Hurley said. “He demands perfection and we try to give it to him every time we go out on the floor. “You know, I liked coach Keller right away.” For Keller, the proof of Hurley’s value shows up in his numbers and results. “Tyler’s in his third year here, and we’re in our third 20-win season,” he said. “When Tyler Hurley plays well we’re pretty much guaranteed to play well as a team too.” At 6-foot-5, Hurley has the size to play a strong game at the No. 4 spot, but

he’s got the finesse and the shot to be a dangerous force outside as well. “Tyler’s a dual threat,” Keller said. “He’s very solid on the block, but he’s also one of our best percentage 3-point

Hurley ... Continued from Page D3 shooters. He’s developed to where he can play in or out.” Tech coach Aaron Woliczko also complimented Hurley, keying on him defensively instead of Western leading scorer Brandon Brown in the teams’ last game in January. “We want to limit Hurley’s touches against us,” Woliczko said. In two and a half years at Western, Hurley has averaged almost 11 points per game with a high of 27. He has shot 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from beyond the arc, in addition to 77 percent of his free throws. Hurley has also pulled down 5.3 rebounds per game with a high of 13. As a senior, Hurley said it seemed natural to step into a leadership role. “Brandon and I kind of took it upon ourselves last year after the seniors left,” Hurley said. “It was just something we needed to do.” Hurley said he feels very at home with his teammates. “This team is probably the closest one I’ve ever been on,” Hurley said. “We never have problems in practice and that’s really nice. Winning makes it easier, but we’re all doing

stuff together outside of basketball too.” Hurley describes his team as “a hardworking crew,” and he also gave a nod to the underclassmen on the team. “The younger guys challenge us every day in practice,” he said. “We’ve got a good young nucleus. (Jake) Owsley and (Tyler) Miller are sophomores who will be returning starters, so I think the team’s in good shape to keep this run going.” Though he’s made the transition from Missoula to Dillon, Hurley still keeps one strong tie to the Grizzly program. His sister Ali Hurley is a junior with the Lady Griz basketball team. “We talk just about every day,” Tyler Hurley said. And he’s got a good contingent of fans and family who make the trek from the Smelter City to Dillon to see the former Copperhead in action. Just last week, Anaconda head boys’ basketball coach Jason Buell hauled the entire team to Straugh Gymnasium to watch a Western game, featuring an outstanding Anaconda alumnus. Hurley, who is studying secondary education, said he’s come around to like the block system where students concentrate on a single subject at a time. “It’s different, and with three straight

TECH-WESTERN

Third meeting the charm for women The Bulldogs and Orediggers women’s basketball teams have a little score to settle. In the preseason run, Montana Western posted a 63-40 win over a young and developing Montana Tech team. In the first go-round of the Frontier slate, however, Tech posted a big 84-71 win over the Bulldogs. Something’s got to give, and both teams are banking on it being the other. Neither team is in the Frontier Conference group sitting above .500, as Tech is 4-7 and Western is 3-8. Both are coming off losses to teams the other defeated last weekend. After Montana Tech used a strong overtime performance to defeat the University of Great Falls 68-65 on Friday, the last-place Argos (2-8) went to Dillon and posted a 79-74 win over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Similarly, after Western registered a 80-72 victory over MSU-Northern (5-5) Friday, the Skylights came in to Butte and nipped the Orediggers 42-41. The Orediggers saw a nice weekend performance from center Kelsey DeWit, who came up big in the win over Great Falls with 14 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocks, and again Saturday with 10 points in the loss to Northern. “She played as hard as she could, and that’s what we’ve been working on,” Tech coach Kerie DePell said. “That shows what her potential is.” Danni Devenny and Brianne McClafferty put up nice numbers on Friday, while senior point guard Tabby Tomlinson did the same Saturday.

Freshman Mandy Machinal leads the Orediggers in scoring with an average of more than 14 points per game, while DeWit is the rebound leader with nearly seven per game, and also has the most Bignell blocks. Tomlinson paces her team in assists and steals. Western enjoyed a 27-point output from Sammi Bignell in Friday’s win over Northern, while teammate Hayley Pettit contributed 21 points and 11 Pettit rebounds from the post. “I thought our girls did a really good job bouncing back from the last couple weeks,” Western head coach Cara Cocchiarella said. Pettit, a 6-foot-3 post out of Dillon, leads the Bulldogs in scoring (17 points per game), rebounds (12.17 per game), steals (1.6 per game) and blocks, while Alecia Wilson dishes 4.6 assists per game. The Bulldogs are third in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (30.4) and 11th in total rebounds per game (44.4). Tipoff for Friday’s game is slated for 5:30 p.m. at Straugh Gymnasium on the Montana Western campus in Dillon.

For now, Hurley and the rest of the Bulldogs have their sights set on goals that seem closer every day. “The Frontier Conference championship is something we’d definitely like to get back to,” Hurley said. “But our goal from day one has been to advance to the national tournament.
